19-year-old son of farmer Paul Vaillancourt of Covey Hill Road. The Vaillancourt farm is next to that of Aaron Churchill and it was young Vaill«rcourt who only last Monday tound Churchill fatally injured in a tractor accident.Just as Churchill was a much respected fourth generation farmer of the area, so was young Vaillancourt esteemed by neighbors as a hard-working, up-coming young man following in his farmer father’s footsteps.Picnic outing The drowning occurred during an outing on Sunday to Valleyfield with his girl friend, Annette Ducharme and her father and mother, Mr.and Mrs.Paul Ducharme who operate the quarry on Covey Hill, The group picnicked at the water’s edge close to the Monsignor Langlois Bridge and after lunch, in the day’s heat, Réal decided to go swimming.’ He had gone out only a short distance in swirling current when he was obviously in trouble.Mr.Ducharme raced to their camper to get a life belt and attempted to rescue the boy but was soon in trouble himself. One report was that a man in a rowboat nearby also tried to help and the current overturned his boat.Later police divers were called and young Vaillan- court's body was recovered in 50 feet of water.Border jumpers get bail Pair charged with thett Maurice Brady, 28, and Henry Barton, 25, both from the Ottawa area, have been remanded for trial at the fall assizes in Valleyfield on theft charges stemming from a June 20 incident at Covey Hill border crossing point when the men allegedly jumped the border.Brady and Barton appeared for preliminary hearing in Valleyfield last week. They were freed on bail after the hearing.Ç1 Both were arrested by Quebec.Provincial Police between Huntingdon and the Ontario border after police had been alerted by Customs At Hemmingford: Officer Hill.He said, two men from a car with Ontario licence plates and pulling a trailer had gone through the border point with goods on which duty had not been paid.At the time the names of the Cliff Greer at Covey men were not released. They became known with the court appearance of Brady and Barton on theft charges.Officer Greer, in his account of the incident, said the men had paid duty on certain articles, refused to allow search of the trailer and then tied him up and made off with the declared articles and the money they had paid. The Gleaner learned later that the trailer was discovered near St.Antoine Abbe and it had been demolished by fire.Baseball lagging More community participation is essential, says Florian Tardif, if sport is to make progress in the Hun- Tardif, chatting with The Gleaner.“But we need people to give more time and concern and attention if sport , particularly baseball, is to do more than limp along and only partially meet the need of our youth.” Last week Tardif, as secretary of the Huntingdon Minor Baseball League, accepted a king-sized cheque for $1,400 from the Optimist Club of Huntingdon. He was grateful indeed on behalf of the league. He said this is the sort of thing that Huntingdon community- minded people are doing well.“But, ’ he added, ‘What we need is more people to give their time.” Same People “Certain people are giving their time freely to help sport and the community is lucky to have them. But I must say the help is always coming from the same people and raises the feeling that they may become fed up at the lack of general support and then it could be that organized baseball will disappear from our scene.” Needed: Volunteer workers to act as coaches, referees and people to show a real interest in youth. And where baseball is concerned, he said, even a turn-out of more spectators for games would serve as encouragement to those who play and carry Huntingdon colors. He noted that civic pride is closely tied to sport and there are three teams in the Bo- Chato (inter-city) Baseball League representing Hun- tingdon. This, said Tardif, is (continued on page 9) Chateauguay Valley went along with thie Canadian insistence on majority government Monday and returned Liberal Gerald Laniel for the sixth time to the House of Commons. It was the same in St.Jean where Liberal Walter Smith was re-elected with the assistance of the Chateauguay Valley vote over Hemmingford way and in neighboring LaPrairie Ian Watson retained his Liberal seat.Latest standing in the House of Commons: Liberals 141; Progressive Conservative 95, NDP 16; Socred 11; Other 1.For Laniel it wasn't as easy as in the 1972 election but the trend to the Liberals became evident early in the vote counting and the CBC declared him elected around 9.165 p.m.as the Liberal tide mounted.Laniel held a majority of 8 .000 votes in 1972; this year with almost all of the 174 polls reporting at press time he led the field by 6,612.Poll-by-poll report Page 5 Laniel, speaking to The Gleaner said: “I am very happy, first for the response from my riding and then for the overall victory of the Liberal party. For met is a sixth mandate which is quite an achievement and my thanks go to the more than 1,000 party workers and the many more voters who supported me.I am more than happy at the return of a majority government which ensures sufficient time for the Trudeau administration to prove its policies in the difficult times ahead.” The Liberal’s most serious .competition came from Progressive-Conservative Laurent Cyr of Beauharnois who conducted probably the ridings most vigorous campaign in his first attempt for federal office.Cyr was disappointed but not discouraged.