bears to the whole space occupied by such advertisement.Editorial Notes. It Is Time to Take All Precaution E have come to a ti of the year when traffic and i conditions have changed and many a hazard lurks for the unwary. The first fall of snow brought with it conditions which, while we have been associated with them before, escape the memory after a term of summer driving. It was thus that the past week a large number of motorists were held up by the snowstorm and were unable to navigate their routes. They lost consider: able time, either by driving at a slower pace, or because they lost control of their vehicle on the slippery surface, or because motors stalled for some reason.Too many drivers wait until the last minute for everything.A car that is driven in winter needs some checking and readjusting for the term of cold weather driving and ather, hazards.Snow tires today have Bécome the means of combatting deep snow and slippery surfaces.A few years ago it used to be chains (we still think they are the best for the really bad placas).Snow tires are more convenient and less noisy and bumpy. The whole thing is that a car must be put.into winter driving shape at the first hint of bad weather. We had several hints and there was time to check on the needs.Yet, at the time of that storm, there were cars with carburetor and ignition troubles that stalled after the gruelling test they were given to buck the storm. The cars which were in condition made fairly good time and reached their des tinations in reasonable time.Others were left on the road and the occupants had to seek shelter until their vehicles could be taken care of.How often do we see cars being driven with just a peep hole through the ice or snow which is covering the windows. The driver is either too lazy or too impatient to properly clean his car so that he will be able to see properly for driving.Improperly cleaned windows are a hazard, not only to the driver himself but to all other vehicles on the road.We know it takes time to get ice off the windshield and other windows; snow takes time too, but it is not as bad as ice. There would be fewer accidents if the driver took the time to clear the ice or snow in order that he had clear vision when driving. Many motorists too, drive when their vehicles are not in perfect shape and not only inconvenience themselves, Portends of F all that is reported u~an comes to I pass, the future will hoi.>me anxious times and also some pleasurable moments. At the moment in this world of ours we are facing up to some of those anxious times but it seems some time will elapse before we shall actually catch up with them. There is considerable unrest in almost all parts of the world and it is difficult to predict the ultimate outcome.A world at peace is something we have not known for many decades. It is doubtful if we shall ever know it, but it is something that everyone is hoping for. Many of the demonstrations throughout the world are attempts to bring about peace. The world is fed up with war and riotous uprisings. At this time then there is considerable effort toward bringing peace to the world. There are indications that the Vietnam war may be brought fo a peaceful conclusion, but much has to be done before this can be brought about.Racial strife is another matter which needs attention.Riots erupt in var.fous parts of the world from time to time.i there is to be peace we must live in peace with one another. The greatest gift at this Christmas time would be peace for all the world, Another anxiety of the times is poverty end starvetion in what might be formed “amidst an era of plenty”.In “ this pert of the world it is hard for us té wnderstand how there could be poverty and want. However, to come extent, it but cause trouble for others.During snowstorms it is usually difficult to see the road. Many drivers follow the one set of tracks and if they get off of them, they are liable to stall, lt is a dangerous practice — especially after dark.Speed should be scaled down after dark because then it is much more hazardous to see approaching cars and judge the distance for passing.A little care in this matter would lessen the number of sideswipe accidents we hear about in the winter months. As we have often said in this column, one can’t blame the car, it is the driver who errs.If drivers would pay more attention to their driving and be on the defensive, there would be fewer accidents.Although roads are plowed and the surfaces salted, they are not as wide as in the summer. There are patches cf ice which loom up all oo suddenly sometimes and catch the driver unaware if he is not on the alert.Such ice patches can cause a driver to lose control of his vehicle and send it off the road into a ditch or a tree.If the driver is alert, he will use precaution and be ready if the moment occurs and at least be in a better position to control the vehicle.Safe Driving Week this year is from December 1st to 7th ard the Cartada Safavy Council has designated that week as a special one when drivers all across the country should do their best to keep accidents at a minimum. Many firms