this new dam, the river would be wide and deep, ideal for boating, fishing, etc.Townspeople who admire the dam as it is would have more to admire.1# POSSIBLE?Yes.Probable?No.But remember Valley-'area and even if it was never used for the purpose of field, among other centres, before impsovements were made?rescuing a drowning person, it would be on hand if needed: ‘people who invested heavily to prepare for an influx of itourists who are so near at hand but who might as well be a thousand miles away insofar as the tourist dollar is jconcerned.w# MANY FARMERS are finished haying and some have done just about all they plan to do.The crop is a bumper one, heavy and of good quality.This seems gencral, even far to the south where there is generally a good market for local hay.There certainly won't be a shortage this year and some farmers are saying they have too much.w# JEAN LUSSIER says his corn crop Is exceilent this year and it will be available in the near future.The corn in many fields started to tassie about ten days age.With corn coming in, it must be later than we thought .summer will be over before we've really become accustomed to it.ss THE NEED OF A LIFEBOAT located near the dam in Huntingdon has often been the cause for considerable discussion.For generations, youngsters have been swimming in the area between the dam and the bridge and perhaps some will continue to swim there even after a swimming Most of us have seen the river be- Expo, but is disappointing to merchants and other business the area where Mrs.Patenaude reported she saw the body.About 11 a.m., under Q.P.P.supervision, the body of Dennis Beare was recovered by Paul Morris and Bobby Groleau of Huntingdon, cated the body of Francis Patenaude in a hole about twelve were at the bottom of the hole.children were there with their parents.| covered was considerably bloated and discolored and the warm, polluted water had a much greater effect that one might suspect in a period of less than 48 hours.People not aware that a lifeless body taken from the water is unpleasant to see will know another time and it definitely is not a place for young children.w THE BODIES were taken to the Kelly Funeral Home pool becomes a reality.A lifeboat could be kept in this Frankly, strangers to Ourtown are favorably impressed .for recovering bodies drowned elsewhere on the river.it’s clean, there are many beautiful homes and these as well um WHEN PEOPLE GATHERED near the scene of the, as many of the more ordinary homes are kept painted and in double drowning tragedy that occurred two miles from Hun-; a good state of repair; there are pienty of trees of many Lingdon last week, boats were hard to find.One small row- species that create a favorable impression: our stores are boat owned by the Robert J.Payne family was available, : : good and look good: the parks are pleasant and picturesque.Put it wasn’t until Thursday morning that two more boats to original reports, the truth is that Dennis could hardly Without a word of exaggeration.Huntingdon is a town that were brought to the scene.appeals to people.ing walls along the river banks between the two bridges at! ls.Needed HE tragedy of the past week seems to f up the need for a swimming pool in our area.Here is the case of two lives being lost because neither had much knowledge of swimming.With the amount of water that we have in our area, everyone should know how to swim and handle themselves in water.With a properly supervised swimming pool in Huntingdon, children and adults could take a cooling dip with a far less degree of danger than at present.There would be instructors as well as lifeguards present.Precautions would be taken to prevent mishaps and if they should happen then someone would be ready to effect rescue.Swimming classes for the various age groups would be part of the pool plan and thus in a short time young children would be taught the rudiments of swimming and water safety.In time they would be able to help others.There would be less likelihood of drownings and such, A swimming pool, properly supervised, would have many more uses than may be first supposed.Certainly there would be no need to take a swim in polluted waters such as the Chateauguay River.Proper sanitary measures would be in effect to look after the well being of those using the pool.Think this over and make up your mind to subscribe to this worthwhile Centennial plan for Huntingdon.Keep A Watch Out HERE are things happening in this , Province today that on the surface do not seem to add up.Perhaps deep, deep down there is a reason, There seems to be a defiance of Federal rights and laws and things are being taken into the hands of Provincial officials which should be handled by Federal officials.The visit of General de Gaulle is a case in point.Truly he was invited by the Province, but here again it seems that the Province is taking matters into its own hands, But when Provincial officials and City officials try to “hog” the show it would seem that this is going too for.Foreign dignitaries and especially heads of foreign governments are usually under Federal jurisdiction.The invitation usually comes from the Federal Government and the reception upon arrival is under the same jurisdiction.In the present case the Federal Government has had to force its way into the picture in order to carry out protocol, Then there is the business of the Provincial Government handling the publicity of the visit and handing out its own releases, It is not a usual procedure in cases of this kind.Newspaper