from France.Mr.Lévesque was “praised as a great democrat, a charismatic leader and one of Quebec's greatest patriots,” writes the Montreal Gazette in Tuesday's edition.On page A4 of the same edition of the Gazette, reporter Susan Semenak heads her article: “Lévesque recalled: a warm man, deeply committed to democracy.” Further on, the reporter writes: “Even his fiercest Orm- stown will be held, during which a final decision will be taken concerning the fate of this company.The company has been encountering serious difficulties for quite some time.Only six weeks ago, a bankruptcy proposal was submitted, and the company severely reduced its operation.The number of employees then went from 180 to only 77.The trustee appointed by the major creditors had been given a specific task - that of trying to find a buyer or investors who could have put the company back on the right track.This six-week mandate ended on October 30.Even though many contacts were made to try and get a buyer.no one seemed interested.That is why the creditors meeting on November 10 will be of major consequence because that's when the decision to close down the mill for good will be taken, leading to the liquidation of assets and the sale of equipment.Even though the closing down of the mill will only take place officially on November 10.the operation of themill has already been gradually reduced, leaving only about 10 employees presently taking down the equipment.This turn of events means a major loss of employment opportunities for the Ormstown area.With Zephyr closing down.this Possible agreement Its possible that an agreement could be reached between the province of Quebec and the State of New York which would it make possible to exchange information between the two on traffic violations.In this way.if for example a motorist from the Huntingdon area was found guilty of a traffic violation in Malone.N.Y.demerit points could be added to his driving license.The same thing could be true of the Malone motorist found guilty in the Huntingdon area.It seems the two goverm- ments have been discussing this possibility for some time.And the agreement would be on the point of being signed and would be announced amid an important information campaign on the subject.Needless to say this agreement would par ticularly be felt in the Huntingdon area because of its proximi&y to the US.- Quebec border.Too often.motorists seem to forget traffic laws when they cross the border, their attitude being that it doesn’t matter because they're not home.Talks between Quebec and New York State started when it was decided to take steps to cut down infractions by foreign motorists.Apparently New York was encountering problems with some motorists, specially truck drivers.At the same time, Quebec authorities were thinking along the same line.For the American motorists, this agreement if it comes to pass, will force them to become more familiar with the Quebec Highway Code.For example.in Quebec, it's not allowed to turn right on a red light while in New York State.this is allowed.By the same token, Quebec motorists will also have to become more familiar with traffic laws in New York State.means the loss of 180 jobs in the district.Union representative Yves Proulx says that a request has been made to the Quebec Labor Ministry for the setting up of a Committee for the reclassification of employees who were laid off Also the provincial MNAs from the district have been contacted to exert pressure so that the fate of the Zephyr employees be considered as a priority The reclassification committee will help to determine the needs of the employees for more schooling or professional training, so that they may find work in a related or possibly totally new field.Proulx said that the union is presently holding a survey among the em ployees to find out what their schooling background and their financial situation are apd what their needs for professional training would be.A group of about 100 friends gathered at the Huntingdon 1.egion Hall on Sun., Nov.