Hall, dee Centre Tuesday evening, Nr.Sutherland of Quebec gave an interesting and instructive address on School Consolidation.Much enthusiasm in favor of consolidation prevailed among those present and a resolution was passed that the School Commissioners proceed as soon as possible in the erection of a new school, A committee was also anpointed to assist the Commissioners in their task.It is a little late now to have such a school in operation this year.as several teachers are already engaged and certain routine has to be observed but the move is in the right direction.and we trust the school will be in ex- istenee for another year.Possibly there are some who may not be in favor of this, ux it will mean increased taxation, but Mr Sutherland pointed out clearly that this would not he burdensome, and the advantages wouad more than compensate the outlay in many respects., Farms will be worth more with such an institution in the community, When it is up, the people will he proud of it.so will the pupils. It will be an incentive to remain in the community, and the children of the future will have opportunities of education denied 10 those of former days.We sincerely hope and trust that all the ratepavers concerned will view the matter generously and assist in making their lives count in helping to fit the hoys and girls of our homes for future citizenship and service.A vote of Gay, Collins, Stephen, Allan and Dr.Shanks.A number of the choir for these services came from the neighbouring congregations and to whom the Rev.J.I.Hughes expressed the thanks of the congregation in particular when expressing thanks and words of praise to the choir. The Opening Tea Meeting.Friday evening the Ladies’ Aid Society members catered for the Church Opening Tea Meeting. The attendance was large and the ladies served bountiful and delicious suppers from six until after eight o'clock. At this hour the people assembled in the auditorium where brief remarks were made by the visiting brethren.Dr.H.R.Clouston, who was secretary of the building committee made a short report on their activities. His report showed that the committee were most diligent and exacting in the carrying out of the set plans. The contractors Messrs.Faulkner and Car- ruthers were called upon to speak but declined with thanks. Here it might be truthfully said that the contractors, the building committee and the architect Mr.Forbes and Mr.Geo.Simpson the supervisor are to be congratulated upon erecting such a magnificent church.Mr.R.S.Pringle and Mr.Alex.McEdwards were the vencassers for the building fund, so Mr.Pringle was called upon to make u report on same. The financial report was published some months ago and Mr.Pringle stated that they were more than pleased with the results of their labours which at first appeared ns almost an undue task for two men.He said they were greatly pleased with the voluntary contributions made and particularly when $0 many young men gave so freely of their savings. The choir rendered a number of anthems, solos and quartettes all of which were greatly appreciated, the new organ coming in for many favorable comments.Sunday brought unfavorable weather for people driving distances but even though such prevailed on Sunday the attendances at the Sunday opening services in the church were most gratifying. At both the morning and evening services the auditorium was filled to its capacity whilst at the evening service a number of chairs occupied the aisles.Rev.W.S.Lennon, B.A, D.D., of Sherbrooke, was the special preacher on Sunday. His sermons both morning and evening were most instructive and inspiring and were heard with deep interest by large congregations. In the morning taking as his test John 4:38 “Others have labored, and ye have entered into their labor,” he announced as his subject, “Our Humbling Inheritance.” In many fields of life we must recognize the inheritance handed down to us by those who went before. We must be humble that the great credit for the present benefits belongs not to us but to them. This is so in the history of civilization, in the development of the life of our nation and in fields of industry as for instance agricultural life.We may wisely carry this thought with us into our estimate of the United Church. This congregation today in its new edifice may well accord to pastors and congregation of past days a great part of the praise for the new church. It rests with us to see that we are humble in the fact of that great heritage and diligent, that by entering into the labors of our forebears we have a real heritage to hand down to those coming after us., In the evening the Table Talk of Jesus.” He took as his text Luke 7:33-34.He noted that Jesus rather than being a formal preacher largely gave utterance to his teaching in casual conversation. His teaching was largely occasional and spontaneous.A good portion of it was while at the