financial problems.the company Zephyr Textiles of Orm- stown is now operating with a little less than half its work force under the management of a trustee.Only 77 of the regular 180 employees are presently working at the mill since September 4 when lay offs were announced. The CSN union representative, Yves Proulx.says the news took them all by surprise ‘because they were not aware of the company’s situation. The company is on the brink of bankruptcy.However.everything possible is being tried to save the firm by the three major creditors: the Government of Quebec.the Dupont Company and the Mercantile Bank of Canada. The problem encountered by Zephyr is one of liquid assets, both short and medium term. The company's debt would be in the area of one million dollars. As a preventive measure, the Quebec Government asked that a provisional trustee be appointed. That is how a trustee from the firm of Richter & Partners Inc.of Montreal has been supervising the operation of the Zephyr mill, located at 65 St.Paul Street in Huntingdon Hospital to become a 30-bed chronic care centre The Huntingdon County Hospital is presently uñdergoing major changes which can be listed as follows: - a new vocation for the hospital.- removing the office of director general - desire to enter into a service cbfitract with the CLSC.Changing the vocation of the local hospital has been the subject of discussions - often very emotional - for a few years.Various committees were set up in recent months to determine what the future Bourgon, Cluff, Latreille, Provost mark 100th About 100 guests gathered for a 5 to 7 cocktail party at the restaurant ‘‘Le 45’ in Huntingdon on Tuesday.Sept.15 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the insurance firm ‘‘Bourgon.Cluff, Latreille, Provost, Inc.” and their recent association with the net work of the ‘‘Groupe Coopérants”, now one of the most important financial institutions in Quebec with consolidated assets of over a billion dollars. One of the partners in the firm, Norbert Bourgon, acting as MC for the occasion, welcomed all who were attending, including Member of Parliament Jean- -Guy Hudon and MNA Claude Dubois, both of whom also said a few words. The chairman of the board and head of management for the ‘‘Coopérants', vocation of the hospital could be.In the conv of a letter sent to the Huntingdon CLSC, the president of the hospital's beard of directors, Gilles Vallee, explains that one of these committees had been set up at the request of an associate Deputy Minister of the Social Affairs ministry to study the hospital's budget and rationalize it.Mr.Vallée also states in his letter that the Minister of Health and Social Services, Thérèse Lavoie- Roux, has approved his request for changing the vocation of the hospital which will become a centre for chronic care.with about 30 beds. This decision has been long in coming, even though it has been the topic of discussion for quite a while. It must be recalled that as far back as-1972, when the regionalization of hospital care was first discussed, it had been mentioned that the Hun- tingdon Hospital would become a centre for the care of chronic patients.Following this change of vocation, the hospital's board of directors, at its meeting on September 15.decided to remove the office of director general.Gilles Vallée.in his letter to the CLSC, explains that the consensus emerging from consultations with various people has led to the conclusion that an establishment the size of the Huntingdon Hospital does not need a complete full-time management team.Since the one-year work contract of director general Paul-André Gervais had expired.it was not renewed by the board of directors.and it seems that Attending the reception in honor of the 100th anniversary of Bourgon.Cluff.Latreille.Provost were, L to R: Pierre Shooner, Roger Latreille.Paul Dolan.McKie Cluff, Norbert Bourgon and outstanding office buildings in North America today. The number of voters in Huntingdon County could be boosted up to 37,270 The provincial riding of Huntingdon may undergo important changes if the recommendations put forth by the Electoral Representation Commission are adopted. The riding, which is now represented at the National -Assembly by Liberal MNA Claude Dubois would lose .one municipality.but would gain five others which would be taken out of Beauharnois county. The municipality taken out of Huntingdon County ‘would be St-Isidore while those added would be: Beauharnois.Maple ‘Grove, St-Etienne, St-Louis de Gonzague and St- Stanislas de Kostka.Together they represent 9,103 voters.while the Parish of St.Isidore has only 1.574 voters.Total number of voters in