attracting pusiness have heen developed over the past few years.Among the most progressive type is the so-called “shopping centre”.A shopping centre can take a number of forms, but the ultimate end is the same.To provide a compact place where the consumer can find practically all the types of merchandise and services he may need and a convenient place to park his car.Such a centre is attractively laid out to command immediate attention, cven from a distance. The stores within the «entre are well lighted, airy or air condi- “joned, goods well displayed.can be of the self-service, or clerk serviced type, hut with good services all around.Either in the centre foreground, or within easy distance, is a large space for parking cars and this is generally a free convenience.Shopping centres are usually off the main thoroughfares so there is no trouble with traffic jams and of course no tickets for illegal or overtime parking, The shopper does his business in freedom from worry in that connection.Naturally there is a great inducement to go to n shopping centre if one is nearbv.or part of a town or city.Evervone knows the difficulty of leaving a car on the street which has restricted parking hours and the consequences of parking overtime. While this system seems unfair, ac.ually it is quite fair for it allows someone else being able to park as the cars move on.It is not always a possibility to have a shopping centre, and in most towns today.parking is a problem.However.there is no reason why enterprising business people cannot devise ways of their own of overcoming these problems. In Huntingdon, for instance, there are still some vacant lots adjacent to Firemen Do OR many years, Huntingdon has been fortunate in not having a really bad fire.In fact not since the Convent and Braith- waite Bros.Store fires, which were very close in happening, have we had a fire in town of large proportions. This “spell” was broken in the early hours of Sunday morning, when an alarm was sounded for a fire in the building owned by the LO.O.F.housing their Lodge Rooms, Ted- stone’s Restaurant and Pollack’s dry goods store.on Chateauguay Street.Fire in this portion of the business section of Chateauguay Street has been a source of fear in case onc would occur. The buildings here are quite old and a number of them are just of frame construction and also quite close together. It has been felt that should a fire occur in this section.it might be hard to control and mean a greal loss in a number of ways.Perhaps conditions were with our firemen in that it was a very cold night and little wind, but we believe under the circumstances thut the firemen did an excellent job by Will Quebec Have Theme are several provinces in Canada which have signed up with the Federal Government Hospital Insurance Scheme and where the plan is now operating. Some others have still to get the plan working even though they have signed up with it.Quebec Province however, is still an unknown quantity. One time there is the feeling that Quebec will accept the plan, then again it seems that it will not.Recently the Hon.Maurice Du- plessis has said that Quebec will not sign with the Federal Government plan. Some Queber hospitals have been preparing against the time that the scheme wiil be adopted in this province and had visions of it coming very soon.Mr.Duplessis has an aversion to the Federal Government helping out in anything to do with Quebec. He explains that the Government is providing adequate measures for hospital care and more accommodation in enlarging some present hospitals and building new ones.If more is required then it will done by a plan drawn up by Quebec. The Federal plan as adopted by some other provinces, does not scem to be the type that the people thought it would be.The plan does not appear to provide for the medical care in the way it was first advocated some few years ago. When mooted in the early stages, the public understood that full Medical services would be accorded under the plan.As it appears today, it is only in the case that hospital treatment is necessary that the plan goes into effect.Mr.Duplessis may not be satisfied with this plan and may perhaps be thinking of a plan for Quebec which will cover the defi- ciences and provide for a greater coverage of the needs, There are many large families in this province who could use full medical the shopping district which could serve as parking lots if properly fixed up.It may mean renting such lots from their present owners, or perhaps purchasing them outright. In any event, once it became Known that such were available, we believe they would hecome an inducement for more shoppers to use Huntingdon os their centre.Over the past few years we have studied what has taken place in nearby towns and have noted the number of parking lots that have been set up.We have also noticed that they are readily occupied and tha! such towns arc getting a steady flow of shoppers. In many instances, the municipal authorities have worked together with th» business neople in providing these parking facilities and signs have been posted on the roads outside of town showing the way to the car parks. In some cases the facilities are entirely free, some are marked off into stalls and there is a parking meter.or someone is posted to collect a small fee per car for a limited or unlimited time.Where a fee is charged.the lot is usually well maintained and orderly parking is directed.Huntingdon has a Merchants Association and it seems that they could meet more often to discuss such things with a view to making improvements which ultimately would benefit their businesses.Anything which benefits their business will benefit Huntingdon as a whole. The Town Council should also help in these matters for as well as administering the town, it is the duty