Modern?E have heard the expression ‘’That’s Modern”.We have seen those things which we are told are modern. This is a new modern age we have been told.At the risk of being thought ‘old hat’ or born thirty years too soon, we would say that much of what is believed modern is really from the middle ages.We have various types of our young men who wear their hair long or have long sideburns and even a mustache, or a beard ard we are told this is modern. We don't have to go back many years for men to be showing off sideburns, mustaches and beards. In fact it was the style.À little further back and we could come to the long hair and some splendid hairdos. In fact these hairdos had a much more effective look because those who had them took fastidious care of their hair.In some cases of course, wigs were worn, The long hair of today, in a number of cases, looks as if some toiletries were needed. In this earlier age it was also the style for men to wear elaborate shirts, velvet coats and britches in bright colors. Our young men of today are beginning to wear colored suits and coats in varied design. We are told this is modern. The cut of the suit may have a modern touch, but that is about all.On the female side we have been treated to an amazing number of styles which have been characterized as modern. We must say that the mini skirt is modern compared to_earlier years when milady’s dress used to drag the ground. In those days the trend was to cover up.Today it is to uncover everything possible with the consequence that in beach wear there is much nudity. In some places, ‘topless’ women have appeared. We are told that sex must be displayd in more ways and there is no doubt that some women’s styles are doing their best.Women have also turned to wearing trousers. The latest trend is toward this type of apparel for evening wear.In view of the fact that many women are doing men's jobs, the wearing of trousers in certain vocations is quite sensible. However, there are some occasions when something more feminine would make better sense. But this is modern. With this electronic age we have many gadgets which were not in vogue in earlier years. For these we are truly thankful as they save us the considerable work and energy that was expended befere their introduction. To mention a few, where would we be today without washing machines, dryers, vacuum cleaners, toasters or cook- stoves? Those things alone have taken much of the drudgery out of housekeeping.Electricity in general has eased our way of living and provided us with entertainment in the way of radio and television. These things may be regarded as truly modern.A more illusory change has come about in the matter of ladies’ hairstyling. Her ladyship used to depend upon her own ingenuity to do her hair styling. Now she goes to the beauty parlour and gets it done. She might even be wearing a wig. This latter might not be as modern as some would have us believe.Wigs were worn away back when.Even some of those loose styles now being worn by the teens are a throwback to earlier days.We should not be lulled into a sense that all that is happening in this day is modern.Much of it is being derived from the past — it just looks new, that's all, The Montreal Expos F late the Montreal Expos baseball team has put on a most disappointing exhibition. We do not look for wins all the time, but we do not look for losses either. This is a picked team of players which is supposed to put Montreal on the map insofar as baseball is concerned.Unfortunately the team is not pure bred Canadian stock and to our mind this is not good. Our idea is that the players should all be of Canadian extraction and thus able fo truly represent Montreal and Canada as Canada’s own baseball team.We would rather see a truly Canadian team struggling to do its best, than one such as we have now.We believe that a Canadian team could be trained and make a name for itself in due course if the proper facilities were afforded. How much better it would be to have the Expos true Canadian.Montreal and the rest of Canada would have something to be really proud of.The Montreal Expos started off with by winning, but soon lost the habit and picked up a losing streak it seems unable to shake.Such exhibitions will not draw big gates — more especially in view of the make-up such a team would have much ambition to make a real showing for Montreal. There must be pride of achievement, pride of accomplishment and an urge to do the best for the home fans. While perhaps Montreal is not much concern of ours, the team does represent Canada. In hockey the “Habs” help rep- rasent Canada in the National League, but they are local players and that counts too.lf we are going into baseball let us have local players even if they start out a bit wesk.Given confidence and practice they should improve after a season and perhaps go on to successes in the future. If they did lose, it would at least be our own citizens who would be doing it.Not having had a baseball team in the field before, it is going to take a little while to get one’ into shape. There would be more enthusiasm if the team is composed of local citizens, or Canadians. It is something to think about and the who's who in Montreal should be giving the matter some consideration right now.Perhaps next season an all_Canadian team could be fielded which would have some- tample, su settled myself in a'sure the sink was coming.other hilarious objects, ibeen