| to wish a happy s0th birthday to Mrs.Grace Cappiello.Mayor Gérald Brisebois welcomed Mrs.Cappiello.Member of the legislative Assembly.Alister Somerville (left) attended the event, as well as Gerald Moore, president of the Legion, and Member of Parliament Jean-Guy I would like to add a personal note.Having lived in Nitro for years, many of them associated with the children in one way and another, and especially when I had the store, it was a treat for me to have so many young and old friends - some of whom I had not seen in a long time - come by to greet me.Features were familiar, but I couldn't remember names! This evening was arranged for my old friend, Father Tessier; but I also celebrate my 75th two days before his - and certainly enjoyed being at his party! ILLNESS?Statistics show that people in Canada, as most everywhere else in the industrialized world for that matter, are living longer, but the question that may be asked is: Are they living better ?In Canada, the number of people over 65 has reached 2.5 million.At the same time, the number of young people has declined, due to Canada’s low birth rate.In 1900, the birth rate was 30 per 1.000 population.In 1981, only 16 babies per 1,000 population were born.On the other hand, life expectancy has greatly improved: 50 years ago, a new-born male could expect to reach the age of 59.6, girls, the age of 61.8.In 1981, the average male life expectancy at birth was up to 71.5 while for females it was 78.7.Some observers have reached the conclusion that, because the population as a whole is getting older, the country is going to go broke paying higher national health care costs.Why equate aging with illness?Are the two inseparable?Or can’t one argue that illness results for the most part from neglect.If one doesn’t exercise, doesn’t eat properly, doesn’t get enough sleep, then it follows that that person will probably end up in a hospital ward.Neglect yourself for 50 years, and the symptons are bound to show up when you're older.So, instead of worrying about health care costs for the elderly, what the country should be doing is putting a lot more emphasis on showing the young and middle-aged how to look after themselves.Another practise that should be discouraged is putting the elderly literally ‘to pasture” at 65, with a watch and a handshake.How healthy can one feel when society tells you it has no more use for you?Getting older doesn't necessarily have to mean being sick and unhappy.Granted that time takes its toll, but it doesn’t mean that one cannot maintain good eating habits, exercise, keep busy, read, help others, and thus remain in reasonably good condition for many, many years yet.R.R.100 years ago (From the Canadian Gleaner of Thursday, Nov.3, 1887) FOXES ARE NUISANCE Foxes are unusually plentiful in this neighborhood (Hemmingford) and from long impunity have grown so bold as in some instances to carry off poultry from the immediate neighborhood of occupied dwellings.Several of our village sportsmen have been trying their hand at foxhunting of late and with some mesure of success.The owners of poultry hereabouts will not be sorry to see the number of these mischievous and destructive animals greatly lessened.Your correspondent has heard of numerous instances of flocks of turkeys, numbering 25 to 30, having been completely destroyed by Master Reynard.BARLEY IS BOOMING Barley is booming.Owing to brewers having discovered that western barley is unsuited for their purpose, being dark in color, they have turned to Canada, and are buying all they can get.Prices here have jumbed up to 63c, which was paid to-day.The buyers are Baird, Kee and Walsh.The unexpected demand made quite a stir both here and at Howick.MORE SETTLERS The returns made up by the officers of the Department of Agriculture show that the total number of settlers arriving in the Dominion for the nine months, to the end of September, so far as reported was 62,186, against 51,272 for the previous year.50 years ago (From the Huntingdon Gleaner of Wednesday, Nov.3, 1937) MILK STRIKE The milk strike that has been on the go for many weeks across the border is not lessening.The strike is spreading, and now [8 counties in New York State are affected.The farmers are demanding $2.50 for 3% b.f.milk per hundred pounds.The shortage of milk is now being felt in many communities.The strikers claim they do not want to cause a milk shortage in the metropolitan areas because that would prove injurious to health.Ormstown by Jean McEwen 829-2704 Our community extends sympathy to the families and relatives of the late Mrs Marguerite Jones, the late Mr.Gordon Hope and read by Jean McClintock.Reports from a young man who was out riding his bicycle in St.Anicet.He came across a dead dog in the Laguerre river that had a garbage bag tied securely around its head.It was bloated from being in the water, but was a large dog that resembled