of the members to seek to improve the town.II shopping centres are to be combatted, we must seek to make our trading centres more attractive and provide the facilities whieh are demanded today.Good Job keeping this fire within the bounds of this one building. In fact there are parts of the building which do not seem to have suffered from the fire and the walls are standing.Rolfe and Son Hardware which is quite close, did not suffer damage and this also tends to show the fine job that the firemen did in keeping the fire under control and from spreading. The below zero temperature was another factor which made fighting the fire a hazardous job and an uncomfortable one.It was well on to noon un Sunday before the firemen moved their equipment from the scene and after that would come the cleaning up and drying hoses in readiness for use again. We believe our firemen are deserving of high praise in this connection and that their efforts did much to prevent a more disastrous fire.It was indeed a nice gesture on the part of those who served coffee and sandwiches to the firemen, for this no doubt helped to sustain them against the bitterness of the weather.Congratulations on a job well done.Hospital Insurance?coverage to good advantage as their standard of health is not what it should be to begin with. Therefore much of their medical needs are not so strictly from a hospital standpoint. However, their circumstances are such that they cannot afford to pay for the services and treatment. Some forms of sickness insurance cover all costs, but this form is too high in premiums for such people to afford. It may be intended that the Federal scheme will eventually be made wider in scope and cover the whole field.Individual costs of premiums will have to be kept as low as possible however, or they would be as burdensome as taxation, being deductible as they are and decreasing the take home pay. While Quebec remains out of the plan, the people are at liberty to take out insurance of their own, or not to do so, as they wish.If a plan were to be implemented.then the amount of the premium would be deducted from earnings at the source and thus be compulsory.Mr.Duplessis seems very much opposed to compulsory measures of insurance. For instance he has heen urged to bring in a compulsory automobile insurance legislation, but has refused. His reason is that it would serve no real purpose and perhaps bring hardship on the less wealthy owner of the automobile. On the other hand, Quebec has a high rate of accidents and many people are driving cars, but carry no insurance to cover accidents. But certain measures have been taken to combat this in another way.It may be possible that Mr.Duplessis has in mind to institute measures which give the people of Quebec benefits of hospital treatment through other channels. On the other hand if there are benefits going to other provinces, Quebec as a part of Canada should be able to share in them.“The Gleaner” Members of: Although every precaution will be taken to avoid Roman Catholic school boards asked the Government to provide them revenue sources which* would free them from dependence on discretionary grants. The plea was contained in a brief presented to the Govern- meant by The Federation of Quebec Catholic Schools. It noted few boards have sufficient revenue to meet their needs and keep getting deeper into debt. The province periodically has to wipe out these debts through grants.| This dependence on the Government dulls the sense of responsibility of Board Members and poses a threat to democratic functions of the board.the brief stated. To supply the necessary revenue.the brief -suggested, the province should: crganize a uniform system of property evaluation: levy a tax cn corporations & and firms exploiting natural resources: and levy a two-per-cent tax on sales throughout the | province.Tae brief suggested increased centralization of schools, parti- jcutarly at the secondary level in rural areas, to raise teaching standards and caisse or credit union in a community where there is no bank to: offer chequing services bo its inem- bers, a facility which was not! readily available under the old sys- | tein. The costs of this clearing system : have been rising steadily in recent | years with more people and more machines required to cope with the, ever-increasing volume of cheques and other instruments of payment. That is the one and only reason why the banks have revised clear- | ing charges to all non-banking or- ; ganizations, corporate as well as co-operative.The banks have never been influenced in their actions by, any antagonism toward credit ‘ unions or Caisses populaires. And the banks have never attempted to use (hese charges to damage the co-operative organizations or cut | down their activities.Howick Howick Ladies’ Curbng Club HOWICK — The delayed gates on the Mrs.R.R, Ness Memorial ‘Trophy will be played on February 16-17-18.The weather has been against the Match Committee this year, but regular club games are being played How.There have been three mixed club i bonspiels.Rinks have played on the Coca Cola, the Whitehead and friendly games.Huntingdon vs Beau Chateau played in Howick, on the Tweeds- and were entertained by the the game, muir, Howick Club following Congratulations te Huntingdon, why are winners fn this section.Chateauguay Need Cloth for Dressing Canadian Cancer Sociely, Chu cauguay Group, urgently nceds pads Anyone having old sheets, table linen, pillow cuses, backs of shirts or pieces of cotton, please telephone Mrs.Paul Beauchamp, Chateauguay Heights, OXford 2-6775 or Mrs Gerald Adams, 190 Salaberry Blvd.Chateauguay Basin or send by mail to Mrs.Gordon Boyd, Chatcau- guay Heights. The need is urgent and arrangements for pick up wij be gladly made if necessary.GET Your Home With The Best!
