DT THE BUNTINGDON GLEANER, WEDNESDAY, JULY 22nd.1953 Editorial Notes.ESPITE all attempts to persuade auto- D mobile drivers to cut down accidents, highway fatalities have increased. No doubt the warnings have been heeded by some and these may have helped to avoid a few accidents, but generally there appears no hint that the warnings have been heard. The daily newspapers as well as the weeklies tell their stories of week-end accident tolls as well as those through the week.At this time of the year when many persons are vacation bound, the traffic becomes much more dense on all highways and through cities and towns. On Saturday morning as an instance, traffic through the Town of Huntingdon on Highway No.4 was particularly hea in both directions.Cars were going throug to the States as there was a large convention of Jehovahs Witnesses being held somewhere in N.Y.State.parently on their way to Valleyfield for the Regatta which was held there over the week-end., Thus there was dn almbdst continuous stream of cars in both directions, during the morning hours. This sort of thing i ing on along all highways and the accident “potential ie considerably raised on account of it.is going on if accidents are to be avoided. On the other hand they were coming from the States and ap- It is doubly necessary to use caution and to take more heed of what Accidents Still Increasing Not all the accidents are due to automobiles and the highway. The hot weather has been the cause of people turning to lakes and rivers with the idea of cooling -off in the waters. For several reasons there have been deaths by drowning which with proper precaution could have Been avoided.People stay too long in the water, go into the water too quickly after meals, take too much sun treatment and many other things harmful for them.Commonsense in all these things is needed and much of the misery will be avoided. That is all any of us need to use — is commonsense — in all things we do.Durin the hot days it is better to take it easy and not over exert ourselves and this applies to play as well as work. When driving a car commonsense used in the handling will help to prevent accidents.Only when people take precautions against accidents will there be any appreciable decline.Too much assurance cannot be placed on the other person, it is up to all to take the precautions. The precautions you take may avoid the accident that the other fellow would make.Often this has proved true, the other fellow has taken the chance and you give wa to him to avoid the consequences. If bot take chances the accident will happen when it possibly could have been avoided.Better to give the other fellow the benefit of the doubt than to place yourself in jeopardy. Is War’s End Any Nearer?OU have probably thrown a stone into a river or pool, and watched the rings that gradually widened from the point at which the stone entered the water. They started from a small one and quickly became larger until going out of sight. The truce talks in Korea remind us very much of that. They start off on a small note and our hopes are raised by degrees into a crescendo that has promise of the war coming to-an end, Then the hopes trail off into the mists and we find the truce is just as far off.Time and time again this has happened that today we are all inclined to think of a truce as an impossibility. The latest news is that the Reds have given word they are willing to sign, but, then again there are doubts as to whether other things may prevent them at the last minute. One thing that has puzzled us throughout this period of truce negotiation is, who is seeking the truce? We were of the opinion that the United Nations’ forces flung out the chance to the Reds to seek a truce and that the Reds grasped at the opportunity. It would now appear that the Reds are granting the United Nations a truce. It is so mixed up that we do not believe the negotiators themselves know what is what Life and BEFORE a man sets out on his holidays, he gives some thought to what they will cost him.He measures the cost in money.Aud, on the occasion of every national holiday, the nation too reckons to pay a price, but this time a price measured jn death and injury, in useful lives dissipated and senseless carnage.Perhaps the most terrible aspect of this is that it is being taken for granted. The size and frequency of the deathrolls — the very things which should spur to action — are so great that they have a numbing influence and produce despair rather than determination. In all branches of our lives death and danger surround us, but nowhere else do people accept that danger with such hopeless gloom.Soldiers, sailors and airmen are by no means so fatalistic about their own safety and even a householder does everything he can think of to prevent accidents happening to his wife and children. It is this same automatic acceptance of death on the roads as something that cannot he prevented