of a large number dents.The attitude however has undergone somewhat of a transition, * The belief that our men in Ottawa were to adopt a policy of indiscriminate land expropriations has been set aside.The May 19 meeting in Howick established one.fact, at least one statement: Messrs.Laniel and Mitchell stressed the point that there was to be no such unpleasaniness, Those who still fear what they refer to as underhandedness on the part of the government can take solace in the fact that re- or, presentatives of the federal in the project and our M.P.Mr.Laniel pointedly stated that The Sanitation Department of the Town advertises garbage pick-up on Mondays and Thursdays during the summer months, On our street everyone knows that the Monday pick-up is rarely made on Monday so most of us put our garbage out on Tuesday.The Sanitation Department with their delightful sense of humor occasionally do pick up on Monday which is as adver- ‘tised but rather distressing to those of us who have to harbor our waste until the next pickup.Even more distressing to us but probably even funnier to the Sanitation Department is when they pick up early Tuesday moring.When this happens husbands all up and down the street get pushed out of bed and are forced by their spouses to dash around before breakfast with the slim hope that they will beat the Sanitation Department truck which usually comes down the street very quickly as only a fraction of the householders have their garbage out early Tuesday morning A distressing variation is wheni the truck comes up the street on Tuesday morning when ope is all lathered up to shave — or is in the shower.You dash around emptying ali the waste baskets etc., only to find occasionally that it wasn't the garbage truck after all — just a noisy truck with a loose fender which imitates the clanging sound of trash cans being handled.A few weeks ago we got our garbage out on Tuesday morning and smugly thought we had beaten the; Sanitation i Department by time.” We ey 80 sure however on Tuesday evening when our dog-sirewn garbage adorned our fromt lawn when we came home from work, of us on the street were Wi EEE pick-up when the (2) ors to the Éditoe + still adorned our front lawns on Wednesday noon.It was even more frustrating to find the garbage gone on Wednesday evening.We had no way of knowing whether or not the Monday pick-up was late or the Thursday pick-up early.The saddest part of the whole affair is the effect on the chil dren.I'm referring of course to the ‘‘credibility gap.” The kids are constantly deceived by the deluge of advertising that does not live up to its promises.They are pragmatic enough to assimilate a certain amount of discrepancy in commercial advertising but to find that the Town (a non-profit organization) not living up, to its promises inclines them more than ever to question the sincerity of everyone including their parents and teachers.I've heard that in some cases this sort of thing even contributes to student riots! There must be some possible solutions to this dilemma, When the town advertises garbage pick-up on Mondays and Thursdays the garbage should actually be picked up on these days.Of course this is probably too much to hope for so I propose another solution.The town should run the following advertisement in The Gleaner.GARBAGE PICK-UP NOTICE Garbage in the Town of Hun- tingdon will usually be picked up twice weekly between Mondays and Fridays at times dictated by the following exigencies: (1) Delays caused by heavy snow falls, Breakdown of equipment.The availability of authorities to sign requisitions for spare parts, The availability of requisition forms.The availability of spare (3) (3) parts, .(6) A thousand and one other similiar miscellaneous ‘peusibl; ties, ’ Granted such an advertixe- ment will not improve the ser vice but at least it will describe the service the way it is thus improving the “credibility gep” in the eyes of tiie ehildtes.6 had missed the Mons garbage) .TU etill expect © be pushed out of bed occasionally early on a Tuesday morning.The dogs and cats will have their regular field days almost every day of the week scattering garbage on the front lawns of taxpayers homes.People are and will be even more used to seeing and smelling moulding garbage in front of every home which only adds to the increasing regular pollution with which they have to contend.I'd be the last one to spoil anybody's fun, We all have a sense of humor and a good laugh is refreshing.When you are the butt of the joke however you can sometimes still laugh but I find this somewhat difficult early Tuesday morning after being up late watching the late show the previous evening.It does however give me a sense of exhilaration when I do beat the Sanitation Department’s truck.He who laughs last laughs best.I strongly suspect however that the Town's Sanitation Depart~ ment laughs best.Sincerely yours, Thomas C.Bell.May 25, 1971 Editor out at the recent union of municipalities meeting could mean a great deal to the local area.First off it will divide the two per: cent