to mark the 150th anniversary of the Incorporation of the Village of Huntingdon. The anniversary recently was drawn to the attention of Council and of The Gleaner in a letter from Robert McGee, editor of the Journal of the Chateauguay Valley Historical Society.Mayor Claude Pilon said he planned shortly to contact representatives of various service clubs and groups in Huntingdon, members of the clergy and so on and see about forming a committee which could undertake active planning for the anniversary festivities. At this time, as the mayor pointed out.there is little data on hand about Huntingdon's incorporation as a village and any data whatever that may be in possession of people, perhaps put away among family treasures, would be a great help.“Anyway,” said Alderman Quebec agriculture department announced this week a federal-provincial subsidy of 13 cents a pound for cow-calf beef producers of the Chateauguay Valley who winter a minimum of 20 cows.It covers the winter of 1974- 75.Involved are farmers in the area of Chateauguay, Hem- mingford, Ormstown, Ste Barbe.St.Anicet.St.Stanislas, Godmanchester.Hinchinbrooke, Dundee, Elgin and Huntingdon, the whole area of Quebec Agriculture District 7.The manner of figuring this federal-provincial subsidy is to take 70 per cent of a beef herd as a basis. This, in the case of a 20-cow minimum, means 14 calves which for subsidy purposes are considered at 400 pounds each.Rabies on rise Innoculation clinic may be set up in area The officially confirmed deaths from rabies of 12 cattle in the Huntingdon area during October may mean establishment of a federal government temporary clinic in the area to help farmers immunize their animals.“There should be a decision on this within a week or 10 days ,”” Dr.Pierre Brisson of the federal government animal health branch in Huntingdon, told The Gleaner this week. The area of immediate concern: Huntingdon and the Ridge Road country; Athelstan and Elgin, Cazaville, and St.Anicet.The outbreak showed a sharp increase in October.Dr.Brisson said this was not considered unusual once rabies has appeared in an area. The great antidote is cold weather during which ailing wild animals carrying rabies are unable to survive as a rule.19 cattle Through July, August, September, October, 19 cattle are known to have died in the area from rabies. In the same period, said Dr.Brisson, his records show seven rabid foxes killed, one rabid skunk and one rabid dog. There may have been more.Dr.Brisson emphasized his figures are strictly based on laboratory or olinical examination of the dead animals’ brains, a test which leaves no doubt that rabies was the cause of death. The recorded progressive rabies death toll in the area was: July-one fox, one bovine; August 1 fox, ‘bovine, Sep - tember-three foxes, one skunk, five bovines; October - on dog.two foxes 12 bovines.Meantime The Gleaner has had several calls from farm residents not quite sure of what they should be on the lookout for in animal behavior at a time when rabies is a threat. The following is from a pamphlet available at Dr.Brisson’s office at the Federal Building Huntingdon: Infectious Rabies is an infectious disease caused by a virus that affects the nervous system of all warm-blooded animals, including livestock and man.It is usually spread by the bite of a rabid animal.Infection can result if the saliva, blood, milk or any other body fluid of an infected animal enters a cut or scratch, Animals that bite, such as ths skunk, fox.wolf, coyote, cat and dog, are the most active RER FARR gp een In turn this means that a farmer qualifying at the minimum level would have 5.600 pounds of calves eligible tor a subsidy ot 13 cents a pound. Thus in this case the total subsidy would be $728.Still excluded A Quebec government agriculture department source told The Gleaner that this federal-provincial subsidy is quite unconnected with E.Ness near Howick. He is Paul Gosdil of Petworth in Sussex, Eng., here to gain practical farming experience before entering an agricultural college in England.Paul arrived at Terrace Bank Farm on Hallowe'en, a fall festival about which little is known in the English countryside, but it meant he was on hand for week-end visits by Larry Ness who is a student at Kemptville Agricultural College and neighbor Mark Templeton.Paul is a considerably travelled young man, curious about Canada after having visited Israel, Spain and France.Experience sought He graduated from the high school system in Sussex but before entering an agricultural college there a requirement is that