[" Huntingdon County Scores High In Beautification Compe tition With Two Top Winners Earlier in the year and for some months prior to in the previous year, the people of this area and others in the Province of Quebec were urged to beautify their farms and other properties. When the time came for the competition to close entries, we did not hear too much about who had entered or what had been done. The competition actually started in 1964 and the plan was for the beautification of the farms of the countryside to provide a lasting impression on visitors to our country.Throughout the Province of Quetec an enrolment of 9,100 competitors was obtained and these were divided into divisions as follows: 1st, For farmers deriving their living from the farm; 2nd., for gentlemen farmers, institutions and companies, who owned NEW POST OFF eligible for trophies and a certificate of merit. However, in this group no local competitor was enrolled.Of the former group 150 entries were combined with Hun.tingdon and Napierville coun tles grouped together to form a unit.Huntingdon did very well in this competition winning the two top prizes, showing that our area is still in the top bracket when it comes to fine farms. On Monday, October 23rd, Mr.Leon A, Beaudin accompanied Francois Trepanier of Lee’s Corners and Raymond Arthur of Rockburn to the Dupont Auditorium at Expo, where they received first and second prizes respectively.Huntingdon was one of 70 units made up from the 9.100 ICE AND FIRE STATION FOR ATHELSTAN Athelstan is fo have federa] building, a new Post pension payments will increase to $76.50 a month starting in January, as the result of a government move to partially offset the rising cost of livink. At the same time, contributions to the Canada and Quebec pension plans will increase to a yearly maximum of $81.00 for an employed person, from the present $78.20.The announcement was made in the House of Commons yesterday at Health and Wel fare Minister Allan MacEa- chen, and immediately ran into a blast of criticism from some opposition members.Stanley Knowles (NDP —| Winnipeg North Centre) charged that the $1.50 a month pension increase is “ridiculous” and said it was an “insult” to old people.Mr.Knowles told newsmen that the cost of living has increased drastically in recent years, and that the two per cent pension boost announced by the minister comes nowhere near meeting the needs of Canada’s elderly people. The two per cent increase in the $75 a month old age pension marks the first time that the cost of living index in the old age security plan has been invoked. The index was added at the time the Canada pension plan was passed. It provides for a maximum increase of two per cent a ycar in old age security and Canada Pension Plan payments, as well as for an escalation in pension plan contributions to meet cost of living changes. The changes announced yesterday wil] bring about the following results, all effective January 1.— Old age security payments will increase to $76.50 a — The maximum payment under the guaranteed income supplement program will rise from $30.00 to $30.60 a month. Those receiving the pension and the maximum supplement wil] get $107.10 a month, compared to $105.00 at present.— Contributions to the Can ada and Quebec pension plans will be calculated on the basis of all income between $600 and $5,100 a year.Current maximum is $5,000.— Maximum yearly contributions to the Quebec and Canada pensions plans will increase to $81.00 for an employed person, from $79.20 at present, — MaXtmum contributions for self-employed people will increase from $158.40 at present to $162.00.— Maximum retirement benefit under the Canada and Quebec pension plan — first payable in 1976 — will now be $106.25 a month. The current farms. This latter group were farmers of the Province who entered the competition, Mr.Francois Trepanier received his prize, of a gold medal and a $200 cheque from the hands of Mr.Clement Vincent, Minister of Agriculture for the Province of Quebec. He will also receive a Certificate of Merit.Mr Raymond Arthur will receive a silver medal and a cheque for $150 and a Certificate of Merit. No accounting of the other winners was made at this time, but it is presumed it will be in due course.our County scored so high and that these competitors entered their farms in the competition which was specially for this Centennial year.Once again we do not have to take second place and can enjoy the fact | that our farms are among the best.Turn Time Back Sat.This Saturday night | people will be able to catch up with the hour they lost in the spring, by turning the time back one hour to once more weeklong series of electioneering, netted not a thing but, headaches, empty purses and bitter disappointment to several candidates in the Toronto area last week.On the other side of the coin, jubilation reigned as the final hour told the tale on Tuesday as the last ballot was counted and a well poised Conservative Premier Robarts accepted the good wishes of heaming NDP Macdonald as Liberal Nixon took stock of his losses versus his gains, in their bids for the Ontario Leadership. It was no surprise that Robarts’ seat in the house was secured, a little less secure than last election, those twenty NDP members will see to that, Macdonald, though far short of his Centennial Aim of 67 in 67 made a deep wedge in the Toronto area as well as gains in other parts of the Province. It was the good fortune of this writer to be present at many of the pre-election day meetings.1 seemed that all three parties had the same alms, re education and housing.Almost everyone, said the Government should share eighty per cent of education in the Province, and no one seemed to have any concise idea on just where the Government should stand on housing. There where those who owned homes, those who were about to own homes and those who had homes to sell, each hoping to get the best possible value for himself. No one dared come out and say how much he knew about the hanky panky which is going on in the real estate husiness in the city of Toronto today.Few mentioned the vast sums being collected, (by someone) for public services, and after ten years no sewage in some suburbs just the collector for that unpaid hill.No one mentioned (in his insistance for Government Financed Education) the prob) lem in Toronto Schools (including Elementary Schools), of Glue Sniffing, or Pot smoking. One Candidate, up for Reelection, spent enormous sums on gifts for the voters in his riding. The ladies had rain hats and nail files, suitably engraved with the donor's name and address with an appeal to vote for “Progress”, the men were deluged with books of matches and more than seven thousand jig saw puzzles of the Province of Ontario were distributed to the school children, with a personal visit from the benov- elent one.He lost his riding, on election day.Poor fellow will have to spend the rest of his life finding a way to finance his losses.no doubt. It was a matter of amusement for this writer to listen to the verbal strategy of some of the candidates. The P.C’s assured their voters that if they voted for the NDP, the rich would be most surely robbed to make the underserving poor, rich.If a vote was cast for the Liberals, it was a sure way to pave a rosy path to Hell, not only that, some of the candidates could be very easily sent to Penitentiary, if the truth were only exposed. We were informed, in an informal gathering that the Leader of the Liberal Opposition, was inadequate as a leader, that Donald MacDonald was a Westerner, who came east, was By Bernice Cullen and was making a big noise in Ontario at the moment. This writer just sat and listened .and took notes.Did you khow that if you vote for Robert Stanfield that Canada will be dominated by the East?Did you know that if Pearson gets “IN”.The French will over run Canada?Did you know that if Mac- Donald, makes it.the country will be absolutely and certainly Socialized and Socialism is Communism?Do you know, that according to NDPer Pierre Burton, that Ontario is a Political Dynasty where the privileged are protected and the Public ignored, that the Government does nothing at all about anything until it is pushed to the wall and then does as little as possible” and yet John Robarts says that 9000 hospital beds have been added to Ontario's hos pital visit.om and Maggie tried in those three weeks to show them all they could of Canada and they visited Niagara Falls, Toronto, and many other points of interest and of course their unforgettable visits to Expo which they thoroughly enjoyed.Sure and 1 was honoured to have been invited to the farewell party for the Irish folk and what a grand way the Irish have of making one feel welcome.Mr, and
