If you have actually lost the desire for solid food, then be sure to drink cool drinks that are not only thirst- quenchers but are also wholesome foods. The home economists of the Consumer Section, Canada Department of Agriculture point out that cold drinks can fulfil a two-fold purpose. They can be refreshing and at the same time very nourishing.Does your family like egg nogs or do they think of them as a food for invalids?A plain egg nog made of milk, egg and flavouring can be as cool, tempting and satisfying as MAX FACTOR 3 MAKE-UP 3 Smith Pharmacy 28 E.Main St.j MALONE, N.Y.any other drink.A plain egg nog is very good but the flavour may be varied by substituting fruit juice for all or part of the milk and by beating in either a whole egg or the beaten white. If the whole egg is being used, it is best to mix the fruit juice with the beaten yolk and then, just before serving, fold in the beaten white.Raspberry juice is particularly good used in this way and apricot nector or grape juice will give an egg nog a party air.Cool, appetizing and always a favourite with adults is café au lait. This is hot coffee mixed with plenty of hot milk, then chilled and served icy cqld.It is a simple drink, easy to make and just the thing to serve to summer guests. When a scorching day is predicted, a quick drink that is sure to appeal to practically everyone is plain ice- cold milk. The home economists of the Consumer Section, Canada Department of Agriculture remind us that adults and children alike need milk every day. However, in summertime, plain milk, even though icy cold, does not always appeal to everyone.Often just a slight change in the flavour of the milk will remedy the problem. This is a very easy thing to do.Just add a little chocolate or fruit syrup to the cold milk.As a matter of fact, it is a good idea to keep plenty of these syrups 5 AN EMNE A A WEEKLY INFORMATION SERVICE MONTREAL—It's pickling time again .to gather all those good vegetables from your garden or the market .on HEINZ WHITE VINEGAR.Buy it in the gallon jug—it saves yeu up to 2%c on every cup a3 compared with smaller containers. And of course you get more than economy when you buy this .time .and high time to stock up J vinegar made by the folks who made pickles famous! fragile color to maintain, improper laumdering of any white fabric soon will result in discoloration.Despite its well-known washing ease white nylon is no exception.Whenever white nylon garments lose their original gleam and become slightly yellow or grey, laundry methods should be examined.White nylon clothing should be washed frequently in creamy suds and water hot enough to remove dirt thoroughly. If a water softener or a detergent containing one has not been used in an area where the water is hard, then the soap curds: may be responsible for the off- white shade. The rule of washing colored and white garments separately also applies to nylon, as it too tends to pick up dyes readily. As nylon is strong even when wet, clothing can be washed vigorously when necessary, Nylon garments can be put in the washing machine provided seams and trimmings are securely stitched and in no danger of {fraying or tearing. To avoid unnecessary wrinkling, squeeze water out by hand instead of using the wringing or spin drier. It 18, of course, wiser to wash sweaters, stockings and socks by hand.Like other white fabrics, nylon garments require thorough rinsing.A single ringing will not remove all soap from shampooed hair, nor is it enough for white nylon. Two rinsings in clear, warm water are considered a minimum.8trong bleaches should be avoided as they will weaken nylon as much as any other fibre. They should be used carefully when necessary, following directions for cotton if none are given for nylon. There are whitening agents compounded to improve the appearance of gar ments that have been worn many times and have become slightly discolored. When .washing tricot shirts and blouses, extra solled collars and cuffs can be rubbed briskly with a cellulose sponge.Ironing can be skipped don Gleaner Inc., Huntingdon.[Y Simple Gadget Helps Farmers W.J.Smythe Has Idea to Operate Milking Machines With Tractor William J.Smythe has come up with a gadget that he claims will help farmers in the district in the event of power failure at milking time. Many farmers in the district with milking machines have been at a disadvantage when power failures have occurred and milking had to be done.Mr.Smythe says that a good number of cows do not like hand milking after being used to the machifies and many farmers find it quite hard when they have to resort to hand milking.Mr.Smythe says that there is no need to milk by hand in the event of power failure and suggests bringing the tractor into use for this twice-daily chore.By means of attachment on the intake manifold of the tractor, Mr.Smythe claims that the milking machines can be made to operate the same as if by electric power. The attachment is composed of the following: “x4 inch nipple; %x% inch reducing bushing and a % inch nipple.By taking out a screw plug in the intake manifold of the tractor, above attachment can be inserted.Use a piece of ordinary %-inch garden hose of sufficient length to attach to the stall cock in the barn.Start up the tractor engine and allow it to run at a speed sufficient to give the right amount of suction, and the milking machine will perform as usual. This particular attachment is suitable for IH.C., Massey-Harris and Frost and Wood tractors. For Ferguson tractors a slight change is necessary and the parts for the attachment would be as follows: two %-inch nipples; %-inch elbow; %x% inch reducing coupling.Attach in a similar manner as above. The above attachments will work on all milking machines except the DeLaval Magnetic type. The cost of the first is about 72 cents while the cost of the latter is about $1.25 and the parts can be obtained at any plumbing establishment. To increase or decrease the amount of suction on the milking machine, simply adjust the speed of the tractor engine until satisfactory.Mr.Smythe claims this will do as good a job at milking as the electric power and save much valuable time and labor in the event of power failure. He also says that the attachment can be used on a Chevrolet car.He warns that the attachment should be taken off the tractor when not in use and replaced when needed.Further particulars can be obtained from Mr.Smythe, who is willing to help fellow farmers in this matter.Several farmers have already tried out the idea and found it quite satisfactory and a great time saver when the power emergency arises. While William J.Smythe is well known locally, this article will no doubt attract attention of farmers from distant points — it is well, therefore, to add that Bill, as he is more commonly called, owns and operates the homestead Smythe farm near Lee's Corners. For a number of years he also successfully operated a milk transport to Montreal before selling this latter concern to J.G.Fraser.His willingness to share his invention that others may benefit is typical of the Smythe family. He is a brother of James F.“Jim” Smythe of Huntingdon Motors Reg’d.Brooklet.Little White Ribboners present time, with a view to raising funds to aid local girls in training as nurses in Montreal Hospitals, Two years ago the Rotary Club decided that as our local hospitals are always in need of registered nurses it would be a good thing if the club would offer encouragement to girls to ‘become r.urses.The scheme is that as a girl enters for training she be given $200., to aid her in buying uniforms, etc. Each month she also receives a $20.cheque from the Rotary Club, and this goes on throughout her three years of training. The scheme calls for the Rotary ‘Club to so aid three girls in training. At the moment two girls are training in Montreal, Miss Welburn ab tHe Royal Victoria Hospital for almost two years, and Miss Tessier one year at the Montreal General.A third girl is expected to start training this fall When the girls graduate as nurses they agree to serve at least two years as Registered Nurses in The Huntingdon County Hospital. To finance this aid to nurses in training, it will cost the Rotary Club $800.a year.; To help meet this expenditure the Rotary Benefit is now in full swing and the general public is invited to acquire tickets. The tickets cost $1.The tickets may be purchased from any one of the Rotarians and many others who are voluntarily lending their assistance in that direction. To further aid the effort, four young ladies of Huntingdon are entering into the spirit of the benefit and will compete as popularity contestants, the tickets counting as votes. The young ladies are the Misses Jeanine Lazure of the Huntingdon Woollen Mills Limited staff; Huguette Beau- din of the Bank of Commerce staff; Carmen Bougie of the Gleaner staff and Therese Leduc of Spinners Limited staff. These young ladies tickets as well as the many others.AUCTION