the Newfoundland breed.As one can imagine, this is a distressful sight for anyone to happen upon.The grim reality of the panic and struggle this animal must have suffered brings anger and anguish to those of us who love and respect God's creatures.Unfortunately, nothing can be done for this animal now, but I would like to bring to the attention of the person or persons who did this horrible thing, or anyone else who abuses or misuses animals, what they themselves are losing.First of all, they are losing the genuine love and loyalty a properly treated and cared for pet can give.They are losing the joy and comfort that comes from owning and caring for a pet.They are losing the reassurance of always having a faithful friend to count on in times of loneliness, sadness, or danger.They are losing the humor that the antics of a pet can provide.They are losing the opportunity of dividual personality of the animal.Many people do not see this in animals, but I can assure you as a long time pet owner that it exists.Perhaps it was not the owner of the dog who did this terrible thing, but whoever you are I hope you have many sleepless nights until you finally: realize that there are other alternatives to getting rid of unwanted pets.One solution that is more humane is to take it to Shangri-la where the people accept these animals when room is available and try to find good homes for them.Another solution is to try to find a good home yourself for it or, if neither of the above is possible, take it to a veterinarian who may know of someone who would take, it, or put it to sleep humanely.I hope other people who are faced with this problem will try to find more humane ways of dealing with it than destroying the animal in such a cruel manner, or abandoning it somewhere on a country road.Please be kind to these creatures and don’t let them suffer the consequences of your irresponsibility.The abuse and misuse of animals is only discovering the nature, spirit, and in- ‘one step away from that of human beings.Animal lover The CVESPA Column The Chateauguay Valley English Speaking Peoples’ Association Provincial success but unfortunately the outcome for the home team wasn't as great as we had hoped for.As far as the actual event is concerned it came off so well because of the superb efforts of organizers such as Bob Lalonde, Hugh Maynard and Grant Roy.However, organizers’ efforts are nothing without the help of volunteers - people like Heather Thompson, Morris Labelle and Murray McClintock, to name but a few.You know who you are and so do we and we are greatly appreciative of your generous aid.Rugby action began at 11:30 and culminated with the 3 o'clock match-up for the Standard Life Cup game.The Cup play-downs are a one-loss elimination tournament which takes two months to complete and goes on concurrently with regular league games.The Standard Life Cup is awarded to the Division I team which finishes the cup tournament undefeated.Division I involves the top teams in the Province.This year, like the two previous ones, Ste.Anne de Bellevue I's and Ormstown I's were the two finalists.This year's final was extremely physical and consequently low scoring, because anything that moved got tackled - poor referee, 1 hope he'll recover.The only scoring came midway through the first half, as Ste.Anne's out- hustled Ormstown into the commer of the end zone.Their convert attempt was good and they led, and eventually won, by the score of 6to0.Ste.Anne's played excellently and deserved the victory.They overpowered Ormstown and kept unrelenting pressure on them.To Ormstown’s credit, despite being on the defensive during most of the game, the local boys never quit as evidenced by the fact that Ste.Anne's only reached the end zone once.Among the key performers on Ormstown's side were Scott Tennant, J.P.‘Da Da" Lussier, the always steady Randy Coté and the front row comprised of Brian *‘I've got dirty” Landry, Bernie Bonenberg and Gary ‘‘Too tall’ Tennant.Although the loss to Ste.Anne's hurt, the club can still lay claim to the other half of the Province's rugby bragging rights, having already clinched the league championship with one game still remaining, on Saturday, Oct.31 in Ste.Julie against the Montreal Irish.The other Le 10 novembre, aura lieu une importante assemblée de créanciers de la compagnie Zéphyr Textiles d'Ormstown durant laquelle une décision finale sera prise dans ce dossier.La compagnie Zéphyr Textiles est en sérieuses difficultés depuis déjà un bon moment.