rebate on the eight percent sales tax per capita to municipalities instead of leaving the whole bundle within the area in which the spending is done, and this in turn could result in amalgamation when Chate auguay Centre loses the profit on a good share of the Town spending.We have, over the past several years encouraged sup port for building of small businesses in our own area, not only for the amount of tax money that they will pay on their property, but also for the rebate of taxes if we could do our shopping at home.A great number of objectors fail to see the need for this and rush out to block every by law as soon as they hear about it, This is a real problem, since these same persons then attack the council every time a needed increase in municipal funds causes a tax hike, —— ee ce —— GEORGE KENNEDY — Absence from that meeting only means that they had more important things to do at that time.Since you did not bother to mention the absence of any other profession or ofganization except the clergy and the ; church, allow me to answer for at least 3 of the clergy of the town.As several items in the last issue of the Gleaner report, there has been a young clergyman in our area for the past week or so sharing information about his “work” during the last two years with the underprivileged of Italy.On the night of the poorly-at- tended meeting in question, 3 of the Protestant clergymen of Huntingdon were with this “missionary” and a group of young people, playing ball and receiving first-hand news of the real needs of the world.We were also attempting to open the way for some of the young people to gather together on future occasions to express and meet their basic youthful needs, A very limited number of the young of our area have their needs meet in hockky alone.Now, Mr.Editor, your absence from contemporary worship is very conspicuous by your suggestion that young people are too smart to want to ‘hear someone spewing fire and brimstone about donations to missions when earnest effort right here would result in benefits for all.” I believe it has been many moons since that approach has been taken in any pulpits in this area — namely spewing fire and brimstone.You see, the threat of suffocation and sulphur as formerly suggested by preachers has been taken over by environmentalists and public crusaders like Ralph Nader.It appears that just as few people listen to the warnings today as they did in an earlier age under different terms.How can you possibly compare the challenge to “share the wealth” of our physical and spiritual resources with the whole world (which is what missions is all about) with the need for artificial ice in this community?It is the young people of today who criticize churches and go vernments and other forms of “status quo’ for spending millions on buildings and extravagances when there is so much real need around the world, If that is true, the young would be the first to do without the luxury of an artificial ice plant in this community when there is a much greater need for (1) at least one senior citizens’ residence, (2) a sewage disposal plant to help clean up our beautiful rivers ete., (3) financial support for millions of refugees in every country of the world who have too little to eat, let alone artificial ice to play on with expensive hockey equipment, Finally, while commending you for your concern for the youth of our community, may I invite you to drop in sometime in the next few months at the Huntingdon United Church on Friday nights where our Elders are Stewards have recently unanimously approved the opening of our entire basement facilities for TEENAGERS.We are leaving them room to prepare their own program responsibly, but at the least, to have a place (at no cost’ to them or the general public) where they can ‘be with themselves” and their friends on at least one night of the week, YOU - SEE, WE the Masters being a Yellow|Hattie Shearer.Chiffon Cake and the Subordi-| The judges were given a nate, a Banana Nut Loaf.small gift in appreciation of © A goodly number of entriesitheir work, and thanks goes to were on hand and under the|Pearl Milne for use of har capable judging of Carol Green-|home.{following prize winners were: "Yellow Chiffon Cake, 1st Prize | Grange holds baking contest On Fridav aft rnoon, May 28, Fleanor Goundrey, 2nd Prize the Grange Baking Contest was,Bessie Graham.held at the home of Pearl Mil-| Banana Nut Bread — 1st ne.There were two contests —|Prize Anita Smith.2nd Prize Eleanor and Anita will compete at Pomona this week on the County Level.bank and Beatrice Jamieson the marshmellows and hot dogs were consumed with relish.Belated happy Birthday wishes, Connie from all your friends Ste.Agnes CELEBRATES BIRTHDAY On Saturday evening, May 29,|in the old home town._, Miss Connie Stowel] was guest] Mr.Harry Older, Connie's of honour at a birthday party grandfather.also celebrated his given for her by her friend, Pirthday royally on Satürday.Mr.André Castagnier, at the His actual birthday fell on May home of his parents, Mr.and a but he was ee ;