he must have farming experience away from the farm home.Hence his trip to Canada, but it wasn't easy. Here’s how it came about._ A friend of his family, a Mrs.Hawes who was visiting her daughter in Chateauguay, was asked to make enquiries on behalf of Paul. She began with the Presbyterian minister in Chateauguay who in turn asked the Rev.Alex MacDonald of Georgetown whose wife spoke to Robert Ness. Finally a telephone call from England to Ness completed the plans for Paul to come to Terrace Bank Farm and do his learning while son Larry Ness is away at Kemptville.A work permit had to be obtained for Paul, a bright young chap who will see and learn all he can while on this visit which one would think could have been easily arranged through government channels. That it wasn’t gives rise to the thought that many more Hresbÿterian mihisters such as the Rev.MacDonald and more United Church farmers such common- everybody talks about it, everybody says something must be done but nobody does anything. This applies from governments at every level right on down to the little guy who each time out pays more than he did before for any given article and has to run to stay standing still in the income-outgo picture.Prime Minister Trudeau met with provincial premiers last week. The subject: Inflation and what to do about it.The conclusion: Nothing drastic to be done at this time. It’s an open question where this except that it's getting more and more apparent that the western world 18 getting more and more bankrupt in governmental leadership or else the inflation question is just beyond solution.Canadians are told they are not nearly as badly off as other nations. This is factual, true enough, and for this we can be thankful. It offers some slender comfort if not much in the way of happy augury for the future. The economists who compare the buying power of today’s dollar with that of several years ago indicate that there may come a time before too long when here in the Chateauguay Valley we'll have to load a wheel barrow with dollars [always provided we can make the dollars] to go to the store for a pair of shoes. The operative phrase there is: Always provided we can make the dollars. With the cost of things it's hard to say that these are good times. But generally speaking our impressive standard of living has been little hurt so it's hard to call these really bad times.Certainly more people than ever before have more money than ever before which is the reason the economists talk about the actuality of running to stand still.Labor leaders insist that wage demands are moderate. They claim the real pressure on wages is from rising prices.Rising prices demand rising wages if people are to keep buying and maintain economic momentum [or which came first, the chicken or the egg?l.But if the little man, able to run and stay standing still, is not suffering too much in his standard of living.neither are the big corporations.Their profit statements for the various segments of 1974 invariably show astonishing gains even as their increased costs are passed on to the consumer.Again this is part of the standing still bit occasioning some wonder as to whether the fat cats really need always to ‘‘rip off’ quite so much.It seems to be a matter of where do you sit and how badly are you caught in inflation’s pressure cooker whether you call these days good times or bad.Remembrance Poppies are being worn by millions of Canadians during the lead-up to Sunday's observance of Remembrance Day.and they carry the message of the Royal Canadian Legion to remember.to think.and to participate. It is a message for all Canadians whether they are too young to remember the two world wars or not.Basically the Remembrance Day Poppy’s message is one of freedom.Freedom is no headlong flight from responsibility but rather is a reminder that we are the inheritors of a rich and beautiful country for whom many died.Freedom commands that one and all respect the dignity of man.It reminds us too of the need to develop a sense of responsibility; to seek change without destroying the system. So, during Remembrance Week, if you can’t remember war, think of peace and participate by wearing a poppy, the symbol of peace and future.Incidentally the first of these poppies were made by women and children in the devastated areas of France after World War I and were sold as emblem of remembrance on Armistice Day in Britain for the first time in 192].The British Legion had been persuaded to adopt the poppy by a French woman, Madame Guerin. She also visited Canada to