Then apparently switching to more serious matters, the guest speaker confided that the real reason he was addressing his audience that night was that his wife, Maureen McTeer, had just published a book and he wished to advise everyone it was on sale in libraries.Mr.Clark explained that it was a good book, easy to understand, by children and even reporters.He added that it was available in French and English but that the French version cost a little bit more - that’s the price one has to pay for the “distinct society”, he added with whimsy.Praises Hudon Getting serious for real this time, the Secretary of State for External Affairs paid a vibrant tribute to his parliamentary secretary.Jean-Guy Hudon.Mr.Clark said a parliamentary secretary works as much as the minister, but the minister gets all the honors.*'I think that's just fine,” he added in a tongue-im-chéek comment.Mr.Clark concluded his comments on Hudon by stating that the MP has sound judgment, thathe’sa person that one can always count on, and that every time he has represented Canada abroad, ‘he has done it in an exceptional manner.Morever, Clark said that Hudon helps him maintain contact with the province of Quebec, something very important to me” Four great moments Mr.Clark devoted the remainder of his speech to list and expand on four very important dates in the life of the country since the Progressive Conservative Party took powerin 1984.The first moment he listed was exactly that date - September 1984 - which saw the end of 20 years of Liberal Party domination in Ottawa.Mr.Clark said the election of his party was a mandate for change given by the population.The next .moment, according to Mr.Clark, was November 1984 when Finance Minister Michael Wilson brought out his ‘‘Economic Statement’ setting the course for the next few years: to get deficits down, to reassess FIRA, to end the national energy policy, to build on 40th anniversary - Br.62, Ladies Auxiliary by Elsie Melanson On Friday evening, Sept.28, the Ladies Auxiliary of Branch 62, R.C.L.Valleyfield, celebrated their 40th anniversary with a delicious barbecue chicken supper, catered by Buffet Simon.Cocktails were served prior to the meal, which was attended by 150 members.Special invited guests at the affair were: District Commander, Roger Filion, accompanied by his wife, Madeleine: vice-president of District Command.John Rennie, accompanied by his wife, Rita: Secretary of District Command, Hazel Leamon, accompanied by her husband.Ed: and _ Honorary President of Branch 62: Sam Butt, accompanied by his wife Anne.Short addresses were given by Roger Filion and Sam Butt.Anne Butt was presented with a beautiful bouquet of flowers, and her Life Membership card, in honor of being one of the oldest members of the Auxiliary.Also during the course of the evening some special ‘ presentations were made: Helen Boisvert was presented with the ‘‘Badge of Merit” (highest award from Dominion Command) for her untiring devotion and service to the Branch covering a span of 20 years.Presentation was made by Mrs.Anne Butt being presented with bouquet by Auxiliary President, Reina Sarrazin.Mrs.Butt is one of the oldest members of the Auxiliary.At the 40th anniversary celebration of the Ladies Auxiliary, Helen Boisvert was presented with a Medal of Merit.In photo are L to R: Reina Sarrazin, Roger Filion, Helen Boisvert, René Cardinal.the Branch President, Badges were also René Cardinal, assisted by presented to Laurette Roger Filion and Reina Larocque, Lucienne Doyon Sarrazin (president of the and Therese Drouin.Ladies Auxiliary).Past Officers badges were Three Life Membership than presented to: Briefs.WOULD YOU BELIEVE - that out of the 119 spots available on the 17 municipal councils in the territory covered by this newspaper, there are only nine women holding office?This is a little bit better than a few years ago, but there's still lots of room for improvement.Come on, ladies, stand up and be counted! Your opportunity to run for office is this coming Sunday (or Monday), Oct.18- 19 from 12 noon to 2 p.m.Jacqueline Seguin (2nd Vice-president) and Marie Perrier (secretary).An evening of dancing followed the supper and presentations.HAND IN HAND 87 you can can lend a hand Among the 600 guests attending the fund-raising dinner held by the Progressive Conservative Party Association for Beauhamois-Salaberry riding on October 15 was the above group of Clevn & Tinker's management people who were joined by Huntingdon mayor Brisebois, MP the vast potential of this country.The results, said Clark, are that we now have in Canada the most successful and strongest economy in the Western World today.The Conservative Party has done a remarkable job for employment - opening up 900,000 jobs in three years.Lake Meech Another important moment listed by Mr.Clark was April 1987 when the Lake Meech agreement was reached, allowing the province of Quebec to become a full partner in Canada once more.