Although the morning of July 1st broke dull and threatening and even rained at times, the forty-seventh Farmer's Picnic took place as usual in Mason Greig's grove at Cairnside, with a larger attendance than there has been for years. The ball games were a great drawing card to the young people, while the other sports were not neglected either.A half hour only was allowed for speeches and the games were called off for that length of time to give the people a chance to hear the addresses.President Mason Greig called on Prof.A.R.Ness of Macdonald College for the first speech. He first expressed his regret that he was the only college representative present this year.Dr.Lattimer being prevented due to a serious illness. His main theme was that of building for the future of Canada—for the children of today. He reminded us how the Fathers of Confederation sixty-six years ago—had the future of Canada in mind and how they built on that foundation. He urged on the parents of today to see to it that Canada was made a safe home for them, making good investments in education, etc.He also expressed the hope that more young men from this district would attend MacDonald College.Dr.Moore, our member to Ottawa, was next called on.He told us of his deep interest in agriculture and of his love for young people, saying that he had not lost faith in them but was convinced they were capable of being just as loyal and just as faithful in what they undertook to do as any previous generation. He also spoke of conditions as they are today.Dr.Moore made a presentation to Mr.Alex.Steele, Jr.of a certificate in recognition of lvis saving from drowning of Mr.David Forrester.Rev.A.B.B.Moore of Howick United Church was next called on.He drew attention to the natural wealth of Canada, her mines, her grain, her forests, her fisheries and her electrical power—everything necessary to make a people rich and yet Canada was with a million men out of work.people starving and yet her granaries bursting with grain. He finished with a plea for unselfish service to our country, to serve not for what I can get but what can I give—to make a commonwealth of nations, as a nation determined to give service and not to amass wealth. The Secretary, Mr.D.T.Ness, was next on the list.He read letters of regret from Hon.Mr.Mercier, Mr.Martin Fisher and Mr.Robt.Brodie of Montreal. The Stormont, Dundas and Glen- garry Highland pipe band which played a great many times and delighted everyone with their music. There were five of them.Game Results