table. The preacher cited examples of this kind.At the house of the Pharisee on the Sabbath he silenced his critics when he asked them about healing; he then proceeded to speak of the ambition for chief seats to the guests, and of the absence of the hungry man to the host and ended by pointedly facing all with the question as to whether they had accepted the invitation to enter the Kingdom. At another Pharisee's table where he had received scant hospitality and where the sinful woman had shown her devotion he taught that your spiritual experience is measured by the return you seek to make.In the home in Bethany he answered Judas with the fact that love ceases to count the cost.At the last supper he had pointed to the highest degree in his, school—#That you should do as 1 have, done to vou.” He had also there made known that those closest ‘to him have the power to injure him most.” The Organ Recital.subject was “The Tuesday evening the auditorium of the United Church was well filled by an ap- precintive audience who listened to the Organ Recital. The special organist for the occasion was Mr, D.M, Herbert, organist of the American United Chureh of Montreal. The organ selections were beautiful.‘The organ programme was varied by solos by Mrs.Wood and Mrs.Reese, a duet by Mrs.Reese and Mr.J.B.McMillan and a reading entitled “The Organ Builder™ by Mrs.F.G.Braithwaite, WORTH HALF A CENT EA The Huntingdon Gleaner | and The Montreal Daily Star For One Year For $5.50 Remit Your Subscription to THE HUNTINGDON GLEANER.United Church Formally Opened THE PRESENT BUILDING.Though built on the same foundations and largely with the same walls the new edifice has changed greatly in appearance from that erected by the Methodists 47 years ago.Following the modern tendency the spire has been replaced by the ancient type of battlemented tower. This is covered with copper. On the roof proper, Canadian Johns Manville shingles have replaced Welsh slate. The former internal arrangement was so satisfactory for congregational purposes that only slight changes have been made which seemed to promise a little better use of the building. The stairs to the auditorium are easier than the old ones.At the tops are four unusually beautiful stained glass memorial windows.Or one side is ‘’l’he Good Shepherd” and with it “Ruth” the gleaner. On the other side is the sermon “Consider the Lilies" and next to it the warrior who has been “Faithful Unto Death” receiving the crown. All the window sashes were built in the factory of the Municipal Service Corporation.A time switch is being installed so that they may preach their message nightly to all who pass along the highway.‘ The auditorium itself has changed beyond recognition. The former straight walls have given way to ones with large pilasters from which the upper walls and ceiling slope to join in a manner suggestive of Gothic vaulting. The ceiling itself has been lowered and the beams of the false trusses have disappeared. The pews are modern in type and are of ash with quartered ouk ends and are set on a varnished hardwood fleor which slopes one-half inch to the foot. All of the woodwork and all of the furniture is of ash or oak interior. The woodwork is the product of the Athelstan Sash and Door Factory. The walls are sand finished and decorated in two shades of buff. One of the very earliest donations to the church was 200 lbs.of Alabastine and this is the material used for the tinting. The pulpit end of the auditorium, however, is where the most amazing changes have been made.A good vestry has been made on each side in space formerly occupied by seats which were used by very few. These will also serve as Sunday School classrooms and are equipped with call bells under control of the S.S.Superintendent.Each vestry has three doors. One gives access to the auditorium, one to the minister's platform and the third at the rear leading into the choir or down to the primary classroom. The former communion rail is gone and the minister's platform, which runs the full width between the vestries, has been moved closer to the seats. The pulpit suite is of quartered oak.It consists of a large pulpit, three pulpit chairs, a communion table with two chairs and two flower stands. Two families combined to give the suite in memory of loved ones. The choir is in three tiers and has been lowered so that the highest tier seats are on the level of the former choir floor. There are permanent seats for 22 and for special occasions this number can be doubled. The outer third of each choir row is set at an angle forward, thus permitting the whole.choir to be under the control of the organist at all times and this shape also gives a better blending of the voices. The organist faces the choir which is placed between the console and the organ. There is a bank of six 3-way switches in a convenient place by which the organist can control nearly all