impressive Protestant School Municipality Of Chateauguay b Office Of The Secretary-Treasurer June 22nd., 1962 Dear Parents, As a result of Provincial Legislation enacted in February 1960, your School Commission receives no financial assistance from the Government for the operation of the school buses. The rising cost of this operation, coupled with a complete loss of any gov- crnment assistance, has had far-reaching effects on our ability to balance our budget. This Board has À constantly maintained a strong and determined stand EU Le I against the raising of the school ‘tax rate.It seems § most inadvisable now to change this policy if order 10 offset entirely the cost of the school operation. After a complete review of the whole operation, most serious deliberation, as well as a thorough in- {vestigation of practises in other municipalities with à respect to raising revenues for school bus operation, § your School Commission has unanimously agreed to Jassess charges for pupils who choose to travel by i school bus. This assessment is not expected to defray à transportation costs in full but is calculated to hold any necessary increase in the mill rate as low as possible. The amount of the assessment was set at two 4 dollars per month (2.00) per child transported, (ap- 4 proximately 5c per trip), with a maximum of three dollars (3.00) per month for any one family with two J or more children transported.Except for children displaced duc to overcrowded conditions in one elementary school and transferred, therefore, to another, therc will be no exemptions from paying the transportation charge._ The fee rate will be the same for all, regardless of grade level. There will be no change in the minimum radius 4lor which transportation is provided.Tickets for transportation will be sold in each school 1j by the principal during the first three school days of the month on the following schedule only: September 5-7 for Sept.and Oct.— 2 months 4 November school year 1962-63, you are asked to decide now d whether your child will need transportation and thus have space on a school bus reserved for him.Reser- gvations must be made for the full school year (10 { months). We emphasize that in order to secure bus transportation for your child in 1962-63 you must advise us that you elect to have this service under the conditions as outlined above. This applies to all children currently enrolled.Provision will be made for all glicwcomers. We solicit your kind assistance in this matter and we wish to thank you for your continuing cooperation.Yours children were outside before 11 o'clock and for some reason were Kept waiting, ror their P.T.C.bus and driver’ for quite some time but the driver (Mr.Gordon Mercier) when he did arrive with the bus — was just the kind of person to go out with « gang like this! There were 23 Brownies with their Leaders, Mrs.Yates and Mrs.Briggs and Miss shirley O'Brien and 14 Guides with Mrs.f&yr and Mrs.Swartz.(Mrs.Ch the other leader hud to aitfid aWother ‘meeting that day Muriel, #epped; 45’ and helped.) Mrs.Morris , Sheila and suzanne of Valleyfield — all went by bus but somewliere alung the way were Mr.Briggs and Mr.Morris driving their own cars piled full of all sorts of things for a picnics That is — all but the hot dogs — they were safe and cold in Yates' ‘fridge! It wasn't until they were about half wiy to the picnic grounds on the farm of Mr, Andy Lussier at Caza- ville that Dorothy remembered them but the men soun found a store and got some more, This was only one of the many things these two did during the day.The women folk tord me they thought of — und did — so many useful things they could have never done themselves and they and the children were so thankful to them. This also includes the bus driver as he stayed all the time just in case it rained and there would have been no place for the children to shelter if the bus hadn't been hired for all day.IL was lunch time when they got there and soon everyone was eating. After lunch Shirley, who has been “Tinker Bell” for some months, was plens- antly surprised with a small gift from Brownies und leaders.Shirley is a “Graduate” this year and September but she will have quite a remembrance of all her little friends as the autograph book she received was soon signed, Now was time to explore and everyone goon was poking here and there and picking strawberries. Then races were run and prizes won.Dorothy and Mary had a tiny gift for each Brownie and so many of them came and showed me what they had afterwards, they were so pleased. While they had a singsong the men were getting tne hot dogs and drinks ready.A special thank you to the “7-Up” and “Coke” Companies for their donations which were much appreciated. As all good things have to come to an end the gang now had to pick-up and come home.Mr.Mercier made quite a hit with the girls! Canadians Must Tighten Their Belts T is something we expected would come in I some form or other the way things have been going the past few months.Canada’s economy has expanded beyond its possibilities, now thers must be a halt and a reconstruction of values in order to prevent a collapse, real The domestic economy began to fall back in 1956 and 57, when unemployment began to show an increase. This pressure increased as the years went on and now is a factor. Some of this may have been caused by the indiscriminate allowing of imports to this country which were highly competitive. In any case our domestic market was affected with a consequent laying off of many employees in various lines of industry. This had the effect of reducing our domestic buying power and because of reduced sales further layoffs were brought about until unemployment figures reached alarming proportions.hd The incidence of the European Common Market also brought about its repercussions and export sales began to drop.Instead, there should have been an intensification of effort for sales in all markets of the world.Presently such an intensification is being undertaken, but it may be too late.We should push for more sales in more points of the world in order to bolster our ecenomy and bring our factories into full production. The devaluation of the dollar while it could have the effect of increasing foreign sales came at a time when our world position was known to be weakening and therefore did not inspire confidence. We should perhaps change direction for our export sales and turn to the U.S.A.and South American countries. In this the U.S.is in much the same position as ourselves and we cannot look for too much in that direction. However, the South American countries much that has been tapped.may offer never before