which is the cause of many of those deaths. The danger to a man working with machinery is quite as great basically a5 to a man driving a car.But industry tackles the problem in a very different spirit.Safety programs encompass everything from education of employees to awareness of possible danger, through posters, articles, competitions and campaigns to encourage men and women to keep things safe for themselves and their fellows, to automatic guards which make faulty operation of machinery practically impossible.Injury and death are Certainly not accepted in industry as a price which must be paid. The Department of Labour has recently — or who is who.Under terms of a truce.usually one side of the other has gained the upper hand, but is willing to grant a truce and the terms of the agreement are drawn up to grant a suspension of operations It is not an actual peace pact and fighting may break out again until an actual peace agreement has been reached. But under such circumstances has the United Nations won its objective? If the United Nations has not won its objective, then it has not accomplished its mission in Korea. There will be no guarantee that aggression will be stopped and continual policing will have to be maintained.A few davs ago it looked as the United Nations side had adopted a “get tough attitude,” but apparently this was just a puft of wind as the old appeasement theme came back into the picture almost immediately.Meantime the Reds took the opportunity to throw new forces against the U.N.lines and forced them back several miles to a new line.If that is carried on for long they will be back where they started and there will still be no truce. The terms of the truce in so far as the Reds are concerned have been broken many times and we have patiently bore the brunt while the Reds have laughed in our faces.Honor means nothing to them — so why show them any favors?Death issued facts which show just how seriously industry is tackling the problem of safety.Of 6.670 plants which took part in a survey, 5.763 reported that they had safety or health facilities of one kind or another and these plants employed 95 percent of the total workers.More than 63 percent of all the workers were employed in plants there were employees trained in first aid, more than 30 percent in plants where there were full-time nurses and more than 15 percent in plants where there were plant doctors. On the side of prevention, roughly 46 percent of the workers were employed in establishments having joint worker-supervisor safety committees and 35 percent in establishments with trained safety engineers.Allow for the fact that the absence of a reply to such a survey is marked down as indicating a plant which has no facilities, which may not be the case at all, and bear in mind that small companies could not possibly afford nor require the same quantity of facilities as big companies, and the record of industry's battle for the safety of its workers becomes very evident indeed. In the highly industrialized province of Ontario in 1952, there were not nearly half as many fatal casualties in the factory as there were on the roads. There were only slightly more than half as many as there were in the home and there were considerably less than there were through the combined causes of drowning and fire.If some of this spirit of safety which exists in the factory could be transplanted to the verges of our highways, perhaps our holidays would once again the days of celebration for all instead of being, as they have become for so many, days of suffering and anxiety.— From “Industry.Although every ution will be tak.verte avoid error, The Gleaner accopts ad- ota ang In its columns to the Editor Ormstown, July 15, 1953 } The Editor, | Huntingdon Gleaner, Dear Sir:— The annual trek of Montreal people to the country is now at its | peak, with a consequent aggrava- ‘tion of the surplus milk situation.‘It is true, unfortunately, that we ‘are not getting returns equal to last year” but the same may be said of other things, such as beef and veal. One of my neighbours was complaining bitterly to the truck driver about the amount he had received for 80 cans of surplus, in April He felt that the Producers’ Assn was a “racket.” How foolish can we farmers be?Many of us ‘ignore the fact that every branch of the dairy industry texcept the fluid milk trade), is dependent on an export market, and with the US.market closed by decree, and the British-European market tied up by the sterling- dollar situation, how can we expect to equal last year’s returns? This applies to our own Producer plant or any other processing plant.Just for comparison, here are the April figurés for some of these plants, on the basis of 3.5 test.i J.J.Joubert, (Nicolet plant) $2.60 per 100 lbs.: ipo Tarleville plant, $2.41'% per 100 Rouville plant, $2.48': per 100 Ibs.pTnbY Cooperative, $2.50 per 100 S Montreal Producers, $2.62!.per 100 lbs. These