the lights of the auditorium. The choir can be entered from the minister's platform but normally will be entered by stairs on each side which come up from the rear doors of the vestries. The arch over the choir loft has been carried out in Keene cement marked out to represent stone. The Tudor Gothic shape of this arch is repeated in the design of the pulpit furniture, the hymn boards and the vestry doors, The Keene Cement work was done by Mr.Ernest Cunningham, and reflects well upon his tradesmanship, By going down to the rear the primary class room is reached. It is particularly well lighted as two former outside doors have been made into windows. From the primary classroom is a stairway to the basement. On the west side is the kitchen and on the east side the ladies parlor. The latter is considerably larger yet much more cozy and is floored with hardwood. There is a cupboard and cloakroom. The kitchen is larger than formerly and is now all in one room. There are two sinks with an extra tap between and two large cupboards, tables, etc.The rear outside entrance was little used in the old church but by lowering the door and adding a brick porch this is now a good service entrance. The lecture room remains one of the most satisfactory ones we know of.By daylight or artificial light it is quite bright. The woodwork is B.C.fir in natural finish. The ceiling is fire-proof plaster board (Gyproc) and by conforming to the slope of the auditorium floor increases ventilation and reduces the fire hazard which cost us the old church. The library has been enlarged and made much more convenient. The basement, entrance is larger and can be used as a cloak room or as a small class room.Leading from it is a door to the space underneath the tower. This has been floored with cement and makes a large storeroom for equipment.| The painting, tinting and varnishing has been under the care of J.D.Bicknell and has been done with the most meticulous care and with the benefit of his long experience. If there is one outstanding feature of the whole structure it is its strength.Where formerly 8 dry cross walls supported the lower floor there are now six concrete ones.Large concrete bases support the steel columns on which the fifteen inch 1 beams rest to carry the auditorium floor.Reinforced concrete pilasters bonded to the foundation and capped with large inch steel plates receive these transverse “eams and also support the heavy 12 inch steel H.columns which run up inside the brick walls and carry the whole load of the roof. The timber used has been the best quality B.C.fir in large sizes and very closely spaced.Tully Tumber Co.Much of the new brick work is set in cement mortar with iron rods reinforcing at the points of greatest stress.Beauty and strength are in the sanctuary.e This material was supplied by the|= ITR —— ANNEE Tm 22 TO ° Gas Service | for Cooking No Matter Where You Liver HE COLEMAN Stove is a modern McGinnis, a very well known and respected member of that conununitv.Miss McGinnis wax born on May 18th, 18306, the duaup *er of the late Patrick McGinnis and Anne McGlenn, who were two of the eandiest pioneers in the county of Huntingdon, having settled there in 1834, Miss McGinnis received a very come plete education in the district schools of her howe connnunity and also in the private school which was at that time maintained in Huntingdon village.Be ing naturally keen minded, she did not let her acquisition of learning stop upon leaving school but until very recently, when deterred by age, was interested in and acquainted herself with the current affairs of the world, which she took great delight in discussing, After her formal education was completed she hereself taught, first in the Quaker Settlement school, and later at Ormstown, This, her chosen work, she typically und willingly gave up to stay howe and care for her now aged parents, which she did faithfully until their death, 'Fhis was only one of the nndtitude af sacrifices, typical of her generation, which Miss MeGinnis made for others, Due to this trait.and her publie sviritedness, she was, at once, one of the best known, and best beloved women of her community.Displaying an independence of thought and action, unique for her generation, she was a strong force in the establishing of the first Catholic Parish in Hinchinbrooke, and later, when fire destroyed the humble chureh which hard work had built, again showed the dauntless spirit of the pioneer, and worked equally hard for the building of the second and present church, In short, her spirit and soul can best be portrayed by the powerful lines of Wordsworth, A perfeet woman, nobly planned, To warn, to comfort and command.” Due to her extreme age she has been tor some years under the constant and painstaking care of her nephew and his wife, Mr.and Mrs, John McGinnis, who, with Edward MeGinnis of Montreal, Mes.Katie Nolan of Chateaugay,