and persons support this week in various ways with a view to accident prevention.Of course even if the one week is a success, it takes more than seven days to really make a success of accident prevention. All drivers everywhere must practice accident prevention every day, every week in fact all the time.If concerted effort is put into this plan, then results may be achieved that will count. We have been fortunate in our area in the matter of serious accidents of late.We have not entirely escaped, but upon whe whole our record is not as bad as in some parts.Let us keep this up and improve upon it all the time.In 1967 across Canada 5,379 people died and 165,664 people were injured, many of them crippled for life.More _nd more drivers take to the road each year and our highways become increasingly more crowded.it is time each and every driver made a determined effort in this matter of accident prevention.the Future even exists within our own country. We are told that there must be more production of food in order to feed the starving of the world.Fantastic it is, yet the situation is real.Canada and the United States are continually being asked to help fess fortunate countries by offers of food and such. One of the difficulties of this is the difference of the eating habits of the people of other countries.it is therefore necessary to help them with foods other than those of which we are accustomed. In cereals for instance, we grow wheat and other such grains and we manufacture them into various kinds of foodstuffs. In the eastern countries where most of the famine exists, rice is the staple food and, of course, we do not grow that.We rear cattle for meat and we hardiy have enough for our own needs at times. In India for instance, the cow is sacred and its products as we know them are not used. Thus we could not send beef.So it goes.We have tried to show these people ways in which they might increase the production of those products which they use for food.We have introduced some of our products and tried to educate the people in their use.The different eating habits have produced complications such 8s hoalth, etc, This also has to be over come. There are other causes of poverty other than insufficient food, The popuia- tion itself is expanding at too fast a rete to provide à suitsble economic standard == LETTERS TO Box 662, Huntingdon, Quebec.November 25, 1968.Dear Keith, On behalf of the Chatcau- guay Valley Highland Pipe Band may 1 express our sincere thanks for the very kind remarks and comments which appeared in your editiorial ot November 13th.However 1 hope you will permit me the space in your column to correct one major error. The band is not clo.hed in full uniform.Six of the members were wearing what are properly called private jackets and are not really a band uniform. Some of these are owned by the band, two are: pri vaiely owned and one was borrowed. Then five of the members were attired in jac kets which were donated by an organization who had sin ce acquired new ones.Thesc had to be retailored from the waist down, and are propel a tire for a pipe band now that they have heen so altered, There are enough of these Jackels for four of the pipers who are presently wearing the private jacke:s.However a “ood eye would have noticed that three of the members were wearing just blue blazers and in addition one member was not playing for the simple reason .hat a jacket was not available, and another would not have been playing, excepting that a member who was ill had loaned her jacket so that someone else might be able to ake part, It is still necessary for the band to buy or have made at least seven jackets just to will match. Then, since we are expecting that four or five more members will be play ing with the band by spring.it will soon be necessary 0 order complete uniforms fou them.In order that we may be able to do this, the band is currently planning another Sco.tish concert, to take place on January 25th., and on Feb- tuary 1st.We are trying to make this year's concert just as successful as last year's one, and hope the public will give us as uch support and encouragement as they did last year so that we may be able to finish outfitting the badd. All members are working very hard right now on not only tew marches, bu: are also working on a strathspey, retreat and two slow marches, which we hope to have ready in time for the concert. We in the band enjoy our weekly prac ices very much.and hope that we can continue to provide enjoyment for others in the Valley We have heen very fortunate in the suppor: which we have received so far.and hope we will continue to deserve it.Your very truly.Mrs.Gordon Tannahill Secretary, Chateauguay Valley Highland Pipe Band.Robert James Clarke, A‘helstan, Quebec.November solution could be found except to recommend greater production where that is needed.Let us take a look at the future. We are being told continually of that Utopia which is supposed to come about in the year 2,000.As others see it, at that time the world wiil have taken on great changes.Already it is said the changes are taking effect. There are fewer