As this is being written, word has come that there will be a hike in the import duties on a large number of foreign goods entering Canada. This may have the effect of turning business toward our own manufactured goods with a tendency toward greater employment, The Government will curb its spending and it is quite possible that several projects will be postponed and defence spending will be cut.The budget which is based on estimates, may therefore be reduced and the expected deficit will thus be cut down. There will be some disappointments that pro- N the midst of fun, everybody enjoying themselves and having a great time, an accident happened which caused the whole to be changed to sorrow. On Saturday, the annual carnival of the Cha- teauguay Property Owners’ Association was held and it was to be a gala time with the object of raising funds for various community needs. One of the attractions was a ferris wheel and of course all kids delight in a ride on this giant wheel. The wheel was in motion and the riders were enjoying looking out over the Chateauguay area when the chair would reach the top height of the wheel. One lad was watching from below as his friends soared aloft and travelled up, round and down.Everything was fine, the girls giggled and screamed as the wheel made its revolutions, anything else that might have been taking place was lost in all the noise and excitement.Suddenly the levity came to an abrupt halt and the cries were of fear and consternation. One of the chairs had come loose and was falling to mises will not be met ‘at once, but it is better that Canada should recover and stand on its feet than that it should be allowed to continue and fail.Other restrictions will be put into force in an effort to bolster the economy and keep our present standard of living in force. If this is not enough, then other trials will have to be made. This is probably the first austerity period that Canada has had outside of war time. The people of Great Britain went through such a time and they came out of it in real good shape — surely the people of Canada can co-operate and do the same thing.Less goods can be brought into Canada by people visiting in other countries, so all will have to watch this in future. The present regulations are temporary only and as soon as recovery is made and the economy is once again on an even footing, the controls will be gradually released. This newspaper has pointed out from time to time that our economy was not all it should be and has suggested that certain lines should be followed in order to change the course we seemed to be following. We have advocated the wooing of foreign market for some few years as the means of best bolstering our economy.Long before the European Common Market became a common subject, this newspaper urged the Government to investigate the possibilities of at least becoming a part of it.It was realized at that time that our markets would suffer if the Common Market ever became a fact and Great Britain became a part of it, as we believed she must for her own benefit. The only other move would be for an integrated Commonwealth dealing within itself for all products that are otherwise imported by one or the other.Trading outside only for those needs not supplied from within and selling such goods or raw materials which other countries may need and over which we have control within the Commonwealth. This may sound quite complicated, but it could be worked out.In that way it might be possible to prevent Great Britain from joining the European Common Market. All of these various moves affect our Canadian economy far more than any of us realize. It is thus that any move anywhere in the world which may affect our markets now or in the future, should be given careful consideration and study.Meanwhile, we shall have to study our domestic economy with a view to getting the deficit cut and the books balanced, An Accident Turns Pleasure To Sorrow the ground. So suddenly did it happen that the friend who was waiting below did not see it and the chair came hurtling on top of him and crushed him, The riders in the chair were thrown out and all were injured. No one actually saw the accident, so few could give a graphic account of what actually happened. However, four young people from Chateauguay were injured and some quite seriously, One can imagine the quiet that came over this celebration and in a short time all operations ceased. The injured parties were gathered up in ambulances rushed to the scene as quickly as possible and they were removed to hospital for treatment of their injuries. We can only hope that all recover, No doubt an enquiry will have to be made into the reason for the accident. For the chair to suddenly give way there must have been a defect which caused it, or something which developed after the ride was in operation.will However, the fun was turned to anxiety as near tragedy stalked the rounds on Saturday afternoon.Dominion Day EXT Monday will be observed as Dominion Day — or — Canada Day, just whatever way you want to look at it.It will be a national holiday and of course will make one of those long week-ends.It also comes at a time when a number of people are starting their holidays.First of all we would like to add a word of caution for all who will be taking to the roads during this week-end.We suggest that you drive carefully at all times in order to prevent accidents, There are far too many accidents at every week-end the past while.Reports are that they are mounting.Mind you these are not all road accidents — some are boating and swimming, some from other causes, but quite a number of them are from traffic. We cannot tell you when is the best time to go and come back, we must leave that to your own judgment. However, when you get on the road don't take chances, keep alert at all times, watch the moves of the other fellow, don't crowd the car in front of you, regulate your speed according to conditions and circumstances.Perhaps you will get to where you are going much sooner if you don't try to overtake everyone else on the road.Let a few overtake you, what's a few minutes here or there so long as you arrive safely at your destination. If you are starting out on your holiday trip, don’t try to do the whole thing in one day, unless it is only a short distance. You'll want to enjoy the holiday and remember you are the one who will be doing the driving and also that it is supposed to be a holiday.Just a few words about what may be happening locally. This week-end the Legion has a celebration planned, On Monday, there will be the usual annual Farmers’ Picnic at Greig's Grove near Howick.— “The Gleaner”
