orecast for Cleyn & Tinker Francois E.Cleyn at his desk .Over 100 residents sign No.52 petition by Ken Johnstone A quick count of signatures obtained in the first week of the circulation of a petition to prevent the destruction of maple trees and stone walls on Highway 52 revealed today that more than 100 residents along he highway and in the adjacent area have already signed. It was predicted that this number would be doubled by next weekend.Prominent among the signatures as a resident of Havelock is that of Quebec's Minister of Lands and Forests, Kevin Drummond. The provincial engineer for the district, Roland Provonost, was contacted by telephone. He told a representative of the Committee to Save Highway 52 that he would be pleased to receive a delegation when the current strike of provincial employees is Musical The prize list is out and entries are coming in for the Ormstown Exhibition, opening this year on June 7.Improvements for the coming year include discarding the ancient sheds running along the river road. This will please those living across the road, as the sheds were unsightly. The nearby trees are quite old and have been a source of trouble for some time with limbs falling on the roofs and also on the road. They are now being removed, causing sadness to those who were happy with the removal of the sheds.A contract has been entered into with Frost Fence Co.to erect 1,000 lineal feet terminated. He said that no plan was currently before the government to effect a widening of Highway 52, but he was aware of a movement to develop such a plan.Minister of the Environment Dr.Victor Goldbloom was reached by the Committee and said that he would be interested to learn more details of the project, but he pointed out that the responsibility for deciding on the preservation or the widening of the highway rested with Minister of Roads Bernard Pinard. At a meeting of the Committee to Save Highway 52.it was pointed out that reaction of many citizens ranged from such comforting assurances as ‘Ils a pipe dream: nobody wants to build such a highway along 52" to the pessimistie ‘It’s all organized already and no protest will ever stop it.” ride set of fence at a cost of several thousand dollars. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police Musical Ride will be the feature entertainment of evenings of June 7 and 8.Inspector Moran of the R.C.M.P.(in charge of the ride) was in Ormstown recently to finalize details.Lindsay Cullen was called in and given a synopsis of the type of music required for the various gaits.24 horses will participate in the ride, three extra horses will be with the group.Stabling must be furnished for the horses: motel accommodation has been reserved for 30 men.LEE Gerald W.Murphy was the lucky winner of a 1200-lb.Charoiais steer at the fund-raising dinner and auction held for the benefit of Chateauguay Minor League Baseball held at the Rustik Restaurant in Chateauguay on Thursday evening.Gerald, runner-up for the prize steer a year ago, is shown right and the happy man beside him is Auctioneer H.P.‘Jake’ Cleyn & Tinker Ltd.is Huntingdon County's largest single industry and a major source of revenue to the Town itself. How is the company getting along?Where is it going? What are the prospects for the future?Francois E.Cleyn, principal owner.has answered these questions and others of interest to the whole community in an interview with The Gleaner. The first part appears below, and another report will follow.Cleyn & Tinker Ltd.is looking forward to further growth in Huntingdon by expanding its sales around the world. But it will remain a Huntingdon company, and remain in the textile industry. In an interview this week Francois E.Cleyn told something of his hopes and plans for the company he founded in 1940 and still heads. From comparatively small beginnings it has grown to be a major factor in the Canadian textile industry. The company is already making itself felt in world markets.Textiles made in Huntingdon are sold today in 17 countries. The markets are principally, although not exclusively, in Commonwealth countries.Geographically the outlets range from Iceland to Singapore to the West Indies.Cleyn & Tinker's largest overseas market, Mr.Cleyn says with justifiable pride, is the United Kingdom.“That's really carrying coals to Newcastle,” for the manufacturing industry.Mr.Clevn's optimism for the future isn't based on present conditions. The 1971- 72 period will be the most difficult the company has known in its history.‘We have had to adjust to entirely new market demands. There has been a substantial reduction in our weaving capacity, and the difference hasn’t been made up by our interests in the knitting field,” said Mr Cleyn. The turnaround for the company will come, Mr.Cleyn believes, about the end of this year.Management has been actively looking - and the process is a continuing one - into other areas of the textile field in order to expand sales.“If we are to continue to grow we must become more U.K.is famous for her textile international.” said Mr.Cleyn.‘We're looking particularly at offshore markets.at the Common Market area of Europe for example.