evening, with all members present except Alderman Picard.A number of bills were passed for payment.A letter was read asking for the opening of Centre Street by the council, a distance of about 600 feet and also of another street between the Leboeuf and Kelly properties of about 300 feet. Both these proposed streets are situated near Henderson Street. The matter was discussed and it was decided that a deed, or bill of sale, be asked for whereby the streets would become the property of the town, béfore proceeding further. It was also decided that should there be a re-occurrence of the dry spell experienced last week, that use of garden hoses would be limited. The consumption of water during that week had been abnormally high and it was attributed to people watering their gardens and lawns. In future, during such dry spells, the use of garden hoses will be limited to one hour per day and preferably during the evening hours, Mr.F.O'Corinor again appeared before the council with regard to poor drainage at his property. He said if something is not done about it, he would refuse to pay his taxes.Council decided to check on the matter to see what relief can be given. The council decided to purchase the lot of land where the old skating rink used to be on King Street, for use as a playground. The price quoted was $1600, payment of $400 to be made now and either another $400 in January 1960 and interest added, or pay off the balance at that time with no interest. It was decided to leave it at those terms, but with the possibility that the balance would be paid off in January.Several |, streets in town are without name signs, so it was decided to order what is required and have them put up as soon as possible. Some members of the Knights of Columbus Soft Ball Team came to the council to ask for a grant for the team.Previously, other members had attended, but were told to wait until Walsh and McGerrigle were op- they had organized.Aldermen | posed to any such the property will be sold for the amount owing. In the case of some others, these will be handed in for collection.Registered letters are to be sent out this week and action will be taken after a carelessness was the indirect cause of a very deep gash in Marshall's left arm when he inadvent- ently fell against it while handling a heavy plece of machinery. The prong that pierced his arm was aps et ss a FEES.a DE Er Ss pr EEE Éditorial Notes A Successful Exhibition E believe we are right in saying that W Ormstown Exhibition was a success in all respects. The weather was such that made conditions ideal for a fair. The rain held off for the most part, even though it was badly needed. But with the fair once over, the countryside was treated to a real downpour during the night of Sunday and over into Monday.A few showers fell on Saturday and Friday evening, but these did not mar the fair or the attendance.» The rain on Sunday and Monday will do much good to growing crops of all kinds and farmers generally should be quite happy the way things have turned out.We understand unofficially, that Friday night was a complete sell-out for seats in the arena and had there been more seating capacity, it could have been sold too.It is also understood that this situation was a sort uf record for the exhibition. The Stock Parade filled the arena on Friday evening to capacity and an overflow of the 4-H Club exhibits had to form a second parude. This pointed to the increased number of exhibits in the cattle classes which were entered in the fair this year. The Poultry sectlon was another department that burst ts seams and overflowed beyond the facilities available, The Exhibition Board is to be congratulated on the improvements made about the grounds which provided a better arrangement for the midway and farm machinery exhibits, There is a little work to be done at the underpass entrance to the parking lot on the inside of the race track, but no doubt this will be looked after before another fair. The Highland Dancing and the Calf Scramble no doubt helped to increase attendance, for here were a couple of items that were more or less new for the exhibition. There is no doubt that they tended to add interest for some of the patrons and it is quite evident that the calf scramble did, for so many people were talking about it and anxious to see it when It took place. All in all every change and every Improvement, contributed to make the success at- vained.Official Opening of St.Lawrence seaway by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth and President Eisenhower OMORROW, Queen Elizabeth and Prince Phillip will arrive in Canada and start their tour which will take them right across Canada and enroute they will participate in the official opening of the St.Lawrence Seaway. On June 24th, they will arrive in Montreal and on June 26th, the official opening ceremonies will take place at St.Lambert.At this time we are not truly aware of the great impact this new seaway is going 10 make on the history of Canada.Already this great undertaking is known all over the world and ships from far off countries are already nayigating its waters.Huntingdon is not in the real immediate vicinity of the seaway course, but it is not far away. However, much of the ceremonial program will be seen close to our Town, as the Queen's Yacht Britannia will sall along the route of the seaway within a few miles of here. The Royal Yacht will