reporters and other news media representatives do their own coverage in the regular way.Government spokesmen however, say it 1s not unusual for the Government to hand out releases.The latter is true, but the releases are from various departments of the government and not about what are actually public events.It is announced that this is the first time this has been tried, It could be the thin edge of restricting the news except by government handouts, This sort of thing was mooted some fime ago when the new form of public information was announced.At the time it was quickly hushed up especially when a number of ne papers commented that the freedom of the press would be invaded.The iron hand has appeared in several places over the past few months where restrictive measures have been niroduced by legislation, On the surface they appear to be what is required, but decper reflection could show that such have a lessening of our freedoms, Now apparently the latest move with regard to school commissions would seem to show that the government wants to obtain the controlling hand in this.However, the Opposition has asserted itself and at least the final decision has been heid over.The people need to watch these apparently harmless moves on the part of the government or they may find that all their rights and freedoms have been The Search For À Leader ROBABLY the next most important P event in this country will be the coming Progressive-Conservative Party convention wnen the spotlight wiil be on the choice of a new leader tor the Party, Since the announcement was made last year that such a convention would be held, many candidates have come torward with leadership aspirations in mind.Meantime the present leader, John Lietenbaker, has not said much about it, He has made no offer to resign and he has made no sign that he will be one of the candidates tor leadership.a It is to be notea that most of those who have offered themseives as candidates, are those who have had differences with the present leader at one time or other.However, they were under the wing of their leader despite their differences and it seems more like a case of biting the hand that feeds them so to speak.Daiton Camp, the National President, also took turn about tactics in an effort to have Mr.Diefenbaker discredited and bring about the Leadership convention It still looks as if Mr.Diefenbaker has been given a raw deal, .: Mr.Diefenbaker brought the Party out of the doldrums when they were consistently the official opposition of a small number, to a point where they had an overall majority to form the Government of Canada.He fought several elections until he was defeated by a small majority Liberal Government which Is now in power, it seems that his past accomplishments have been ignored by his Party and that ney now only see his defeat, ‘they rhere- rore no longer regard him as an asset.This Leadersinp convention in September can only produce two things.A new leader may be chosen who can give the Party renewed vigor, or once again it could tail into distavor with the voting public and be soundly defeated.Should Diefenbaker be a candidate and be chosen the Leader once again, there could be a number of reactions.He wouid most assurrediy rally around a stronger taction of his Party and he would re-enter the ring with a greater determination than ever betore of winning the support of the voters.Should an election come about and his Party once again assume power, we are quite sure he would make a much more careful choice of those he wished to form his cabinet.|t is quite possible too, there would be a number of changes in the national direction of the Party.The Party has probably never had a stronger leader than Mr.Diefenbaker and this has shown up notably while this group has formed: the opposition in the Federal House.There are some among those who are now offering themselves for the leader: ship who are quite fickle and have made no show of resolutenss.They thersfors in our opinion would not make good leadership material.Wednesday, July 26th, 1967, SMILEYS — TO — EXPO — Don't tell me there any creative writers in Ca- Inada.The o uatry is crawl ‘mg with thew, More than 100 entries for the Smileys-to-Ex- po guest column have arrived, and they're still pouring in.My wife thought all along it was rather an ill-conceived ‘project, or as she put it, “a dumb ideal”, and I'm beginning to agree with her.One of tiie chief hitches is that 1 forgot to organize some Judges.So I'm it.So, first of all, I must read them all, some \\wice, some thrice.‘l'his 1s going to absorb about 100 hours, and the whole idea mn tne first peace was that I'd get a holiday.Something wrong there, somewhere.Secondly, all those who dont win, along with their families and friends, are going to hate me for life.It's easy out deliberately alienating! about 2,000 people.LR] ETE EE CONTEST aren't breakfast dishes rotted in the sink.Others were immaculately typed, submitted flat in manuscript form, with return enve- § lupe enclosed.Some writers ËZ want à pen name used, others @ want their names in big, bold type.They come Irom office work use impeccable English, bu others ribald, named John and Lester, be be around long.Jim Kerr of Red Deer vents his dislike of teachers in no uncertain way.A former student of mine (Hi enough to make enemies with- what u character her grandpa And thirdly, it's costing me $20, tu acquire 100 hours ol) work, and 2,000 hostile natives.Sort of silly, isn't it, | However, | dunnit and I'm glad.The ’luronto lelegram;