À peine six semaines de cela, lorsqu'une proposition de faillite a été déposée, la compagnie a réduit ses opérations.Alors le nombre d’employés passait de 180 a seulement 77.Le syndic nommé par les créanciers majeurs avait reçu un mandat bien précis, soit de tenter de trouver un acheteur éventuel ou des investisseurs pouvant ainsi relancer les opérations de la compagnie.Ce mandat d'une durée de dix semaines prenait fin le vendredi 30 octobre.Durant cette période.des démarches furent nombreuses afin de trouver un acheteur.Aucun preneur fermer ne s'est fait sentir bien que des gens se soient montrés intéressés au départ.C'est pourquoi la réunion des créanciers qui aura lieu le 10 novembre sera trés importante.Alors, on prévoyait que la décision de fermer définitivement l'usine de Zéphyr Textiles sera prise, procédant ainsi à la liquidation des actifs et à la vente de l'équipement.Le geste de fermeture sera fait officiellement le 10 novembre.Mais de fait.la fermeture se fait déjà graduellement, puisque seulement une dizaine d'employés travaillent actuellement à l'usine pour assurer le démantélement des équipements.Les autres mises à pied ont été annoncées le 30 octobre dernier.Il faut donc dire qu'il s'agit d'une perte majeure d'emplois pour le secteur d'Orm- stown.Avec la fermeture.180 emplois seront perdus définitivement.Yves Proulx.représentant syndical de la Confédération des syndicats nationaux, a déclaré à La Gazette qu'une demande officielle avait été faite au ministère du Travail du Québec pour assurer la formation d'un comité de reclassement des employés mis à pied.De plus, des représentations ont été également faites auprès des députés provinciaux de la région pour que le dossier des employés de la Zéphyr soit prioritaire.Le comité de reclassement verra à définir pour les employes leur besoin tant au niveau de la scolarité qu'au niveau de la formation professionnelle.pour leur permettre de se trouver un autre emploi dans un domaine connexe ou autre.Yves Proulx a indiqué que le syndicat mène actuellement une enquête auprès des employés mis à pied pour connaître leur niveau de scolarité, leur besoin en formation professionnelle.et aussi leur situation financière, ce qui est très important.L'histoire de l'usine Zéphyr Textiles n'aura pas été la meilleure.il faut en conclure” La prochaine étape dans cette affaire se jouera le 10 novembre.L'affaire Oerlikon: L'ex-ministre de retour 9 novembre en Cour le texte de Cyril Alary Saint-Jean - L’ex- ministre d'Etat aux Petites et moyennes entreprises dans le Cabinet Mulroney subira son enquéte préliminaire le 9 novembre, relativement à des accusations de fraude et d'abus de confiance.En effet, André Bisson- nette, député de la circonscription fédérale de Saint-Jean (à laquelle tout le secteur de Hemmingford appartient) devra se rendre à nouveau au Palais de justice de Saint-Jean sur Richelieu pour répondre à six chefs d'accusation dans l'affaire Oerlikon.Toute cette affaire a éclaté le 19 janvier 1987.concernant le scandale de la vente du terrain permettant la construction de la compagnie Oerlikon.Une autre personne doit également répondre à des chefs d'accusation similaires.Il s'agit de Normand Ouellette, un ami de longue date de l'ex- ministre Bissonnette.L'enquête dans cette affaire avait été menée par la Gendarmerie royale du Canada.La décision finale quant à la mise en accusation a pris du temps à se faire entendre.Mais dès le moment de la mise en accusation des deux hommes, toute l'affaire a pris de l'ampleur.Maintenant, on attend le dénouement de cette affaire.Les gens de la cir- : conscription électorale de Saint-Jean ont des réactions partagées.Certains semblent critiquer ouvertement leur député alors que d'autres expliquent que toute l'attention provoquée par cette affaire a été bonne pour le district.En terminant, rappelons que le procureur de la Couronne dans ce dossier est Me Ellen Pagé.L'ex- ministre Bissonnette est représenté par Me Bruno Pateras.et son ami Normand Ouellette par Me.Jean Claude Hebert.L'ex-ministre André Bissonnette Aucune objection de Franklin texte de Cyril Alary Franklin - Aucune objection ne sera portée par la municipalité de Franklin à tout projet de relance d'une conserverie de nourriture animale.Cette décision a été prise par le conseil de la municipalité de Franklin, le 5 octobre dernier, après avoir pris connaissance d'une demande de la compagnie Vet-Diet Inc.En effet, cette compagnie