seen in above photo which shows the Eastwood Farm on Route 138A.About 3 to 1 inches of rain fell in the short period of 30 to 40 minutes.accompanied by hail in some spots.In fact, the Eastwood Farm was the only one to get hail in our area.Diane Miller who lives in the house on the Eastwood Farm says the hail scared their horses who were lied up in the gully near the house.It didn't break the window panes but damaged the frames which are in cedar.A lot of people drove by to look at the hail piled up on the lawn.On the Miller's back verandah.there was an accumulation of about 20 inches of hail.Nothing but blue skies beaming at Hinchinbrooke Firemen's B by Diane Farquhar sunsnine ana warm temperatures combined as a perfect setting for the first annual breakfast served by the Hin- chinbrooke Volunteer Fire Brigade on May 22 in the Rockburn Cultural Centre.By 7 a.m.firemen from all over the municipality began arriving to heat up the grills and start perking the coffee.People from miles around, even from across the border came to enjoy a delicious hearty breakfast of ham, bacon, scrambled eggs, homefties, sliced tomatoes, served up with lots of toast by the men.The men did this project all on their own with the exception of a little help from Beryl Myatt who gave a hand with ordering supplies, etc.For the sweet tooth, Richard Grant, and his crew were on hand to make fresh®onuts right on the premises.A total of 325 dozens were made during the day.many of which were sold by the dozen.A total of 615 people were served by 2 p.m.This was a reminder of the days when the firemen and their wives and families served the well-known Havelock Fair dinner.It is plain to see the community bas great respect for the fire department and once again have turned out to show their support.This event was held to celebrate the 25th an niversary of the Fire Brigade.Open House The new fire sub-station in Rockbum was open to the public during the day.Folks had a chance to see the Brigade\u2019s three trucks which were nicely shined up for the occasion.Also on display were two antique fire-fighting items: a hand pump which was given to the Fire Brigade by the Rennie family from the Leslie Rennie Museum on the First Concession, the other a 150-year-old antique hose roller which was brought from Switzerland.Unveiling Several years ago the late Ken Johnstone who was a great supporter of the Fire Department, donated to the municipality an acre of land on the Route 202 in the village of Rockburn.This land was to be used for a sub-station, for extra fire protection for the municipality.After having built the station, the municipal council decided to use the remainder of the lot for a park.which will also be used to install a skating rink in winter.The council decided to name the park the Kenneth Johnstone park.It was a touching moment when Ken's lovely daughter Nahani unveiled a beautiful sign tastefully created by Brent Harrison.Mayor Roland Greenbank gave a few remarks about Nahani's young life in Rockburn and also of the interest her dad had in the Valley as well.Welcome Home Nahani was pleased to be back in her home town.She has been working as a model and is presently living in New York City with her mom.Nahani has had a chance to meet old friends and visit her old home on the Rockburn sideroad while spending a few days around Rockburn.Important meeting in Havelock A special meeting of Havelock municipal council will be held on Monday, May 30 to discuss the local dump site which is owned by Guy Prévost.It seems a contractor from Longueuil is interested in purchasing this site to enlarge it and use as a dump.This site would more or less become a regional dump.The plan seems to meet with the approval of the Quebec Environment Ministry.At next Monday's meeting.a representative from this ministry, Mr.Brisson, will be there to discuss the matter.as will be the Longueuil contractor, Mr.Fortin.Very worried about this new turn of events, some citizens took it upon themselves on Monday .May 23, to distribute flyers to all households in Havelock.explaining the situation, and urging people to attend the meeting Ramona Rougerie For those who may have wondered what was happening on route 201 near the Camping Lac des Pins last week, with the long line of vehicles parked on the west side of the road, and a lot of activity on a building site, what they saw was a fine example of human beings cooperating with each other in order to achieve a goal.What was happening in fact was the building of a Kingdom