renovate the Hun- tingdon County Hospital will be undertaken in three distinct stages.It was on November 24 that the MNA for Beauharnois-Huntingdon, André Chenail announced the $2.4 million project.Jacques Renaud, Director General of the Hospital, informed The Gleaner that the work would not be starting right away, as many believe, but each step of the project must be cleared and all are equally important.The first step in this project is the consultation between six different groups.They include three groups of personnel concerned with patient care, administration, professionals, and technical concept and orientation that must be put up in place for the Hospital.The Director General explained that the Hunting- don County Hospital will be giving therapeutic treatment aimed at rehabilitation.They will ensure a well equipped plan of service.The architects will see 6 the preparation of plans that are expected to be completed by the end of next May or June.At this time the Hospital can proceed an dcall for tenders for this first phase of the work project.The start of work will at the earliest be in Juen and at the outside, September 1990.The work project in the first Governors, and the response from the community that has held steadfast over the years.One founding member of that Board is still alive today.Dr.Jim Quintin\u2019s greetings and good wishes were expressed by Dr.Gerry Sutton, himself a \u201c\u201clegend\u2019\u2019 in the community, Dr.Sutton delivered nearly 5,000 babies.Dr.Sutton shared some of his fond memories from the early years at The Barrie.He is credited with being the first one to suggest a special celebration to mark the 50 years to the date on December 2.Mr.Wink Keeler, who holds positions on the three levels of administration spoke of the \u201c\u2018loyal dedication of all the staff, of their interest and concern.\u2019\u2019 He emphasized to the community that \u2018\u201cbecause you care for your Hospital, your Hospital will care for you when the need arises.\u201d The Secretary-Treasurer, Bill Fearns, deserves special attention, explained Eric Rumsby, as he does a valuable service to keep the accounts.Dr.Merrill Stalker, who was present at the regional Barrie opening as an elevator operator, felt\u2018\u201cprivileged to be part.\u201d He also represents his father who was so deeply involved in The Barrie.He said it is through the \u2018\u2018efforts of all people and others in the community, but especially the volunteers and those who faithfully support the Hospital,\u201d that the Barrie continues successfully.\u2018\u201cDoctors do their part, but they need a place to work,\u2019 he emphasized.The President of the Women\u2019s Auxiliary, Ilse Lalibertie, explained that the 2,000 member Auxil- liary is concerned with the well-being of patients and staff, and for their part assume the furnishings of the Hospital.\u2019 The Director of Professionnal Services, Dr.B.G.Thompson, spoke more about the things that have remained the same at the Barrie over the past 50 years.He recalled that the year 1939 was the era of penicillin.He pointed out three elements that have remained the same, + The Firemen have not had time to cool off, even with the freezing temperatures.Since December 1 the firemen have answered seven calls in six days, including of course the truck/train collision in Brysonville.Talk about perfect timing.The Ormstown firemen had taken $900 of the $4 000 proceeds from their benefit dance earlier in November and purchased a cellular phone for the rescue truck.It had only been in place four days when it became the \u2018\u2018hot\u2019\u2019 item at the train de-raiment and fire.CN, the police, and other Mutual Aid stations had immediate access to phone service to dispatch for help, receive a listing of toxic and explosive chemicals \u2018contained in railcars.and co- ordinate field to station activities.A cellular phone in the rescue truck enables the- firemen to act as a mobile command and rescue unit, and have direct communication to hospitals, ambulance, police and technical assistance, such as expertise in a situation involving chemical or hazardous materials.It was unanimously agreed to purchase the phone, realizing the critical service it provides when seconds count to avert a tragedy.A recall indicates that the Firemen answered the following calls: December 1, 1 p.m.; 12 firemen were called to Zephyer Textile to investigate an alarm that revealed a faulty alarm system.December 2, 9 a.m.; 10 men were dispatched to Piscine Uni to discover a Fireman Sidney Daniel demonstrates the cellular phone in the rescue truck.This faulty alarm system.December 3, 8 p.m.; 18 men determined the source for the fire call to be an overhead heater at the de-railment in Brysonville.to Riverfield for a house fire.A tanker, air bottles and three firemen responded.December 4, the firemen responded as part of the Mutual Aid support for the Howick Fire Department has taken their turn with their stand-by pumper at the Howick Fire Hall.This is part of the Mutual Aid agreement that determines that no station is not covered, and that there will always be a back-up unit.This covering was necessary as the Howick Firemen has been assigned over 60 hours at the accident site to provide stand-by surveillance as CN was enacting clean-up operations and siphoning propane and other liquid materials from * the de-railed train cars.The Ministry of Environ- See page 10 The Merchants Association satisfied with improvements The Huntingdon Merchants Association has said it is very satisfied with the snow removal efforts on Chateauguay St.following the first major snowfall.This is what the President of the Association, André Castagnier fhentioned to the Town Council at théir\u2018last regular meeting on December 4.As well, The Merchants underlined their appreciation to the Council for the installation of a Christmas tree in the Town triangle on Chateauguay St.It is a tradition for Huntingdon.André Castagnier also told the Council that the Association would like some time to bring suggestions concerning the placement of waste containers on Chateauguay St.The Mayor, Gerald Brisebois told the representatives from The Merchants that the Council will construct a new sidewalk on one side of Chateauguay St.The Council would like to install the containers at the same time as the new sidewalks.It is precisely this aspect that The Merchants would like to give suggestions to the Council.It appears that all will be discussed at a future assembly to the