of some young person who has left the Chateauguay Valley to work either in urban Quebec or out of the province.Such a migration is nothing new to rural areas but many people now believe this migration is occurring among the English-speaking community in greater numbers than ever before. For those of us concerned with the future shape of our communities, the important question is how many of these young people have left or expect to leave. This is one of the major questions to be addressed in a survey conducted by four students from the Chateauguay Valley this summer. The survey, sponsored by the Quebec Farmers’ Association, and financed by Canada Manpower, will be contacting all the ex-students of grade 10 age in 1978 and in 1981, in an attempt to give a better idea as to how many of this large sample of the young members of our community will be remaining to work and live in the Chateauguay Valley in the years to come. The survey will go into greater detail to establish various aspects of the respondants’ attitudes and expectations for the future.Such information is needed if we are to have some idea of what to expect for our communities. The other aspect of this survey of the “youth scene’ will be to compile a catalogue of English-speaking youth organizations for the areas of Huntingdon, Howick, Orm- stown, and Hemmingford. The Field Coordinator for both these projects, Beth Roy, and the Field Workers, Pat Castillo, Debbie Wilson and Audrey Brown, have already started contacting and interviewing youth workers and organizations from these areas. From from the original $15,000 grant from Secretary of State, and we are awaiting final approval of an operating budget of about $35,000 to cover the fiscal year April 1, 1982 to March 31, 1983.By eliminating the need for an executive director's salary, we should be able to manage very well on this money plus our membership fees.” Kennedy and other members of the local executive are keeping in close contact, not only with the Alliance-Québec central office in Montreal, but also with the AQ Off-Island Advisory Council, composed of delegates from other groups outside of Montreal, DIVERSITY The Chateauguay Valley English-Speaking People’s Association is developing what seems to us a healthy sense of its own identity, with the announcement this week that the group plans to stick to a localized approach and to operate as economically as possible, thus reducing its dependence on government funding channelled through the central office of Alliance-Québec, the umbrella group which is the main, but not the only voice, of English-speaking Quebecers. All the Valley people to whom we spoke following the recent Alliance-Québec policy convention in Montreal agreed that the meeting was a most worthwhile one, offering a wealth of information and ideas from well- qualified speakers and resource people. The policies set at that convention are, in the main, reasonable and attractive to the great majority of Anglophone Quebecers and to many Francophones as well. But there is an ever-present danger of the off-island population and the rural point of view being swallowed up by the larger and often more vociferous Montreal @Fron GI ee ec.eaner files @P representation. Some safeguards have been built into the system, in the form of an Off-Island Advisory Council, and a soon-to-be- appointed off-island animator on the AQ staff, but the most important means of safeguarding the special needs of rural and semi- rural people is the existence of autonomous local groups, ready to speak up in their own interests, which do not always coincide with those of Montrealers.Federal government funding of Alliance-Québec is in the area of $500,000, and that is an awful lot of money for one group to administer. Some kind of checks and balances are necessary, and these must be provided within Alliance-Québec not only by a diversity of interests (business, education, culture, etc).but also by strong voices from the different geographic areas of the province.Alliance-Québec should have little to fear and much to gain from strong and honest input from areas such as the Chateauguay Valley, where people hold their own valid views, ‘based on the everyday realities of co-existence with the majority Francophone population on.the one hand, and the need to stand up to Ormstown Two Huntingdon priests will be greatly missed In a small town such as ours, qualities like honesty, compassion and friendship are very important indeed. When people who espouse these qualities are called to leave our community and join another, it is with a great deal of sorrow. As a Protestant minister and hopefully as a member of this community, I feel that some words of gratitude should be expressed towards Fr.Faivre and Fr.Quenneville, My particular concern is of the spirit of ecumenism these men have fostered in this area.Since my arrival here two years ago, I was made to feel that I had two friends occupying the Presbytery at St.Joseph's.During these two years these friends and I and other clergy have engaged in many mutual activities in the work of the Church.Fr.Quenneville is a pioneer in this work and has brought to Huntingdon a real sense of co-operation and respect; perhaps even most important of all, a sense of fellowship.I rejoice in St.Anicet’s good fortune of receiving not one but two good men, dedicated workers and fine priests, yet I feel sadness that they will be missed in this community.I only hope they recognize that not only their parish, but all of