“We'll expand wherever we can, into other markets with our present products, or into allied textile fields. But it will be expansion from our home base right here in Huntingdon. And we'll stay in the area we know best - textiles. We've no desire to Company set-up The parent company, Cleyn & Tinker Ltd., has a number of subsidiaries: Manufacturing Ltd.Sherbrooke, wholly-owned spinning and weaving company similar to the Huntingdon operation.Paton specializes in the low end of the men’s wear market, especially in uniforms; Castle Comer Mills Ltd.Castle Comer, ireland.a wholiy- owned polyester wool manufacturer which sells its product all over the world, but especially in the United Kingdom: Model Dye Works Ltd.Huntingdon, a wholly-owned commission dye firm.Cleyn & Tinker is one of its customers; Ital Knit Ltd.Huntingdon, 50 percent owned by Cleyn & Tinker and the other half by Italian interests.Specializes in knitted men's wear.fabrics.Paton (continued on page 6) Working on some old beehives this week, Francois Trepanier of Lee's Corners came across a bit of nostalgic Canadian history.Probably for insulation, someone had placed under the lids copies of the magazine The Farmer's Advocate. The issues were published at various times in 1906,1910 and 1915.The Farmer's Advocate, founded in 1866.was at one time widely read by farmers in the Chateauguay Valley. It is no longer published. The issues uncovered by Mr.Trepanier were addressed to Robert Anderson and Alex Younie, although no municipal designation was given. Some of the advertisements will bring back pleasant memories to older district farmers.Ford offered its new touring cars for $590.Two passenger runabouts were $540.An American cream seperator was offered for $15.95.Selected seed grain offered by a Guelph firm included White Wave oats at $1 a bushel.OAC barley at $1.25, early Centennial peas at $2 and No.1 red clover at $13.50.Cream of the West flour sold at $3.85 per 98-pound bag and family cornmeal at $2.30.Whole Manitoba oats were $2.05 a 100-pound bag and Bullrush bran $1.30.This plane highjacking business could be catching.First thing you know some kid in a Huntingdon Academy school bus is going to whip out a water pistol and bark: “Drive me to Pivin' s Patates.” pere 1915 it was held at Ormstown June 2, 3 and 4, and $6.000 in prizes was offered.A petition asking for black: top for Cook's Lane sideroad and signed by residents of this mumicipality was received and the council agreed to ask the roads department to full thas request On request ol Gordon Tannahill, this council approved the opening and operating of a publie cam ping ground at the Tannahill farm, Range 8.The Provincial Govern ment has proposed changes lo the electoral map which, if brought into force, will mean that the voice ol the rural areas in this county will no longer be heard at election ume, as the urban votes will outnumber the rural votes.Due to the fact that the counties of Huntingdon, Chateauguay and Laprairie provide some of the richest farming areas in this Province, it does seem only tar that the rural areas be given a little more con sideration Therefore, council proposed one alternative solution, that is “That a rural county be created to include the rural areas ol Huntingdon, Chateauguay and Laprairie” The secretarv was authorized to forward a copy of this proposition to Premier Bourassa. The following bills were ordered paid Receiver General of also featured Pat Rae's black and white drawings of woodland scenes and a panting of the Hun- tingdon null and dam were of particular interest. Her ceramics were interesting and showed a sense of humour in most of the preces Mrs.White's contribution meluded a few ceramic pleces, antiques and pain tings.A lew of the pictures drew particular comment; most showed striking feeling for colour and texture Trees once more seemed fo be a common bond between painter and viewer, and presented some vivid compositions.Bird studies including a dramatic one of a seagull, were something new for Mrs.White.She has worked at painting most of her life and during this past summer studied with Kenneth Locheed at St.Andrew's-by-the-Sea.The showing opened Sunday, April 16 and will remain on display complaints that our address labels have ‘dropped off’ in the mail; others have remarked that sometimes our labels are placed smack in the centre of a picture or over a few lines of ype.To subscription The 1960” prints the information on the subscriber's newspaper. The new method of addressing will he ready within afew weekswhich means that our familiar labels will no louger be a few moments to read this ad.Please.In a period when many public service personnel are agitating for rights and recognition, our problems may seem remote and even tiresome. However, because our situation directly affects your children, we feel you will want to show your concern.Let us, therefore, tell you briefly of some of the issues which are at stake.Firstly — class size.Under present conditions, it is very often impossible for students to receive the individual attention they deserve.Ask your child how many chiidren are in his or her class, and how much time the teacher is able to spend with each individual — the answer will undoubtedly speak for itself.Next comes the issue of ‘classification’, which determines the salary a teacher receives. The Government unilaterally introduced a new system which would lower the ‘classification’ of many of our teachers — resulting in lower salaries. Is this fair to teachers who entered the profession in good faith under a different system?Further, a long overdue salary increase proposed by the Government actually results — after deductions — in a net loss of take-home pay. Also, many teachers are at a substantially lower salary level when compared to civil service employees with equivalent schooling. These are only some of the issues which have dragged on since last summer in our negotiations with the Government. So, you can appreciate the situation is serious and our concern genuine. We don't want to strike, but because these issues must be resolved it appears we may have no alternative.Wednesday, April 19, 1972 a mem Whatever the situation, your support can be invaluable to us in our negotiations.Your name on the letter below is an effective way of showing your support.Do take a few moments to consider the situation and, if you agree with our position, please forward the letter to us.Should you want to discuss the situation further, we would be very happy to