the new Huntingdon County would be 37.270.Here's a list of the municipalities which would be included in Huntingdon County if the proposed reform goes through: soon 135th Anniversary Parade Huntingdon Academy will be holding a parade through the downtown district of Huntingdon on Friday, Sept.25.Please take note that King, Bouchette, Chateauguay and Dalhousie Streets will be closed to traffic for a short period sometime between 1 and 2:00 p.m.Mr.Gervais was asked to leave the meeting immediately. In view of the fact that the hospital is now without a director.the hospital board had to find another way of managing the institution. That is why the.board chairman was writing to the Huntingdon CLSC with an official request to enter into a contract with them for management services. The hospital wants to conclude an agreement on this as soon as possible.Three representatives Paul Dolan also addressed the guests as did Pierre Shooner, president and head of operation of the ‘‘Coopérants”’.Special tribute was paid to now retired ‘‘Bud”’ Bourgon, and long-time secretary Ruth Warden who has been with the first for 50 years. The president of BCLP.Roger Latreille.recalled in a humorous vein the 100 years of the company which was founded by Andrew Philps in 1887 when he signed contracts with the Halifax and Hartford Insurance Companies. At the time of Andrew Philps’ death in 1929, his son William K.took over the firm.In 1950.Norbert Bourgon joined the company.McKie Cluff joined the group in 1957.Roger Latreille in 1968.Norbert C Ormstown, for the last week and a half.He is in charge of managing the company in the name of the three major creditors. The mandate of the trustee is for six weeks. He must try fo find a buyer to get the company going again. He must also find a way to sell the one-million dollar inventory accumulated by the firm.A first report from the trustee will probably be given to the creditors at a meeting scheduled for October 8 at 3 p.m.at the Guy-Favreau Complex in Montreal. The union spokesman, have been appointed by the hospital board to negotiate an agreement with the CLSC.They are: Gilles Vallée, Claude Remillard and Donald Davidson. The contract the hospital is looking for would be for 36 months, with a cancellation clause from one party or the other after 60 days’ notice. An initial meeting to discuss all the above is taking place today.Wednesday, at 4 p.m.since the CLSC at a meeting on September 16, decided to act immediately on the hospital's request.year Bourgon in 1970 and Bernard Provost in 1977, firm gradually acquired insurance brokers: W.D.Fraser (1965), W.Wilson (1967), Dupont Fitzpatrick (1979) and White Insurance (1980).Finally, three more brokers got affiliated to B.C.L.P.Jon Proudfoot, in November 1982, Les Assurances Claude Bourcier.in February 1986 and Les Assurances Maurice Billete in February 1987.The Proulx, concludes that what is happening is probably due to bad management. He understands that it was necessary to appoint a trustee to manage the company since the three major creditors have a lot to lose if the enterprise goes bankrupt. The trustee and the workers’ union have had talks since the beginning of this touchy situation.Proulx says that the trustee met the union in order to make sure that the work contract was being respected with regards to lay offs and call back to work according to seniority. Also the union has asked the trustee for copies of the company's financial statement sv as to study it more closely."We want to look at it and see if solutions can be found to get the mill going again,” says Proulx.Other meetings between the union and the trustee are planned, to talk about the future of the company.Among other things, the CSN economists will study the situation at Zephyr Textiles very closely. In the event no buyer can be found, the CSN is even considering the possibility of changing the firm into a co-operative.Larry Murphy, the "Huntingdon connection”in TeamCanada’s win When Team Canada, in its final game against the Russian team during the Canada Cup series was trailing behind 4-2 and defenceman Larry Murphy sent his first goal of the tournament sizzling past Mylnikov, there was a little bit of a Huntingdon connection in that goal. The Huntingdon connection is that Larry is the son of Edward Murphy and Doris Campbell.both formerly of Huntingdon but now living in Scarborough, Ont.Larry was bom on March 8, 1961 at Whitby, Ont.At an early age, Larry displayed a keen interest in hockey. He took an active part in all the hockey games played during his academic years.Eventually he was chosen.for more intensive training which took place during his senior high