“This was a matter of justice and equality,” Mr.Clark said.A third important moment for Mr.Clark was the first Summit for French- speaking countries in Paris in February 1986, which was followed by the Quebec Summit this year.Such a summit was never possible before the Conservatives took power, explained Mr.Clark, because of the constant bickering between Paris, Ottawa and Quebec City.Free trade A fourth great moment - and there was elation and triumph in Mr.Clark’s voice as he spoke - was, of Hudon and Huntingdon course, the.recent agreement on free trade between the U.S.and Canada.This agreement, Mr.Clark stated, will allow the complete respect of the Canadian nation.It calls for the gradual elimination of tariffs between the two countries, establishes a board to settle disputes, allows the liberalization of trade.According to a study of the Canadian Economic Council, the free trade agreement could mean the opening up of some 350,000 jobs in Canada.Our constant objective, Mr.Clark reminded his audience, has been the creation of jobs.And he repeated that his government had indeed been responsible for almost a million new jobs in only three years.All this didn't happen by accident, Mr.Clark concluded.A government could achieve all the accomplishments mentioned, only if it showed boldness and courage.The speaker also gave credit to Prime Minister Mulroney's great qualities of leadership.as being an important factor in his government's success.Ending on a local note, Mr.Clark told his audience that if, for example, they economy in the West Photo: Ramens Rovgerts businessman Leon Robidoux.Seated L to R are: Jean- Pierre Philie, Réal Desgroseilliers, Guy Leblanc, Jack Cockshott, Jacques Rougerie.Standing: Gérald Brisebois, Robert Perrier, Jean-Guy Hudon, Roger Lessard, Leon Robidoux, and Raphaél Rodrigue.‘Photo Ramons Rougerie The Honorable Joe Clark, Secretary of State for External Affairs.want a new bridge or an ‘works, so that there are autoroute, the only way is ‘taxes available to pay for to have an economy that such things.New radar equipment helps police catch speeders any which way they go Commenting on the fact that there's been a decrease in accidents in the area covered by the Huntingdon detachment of the Provincial Police in 1987, corporal Laurier Gauthier says that this may be due to the new radar equipment used by the police.This new equipment allows the policemen to catch speeding motorists any which way they go, whether the police car is going in the opposite direction or following them.With their old radar equipment, police could only monitor motorists travelling on the same side of the road as they were, This therefore makes it - possible to stop motorists who are always on the lookout for patrol cars and who used to get away with speeding.Going over the statistics for 1987, up to September 30, Corp.Gauthier states that there were two traffic deaths, the same number as in 1986 for the same period.As for accidemdd resulting in injury, there were 54, in which 77 people were injured.Last year there were 49 accidents with 51 injured for the same period.Accidents causing only material damages numbered 175 this year, as compraed to 124 in 1986.Corp.Gauthier explains the higher number of accidents by the fact that this is the first year that the QPP has the responsibility for the Town of Hun- tingdon.From January lo September 30, 1987, the local QPP arrested 103 motorists for driving while intoxicated - some 126 had been arrested for the same reason during the same "time in 1986.Briefs.This decrease in DWI arrests lead Corp.Gauthier to say that motorists are much more careful now.Many ask someone else to drive them home when they've had a bit too much to drink, Corp.Gauthier says there's also been good co-operation on the part of bar owners in this respect.NOMINATION DAY - Day coming up on Sunday or Monday, depending on the municipality.For the 17 municipalities covered by this newspaper, 15 mayors and about 50 councillors have come to the end of their terms and, theoretically, their chairs or seats are open to anyone wishing to make a bid for them.For the moment, it’s hard to find out who will be running for reelection or who will step down.Many are playing it cool until Nomination Day when they hope to find out what kind ot, 1t any, opposition comes up.Some mayors have said they'd like to call it a day and hand over the municipal reins to someone else.But if it turns out on Sunday or Monday that they could be replaced by someone they judge to be unfit for the job, they will more or less sacrifice themselves, and stay on for another term, just to prevent the municipality from falling into what they believe would be the wrong hands.Other mayors have decided to ask for another term because the young protégé they have been nurturing as their successor is considered by them as not being ready to take over yet.This positively smacks of ‘‘Godfather" overtones.It seems that this whole way of thinking gives very little credit to the intelligence of voters.The idea behind this philosophy seems to be that voters are too dumb to decide for themselves who should be