meet with World War 1 veterans and the following year the Remembrance Day poppy was distributed in Canada for the first time, made in disabled veterans’ workshops.Letters to the Editor The political hoodwink - it just grows worse Ormstown, Oct.27,1974 The Editor, The Gleaner.Dear Sir: Being consistently and constantly reminded of the public acceptance of the double entendre in some of the most essential standards of life, I am amazed not only by its continuance but also of its increasing depth.By the use of semantics and modern jargon with special effects on the pertinent acceptable excuses for any crime known.the onus of guilt can be neutered as long as there exists any real or stimulated political overtones.Any conditional acquiescence to the ensuing incidents is surely a form of prostitution to practically every known and respected ethic of man.Terrorism.kidnapping, armed violence can demand and receive special consideration and exemption.Terrorists can demand and receive the free use of publicly owned vehicles to transport these dastardly criminals to any spot in the world they choose.travelling first class for free, as long as they can claim a semblance of political overtone for their illegal and disgusting actions.Excused Rebellion, riot, combined with brutal attacks on police personnel are excused with light reprimand if effected on a political holiday such as St.Jean Baptiste day merely because perpetrators of premeditated disturbance claim political aftiliation.Defiance of the law with more destruction of public andprivate property, brutal and grievous assault are committed in the presence of the police, but because this is associated with unionism, the police are forced to avert their eyes.Suddenly these become offences punishable bylaw. How long are we to be hypocrits so cowardly as to accept that through the medium of glib words and chameleon association, these obnoxious acts can be nullified. From rape by the so-called mentally disturbed down the list, every indignity that can be heaped onman, woman and child continues with seeming impunity.Al present At present we are presently experiencing some of this indignity, modified but still unsatisfactory to the thinking person, thrust upon us by some of the portfolio ministers that took the oath to represent the people in general and their constituents in particular.I find it hard swallowing when Health Minister Lalonde appears on television to offer some excuses about the high cost of milk.In this province where whole milk should be plentiful to everyone, Lalonde deadpans the camera and expects the public to accept not only the facts that all commercial milk is watered and skimmed down, that table cream will hardly color the coffee, the whipping cream needs more than elbow grease to solidify.but should be thankful for the opportunity to have access to powdered milk.Skimmed Water He calmly states before the T.V.camera that he and his family have personally used powdered milk for the evident economic reason and find it tasty and acceptable. One would have to wonder immediately that if a cabinet minister earning in excess of $25.000 a year was forced to use powdered milk.what happens to the poor fuddle duddler that earns $ 6,000 per or less.Possibly his fare is skimmed water.Recently there was a documentary shown on the government owned T.V.station, proving beyond any reasonable doubt, that filth, obnoxious bacteria existed in commercial raw and prepared hamburger.Several well known and widely patronised hamburger joints were named and identified that their hamburger contained such desirable elements as pieces of finger nail, hair.rodent filth, human feces, erc.etc.When faced with the fact that hamburger was without any government inspection or supervision, our friend Lalonde comments that if it is well cooked it poses no health problem.Surely Mare must know that if he says in effect ‘Mange la Merde’ this has to include Canadians and Quebecers of both and all cultures. If nothing else one would have to consider the depth of nerve involved.Ken Story.Bill 22 exemplifies "merciless power’ St.Bernard de Lacolle, Oct.29, Editor. The Gleaner, Huntingdon, Quebec.Dear Sir.Bill 22.If daughter Marie-Anne by FLORENCE A surprise birthday party was held at Howick Curling Club on the evening of Nov.3 for two well known and highly respected senior citizens of Howick.Napoleon Parent born Nov.6.1880 and his daughter Marie Anne, a Montreal school teacher who retired not long ago.She lives with her father and her birth date is Nov.5 The two guests of honor, knew