Hall by a group of volunteer Jehovah's Witnesses who came from this area from all over the western part of Quebec.Starting on Wednesday morning.an army of volunteers converged on the site to build in five days a 60 x 40 new Kingdom Hall for the 40-member Rockburn Congregation of the Jehovah's Witnesses.The congregation's former hall in Rockburn has outlived its purpose and it was sold to a woman who will make it her home.The small Rockburn Congregation was helped in its endeavor by the West Quebec Building Committee whicharrived on the site with a trailer rig truck full of all necessary equipment, including saws.ladders, scaffolding.tools.etc.The Building Committee also offers the services of a cook who feeds the volunteers three meals and twosnacksa day.He hasat his disposal a trailer kitchen equipped with everything he may need Around the weekend.it was expected that sume 200 to 300 men would be on the site to help complete the building.which will include an apartment to house a member of the congregation and his family.This member will act as caretaker for the building.This kind of venture requires very precise planning.Experienced tradesmen such as elec tricians.plumbers, car- penters, etc.are on hand.They come from all over Quebec.One couple even came from New Brunswick - a previous assignment for this couple was building a Kingdom Hall in the Caribbean island of San Martin last winter À spokesman for the Jehovah's Witnesses said that every year they build about one hall a month.from May to October Crystal Koon who grew up in Hemmingford denouncing what it called an abundance of \u2018hype\u2019 and \u201cspeculation\u201d on the subject of illiteracy.The editorial, which was written not long after the Canadian Business Task Force released its shocking results to a naive and unsuspecting Canadian public, was unfortunately all too predicatable.People won\u2019t believe what they don\u2019t want to believe.And the results of this task force certainly seemed unbelievable.It told us that 4.5 million adult Canadians - or approximately one in six people in this country - are functionally illiterate.Among high school dropouts, the functional illiteracy rate is 22 per cent.For high school graduates, the rate is an alarming 13 per cent.And the number of functional illiterates in Canada is currently growing at a rate of 30,000 per year.The problem, however, isn't money - Canada is already pouring billions of dollars into its educational system - in fact several studies show that we spend more per capita on education than any other country belonging to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).What we do need, say groups like the Canadian Federation of In- dependant Business, is better value for that $37 billion.CFIB and its members, for example, have long been aware of the illiteracy problem in Canada.A recent CFIB study found that almost half its members are experiencing a problem with finding qualified labor and literacy is often cited as one of the biggest barriers.Small business, therefore, has a large stake in finding a solution to this problem.During a meeting with then- minister David Crombie last spring in Ottawa, CFIB officials presented the government with several workable recommendations.After Crombie\u2019's sudden resignation, however, the whole question of illiteracy has been put on hold.There is still no word whether Crombie\u2019's replacement, Lucien Bouchard, will accept these recommendations.For starters, CFIB would like to see a more finely-tuned integration between the Canadian Job Strategy and its counterparts in the provinces.And for the long-term unemployed, an upgrading of literacy skills is often the only chance these people have for reintegration into the workforce.CFIB would like to see some of the $2.8 billion currently spent on Regional Extended benefits (under the unemployment insurance program) transferred into a literacy- training program.It is important that both employers and workers undertand the urgency of upgrading the literacy skills in our workforce - both sides will eventually benefit from the attention.Another CFIB recommendation, for example, would see illiterate employees taking paid time from their jobs - perhaps 30 minutes per day - to take the necessary courses required to upgrade their skills.These workers saving time and standard time for the summer months.At the council meeting on Monday evening every member of the council seemed to be in favour of daylight saving time.In addition to this, a