elected to run municipal affairs.And, in a way, the people who are trying to control municipal councils are right, because ordinary citizens show very little interest in either running for office or voting in municipal elections.To coin a phrase, democracy at the municipal level could be described as “democracy by absenteeism’.R.R.100 years ago (From the Canadian Gleaner of Thursday, Oct.13, 1887) NEW WELL The well, mention of which was made in the Hemmingford notes several weeks since as bein sunk by the village corporation, has been completed.Though the cost of it was about $175, the general feeling of the taxpayers of the place is that the expenditure is a judicious one.The depth of the well is 21 feet.Its diameter, within the stones lining it, is 10 feet.As the depth of water in it is now more than 10 feet, it is not probable that the supply which it affords will be exhausted by use at any fire at all likely to occur in our little hamlet.LAST SURVIVOR We have to notice the departure of, so as we are aware, the last among us who saw any part of the military movements in the so-called battle of Chateauguay.It is possible that there may.be French Canadian survivors, but we have good cause to believe that Robert Morrison was the last English-speaking person who was on the banks of the Chateauguay on the 26th October, 1813.CADASTRAL PLAN Mr.Edwards of Franklin is to receive instruction shortly to make an examination into and a report upon changes which have taken place in property holdings in Hem- mingford township and village, since several years ago he made the survey for the cadastre of the county.The people of this county have good ground of complaint in that this most valuable system has been withheld from them so long after its introduction into most of the counties of the province.30 years ago (From the Huntingdon Gleaner of Wednesday, Oct.13, 1937) HELP FOR THE WEST Contributions of fruit and vegetables which are being gathered in Huntingdon today for shipment to needy families in the drought-ridden sections of Western Canada are coming in rapidly and local organizers are hoping that one car will be filled with donations from here and St.Agnes de Dundee.At the latter place Tuesday, well over 100 bags were put into the car and at noon today contributions in Huntingdon were steadily pouring in.AWARD FOR TEACHER The provincial Association of Protestant Teachers of Quebec held Montreal Thursday, Friday and Saturday of last week.Mrs.Margaret Lindsay of Orm- stown was a first degree candidate for an award of the order of scholastic merit.An interesting feature of Friday's discussion concerned itself with teachers’ salaries.Pointing out the responsibility which devolved upon the teacher, Mr.Stephen, past president of the Association, said that the Government valued the teachers’ services at $300 ‘for this is the rural teachers’ minimum and I fear that many will be reduced to that figure if our school boards have their way.British Columbia has a minimum of $780; WAIT TiLL I CLOSE THE WINDOW Www.TRANG /4 10.81 Letters Concerned about community spirit I grew up in this area and have always been proud of it.I recently moved back here after having lived in the city for a few years.Many times I met people who teased me ahout being a country girl, but I was always quick to point out all the assets of small community life.“Where I come from,” I would say, people stick together.Living there is like being a member of a giant family.We take care of each other.You never feel alone because whenever you need help, it is close by and quick to come.” Well, I must admit that I was terribly disappointed in the turnout at the Fire Benefit held at BBJ’s club on Sunday night.A member of our community met with complete disaster on Friday, Sept.25 when her home and everything in it was destroyed by fire.This woman, and the three small children she is raising on her own, have lost everything - their home, their clothes, their furniture, their food - everything! Now, had this happened somewhere else, this womah might have been left to deal with all of this on her own.But since it happened in our area, we would expect that everyone would pull together to help, right?A benefit was organized to help her get her feet back on the ground.Members of the community were asked to come and give whatever they could - be it clothes, furniture, toys, food, money, or even just a sympathetic handshake and a word of encouragement, The Midnight Flyers, a local band, donated their time and effort to supply the music.BBJ's supplied the place, the advertisement, and the organization of the event, as well as starting thepot witha substantial contribution.Myself, as a waitress, volunteered my time to do my share, When Sunday came I was really optimistic, for I believed with all my heart that the awesome community spirit I had so often witnessed in the past would show - itself once again.I expected the residents of this area that I call home, to flock to the aid of their neighbor in need.Instead I was severely