for silence. He leaned closer to her and whispered, “Don't open that door while I'm here.” She would have said something, but he darted away from her on swiftly silent feet.He opened the door of her closet, stepped inside and pulled the door shut after him.Knuckles sounded on the panels of the door.Millicent Graves started once more tcward the door to open it, then indignation got the better of her.She raised her voice so that it was perfectly audible to the person outside of the door and said, “I don't think I care to receive any more visitors tonight.Norman Happ is here and is just leaving.” At the sound of her words Happ emerged from the closet. His face was a dull red.“What did you do that for?" he asked in a mumbling, surly voice.“Because,” she told him.“I've done nothing to be ashamed of and I don't intend to be put in an ,embarrassing position.” She turned the knob and opened the door.Jarvis Happ stood on the threshold.Gravely he and stood before her mirror applying creams to her face, she ran over the events of the day in her mind.Suddenly she realized that the interruptions had prevented her from looking over the books which Mr.Gentry had given her in the suitcase. Her eyes turned toward the suitcase. It was brown, with brass mountings. There were two straps which entire- lv surrounded the suitcase. It had been made to stand hard usage, and she noticed casually that one of the corners had been badly dented so that the edge of the brass reinforcement presented a jagged appearance. She frowned as she thought how easy it would be to snag a stocking on that bit of brass, and determined she would have it fixed. Why not ask the chauffeur to fix it?That would be a good way to lay the foundation for her campaign. She left the stool in front of her dressing table, took a few steps toward the suitcase, then realized she was too tired to bother with books. It had been a hard day.But she did want to take a look at those books before she retired, just to see what they looked like and how they had been kept. She dropped into the overstuffed chair, placed her finger-tips at the back of her neck and gently kneaded the the creation of deficit on deficit.‘The Hon.Fernand Rinfret assured the meeting that the Liberal party fully ratified their choice of candidate in the new constituency and presaged success for him.He drew the laughter of the crowd referring to the Bennett Government's reluctance to go to the polls when he observed that no one with a toothache was in a hurry to go to the dentist. At the rate the election postponements were bt ng made, they might expect to be ir power by New Year.Seldom had He seen such unanimity at a convention, he continued, paying tribute to Mr.Raymond.He recalled the part the candidate had played in the Bank of Canada debates and the budget discussions, when it was obvious he was a capable and competent member who was at home in economic questions.Dealing with the general policy of the Liberal party the speaker said they had been reproached in certain quarters for saying the same thing over again. But what was true yesterday is still true today, and in this regard unemployment was still the greatest problem the country faced. In 1930 Bennett had promised to solve it or resign, but it was obvious he held to the French proverb which says “Partir c'est mourir un peu.” “Bennett has been deaf to the cries of the last five years,” went on Mr.“In 1930 he reproached us with the unemployed but in 1935 he would not allow the same men to approach Ottawa and even called out the R.C.M.P.Unemployment has grown steadily in these years until today it is over 1,000.000.Is it not time the Bennett administration abandoned its place to others? It is not likely that a man who cannot even fix the election date can reduce unemployment.” Dealing with the reforms in unemployment administration that the Liberal party would undertake, Mr.Rinfret said that one of the greatest difficulties in the handling of relief was the waste of time between far- distant cities and Ottawa.the representatives uf the provincial governments and the Mr.Rinfret.“Canada has lost the confidence and goodwill of other countries.Only the other day Japan imposed stringest tariffs against us and Bennett took retaliatory action.Bennett was supposed treaty opened the market for Canadian wheat in exchange for French wines. But today France is destroying her own wheat surplus and we in Canada cannot buy food, let alone French wines. When Bennett established his brother-in-law in Washington a reciprocal treaty was expected to follow, but there is still no treaty.” Turning to the situation created by the entry of new groups into the political field, Mr.Rinfret warned his hearers not to be misled by new parties fostered by discontent and personal ambition.Hinting at a liaison between the Stevens party and the Conservatives, he suggested that the Genuine Stevens group was ashamed of its real relations and disguised itself under a new name.Concluding, he pointed to the Liberal success that had attended provincial elections and to the number of Liberal-governed provinces ready to co-operate with the new Federal Government.En Wednesday, August 14th, 1935 The Hon.Honoré Mercier also congratulated the candidate in a brief address, expressing his conviction that the Liberal party would sweep the polls.Paul Mercier, M.P., for St.Henri, traced Mr.Stevens’ career and declared there was no Stevens party, only a leader