petition was placed before them which contained the names of about sixty Huntingdon residents who desired to have daylight saving time, Not since the war years has daylight saving time been in effect in Hun- tingdon.A few years ago an attempt was again made to put it into effect.On June 20, 1935, the referendum was placed before Huntingdon citizens when daylight saving time was voted down by 104 to 68.CI undertaken in 1987.A complete report of the situation, together with recommendations, was submitted to the Mon- teregie Health and Social Services Council.The major areas of concern in the CVESPA report were the lack of mental health services, the need for a shelter for English-speaking victims of family violence, the need for reception and emergency services in English, the need for an information program to advise the English- speaking population about services provided across the region, and the need for increased awareness on the part of institutions to the existence of the English- speaking population, Committee on Accessibility The CVESPA report formed the basis for study bv their committee on accessibility of services to the anglophone population.The committee was established as part of the implementation of Bill 142, \u201cguaranteeing\u201d health and social services in English.CVESPA vice-president, Ken Hamilton, has been an active member of the Montérégie committee.The committee has now submitted its preliminary report and recommendations, however it remains to be seen if any improvements can be expected, in view of the Minister's declaration that no Directors of the Ormstown Centre d'accueil was abolished by the government and the Centre became part of the Valleyfieid and Coteau Landing complex.This now leaves the citizens of the MRC Haut St.Laurent without any control over the centre d'accueil in its territorv.2.EDUCATION i.Autumn Conference In the area of education, CVESPA held a conference in Chateauguay, in October of 1987.to discuss the future of the English- language education system in southwest Quebec.The concerns and aspirations of parents, commissioners, administrators and teachers in both Protestant and Catholic systems were expressed in a discussion of the serious challenges facing the community .2.Meeting to discuss new education legislation In February 1988, a meeting was held in Orm- stown for school committees, principals and other individuals interested in learning about the new education legislation, Bills 106 and 107, which will radically alter the face of English education, 3.Task Force on premature school leavings At the request of parents, a task force was created to look into the situation of students leaving high school prematurely.Consultations with school administrators, clergy, guidance counsellors, parents and students is underway.3.COMMUNICATIONS 1.\u201cThis.Week in the Chateauguay Valley\" In Marchof 1987, CVESPA worked out an agreement with Channel 57, WCFE in Plattsburgh to produce a weekly television program to bring information to the community.\u2018This Week in the Chateauguay Valley\" is into its second year and is enjoying enthusiastic support form the community.2.The Southwest Quebec Dialogue An important step was achieved with the creation of The Southwest Quebec Dialogue, in May 1987.Six issues were published in the first year of the paper, with an average circulation of 9,000 copies.The paper has been- well-received in the community and was partially supported by local businesses during its first year.Dialogue was published by CVESPA until Marchof 1988.3.Southwest Publishing In March, 1988, the association completed the incorporation of a nonprofit organization, Southwest Quebec Publishing, to publish \u201cDialogue\u201d and other local works.4.Chateauguay Valley Broadcasting The new local radio station project, initiated by CVESPA, has completed its proposed programming Quebec and technical requirements to obtain a license.\u2018\u2018Chateauguay Valley Broadcasting\u2019 must now show that the community wants and will support it own Valley Radio.CVB will be soliciting \u2018pledges\u2019 of support during the summer.5.Community Television During 1987, CVESPA helped develop a regular weekly T.V.Program \u2018\u2018Chateauguay Valley Reflections\u2019 on the community television network of Videotron, through Channel 9 (CTGC) in Chateauguay.