in fact the test had to be stopped because the limit of the testing machine had been reached. The tyres for the wheels had also to be specially made and are said to be the largest pneumatic tires in existence.‘The Inflexible” has three Rolls-Royce Condor engines.each of 650 horse power. One of these engines is fitted in the nose of the machine, the other two being slung on either side below the wing.On account of the great size of “The Inflexible” it became necessary for the designers to evolve a type of control which would make it possible for the pilot to manoeuvre the machine without undue strain. This problem was overcome by perfecting a system of special balances which lighten the loads on the pilot's controls, while a Servo Rudder is used, which is operated by the pilot and it in turn actuates the main rudder which steers the plane. As the Servo Rudder itself can be balanced if necessary.it would appear that control surfaces of any size can be operated in aeroplanes.“The Inflexible.” although it may be used as a passenger machine was originally intended as a military plane, to be used either as a giant bomber or troop carrier, As a masterpiece of aeronautical engineering it is a most interesting study and with “The Calcutta Flying Boat” is an achievement of which the British people may well be proud.“The Calcutta” has a wing spread of 93 feet, the width of an ocean cessitate her carrying at least 320 ; Balions of petrol and 30 gallons of | Metal oi giving “The Calcutta” a cruising range of 760 miles.Under average on a little oil stove. There is also in the after end a lavatory and wash room with running water. The storage space for luggage is in the tail of the machine and is fitted with a conditions “The Calcutta” can at- ‘number of ties which are used to hours at a stretch.‘a speed of about 57 miles an hour [and the grace with which this man- joeuvre can be accomplished is one of “Calcutta” type of flring boat.jcutta can attain altitude in spite of her great size and weight is remarkable. She can take off from the sea in 20 seconds and climb at the rate of 750 feet a minute.Under actual test she recently reached an altitude of 10.000 feet in 21 minutes.30 seconds. In the design of the new flying boat primary consideration has been given to the comfort of the pilot for on the long sea routes over which these planes will be operated in the future the task of piloting will be a tiring one.Not only is the cockpit roomy but is laid out in such a way that the pilot is almost completely protected trom the elements. In fact under normal flying conditions a clear view in all directions from he need not wear goggles. There is the pilot's seat, and the controls.all within easy reach.may be manipulated with a minimum of effort. The aim of the designers, has been to provide a machine which would combine absolute comfort for passengers and the widest possible margin of safety. It is because of this principle that three engines have been provided and the entire flying boat.with the exception of a few minor parts, built of duralumin. The use of this metal has resulted in a marked reduction in weight without the sacrifice of strength as compared with other planes of equal carrying capacity. The design of the “boat” is such tain a speed of 126 miles an hour and , can cruise at 100 miles an hour for | She can land at, The rapidity with which the Cal- / fix valises and trunks and to prevent their shifting while the plane is in flight. As its name implies “The Calcutta” ts at once an aeroplane and a boat.Because she st h Jof the outstanding characteristics of | nas Lo be moored on the water her regular equipment includes anchors, tow lines and other gear common to ordinary boats of similar sibe. All of this is stowed in the nose of the machine under a removable hatch.Like other modern passenger carrying aeroplanes “The Calcutta” is equipped with the very latest wireless installation for the reception and dispatch of messages.By means of a wireless telephone the pilot may converse with his aerodrome or other pilots in the air up to a distance of 20 miles. In addition to the telephone equipment there is the usual transmitting set for the dispatch of morse messages. The giant metal monoplane, “The Inflexible”, is scarcely less interesting than “The Calcutta.” Its wing spread is more than double the total length of the flying boat which is made necessary because ‘of the fact that there is only one lifting surface instead of two.CANADIAN FISHERIES IN 1928 A number of factors affecting the fishing industry of Canada have worked together to make 1928 the most generally profitable year since the war.Good weather during the season, heavy runs of fish, and pro- firable marketing conditions due to short catches elsewhere produced a total yield estimated at $50.000,000.The industry represents a capital investment of over $50.000.000, and gives THE HUNTINGDON GLEANER ATHENS REJUVENATED.A new city has grown up around | who gains a first sight of it from the Hill of the Temples is especially | impressed by the whiteness of the | city on which he looks down, writes | Emil Ludwig.in “On Mediterranean Shores.” He notes the absence of three things ern man: no factory chimneys, and scarcely a tower. Those who build the new city were sedulous to avoid anything that would interfere with the beauty | of years ago .Now Athens blooms anew.precious vessel; seaworthy, completely watertight and sturdy enough to stand the buffeting of moderately heavy seas. The engines of “The Calcutta’ are air cooled as it has been found that the absence of radiators and water jackets and joints, which occasionally leak through vibration removes one of the most fruitful causes of trouble. So accessible are the engines that minor adjustments may be carried out while the plane is in flight thousands of feet above the sea.Petrol is carried in two tanks in the upper wing