figures would indicate that our plant is doing as well as any other under very difficult conditions. The Federal government is supporting the cheese market to the tune of 6 cents per lb, otherwise the situation would be much worse. They have also bought up ten million pounds of powdered milk, and are being asked to handle 5 millions more.We may have to take a loss on some of these commodities which must find an export outlet, but there are many countries in need of them, who, on account of exchange problems simply cannot buy them.Any movement «of these surplus products must of necessity be han- |dlea at the government level. The US.government has offered East Germany 15 millions in surplus dairy products, which is a cause of great embarrassment to the Soviets.Fluid milk, unlike these other dairy products is sold to our own fellow citizens, who have never been more prosperous.Organized labour made wage gains of 800 millions in 1952, and business reached new levels in profits and volume. We farmers only wish to share in this prosperity.Nothing prevents us achieving this goal except our own lack of appreciation of the power of collective action.Instead of defending our organizations, too many of us stand ready to tear them to pieces. They talk of low test at the Producers, but when asked to examine their statements for the full year, and average them, they fail to produce the evidence. My own average test for 1951-1952 was almost exactly one point, Of 1/10 of 1% lower at the Producers than it was at the dairy.Against this loss of 1/10 of 1% I credit the surplus plant with saving me hundreds of dollars, by stabilizing the fluid milk market.Any reasonably thoughtful farmer must realize that had the 5 to 6000 cans of surplus handled daily at our plant, found its way through the ordinary channels into the Distributors hands, that it would be potential dynamite. The market would have been smashed in a very few weeks.Instead, we have been able to hold the price line intact, which is only just and fair, as our cost of production has not declined.Continuance of this state of affairs depends on us standing together, and keeping firm control of our surplus until the American market can again take our dairy people.uneconomic in the Ste.Agathe, St.area of the Laurentians will have a heyday this Fall enjoying pheasant shooting according to recent reports from the Ministry of Games and Fisheries of the Province. The Dept.officials this week are releasing thousands of pheasants weighing about 2 lbs.each in the above area after an extensive study of the district by the Dept.of Fish and Game and after an education campaign among the local population on pheasant conservation. The decision to make the release this year was prompted by the success accorded “the program last year when several thousands were set free on Ile aux Coudres near Baie St.Paul on Ile d'Orleans near Quebec City. After making a survey it was found that the birds had survived the hunting season allowed and also the severe winter conditions.By the time of the hunting season Sept.19 to Oct.4 inclusive it is expected the birds will weigh about four pounds.Hunters are to be allowed to shoot both cock and hen alike. The bag limit is 3 birds a day and not more during the season. The birds are bred and raised at the Provincial Parks at Mount Or- ford in the Eastern Townships, and show a mark of progress toward making the Province popular for tourists and sportsmen during hunting season.Ormstown ORMSTOWN — Miss Shirley For- (with Mrs.Albert Ness.Birthday Party On Saturday, Mrs.Percy McCaig (and Mrs.Neil McCaig entertained the disposal of the Mayor, after which it will be made available to some adult who has need of same.-0- The Chateauguay River almost claimed another victim early Saturday evening. It was approximately 7.30 on Saturday when a family group, unknown in the district, stopped near the home of Mrs.E.R.Thompson on Route 4, near Trout River, A small boy, about six years old, unaware of the depth of the river and unable to swim, jumped a dear brother and uncle, P.O.H.| into the water. His parents who were nearby were not able to swim, and they were forced to stand helplessly by as he struggled in the water.Mrs.Alex.Thompson, daugh- ter-in-law of Mrs.E.R.Thompson, saw the danger and being well- acquainted with the water, was able to rescue the boy.Because of the short time he was in the water, and the quick rescue, he did not require artificial respiration. He was badly frightened by his experience, This near-tragedy serves as a warning to others who unthinkingly jump into unfamiliar bathing grounds.Mrs.Thompson is to be congratulated on her quick-thinking at the time of danger. As a reminder in cases of drowning and similar accidents requiring artificial respiration, there is an inhalator available at the Fire Station in Huntingdon for publc service anywhere in Huntingdon County.