disappointed.Seven people turned out.Four of these people were non-residents of the area who happened by.That leaves three - not three hundred, but THREE people who cared enough to come out and support a fellow citizen in her hour of trouble.So I ask you, where is all this community spirit I have been applauding and.priding myself in all my life?I want every member of this community to know that you have let me down.The incredible level of pride I once felt for the people of this area has been crushed.It has been replaced with shame.For isn't that what we feel when we tum away a friend in need?Or is it indifference?How can it be that my beloved home town has changed so drastically that it no longer feels like home?Concerned about community spirit, Jill Elder The CVESPA Column their 73rd annual convention in Alberta of $840; Ontario of $500.Kaleidoscope Day Care Centre “When can I go to day care mommy?” “Why can't we go to day care today?" These questions I hear all the time from my 3 1/2 year old.My 18-month old squeals with delight every time I pull into the day care parking lot.As a parent, it shows me how important the day care environment can be to children.Besides being a parent, ! am also an educator and I have worked at Kaleidoscope Day Care since it opened in 1980.I ‘have always been concerned about how my children would adapt to the day care environment and 80 far 1 have been very pleased with the results.he day care setting The interior of the day care centre vas completely renovated tae years ago, and what a difference from our first day! It's now roomier, more practical and best of all it's all according to government regulations.We've seen a lot of children come through our doors.It’s fun to meet them on the street and have them recognize us.The children have made lots of friends and it's fun for me as a parent to hear Emily talk about her friends at day care and about the educators who take care of her.Melissa is learning so much in the baby’s group with Linda as her care giver.The staff is a great group of people who really care.Not only am 1 a happy parent of Kaleidoscope but T enjoy my task as educator.We have a good program.The children are continually learning new songs, etc.À favorite activity for the youngsters is painting with their feet.The program covers a variety of activities including motor develop ment, personal hygiene, music.science,’ woodworking, arts and crafts, water play, etc.I enjoy feedback from the parents about how their child may talk about one child or another, or try to sing a song which they have learned.1 don’t know how many times parents have asked for a book with songs and activities including a good recipe for play dough, so that they could join in with their children.Parents, don't -+despair, such a book is being planned for the near future.One of the highlights of day care are the birthday celebrations and field trips.The Chateauguay Valley English Speaking Peoples’ Association Education Conference Everyone who is interested in the future of our education system in South ~ West Quebec is invited to participate at a Conference on October 17 at 1:00 p.m.The Conference is being held in Chateauguay at the Vanier Cultural Centre, 15 Maple (just north of Blvd.d'Anjou and west of the Shopping Centre).To ensureadequate space, you may pre-register by calling 264-5386.There is no registration fee.For full details of the Conference refer to the separate article elsewhere in this issue of The Gleaner.“This Week in Chateauguay Valley” “This Week” is now settled into its new time slot: Sundays at 7:50 p.m.the A mix-up at Channel 57 resulted in the program of October 4, with guest Ken Aldridge, being shown on the afternoon of October 3.This program will be aired again on November 8 at the regular time of 7:50 p.m.Apologies from the station to everyone who was looking for Ken on October 4.This Sunday, Oct.17, Maurice King's guest will be Ken Reid of Huntingdon, who will be talking about his hiking trip with Chris Thiel in the Adirondacks and about his beginning career as à writer.Dialogue Anyone who has not yet received a copy of the Dialogue newspaper, can obtain a copy by calling the CVESPA Office at 264-5386.Letters, stories, articles, photos, etc: for the next issue are invited.The final deadline is November 15, but you don’t have to wait until then: ‘‘the sooner the better!” Community Directories CVESPA has completed the compiling and up dating of its Community Directories, covering of South West Quebec.The following directories are available on request, for the price of $1.each, which covers the cost of printing: - Chateauguay - Hemmingford, Lacolle, St-Jean - Haut-St-Laurent & Beauharnois-Salaberry The Directories include information about community groups, churches, schools, government and health services.For individuals who wish to purchase a directory by mail, please send a total of $1.75 per directory to cover printing and postage to CVESPA, at P.O.Box 1597, Huntingdon, Que.J0S 1H0.Or visit the CVESPA Office at 27 Prince, Huntingdon;