hours of labor on the part of everyone. There is greater reliance upon machines to do work that was once only thought possible by hand labor. It was originally thought impossible to find a substitute. An important time is envisaged as the Golden Age, for all those who enter retirement.Their work and service ended insofar as the regular duties are concerned, the life envisioned for these citizens is one of relaxation and enjoyment in doing those things they had always wanted to do.People will go into retirement much earlier and be provided for to a greater extent. This will come about by a greater use of computers for all manner of tasks. The worker will work less hours and have more leisure time.Wages will be such that he will be able to enjoy this leisure time without undue stress on his monetary resources. This will also provide for his retirement at an earlier date.Computers will eaualize the various activities throughout the world. When shortages of this end that show up, production in them will be stepped up to fill demand.Over production on the other hand will be cut until the demand catches up.With an equalization of this sort, the world will be brought into balance and people will I eA 1 A ER receive more of the world’s benefits as required. In other words there will be less greed and more organized benefits for those who produce them.A few years ago there was a movement in Canada known as Technology. The followers of this hoped that their plan would be accepted. The scheme abolished money as a form of procurement for goods and services and replaced it with a point system of energy. That is to say everyone was credited by points of the amount of energy exerted in providing the things needed.À day or week's work would entitle a person to so many units, or points of energy with which to purchase the groceries, clothing, cars and so forth. In the case of cars however, no person would own one outright as is the case now.He would have the use of one for so many units of energy for the length of period desired. The projected evolution which is spoken about for the year 2,000 and on, has all the highlights of this so-called Technology that was visualized some years ago. There is a great trend at this time to change our method of taxation which is felt to be outdated. It would seem that little provision has been allowed for taxation with which to provide the people with the so-called benefits ÿhey enjoy in this day.Yet they are promised far more.It is not likely that many of us alive.today will see these changes, but there are certainly evidences of rapid change going on in our time.It is as if preparation is being made for such changes, yet there does not seem to be any move by governments toward these changes. It almost seems that they are being brought about in spite of ourselves.Huntingdon W.I.The W.met at the home of Mrs J.Helm on November 12th.Plans were made for the Christmas mee:ing to ‘bc held at the home of Mrs Lindsay. An invitation was ex tended from Mrs, C.Carpemiier and Mrs.Clarence Platt.Mrs.Alma Fraser led the worship ser vice, assisted by Mrs.Martha Currie ond Mrs.C.Platt, us ing “The Gift of Speech” found in “The Power and the Glory”, Guest speaker for the afternoon was Mrs.T.C.Gunion of Herdman, a former social worker in the Douglas Hospital and now associated with the Gai Valley School in Hun.tingdon.She said it was hard to get rid of the old idea of mental illness and the stigma attached to it.Like diabetes, T.B., etc.it is an illness, curable in the majority of cases and treatable in others. Now that there are more and .better drugs, and more knowledge about the illness, sick people are getting better. When people realize they are ill they often sign themselves in, and they can go in and come out by themselves, Years ago patients sometimes entered hospital and often were forgotten and they knew no other home.Mrs.Gunion told of one woman who entered at 14 years of age and stayed for 83 years.Similar patients have always had someone lo do for them and are frightened at the prospect of doing for hemselves, These people need retraining.Gradually they are taught to buy clothes, gifts, jewellery for themselves, first in the hospital tuck shop then in shops in town. There is now a part of the hospital for retarded children and Mrs.Gunion says it is amazing what specially train- ed people can do for these children.À lot of patience is involved because sometimes months pass before a change l occurs, She cited the case of one child who didn’t speak for 6 months, then eventually did, slowly learned to read and now takes out children’s books from the library.to read himself, , .By sending good used clothing and costume jewellery to the Douglas Hospital the U.C.W.is doing a big service. These things are put into the hospital shopping centre and patients learn to pick out what they want and pay a small sum for their purchases.the money being used to buy other things.During the business meeting several bills had to be paid.New tablecloth material had been bought and then made up lby Mrs.C.Carpentier in time j.or the Harvest Supper, $10 for the