and is fed to the engines by gravity. The cocks are arrange?so the pilot may direct the fllow of gas from either tank. The engines are fitted with self starters which are used for generating electricity and lighting the cabin when the plane is at rest. The dynamos may also be used to work a bilge pump if required. Two pilots sit side by side in the nose of the machine.Dual controls are provided so that the pilot may be relieved if necessary and in case of failure in any of the primary controls. The assistant pilot, who combines the duties of navigator and wireless operator has a private compartment immediately aft of the cockpit and separated from it by a roll blind. This compartment houses all the wireless equipment and a nav- ligating table with drawers for charts and maps.Lighting is provided by day by portholes in the side of the compartment and at night by a flood light.Immediately behind this small private “office” is the passenger compartment.17 feet long and 6!.feet wide. The ceiling is 6 feet 3 inches above the floor affording ample headroom for everyone. The chairs for passengers are arranged in three's across the compartment, two on one side and the third on the other, with an aisle between.Racks for coats and light luggage are found on either side near the ceiling. The sides of the compartment are of plate glass with movable panels which may be opened for additional ventilation. In Curbs Strains For horses suffering from inflamed, swollen joints, sprains, bruises, soft bunches, boils, poll ol evil, quittor, fistula and infected sores, use | Absorbine. It is economical and effective, will not buister or remove hair, and the horse can be worked during treatment.Booklet on the horse sent free.$2.50 per bottle at your druggist’s or general merchant's, 71 W.F.Youmg, Inc., Lyman Bldg.Montreal - Cn Cd EE ; and under authorizations from the Governments of the Dominien of Cunada and the Province of Quebec, water power rights on the St Lawrence River about twenty-five miles above the City of llontreal.lis power house, in which 1t 15 proposed to instal equipment capable c! producing 500.000 horse power.will be west of the Town of Beauharnois.on Lake St.Louis.This vevelopment involves the construction of a canal approximately fifteen miles in length to the south of the River St.Lawrence, running from Lake St.Francis to Lake St.Louis.Complying with the conditions imposed by the Do- muinion Government the canal has been designed so that if the St.Lawrence Deep Waterways prosect is proceeded with, the canal can be used jointly for navigationand power purposes.Inaddition to the above water power rights the Beauharnois Light.Heat and Power Company has entered into à contract with Montreal Cotton Company providing for the acquisition of the latter's rights to divert water for power purposes from the St.Lawrence River at Lake St.Francis In the opinion of the Company's engineers, the water available from the above sources when diverted through the canal will generate 500.000 horse power.equivalent to 7.500.000 kilowatt hours per day Between Lake St.Francis and Lake St.Louis the St.Lawrence River drops eighty-three feet in a series of rapids.making this section of the River one of the most important water power sites in Canada, being capable of developing about 2,000.000 horse power. The average low water flow of the River through this section 1s approximately 220.000 cubic feet per second.Of this flow approximately 120.000 cubic feet per second is presently allotted to power developments, which amount includes the quantity allocated to the Beauharnois Light, Heat and Power Company.lt is estimated that the unallocated balance of about 100,000 cubic feet per second.if passed through the Company's canal would permit installation of approximately 1,000,000 additional horse power. The Company's proposed development.in the opinion of its engineers.1s the most efficient method of utilizing the entire drop in this section of the River. In view of the above, provision 1s made in the plans and considerable work 1s now being done with a view to installing further units if additional water becomes available. After the completion of the present 500.000 horse power installation itis estimated that further units can be installed at an average cost of less than $65 per horse power. The present plans contemplate that 200,000 horse power will be available by October |, 1932, at which time the Company will commence delivering the first blocks of power under contracts already entered into, and that the total of 500,000 horse power will be available by October |, 1935.ENGINEERING The plans and estimates of the present development have been prepared or approved by the following engineers on behalf of Beau- harnois Light, Heat and Power Company: Frederick Baylis 550,000,000) as its Directors may from Lime to time consider sufficient, together with the monies made available to 1t from the proceeds of the Collateral Trust Bonds.to complete the installation of five hundred thousand (500.000) horse power. The above-mentioned bonds, debentures or other securities will not constitute a closed issue and the Company will be permitted to issue further securities as more specifically set out below.POWER CONTRACTS Beauharnois Light.Heat and Power Company has entered into contracts extending beyond the maturity of these Bonds with the Hydro-Electric Power Commission of Ontario for the sale of 250.000 horse power and with Montreal Light, Heat & Power Conso.1dated for the sale of 150,000 horse power. The first blocks of power under these contracts are to be taken on October |.1932, with increasing quantities each year, the full amount to be taken at the end of five years. From past experience it is anticipatgd that.owing to the rapidly increasing demand for power, the entire amount of power deliverable under the above contracts will be required well before