“We did the best we could,” he told The Gleeaner.I want to thank all those who worked for me and who supported me.As a party we made good gains and perhaps, in view of the way the election went across the country, this was as much as we could expect though naturally we hoped for a great deal more.” Social Crediter Jean-Paul Leduc slipped from a second- place finish in 1972 to third position.Arthur Brown, after a non-existent campaign, collected 1,356 token votes from NDP sympathizers and GERALD LANIEL Rhinocerous Party candidate Guy Fortier finished with a surprising 900 votes. In actual count the Tory candidate fared better than did Armand Miron who polled 7,140 votes in 1972.Cyr, with the count still incomplete drew 9,047 votes.M.P.Laniel led in most vote in Valleyfield. But even in Beauharnois, Laniel led by 33 votes: 1,473 to Cyr's 1,440.St.Anicet was another down grade for Cyr, with Laniel taking 404 votes to the Conservative candidate's 335.Laniel also took Maple Grove with 411 votes to Cyr’s 252.This was another area in which Cyr had hoped to do well. The Liberals swept through in Howick, Ormstown, Ste.Barbe, St.Stanislas, St.Louis de Gonzague, St.- Timothée, Melocheville, and Ste.Martine.Âs expected, Valleyfield voted decisively for Laniel, as did Huntingdon, although in the latter riding, the Conservatives made which by Quebec law governs the manufacture and sale of cider in the province.‘I'he amalgamation, which will be based on a pooling of interests, will see Lubec hold the majority of shares, based on the value of the total assets of each company and the share of the market which each holds. The latter figures show Lubec with 34 per cent while Cellier St.Bernard (including La Pommerie) has19 per cent. Both firms will continue to manufacture cider under their own brand names at their respective locations in St.Antoine Abbé and Hem- mingford. But all bottling will be done at Lubec’s St.Antoine plant. The administration of the companies will also be unified. When the fusion is accomplished, only eight cider manufacturing plants will remain in the province of the 10 which started weather prior to the past weekend had many farmers wondering just how and when they'd ever get their haying done.Maybe the weatherman took a Bromo?ONE THING IS FOR SURE - new automobile drivers who have taken driver education courses are much better than those who haven't availed themselves of that instruction. And much, much better than most of us older folks who have been driving in a manner that just came natural.Too many of us have been practicing bad habits at the wheel most of our lives. The young generation who have been taught proper driving show us up all the time. They observe all traffic regulations such as slowing to 30 m.p.h.in towns and villages and they even stop at all railroad crossings in the same manner that school and provincial buses do.Driver ed is most commendable and will probably result in fewer fatal highway accidents than all the slogans and safety campaigns ever thought of.AND TALKING ABOUT DRIVING - people in Our town better wise up to the fact that laws aren't made to be broken.Chief Joffre L‘ Heureux has advised his men to issue tickets to all traffic offenders.During the past week just about 100 tickets for offences varying from improper members and volunteers and have been numbered. At any time during the vear, this flooring can be laid [even over the ice ] in a minimum of time which means that the Arena is now more versatile.President Mervyn Graham states that the flooring will be ready for the Fair and afterwards it can be used by any organization. This is a generous gesture on the part of the Fair Board and one which will be greatly appreciated by all in the years to come.TALKING ABOT THE FAIR - the *74 show should be the best ever- and the new flooring for the arena just about guarantees a fine show with fun for all age groups.Actually.Huntingdon Fair could really be renamed Old Home Week.it’s when everyone comes back to the old home town to visit. The earlier dates this year plus much Monday.Welcome back.Of all the political parties the New Democrats most wanted the election and they were the most hurt when Canadians made clear their preference for majority rather than minority government.Ontario, reportedly the true-blue core of the Tories, provided the election surprise with its big and perhaps vnexpected Liberal vote. The West, as anticipated gave the Liberals the back of their hand. This means, as Judy LaMarsh remarked, the westerners can now hate Central Canada en bloc, not just Quebec.Safety.And Aaron Churchill The tragic and needless death of Aaron Churchill, respected, longtime farmer of Hemmingford in a “tractor accident last week underlines the need for eternal vigilance for safety on the farm. How many times had Aaron Churchill climbed on and off his tractor? Many thousands of times at least. And then came the final and fatal time when his jacket caught on a wheel and he was run over and killed. He will be sorely missed in The Valley and particularly in Hem- mingford where he was a driving force in so many community endeavors including the forthcoming Apple Festival. He was a part of one of Canada's leading industry - agriculture - which employs some 500,000 workers. With the increased use of power equipment, commercial fertilizers, weed killers and in- Since there really was little choice between Liberal and the Conservative offerings the vote reflects the main concern of Canadians: A desire for stable government.Prime Minister Trudeau now has the chance to take his place among the nation’s greats.Fortunately, the national result being what it was, The Chateauguay Valley returned Gerald Laniel as Liberal representative for Beauharnois Salaberry, Liberal lan Watson in Laprairie and Liberal Walter Smith in industrial workers.Perhaps more so.However where the industrial worker is subject to comprehensive safety laws and coordinated accident prevention programs, in most cases the farmer is not.Consequently the fatality and injury rates in rural Canada are markedly higher than the national average due in good measure to the urgency with which farm tasks are done.It is so easy in