souhaite relancer le projet de conserverie de nourriture animale pour chiens et chats que la compagnie Aristo-Raffles Inc.opérait auparavant.La seule condition que le conseil de Franklin a formulé est que toutes les exigences relativement à la protection de l'environnement soient respectées.C'est à suivre.FRANK! DESSERVANT HUNTINGDON ORMSTOWN.HEMMINGFORD HOWICK ST-ANICET, STE-BARBE £7 LES ENVIRONS Mercredi, le 4 novembre, 1987.Ville de Huntingdon: texte de Cyril Alary Huntingdon - Les employés municipaux ont accepté les termes d'un contrat de travail de trois années avec la Ville de Huntingdon.Ce qui est intéressant à constater est le fait que la présente convention collective ne prendra fin que le 31 décembre 1987.C’est la première fois qu'un contrat est négocié sans trop de problèmes et avant la date d'expiration entre les employés municipaux et les autorités de la Ville de Huntingdon.La signature du contrat s'est faite a l’occasion de la réunion mensuelle du conseil de la Ville de Huntingdon.le 2 novembre.C'est alors que le maire Gérald Brisebois et le greffier Me Richard Alary ont procédé a la signature du contrat de travail avec les employés municipaux.Ceux-ci étaient représentés par Paul Patterson et Robert Provost, deux employés de la Ville, et Robert Lachance.représentant syndical à la Confédération des syndicats nationaux.La nouvelle entente de travail d'une durée de trois ans prendra fin le 31 décembre 1990.Il n’y a aucune modification majeure à la convention: elle est essentiellement la même qui a été signée en 1985, sauf au niveau salarial.Les deux parties se sont entendues pour des hausses salariales de l'ordre de 5 pour cent par année pour la durée de la convention.L'échelle salariale des employés municipaux de la Ville se traduira ainsi dès janvier 1988: * ler janvier 1988: manoeuvres: 1031 $ l'heure - chauffeurs et opérateurs: 10,84 $ - chef d'équipe: 11,30 $ - Concierge: 7.17 $ * ler janvier 1989: - manoeuvres: 10,83 $ chauffeurs et opérateurs: 11,38 $ - chef d'équipe: 11,87 $ - concierge: 7,53 $ e ler janvier 1990 - manoeuvres: 11,37 $ chauffeurs et opérateurs: 11.95 $ - chef d'équipe: 12.46 $ - concierge: 7.91 $ On se souvient que le dernier contrat de travail des employés municipaux avait été réglé après que les employés municipaux aient déclenché une grève générale.Des déchets avaient été répandus un peu partout dans la Ville et surtout devant l'Hôtel de ville.A l'ouverture de l'assemblée du conseil.l'échevin Georges Lazure a proposé la signature de la convention collective.ce qui fut accepté uninamement par le conseil.L'échevin Jean-Paul Mainville a par la suite proposé un” vote de félicitations aux deux échevins responsables de la négociation et aux membres du Syndicat des employés municipaux pour le résultat que l'on connait maintenant.Les échevins responsables des négociations ont été Georges Lazure et Normand Nadeau.Tout le conseil municipal s'est dit enchanté par la tournure des événements.Il en est de même pour les représentants syndicaux.Paul Patterson, président du Syndicat, a tenu a téliciter le conseil pour son excellent travail.Donc.cette fois.il n'y aura pas de conflit de travail a la Ville de Huntingdon.Tout est entré dans l'ordre.Travaux de drainage dans le cours d'eau Lefebvre Québec - Monsieur Michel Pagé.ministre de l'Agriculture.des Pécheries et de l'Alimentation du Québec ainsi que le député de Huntingdon Claude Dubois et celui de Beauharnois.Serge Marcil.annoncent une subvention pour des travaux de drainage qui seront effectués dans le cours d'eau Lefebvre et branches 1 er et 2 dans les municipalités de St-Lquis- de-Gonzague et Tres-St- Sacrement.Cette decision de M Page fait suite a la demande formulée par les conseils municipaux ainsi qu'aux représentations qui lui ont été faites dans le méme sens par les députés Claude Dubois et Serge Marcil.Le coût total des ces projets 25 975,00 $ sera pris en charge par le ministère de l'Agriculture.des Pêcheries et de l'Alimentation du Québec et les travaux seront effectués par l'entrepreneur “J R.Caza et Frere Inc.” Le tout devra être terminé l'eté 1988 ‘Les travaux amélioreront une super- ficic de cent soixante-dix - sept 177 hectares permettant ains: une meilleure utilisation des sols du comté ayant une vocation agricole” de dire le ministre Pugé.S La signature de la convention collective s'est faite lundi soir.Sur la photo, l’on reconnait: (assis) Normand Nadeau.Paul Patterson, Gérald Brisebois, \\_ Georges Lazure;