there would be a small family party at one of the homes.had no idea the 1974 party would include the children, nine sons and daughers, the grand and great grandchildren.all the husbands, wives and sweethearts among the younger set.Father Downs came from Valleyfield where he has retired, and spent the evening with his old friend and faithful and talented choirmaster during the many vears he was the parish priest.Father Amyot was there also. Both were happy to be with the Parent family.Gerald Lalonde, Valleyfield acted as Master of Ceremonies and supplied background music and lively music for dancing.Gifts and speeches The presentation of gifts and speeches preceded a banquet which was served at 6 p.m.by a caterer from St.Martine.Marie Anne was happy to receive a corsage from one of the little ones.a bouquet of red roses and a handsome chair for reclining, from all the guests.Marie Anne knew about her fathers gifts but was surprised and moved by these expressions of love from her family. She found it hard to thank them.Parent, whose given name is Arthur even though everyone calls him Nap, was surprised when he was taken to the curling club and saw all his family and the special guests.Mr and Mrs.Paul Parent.Léo and his wife from Howick, Mr.and Mrs.Rene Parent from Verdun and Mr.and Mrs.Louis Parent from Hun- tingdon, Jeanne Biron, from Ormstown, Cecile Belanger and her husband Mario from St.Eustache, Rose and Roy Urquhart, Chateauguay, Alice and Armand Choquet, Montreal and Marie Anne who lives with him.Others in the next generation drove in from Plantagenet, Ont., Valleyfield, Montreal, Huntingdon, Ormstown Graduation BRENDA WILLOUGHBY Brenda Elaine Willough- by, daughter of Murray Willoughby of California, and Mrs.Mona Willoughby of Ormstown.sister of Robert Willoughby (Bob) and sister of Mrs.James Rayfield, iBonnie).Brenda graduated from Acadia University Wolf- ville, N.S.on May 6 1974 in the school of Home Economics with the Degree of Bachelor of Science in Home Economics, after four years of study.Brenda has returned to Acadia University this year for her fifth year to take a degree in Education, and plans to continue on for her Masters Degree in Home Economics.CRAWFORD and the home district.Individual gifts and personal greetings were given by his sons and daughters.Past recalled Father Downs and Father Amyot spoke of past and present experiences with their much- loved friend Nap, who was choir master at the parish church for more than 50 years and took part in other church activities - such as the present Bean Bag League.Mr.Parent has led a varied and active life which kept him in touch with many people over a large section of country. The Parents had a livery stable many years ago which Nap took over eventually. When the railroad passed this way in the mid 1880's salesmen were driven from Howick Station to St.Chrysostome as well as regular passengers.Young Nap took a hand in this work.Sandy Bryson called on him to assist at auction sales, until he decided to save his nice tenor voice for the choir work he loved so much.Early taxi When cars came in he taxied people here and there and continued to do this until recently. While horses were used and later cars, he had a mail route, {Tullochgorum.Fertile Creek) which he covered faithfully every day.He didn’t worry about security he just kept on finding work to suit the times and appeared to enjoy every minute of all those years. His wife was with him for 63 years and now his daughter Marie Anne and the other children help to give him a good life.Somewhere back in the days of the horse.Nap helped David Hay as an undertaker and later did the same for Mr.Robertson.That means he must have nipped up those stairs in between times to the choir loft to sing at the parish funerals. Was there ever a dull moment?Great meal No doubt he was thinking about some of these things when about 60 guests gathered around the banquet table for a splendid meal of hot turkey with all the trimmings.Apple pie, sugar pie.ice cream and other sweets were served as dessert.beautiful flowers decorated the tables and one large birthday cake in the centre, marked the double- anniversary event. In recent years cards were favored as entertainment at the samll family birthday parties for Mr.Parent and his daughter.Mr.Lalonde’s Regional board pull strenuously backward and forward if tied up; rush about wildly and leap into the air if loose; stamp their feet and switch their tails; shake their heads violently; bit e viciously at any object or animal within reach, sometimes biting the