the end of the five-year period. These two contracts dispose of 400.000 horse power of the 500,000 horse power now being installed, and it is expected that the balance of available power will be under contract before the plant is completed. The construction plans for the development have been prepared with a view to making available in the most econorn:cal manner the amount of power estimated to be required each year.EARNINGS lt is estimated by the engineers of Beauharnois Light, Heat and Power Company that upon the sale and delivery of the 500.000 horse power now being installed the consolidated annual earnings of Beauharnois Power Corporation Limited and its subsidiary companies (after providing for al' operating expenses) available for interest and sinking fund cn the First Mortgage Bonds of Beauharnois Light, Heat and Power Company and on these Collateral Trust Bonds will amount to over.12 21100 La LL aa ana a $6,200,000 It is estimated that annual interest and sinking fund requirements on the securities of Beauharnois Light Heat and Power Company expected to be issued in connection with completion of the 500,000 horse power, now being installed, willbe.$2,750,000 Balance available ior annual interest and sinking fund on these Collateral Trust Bonds.$3.450.000 Annual interest and sinking fund requirements on these Collateral Trust Bonds.$1,950.000 The revenue from the sale and delivery of 400,000 horse power now contracted for by the fiydro-Electric Power Commission of Ontario and Montreal Light, Heat & Power Consolidated, will be more than sufficient to pay all eatimated operating expenses of Beauharnois Light, Heat and Power Company, interest and sinking fund on the First Mortgage Bonds of the Company expected to be issued in connection with the Installation of 500,000 horac power as set out above, and interest and sinking fund on these Collateral Trust Bonds.SECURITY The Collateral Trust Bonds are to be secured by a first fixed and specific charge on all the shares at any time outstanding of Beau- harnois Light, Heat and Power Company, Beauharnois Construction Company, Beauharnois Land Company and Beauharnois Transmission Company, on any shares of any other corporation acquired with the proceeds of the Collateral Trust Bonds, and on the principal of all indebtedness in favour of the Corporation arising from the application of the proceeds of the bonds, and also by a first floating charge on the undertaking, property and assets, present and Limited: future of the Corporation. The first fixed and specific charge on the shares of such companies is not to prevent the issue by any of such companies of bonds.debentures or other securities or other evidences of indebtedness, but the issue of such bonds.debentures or other securities by Beauharnois Light.Heat and Power Company is to be permitted only: (a) to such How long?GIVE THE BREEDERS A REST BEFORE THE HATCHING SEASON If you expect to hatch from your own eggs, this is the time to think about mating up of the breeding pen.Select the birds which will most likely make up the breeding pen and put them in a house by themselves. They need a good long rest before the hatching season.Suceess in breeding depends tn a very large extent upon the care and rest you give the birds. The breeding pen should be dry and clean.Whenever the litter becomes wet or broken up, take it out and replace it with dry material.Give the birds plenty of room and plentv of fresh air.Proper feeding likewise plays an important part in the care of breeders.Feed breeding stock in much the same manner as you would a laying flock. Many a poultryman makes the mistake of feeding too much grain to breeders. They need a mash all through the rest period.During the rest period the best results will be secured by feeding a good growing mash or half growing mash and half egg mash. The object in giving breeders a rest is to give them a chance to build up the broken-down tissues, which is similar to growing or fleshing a pullet.Feed green feed freely.Be careful not to feed any decayed green stuff as it interferes with digestion and consequently reduces the hatching quality of the eggs.If you do not have green stuff, flush the birds occasionally with blackstrap molasses.Use a pint of molasses to sixteen quarts of water.Breeders may be changed back to straight egg mash after they have completed the molt and are back in good flesh.Feed the mash dry.as a wet mash will tend to cut down the hatches.Use a high quality egg mash. You can then go about your poultry breeding operations.secure in the knowledge that your birds will produce good hatching eggs. The hatching quality of eggs 1s one of the best tests of the quality of a feed that can be made.A mash which makes the birds lay, keeps them in good flesh, produces good hatching eggs and chicks that live, is worth every cent you have to pay for it.— “But surely.” said the haughty passenger, “if I pay fare for my dog he will be treated the same as other passengers and be, allowed to occupy a seat?” “Of course.madam.” the guard replied politely, “provided he does not put his feet on it.” SEAL AND MUSKRAT FUR COATS The finest of Coats, well made.beautifully lined ' and moderately priced.N.A.Ostiguy “The Furrier,” Valleyfield, - - - Que.TURKISH COFFEE In mid-afternoon when you are feeling tired or when guests drop in unexpectedly.try serving Turkish. It is delicious and invigorating and in addition it has the advantage of being something of a novelty.Genuine Turkish coffee is always freshly roasted for the occasion and ground as fine as face powder in a quaint brass mill that is part of the equipment of every Moslem household. But, since you do not have the mill, you can substitute pulverized coffee which your grocer will grind for you. While the water is boiling—a demi tasse full for each person—measure a heaping teaspoon of coffee per cup and mix it with an equal!