school years spent at Peterborough, Ont.There he played hockey on the St.Pete's team.At the age of 19, he was accepted into the National Hockey League. He first played for the Los Angeles Kings and three years later joined the Washington Capitals Larry's relatives and friends in Huntingdon, including uncles Gerald and Lawrence as well as many cousins, were cheering for him all through the Canada Cup series, and they were proud to see him play an important part in the final Team Canada 6-5 victory over the Soviets on September 15.The Montreal Gazette says that Larry was chosen to play on Team Canada because of ‘his big, booming and dangerous shot from the point.” Larry Murphy, star defenceman of the Washington group ‘Les Entreprises Rede Inc.’" are planning to open their new pub on Chateauguay Street sometime at the beginning of October. The group went to court well prepared with a list of about a thousand names of people who backed the pub project, saying that Huntingdon needed that kind of place which would be different from anything already existing in the town. The ‘Entreprises Rede" also presented in court the written permission of the Shell Service Station, the Texaco Service Station and the SLL (Chateau) group.agreeing to let customers of the pub use their parking facilities. In all, the pub will have access to some 79.101 square feet of parking space.Photos of the pub - even aerial photos - were also presented in court to show the unique character of the facilities, with superb view of the Chateauguay River, the old stone grist mill and the dam.The owners of the pub say they were overwhelmed with the local support they received from private citizens and businessmen as well. They say an incredible amount of effort was put out by a few people, especially Joanne Allen, Mary Renaud, Bob Campbell and many others, in circulating the petition in favor of the pub obtaining a liquor permit. One of the pub owners, Richard Renaud, stated that: “All things considered, the situation only strengthened our belief that here in Huntingdon, when people stand together for something, barriers can be broken.” The pub intends holding a contest to find a name for the new place (see ad elsewhere in this week's Gleaner). The winner's name will be revealed at the official opening of the pub with his/her picture being taken with the owners, and later framed and hung up in a prominent place in the establishment, as a permanent memento of the occasion. 2 — THPGLEANER Tsaboukos On Saturday, Sept.19, the CVR Spartans faced the Cowanville Dynamos at home as they marched on to their second consecutive victory of the season by a final score of 23-14.The home team had their hands full with their aggressive opponents in what seemed to be an in- jury-riddled game. Before the first quarter ended, the scoreboard read 4-0 for CVR when quarterback David Greer threw a 15- Chateauguay Valley. The club clinched the Division I championship this past weekend, Sept.19 while playing away from home. They defeated second place Ste.Anne de Bellevue by coming from, behind twice to win 13-9.This leaves Ormstown with an eight win, one loss récord, while the nearest competitor has six wins, two losses and one tie.It was a do or die game.Had Ormstown lost the game then Ste.Anne's would have to lose their one remaining game in order for the good guys to have a shot at winning.Thankfully, this didn’t happen.Ste.Anne’s is known for their huge, powerful forwards who control the pace of a game.To win, Orm- stown’s forwards had to neutralize this attack. On the other hand, Orm- stown’s speed in the backs was the danger that Ste.Anne*’s had to contend with. The first half was close as expected as Ste.Anne's forwards kept the action mostly in Ormstown’s end, yet Ormstown was repeatedly able to dodge trouble with a timely kick or a long run.The halt ime score was 6 to 3 in St.Anne's favor. The local club's 3 points came on a penalty kick by Captain Bernie ‘ ‘public enemy no.1 inSte.Anne's” Bonenberg. The second half was entirely different.Orm- stown’s small forwards began to dominate their larger opponents and consequently the ball seemed to become a permanent fixture in the Ste.Anne's half of the field. The forwards’ strong play meant that Ormstown’s backs would get their hands on the ball more often. It paid off quickly when Gerry “the bleached” Brunette sprinted into the end zone for a try to give Ormstown a 7 to 6 lead. The play was set up by Mike L'Heureux and Serge “Jambon’’ Tremblay.Ste.Anne's came back though, with a penalty kick to take the lead 9 to 7.Then the pressure by Ormstown forced Ste.Anne's to a series of silly penalties which gave Ormstown