manger and injuring their mouths, Between these violent outbursts there may be periods of calm in which they stand quietly with head slightly raised.Twitching of the muscles of the ears, skin and tail, accompanied by frequent blinking of the eyelids, may be noticed. At times cattle may be restless and kick at their abdomen.Sexual desire may be increased and they will‘ride’’ other cattle.A strong and often persistent desire to lick objects is present. There is an abundant flow of saliva. The animals do not eat and as a result become very weak and thin.Paralysis Following this stage, paralysis sets in, affecting the hindquarters first.Soon the cattle are unable to rise. They may become unconscious and die rapidly, or struggle for a few days before dying. In some cases of rabies, the excitement stage is absent or very short and goes unnoticed and only the paralytic stage is seen.Cattle usually stay away from the rest of the herd, are dull, yawn a good deal, shift their feet and knuckle at the fetlocks; and their face and neck muscles twitch. They may strain considerably and arch their back, urinate frequently, smack their lips and grind their teeth.Milk production drops suddenly, salivation is excessive and rumination ceases, causing bloating.Horses Symptoms of rabies in horses are similar to those from page 1 described for cattle. In the initial stage of excitement horses stand with their ears erect, quite alert and their eyes have a glassy stare.Their muscles often twitch and their eyes move quickly back and forth.Horses with rabies may get up and lie down frequently, roll and shake their head. The site of the bite may be intensely irritated and they will lick and frequently chew it viciously.Violent spasms, which may be brought on by a noise, are common.Horses kick, rush and bite savagely at the manger, burying their teeth in the wood and sometimes breaking them.Later they may smash their stall to pieces and escape from the barn., Leu rhrsty … Saliva 110ws copiously and the horses are extremely thirsty, grind their teeth frequently, suddenly snort loudly, and have difficulty in swallowing, with the result that food returns through their nostrils. They begin to move stiffly and jerkily; become quite vicious, rushing at other animals and biting; become quite thin; and have tequent convulsions, during one of which they may die.In other cases, horses are dull and depressed. The symptoms seen in sheep are similar to those incattle.Swine affected with rabies frequently hide in bedding or other places and may, without any apparent reason.rush out in terror.their eyes quite brilliant.grunting and squealing loudly. They stop eating but will chew on wood and other objects.confine it away from people and other animals.Wear heavy gloves if you must handle a suspect animal, or an animal that may have just been bitten by a suspect animal.or objects which mav have saliva from a suspect animal on them.Do not put your hands or fingers in any animal's mouth if it appears to be choking.as you could expose yourself to rabies if you have cuts or scratches on your hands.THE GLEANER — NOVEMBER 6 1974 — 9 Pipe band will mark St.Andrew's night An annual event that was part of Valley's winter s entertainment season several vears ago.is to be revived this vear when the members of the Chateauguay Valley Highland Pipe band will again present a Scottish variety concert. The site: The auditorium of the Chateauguay Valley Regional High School at Ormstown.l'his_year however.on MIRACLE the hope of avoiding the extreme cold experienced un a couple of occasions, the concert will be held on St.Andrew's night Nov.3u instead of in January around the time of the birthday ot Robbie Burns.Band members are working on new medleys of tunes and combining some of the old favorites with new tunes.Of course piping and highland dancing will be featured, but in addition there will be songs of old Scotland, step dancing, a male quartet a new comedy duo, and tc round things out.a turn by our own Mac Ruddock of Dewittville without whom no Scottish concert in the Valley would be complete.Tickets are available from all band members.and also at Thompson's Shop in Huntingdon, and Fearn's Variety Store in Ormstown and Ruddock's in Dewittville.BULK DAIRY FEEDS WE HAVE A COMPLETE LINE OF QUALITY DAIRY FEEDS AT COMPETITIVE PRICES 2 BULK TRUCKS TO SERVE YOU PHONE: 829-2255 or 2288 D.