Council in March.The work projects will not be started before the end of April.As to the placement of signs indicating Municipal Parking, the Merchants have taken note that the Town foreman has not yet recieved catalogues from companies who sell signs.Howick man killed in hit and run car accident: Police seek information The St.Martine detachment of the QPF are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of Jean-Denis Jodoin, aged 68.who was overtaken by a car.The hit-and-run offence took place in front of 7 Bridge St.in Howick.The Police are asking the public's celebrating the\u2019 90th year of the Ladies Club.The club rooms and the walls around the.ice were decorated with Christmas decorations, old fashioned drawings and articles brought in by Betty McGerrigle, Irene E.Hamilton, Isabel Temple- ton, Debbie Waller, Linda Rember and Mary Stevenson.There were lovely old fashioned clothes, quilts, a post card album, an old cradle with a doll in it, a child's story book, flat: irons, an oil lamp with a baby bottle warmer on top, and a dear little old lady all dressed up in her finery \u2014 gloves.buttoned boots and her steel rimmed glasses.She sat in her rocking chair every day.There was a list of names on the wall with the names of all presidents since 1899.These names were all printed by Mary Stevenson in her beautiful script writing.They were Miss Laura Walsh who held the office for 50 years, Mrs.Margaret Lindsay, Mrs.Olive Bradley, Mrs.Nell Garts- hore, Mrs.Alice McMahon.Mrs.Helena McCaf- frey.Mrs.Anna Sault, Mrs.Dorothy anniversaries.emergency plan The actuality of a plan for emergency measures was discussed by the Town of Huntingdon municipal council at its last regular meeting on December 4.It appears that the recent truck- train collision at Brysonville has made many municipalities see the importance to have emergency plans of action.This accident has caused fear in many persons.It could very well have been an ecological disaster.It is always perferable to be ready for all possibilities.This is why the Town has decided to bring up to date its emergency plans, which have not been revised in the last it is physically demanding work putting on such a show.The kites dive toward the crowd seated on the bleachers, and only feet over their heads, the audience hears the kites cutting through the air, tails flapping.The same show is performed on water, with speed boats serving as the \u2018wind machines\u2019.Two boats pass in the middle of the lake with four trails of kites performing a precision pass known as \u201cthreading the needle\u201d.The choreogrpahy is smooth; the manoeuver well-rehearsed.The audience sees the beauty of the kites and hears only the accompanying music.But behind the scenes, the sounds are less calming; Pete Foy, with one ear tuned to the music and a headset communicating with the other pilots, instructs with cues for the precision manoeuvers: names like \u201cStitch in time\u201d, \u201cMushroom\u201d, \u201cFigure 8\u201d, *\u2018Synch dive\u201d and \u201cleft circle\u201d.Boats must adjust their speed to the speed of the headwind and then, as they turn, they must adjust to the downwind direction.\u2019 The crowds love it, especially night performances which feature kites flying in spotlights and kites with their own lights against a dark sky.Special kites such as a colorful, spiralling 100-foot-long wind sock draw oohs and ahs without fail.Achieving, the excellence of these shows has not come by accident.Practice, as well as mistakes, have been the teacher of Shooting Star Kite Shows.And mishaps are part of the business.Last summer at Disney World, putting in 9 - hour days, fatigue became the cause of most of the accidents.One girl of the ground crew broke her pelvic bone falling off the barge and a series of minor accidents occurred, including the pilots who wrestle the force of the kites.Kites, too, have been blown apart by too much wind or they have collided on tricky manoeuvers like \u201cthreading the needle.\u201d Photo Phillip Norton Pete Foy and son Jamie, 11, are year-round kite enthusiasts at their home on Ridge Road.The \u2018\u201cRevolution\u2019\u2019 kite is a new steerable kite with quadruple controls allowing it to move forward, left, right and backward or halting in mid-air.Jamie is a talented pilot, says his father, and there is no lack of interest among the other children: Maude, 14, Fiona, 9, and Ashley, 7.: SKI TIME! Pete\u2019s business is a bit different from his neighbors who farm.in fact, Pete\u2019s business is a bit different, period: he flies kites.Show biz backgrounds Its this unique profession that carried the Foys to Orlando, Florida last summer when Walt Diseny World\u2019s Epcot Center got wind of Pete's company \u201cShooting Star Kite Show\u201d.That world-class contract has been the pinnacle of Pete's five-year career.The stay in Florida was all work - putting on shows seven days a week, five shows a day, 9-hour days in 100 degree weather.The crew included the stage manager (which is Pete's professional background), four boat drivers, seven ground crew, and three kite pilots.Meanwhile, back home, the regular Shooting Star Kite Show circuit continued to tour Quebec, putting on performances at 40 events including the Valleyfield Regatta and the St.Jean Balloon Festival.That province-wide tour was underwritten by Mike's Restaurants and Pete set up a special crew to take the show on the road.The spectacular performance of long \u201ctrains\u201d of kites doing aerobatics behind a speedboat or four- wheeler has its origins on Chatcauguay Street in Hun- tingdon.In 1982 the Foys opened the gift shop Chez Ma Tante Marthe and among the items on sale were Peter Powell Kites.Peter Powell.an Englishman.had developed the first stunt kite about 20 years ago and Pete Foy's fascination with this \u2018\u2018steerable kite\u201d would literally carry the invention to new heights.The Shooting Star Kite Show made the history hooks last year when it performed indoors - the first time in the world - at Montreal\u2019s newly-roofed Olympic Stadium.They created \u201cwind\u201d by towing the kites behind four-wheel All Terrain Vehicles, their \u201cwind machines\u201d.says Pete.A new sport Although some ot the first steerable kites date back to World War [ when men were lifted over trees to observe enemy lines and the US.Navy rudder- controlled kites for target practice, flying stunt kites for fun is a very new sport.Pete Foy greatly attributes the success of their company to the timing;