also anchor for the night in the bay at Valleyfield and we have been informed a boat will be lowered and the Queen will sall in this around the shores of the bay, so that as many people as possible may see her. This event and others in the Beau- harnois area will be close to home and many citizens should be able to get a good view of the proceedings on June 26th.There is no doubt that after this ceremony hus taken 'place, there will be a settling down to business of development. This development will probably be along the shores of the St.Lawrence and could produce many new projects. At first no doubt, the development will be at those points close to Montreal and Cornwall. As time goes on however, this may stretch even as far as the Huntingdon area and beyond.Manufacturing concerns who will use the seaway in their business, will want to be as close to it as possible.Such development may take many years, but eventually we feel it will.As this development takes place new residential areas will be required and it could quite conceivably be that Hun- tingdon would become such a spot.In that event à much larger business area would be required and thus call for expansion in that direction. This, of course, is taking a long range view of the course of events, but it holds possibilities. Our planners should work with this in mind so as to be ready when the time should come to implement the action. This event is truly an historical one and will go down in history as it is written, The seuway is no mean accomplishment, yet it is the realization of a dream that was talked about and planmed for many years. No doubt there will be many problems to overcome and its true worth to the development of Canada will be watched with anxious eyes with the hope that it will prove the success that is looked for.Summer Perils Y now, most of us have caught the certain symptons of summer. Most winter- weary Canadians show signs of the seasonal malady — the weekend urge to go fishing, to take or plan the holiday trip, and find some sure-fire way to eliminate the dandelions sprouting on the lawn.Although summer is a sort of rejuvenation to most, it has its built-in dangers and one of them centres around one of the season's greatest attractions — swimming and all the sport that bodies of water large or small offer. Each year, the old swimming hole or something akin to it takes its toll of lives.Leaky boats, tipped canoes, the venture into deep water when swimming should be confined to the shallow shorestde, disregard of posted warnings about water safety or the neglect to arm non-swimmers with life belts for boat jaunts all may add up to summer tragedy. As statistics indicate and the water-safe- ty-promoting Red Cross emphasizes, the danger exists as much for adults as for children, and perhaps even more. Most school-age children at least are introduced to water safety measures: many schools offer swimming instruction.——————————— Water Safety Week, June 14-20, bombards the community and schools with posters and pamphlets stressing the importance of safe fun in or on the water. It's the sort of week that must stretch into every summer month and be heeded by everyone as the move to beaches, cottages, lakes and bays gets under way.The Rotary Club of Huntingdon would like to undertake the building of a wading pool, and likewise a swimming pool, but the lack of sufficient funds means such projects will have to be delayed. The Nurse Benefit Sweepstake tickets are presently on sale and what money is subscribed in excess of the Fund requirements for nurses-in-training during the coming year, is to be set aside for the pools. The Chateauguay River water has been tested again this year, and the test reveals that the water has been judged as unsuitable for safe swimming.Boys and girls, adults and parents should take heed to this announcement re the condemned water condition in the Chateauguay River, and at the same time back up the Rotary Club Sweepstake so that two safe pools can be built in Huntingdon at as early a date as subscribed funds will permit.\\W ” ° The Gleaner” rires The Huntingdon Gleaner Inc.ADAM L.SELLAR, President and Editor Authorized as second class matter, Post Office Department, Ottawa want to drive alone and so finally persuaded this writer Lo accompany him.And we weren't disappointed.Maxville Fair is one of Eastem Ontario's oldest Fairs, with Kenyon Agricultural Society as its sponsor.Since we had not been at that Fair in over ten years, when it was a Fall event, we were naturally surprised to see the changes that had been made. Most striking in that respect is an up-to-date nine years old, from Chateauguay Park, was alighting from the school bus on Thursday afternoon on Highway 4 near the Park Development when he was struck by a car.His leg has been broken above the knee and he will be in the Lachine General Hospital for the next four weeks. After that a cast will be necessary and Bobby will be laid up for most of the summer. It is alleged the School Bus driver was at fault in allowing the children to leave the bus on the wrong side of the street, but a little caution on the part of motorists would be appreciated by parents.Schoolmates of Bobby's could help him by remembering to send a get-well card to him during his long stay in the Hospital and don't forget it will be a long summer for Bobby, so drop in and say hello when he returns home.Toastmasters
