It means this: A desire first of all for equality of opportunity; an equality of remuneration and equality of political rights. Then in Quebec we would have to get at the laws affecting women and do a little tinkering. What is the stotus 2f women in this province?Well, pretty low, 1 think, on the whole, lower than in any country 1 know of.quality of Opportunity. What do you mean?We mean by this that a woman is as good a judge of what she will do with her life as a man.It was the Creator’s idea ,of course, that every woman should have a man.But in England there are two million more women than men. There is no law that compels a man to marry and even widowers are not obliged to take a second chance. So unless our friends who say that women’s place is in the home are prepared to bring in a law advocating polygamy I do not see how they can ensure every woman a home.Woren should have the chance to decide what they want to do.For instance, women can now be doctors in Quebec.1t was here in Huntingdon heard a letter read in reference to a request from the missionary societies that women should be alowed to st vd» medicine. It seemed that there was no objection on the part of the Governors of McGill, but to bring that about i would be necessary to erect a separate medical college for women wrich would cost about a million dollars.|! do not know what happened between June and October. That Fall four women applied for admittance to the medical classes and were accepted.I have tried my best to find out what happened but cannot.T think possibly — the authorities decided that it was easier to admit these women than tu explain why they could not be admitted. In Quebec n woman could not practice law .or become a notary.Thev could become druggists but the number admitted to the Society was strictly limited and it was fatal if a woman should hend the examination results! The Society 1 belong to wrote and wrote again asking why more women were not allowed to be druggists and finally got the reply that it was too hard a profession for women, the hours were too long and besides women did not have enough money to start in business.A woman did graduate as a dentist in this Province but there are a great many restrictions. What the feminists ask is merely to be allowed to decide for themselves what they want to be the same as men do.If they make a failure of their profession or calling it will be their own funeral and no onc else needs to worry about it.1 have never head of a woman here wanting to become n minister.1 suppose that they are overworked and underpaid and the women know all about that already.Next to equality of opportunity we desire equality of remuneration, I am not going to touch on the very delicate question that you have down for de- hate—that wives shoud be paid a sal- ary—because 1 realize that many men would go bankrupt if they paid their wives for the work they do.We will take, however, the teaching profession.1 know of two young peo- ple—a young woman and a young man who grnduated together from Macdonald College. They were teaching together on the same floor and teaching the same.class, The young woman was admitted to be the best teacher. The young man began at a salary to which the young woman could not attain if she taught all her life. That is not fair or right.Sex should not be the consideration, hut the ability to perform the work properly. Then we desire equality in political rights.1 want to say that here in Quebec where we have not got the provincial franchise that it is not a question of politics because both parties are absolutely alike. It is simply a question of mentality, this refusal to give us the vote. For a long time wey get anyone to bring in a could not - Continued on page & SPCA TAG DAY NETS $1795 Mrs.W.K.Philps to be Congratulated Upon Energy Put Forth in Organizing 1926 VALLEYFIELD HEARS GRAND MUSICAL Institute Hall Taxed the Limit on Friday Night VALLEYFIELD On Friday evening, June 11th, the Ladies’ Aid Society of the non-concur- ring Presbyterian Church gave a concert that will long be remembered as one of the best of its kind ever heard in the town. The hall of the Gault Institute was crowded witu those who had come’ to enjoy the evening.Long before the opening number, seals were at a premium. It was a gala night, one of those rare occasions when the aud- Gault to icnce was dined and wined upon the choicest and most select morsels of music, song, expression and dance. The programme was more like a draw- ing-room musicale than like an ensemble of numbers rendered in the country. If any person came expecting to hear jazz or popular airs, he must have gone away disappointed; if he came to scoff, he remained to pray. One of the few criticising that might be levelled, is that the musical menu was a little too rich in fare, too intensely concentrated, almost conducive to indigestion for the individual whose tustes have heen in the main, very plain and simple. However, the programine was a sort of Christmas Day as programmes usyally go and an oasis in a desert of banalities. The lighting of the hall was effective, the stiyre was decorated with ferns, potted und cut flowers from the conservatory uf Mi.J.Lowe, while the back was huag with draperies that harmonised with the green setting, Truly upples of gold, in pictures of silver. For the first time in many years, the ventilation was satisfactory in the highest degree. With such a large gathering, there was not the oppression and heat that is the usual feature of these affairs. And too, the audience had no opportunity to grow wearly us the program wus completed in two hours, notwithstanding the response to many encores.Mr.Irwin Cooper, Mrs.Bacn, render ed several piano solos which were appreciated, among them Edward Gers- man's delightful *Shepherd’s Dance.” Schultz's “Tendre Aveu.” As one of his encores, he gave Grieg's “Papillon” with all the lightness and suggestion that is held in that fine composition.Mz, Cooper's sympathetic and unobtrusive accompaniments certainly made easier the task of the soloists, for his work formed a background that only un master could give.Miss Ethel Gray of Montreal was in good voice and sang several songs in an acceptable manner .Her selections were in kerp- ing with the season, Woodman's “April Ruin™ and Batten'’s “April Morning,” being two of the numbers, while an old French Translation “Come, Sweet Morning,” completed a trilogy of appealing songs. Her last number “Fairies’ was written by Mr.Cooper himself.Mr.George W.Holden's voice grows fuller and richer. His baritone is warm with feeling and laden with .promise He sings us though he enjoys singing and his presence wus more than pleasing. His voice is displayed to best advantage îÎn Tecitatives or arias of the robust type. When he sang Handel's “Revenge, Revenge, Timotheus Cries,” he conjured up for the eve to see and the ear to hear all the dread things that bespoke hatred and malice, Not many will forget Vaughan William's “The Vagabond” which he sang with unusual fervour and élan. His contribution also included Ireland's “When Lights Go Rolling Round the Skies” and Keel's “Mother Carey.” A trio, Miss Gnaedingery piano, Miss Edith M.Gray and cello, Mr.L.Gnaedinger.gave two selections, ““Allegro” by Bohm and “Contretanz” by Gade.1t is to be regretted that this trio made only: the one appearance.Miss Phyllis Lyth convulsed the audience with her reading of Hare's “Betty at the Base-ball Game.” She was very much at home and in a easy, informal manner made her hearers feel and think as she wished. She had the human touch that foretells an effective future. Her character of Sis Hopkins was well done but she displayed her historic talents most ably in Drummond’s “Wreck of the ‘Julie Flant’” and this was given in an encore.Miss Peggy Pattison’s Highland dancing was a source of enjoyment to anyone who delights in rhythm of movement.Mr.John Lowe made a felicitous speech during the intermission when he called attention to the drray of fine talent on the program and expressed thanks to the audience for its good attendance.OUNDEE Rev.Mr.Haughton and Mrs.Haugh- ton attended the graduating exercises nt Macdonald College last Thursday, when their daughter Miss Ola graduated. They also attended several of the meetings of the General Council of the United Church of Canada, from which Rev.Mr, Haughton brought back a very interesting and