\u2018\u2018Chateauguay Valey Reflections\u2019 is still running on CTGC and we encourage anyone interested to contact the station to help it continue English broadcasting in Chateauguay.6.AQREM Supplement In the Spring of 1987.we participated with the other English-speaking Regional Associations in Quebec to publish a supplement that was included in all a CLSC community organizer is to help get things started by Ramena Reugerie The Huntingdon CLSC has on its staff two community organizers: Gisèle Martin and Elizabeth Kater.The work done by Mrs.Martin has already been described in an earlier write-up.As for Mrs.Kater, her work centers on a Mother and Infant Care Program called A.R.M.(Association Ressources-Maternité or Maternal Resources Association) and on special programs for adults, such as supporting the ADDS.(Association pour la defense des droits sociaux or Association for the Defense of social rights).Mrs.Kater is also available to any community group needing help to get started.For example, Mrs.Kater was one of the people who helped set up the local chapter of Centraide.She also played a role in the establishment of the Kaleidoscope Day Care Centre.The principie behind the action of a community organizer, as explained by Mrs.Kater, is to help people get things started.and once they're able to manage by in Torre Molinos.Among the many ancient and beautiful cities they visited were Cordoba and Seville, where they spent two exciting days.In Cordoba they visited an ancient Mecca, once used by the Turks for their prayer sessions.This Mecca was eventually purchased by the Christians who have now changed it to house 42 beautiful chapels in this delightful old city.While in this area they took the opportunity of visiting the famous wine ave in Jerez.which was first used for wine making in the year 1795.Here they were invited to sample the delicious wines and sherry produced there.They visited the Mediterranean sea port of Malaga.and afterwards they all boarded a small bus and crossed the border into Gibraltar, a very old and interesting British fortress.They ascended 2500 feet up the \u201cRock\u201d.and were enthralled to visit the many caves and tunnels with which the rock is peppered.The visitors were entertained by various side shows presented in some of the caves, and they were also introduced to some of the \u201cRock Apes\u2019.which included \u2018Churchill, \u201cThatcher.\u2018Grandmother\u2019 and many other famous names.\u2019 They were all especially intrigued Mme Kater.son travail est centré sur le programme AR.M.(Association Ressources- Maternité) et sur des programmes spéciaux pour adultes défavorisés tels que l'Association pour la défense des droits sociaux (ADDS).Mme Kater est aussi disponible pour aider à tout groupe communautaire qui désire s'organiser.Par exemple, Mme Kater a été parmi les personnes qui ont établi la section locale de Centraide.Elle a aussi joué un rôle dans la fondation de la Garderie Kaléidoscope à Hun- tingdon.Le principe qui sous-tend l'action d'une organisatrice communautaire, selon Mme Kater, est d'aider aux également à chacun de nous.de nombreux et de beaux souvenirs.I y a environ 4 ans, un peu par le hasard des choses.nous apprenions que soeur Amanda-Marie céelébrerait son Jubilé d'Or en 1988, soit a vrai dire, religieuse.52 ans de vie À partir de ce moment, nous nous sommes donnes le mot et c'est ainsi qu'aujourd'hui nous voila réunis autour d'elle.Nous vivons donc un moment privilégié.un moment plein d'émotion, un moment qui nous permet de rendre hommage, comme il se doit, à celle qui nous à vus grandir au cours de ces 20 années à Ormstown Votre présence au sein de la communaute des gens de notre paroisse aura êté un élément déterminant dans la vie de chacun de nous.Votre amour de la jeunesse, votre dévouement.votre souci de l'engagement personnel, resteront longtemps gravés dans nos demi.Soeur Amanda-Marie est arrivée a Ormstown en 1938 ou elle enseigna à l\u2019école Le maire Soeur Amanda-Marie à participé directement au service religieux soulignant le 50e anniversaire de sa présence à Ormstown.Notre-Dame du Rosaire jusqu'en 1958.Jusqu'en 1960, elle a été directrice à Saint-Timothée.De 1960 à 1965, elle a agi a titre de Supérieure à Saint-Bruno.et de 1965 à 1969 à Beloeil.De 1969 a 1971.elle a ete directrice du Pensionnat Marie-Rose a Montréal.De 1971 a 1978, elle occupa le poste de Supérieure au Pensionnat Marie-Rose à Montréal.En 1978.elle occupa le poste de Supérieure a LaPatrie.et de 1979 à 1985 à Saint- Hilaire.Une célébration eucharistique a été chantée par le Pere Yves Beaulieu en l'église de la Paroisse Saint-Malachie.le 15 mai à 13 heures.On