-0- Howard Kelly, son of Mrs.R.L.Kelly, has received notice that he has obtained honor standing in all Queen Elizabeth has inherited some unusual rights — including that of having the tails of all whales caught in British waters.A recently published book, “God Save the Queen.” says that technically it is the King of England who has the right to all British caught whales. However, the Queen is entitled to the tails for use as corset bones. The author, Allan Michie, says that “by ancient law” the Queen owns all sturgeons caught in British waters — tails and all.But he points out that catching a British sturgeon is a ‘comparatively rare event.” He also writes that, as Queen, Elizabeth will become mistress of 600 swans that have special permission to Inhabit the River Thames. Also, no matter what crime she may commit, even murder, she may refuse to be tried in any regular law court. The book lists many strange privileges that Elizabeth inherits from the days of feudal lords. For example, the Crown has technical ownership of several noblemen's estates. And as the new landlord, Queen Elizabeth is entitled to some rather strange — if non-negotiable — rent payments. She will get a tiny French flag as the annual rent for Strathfield- saye, the Hampshire estate of the Duke of Wellington. That is little enough rent for a property that cost England £263,000 when given to the first Duke of Wellington for having defeated Napoleon at Waterloo. The Queen will get another small flag once a year from the Duke of Marlborough for his family home, Blenheim Palace. This largest private house in England was the birthplace of Prime Minister Churchill and is valued at $2,000,000.Should Queen Elizabeth enter Savernake Forest, the only privately owned forest in England, she will be greeted by a blast on a twelfth century silver-and-ivory horn. That is the rent that must be paid her by the owner of the forest, the Marquis of Ailesbury.Three blasts on a bugle is the traditional rent the Queen will receive from the estate owned by Scottish Baron Sir George Clarke.Should Elizabeth cross the English Channel and fear seasickness, she must be accompanied by the owner of a magnificent manor house in Kent called Archer's Court. He pays his rent by sailing with the Queen and having a silver bowl at hand in case of rough seas.Another custom Queen Elizabeth may preserve is that no visitor wears gloves in the monarch's presence. This taboo dates from the days when weapons or [ings containing polson were concealed inside gloves.Virtually all royal visitors also are required to remove their hats. However, two nobles, the Lords Kingsale and Forrester, are allowed to keep their hats on in recognition of special favors they did for the Crown in years past.PRIVATE PROPERTY EDMONTON, (CP)—Mrs.George Ninian retailer displays the farmer's vegetables in a most attractive manner so that homemakers will buy.Early summer beets are a sort of two-in-one vegetable for if the beets are young enough, the tender beet tops may be cooked separately and served as a green.Be sure to buy a bunch or two of beets the next time you shop.Choose beets that are smooth and free from blemishes.Watch to see that they are not rough or that they do not have deep cracks. If the beet tops are to be used, be sure that they are fresh, tender and clean. The home economists of the Consumer Section, Canada Department of Agriculture suggest that to retain that [|lovely red colour in cooked beets, are appearing on Canadian dinner always cook them with the skin, the root and about two inches of the stem on.Once you have cooked the beets, you can serve them hot with butter and perhaps a little vinegar or a sweet-sour sauce.Another way to cook beets is to cut them in small dices or in coarse shreds then cook the dices or shreds in a covered saucepan with just enough water to prevent burning.Even before Columbus came to North America, beans were grown and eaten by the Indians. When the white man arrived, he ate these Line With Laughing Gas OTTAWA, (CP) — They're using dentists’ laughing gas at the Dominion Experimental Farm to teach bees their duty.Sounds complicated? It is.Farmers nowadays use bees to potlinate their seed clover and orchard crops, apples, peaches, cherries and so on.They plant a beehive in the field or orchard and the bees in their search for honey carry polled from flower to flower and ensure the production of plenty of clover-seed and of the fruit crops.+ There's a difficulty. It appears that bees have flxed habits.Once they start working on a crop they're quite likely to continue doing so even though another and more attractive one appears right under their noses., Thus, even if the hive is set in the middle of a cherry orchard in full bloom, the ornery insects are quite likely to continue to fly miles to a patch of wild flowers they spotted earlier, This is where the laughing gas Did you know that.i a OVER 500 YEARS A60 GIRS 1s sa0T0 HAVE PROPHESIED: CARRIAGES