either excellent field position or else a scoring opportunity.Bernie Bonenberg took full advantage of the penalties by successfully converting two of the penalty kicks to round out the scoring.Members of the winning side, led by Captain Bernie Bonenberg were: Fowards Gary Tennant, Brian Landry, Dave Brunette, Robert Clement, Randy Cote, Kerry Allman and Denis Brunette and backs Scott Tennant, J.P.Lussier, Mike L'Heureux, Serge Tremblay, Gerry Brunette, Dave L'Heureux and Martin Tennant.Prior team game was much more exciting. The final was 10 to 3 on tries by Robert L'Heureux and Spike (he has no other name- just like Madonna) followed by a two-point conversion from Brendan “lance that’ Boyle.During Labour Day weekend Ormstown competed in the Montreal Irish International Tournament where they went all the way to the finals. On te way to the finals Ormstown defeated the Washington Irish, and Montreal Wanderers by identical 18 to 0 scores and Ste.Anne's by 7 to 6.Unfortunately.the Saracens couldn't get by the strong Boston Rugby Club to win it all.Playing well all at a reasonable cost.William Jewell.an agricultural engineer at Cornell University.says he's done it.Dr.Jewell's plant-based sewage treatment process relies on a modified hydroponic system called the ‘nutrient film technique’ (NFT).In this process.developed in Great Britain in the early 1970s, plants are grown in water-tight troughs with waste water flowing through the roots.**Within two hours, the NFT can turn grossly polluted sewage into secondary quality water, the standard for most waste-water treatment facilities in the United States,” says Jewell. It's extremely efficient at removing some of the most troublesome pollutants.such as heavy metals, according to Jewell.although where they go in the plants is still unknown. The NFT works most efficiently when solid materials and grease already have been removed from the waste water Separating these out.thereby producing sludge.is a standard first step in all sewage treat ment systems. All sludge disposal is a costly problem.Jewell is tackling this as well.He has designed a device called an ‘anaerobic attached film expanded bed reactor ’ In this process, methane-producing bacteria feed on the solids in the waste water, removing them without producing sludge.Using data from a producing model.Jewell estimates that a combined NFT and expanded bed system could take 1 million gallons of sewage a day (that generated by 10.000 people).and produce better than secondary quality water and $350.000 worth of natural gas yearly.Once optimized, such a system potentially could pay for itself by harvesting the sewage-purifying plants.and feeding those into the reactor along with the sewage solids. This combination significantly increases natural gas production while solving the problem of what to do with the plants growing in the NFT.Likewise.the other community-derived wastes can be used as ‘food’ for methane production. But turning a profit future depends on the type of plants grown in the NFT.Jewell's system can grow virtually any terrestrial plant.but some remove certain nutrients more efficiently than others.Cattails.plume and elephant grasses work best with grossly polluted sewage.but later treatment stages are excellent for producing cash crops such as roses, chrysanthemums, carnations, and other omamentals.even trees. These could either be sold to local markets or used as nursery stock for public parks and other community recreation areas. If Jewell's combined plant-based system 1s as fast.efficient and economical as he says, why isn't it used commercially” “Like any new technology.there is a certain amount of inertia against il says Ronald Isaacson.manager of renewable resources for the Gas Research Institute.a sponsor of Jewell's research.Another reason is that the public tends to think of living systems as inherently fragile and unreliable. But this is not so, according to experts in the field, including Tom DeBusk, manager of the water hyacinth project in the Walt Disney World Resort Complex in Lake Beuna Vista, Fla.This experimental floating plant facility.in operation since the late "70s, uses aquatic plants growing on open ponds to accomplish the same tasks as Jewell's NFT DeBusk contents there's little difference between the track records of the NFT.floatingplant and didn’t charge his client for the afternoon and even gave him another afternoon's fishing on the house.(Watch future edition of The Gleaner for upcoming story on the possibility of pacific salmon fishery bing established m the Chateauguay River and Lake St.Louis, and the opposition to this plan by Atlantic salmon fishing purists.