the hurry of a given moment at a given job to make that one small safety slip.Asis happens July 25-31 has been designated Farm Safety Week by Agriculture Canada and the Canada Safety Council.A great idea, tinged locally by sadness that Aaron Churchill died as he did.Noise pollution Quebec is about to move in an area too long neglected - the big motorcycle and noise. For a lot of people who don't own motorcycles but have to listen to them shattering the normal quiet of a country village - Ormstown is an example - this is good news. Why motorcyclists should enjoy a privilege not granted motorists is hard to understand. Most motorcyclists are young and swept up in the feeling of power engendered by the thunder of a revved- up engine, whether it is inconsiderate of others or not.On the other hand, how many motorists have lost a muffler after spring has been at work on our roads and then been flagged down by the QPP and given 48 hours to get a new muffler and cut down on noise? With some justification they might claim as much right to noise up the environment as any motorcyclist. As presented at Quebec last week the new legislation will decree that full-sized motorcycles failing to comply with noise regulations will not be registered for licence.Let's hope the regulations are stiff enough that something really positive will result.July 1, country style Too bad a representative of the Canada Committee could not have been at Athelstan on the night of July 1 when that community celebrated the country's birthday. It was enough to stir the heart. The Ormstown Band played. The volunteer firemen lit a big bonfire. Then they supervised an hour- long fireworks display. And through it all 1,000 neighbors, young and old, who Pi hadn't much chance to chat in the heavy pressure of spring farm work did exactly that. The Athelstan Community Sports Association sponsored the affair Correspondent which Gleaner Janet Grant described as a ‘good, old-fashioned get-together.’ truly, Alex Mullen Editor, The Gleaner Sir: I DARE you to publish this in your Letters to the Editor columns in next week’s Gleaner.I have never’ been so vexed by any write up quite like that appearing on the front page of your Gleaner dated July 3 concerning the harrowing experience of one of our custom'’s officers at Covey Hill.First, your correspondent has taken the liberty of well advertising the said custom officer's name not once but in a total of SIX different places in that write-up.At the same time the names of those who jumped the border and tied up said officer are, and I repeat most emphatically, according to police withholding ‘‘the names of the men’’ detained.Second, your correspondent is certainly not taking into consideration the risk to the family concerned. They have recipients of ‘‘strange phone calls” since this event occurred, not only of a threatening nature but causing panic to the wife and children of the officer. While it may be newsworthy and sen- been sational to splash names and details all over your front pages I do not feel that the safety of the officer’s person in the future is too well assured when - Howick: Mrs.James Crawford Mrs.Florence Fisk of Ottawa spent about a week with her brother, Norman Tebby, and Miss Flora Currie, who enjoyed her visit.Mr.and Mrs.Ian Bustard from Hamilton spent the holiday weekend with Mr.and Mrs.John Bustard.Miss Helen Bustard of Montreal was a guest at the same home.Mrs.Hazel Robertson and her sister Mrs.Willa Hooker attended a tea at a retired teacher's home, Cowansville on June 26.A great place to meet old friends.Sympathy is extended to three families in the community who suffered a bereavement during the past week: Mr.and Mrs.Bill Brown in the death of Mr.Brown's sister, Miss Margaret Brown, of Decarie Manor, Montreal, after a brief illness.Mrs.Stephanie Everitt, husband Bob and family, whose father, Mr.Bruce, died after several years of declining health.Mrs.Hormidas Deschamps and family in the death of Mr.Deschamp after several years of poor health.MRS.EVELINA TREMBLAY Mrs.Evelina Tremblay , who lived most of her life in Franklin Centre, died recently at the Manoir Parisien Nursing Home in Cornwall. She had suffered a long illness. The former Evelina Woods of Churubosco, N.Y.she was the beloved wife of Octave Tremblay who predeceased her in 1933.She was admired for her courage after the death of the guilty party learns his name, his whereabouts and then their eventual release after any court trial.Would it not have been better and far wiser to have hushed this - if not your correspondent or your own printing firm , at least the immediate custom superiors and the Federal government? The officer was tied up, freed himself and got word to those who needed to know.Splashing his name in six places in that account is as good a way as I know to lead to reprisals by the eventually-freed culprits.Yours most sincerely Arnold McNaughton.P.S.I will be extremely curious to pick up next week’s Gleaner to see if you really do print this letter. While the guilty have been well protected the innocent have as much, if not more right to protection too and this means keeping quiet about naming this officer or any other officer in the future.A.McN.Editor's note: Mr.McNaughton, there's your letter and a good one too though the ‘’dare’’ part of it wasn't too disturbing. From the editor's chair it appeared Gleaner Correspondent Aileen I'Esperance in Hem- mingford did a nice, tidy job on a tricky sort of story. It should be said that Customs Officer Greer and his superiors along with police were the sources of the story; also that in the interests of continued police work on this case The Gleaner, at the request of authorities withheld considerable pertinent detail which will come out in due course.Health unit The Chateauguay Huntingdon Mobile Health Unit