& M.HOOKER LTD.ORMSTOWN, QUE.Grant City ROUTE 11, MALONE, N.Y.HOMEMAKER "74200 HELPER! ~~ (a) Le 2 ) JUST ADD IT TO MONEY A 10% BONUS CHECK WILL BE YOURS WHEN YOU PURCHASE A TOTAL OF $10 OR MORE IN MERCHANDISE FROM MONDAY, NOV.4 THRU SATURDAY, NOV.9 Save your sales slips from Grant City. When they total $1 0 or more, bring them in, pick up your 10° Bonus Check Select any merchandise in our store .use your 10%.Bonus Check in full or partial payment from NOV.4 thru NOV.16 Instant Money — Just When You Need It Most! From everyone's standpoint the annual Bazaar was a success nd especially su to the members who looked upon the large crowds as tangible proof of community support for their efforts during the past year.It was a great afternoon .or socializing. Many new friends were made over tea and old scquaintances renewed around the sale tables. It was a long and tiring afternoon for many of the members but they wouldn't have missed all that visiting for the world! Thank You There are many people whom I am sure the members would wish me to thank.Their drivers, for instance.who put themselves at the disposal of their passengers for the afternoon so that they could stay at the sale as long as they cared to.The volunteers who so capably handled the organization of the bazaar on their behalf. The men and women of the community who asked to serve in whatever areas they were needed. And especially all those who came from near and far despite the rain to encourage the Centre in Its ndeavors. The quilting group was the Centre of attraction in ‘he tea room.Anyone who stopped to admire the ‘log cabin” quilt could not helpbut appreciate the long hours of work that go into a veautiful quilt such as that me.Winning ticket One of the quilters, Mrs.Beatrice Paul, drew the winning raffle ticket at the close of the day and the lucky winner of the crocheted afghan was a new-comer to Hun- tingdon.Mrs.Ruth Stringer of the Boyd bdettlement Road. Now that the Bazaar is over for another year does not mean that the Centre is going to settle down into a hum-drum routine.Far from it! Two very special projects have been planned for you this month. On Wednesday Nov.13 Mrs.Marion Leboeuf a member of the Hun- tingdon Wornen's Institute and well known for her talent in crafts, will be giving a demonstration of a tew of her unusual crattl ideas.Anyone who is interested in the unusual or who may have a person on their gift list who ‘has absolutely everything ’ could find ideas from watching Mrs.Leboeuf at work.Drop by and meet her.Her tables will be set up close to the front entrance ot the Legion Hall The second special project is something quite old and something quite new.at least for the Centre. Its success will depend solely on the interest shown by a certain segment of our community and you may find yourself a part of it.Have you ever wanted to quilt but have been shy about joining a group of experienced ladies around a frame because you know that you couldn't begin to sew as beautifully as they can?Do have two or three hours to spare on Wednesday afternoons now that vour children are all in school or your other obligationg are finished? If so, then you may help to form the nucleous of a new quilting group at the Centre. Two of our most experienced quilters have volunteered to teach the , fine art of quilting to anyone who has never done it before or who has tried and been frustrated in her attempts. There is no need to feel shy or embarrassed with this new group as everyone in it will be in the same boat as you are.Quilters needed The quilt topis ready, all we need are the quilters. To begin we need four women and that is really a minimum.Fewer working around a frame can make a quilt top look as big as an ocean to a new quilter. The ‘more the merrier” seems to be the motto of the senior group and with a larger number working.progress on the quilt is fast, eliminating that feeling of “we'll never get this thing done.” So why not bring a friend along with you to the class or better yet, make up a group of your own and come together to the Centre? It could be a lot of fun.If you are interested, it is important for you to call me at 264-3492 or Miss Alice Rennie at 264-5851.You can alsodrop by the Legion Hali on Wednesday afternoon and ask to see either one of us.We will be pleased to talk about this special.old but new, project with you.Christmas 1s coming.Bring your gift ideas to the Centre and we will be happy to help you create something distinctively yours.Until next week, have a happy time and we'll see you at the Centre, Everyone is welcome. Les compteurs pour Olympic furent: Wayne McDowell avec 2 buts; Hans Bulow, 1 but; Ronny Tremblay, le capitaine, 1 but; Gerry Lennox, 1 but, Gérald Gaudet, 1 but.
