[" Robberies spark Valley-wide police alert Road blocks, spot checks unannounced \u201cby ALAN RANDAL of The Gleaner Quebec Provincial Police in the last few days mounted increased vigilance across the Chateauguay Valley, instituting spot road checks and even periodic road blocks in some places, in the wake of robberies and break-ins reported from Howick, Sherrington, Hem- mingford and Franklin Centre.Commenting on spot road checks, a police spokesman at Ste.Martine told The Gleaner it was a combined police operation through the Valley involving some 75 police agents in cars in an effort to track down those responsible for recent robberies.Known victims: The W.B.Smith store in Hem- .mingford; Sharpe\u2019s General Store operated by Mr.and Mrs.Harold McCracken in Franklin Centre, and the Cooperative Store in Sherrington.The increased police vigilance gave rise to reports that it was occasioned by an alert to all border points to be on the lookout for kidnapped Hearst newspaper heiress Patty Hearst who might be trying to gain entry into Canada.Police at Lacolle told The Gleaner that border detachments about three weeks ago had been asked by the R.C.M.- P.to increase their alert, with Miss Hearst in mind, but that no sign of the wanted woman turned up.H'ford accident Impaired charge One border police source noted that all customs and immigration points have the young woman's wanted posted up and are continually on the watch.However, on the occasion in question, at the R.C.M.P.request, a special check was placed on normally unmanned border roads leading from the Chateauguay Valley to the U.S.The Ste-Martine division of the QPP gave increased attention to the Howick area where in recent weeks several house robberies have been reported while their occupants were away.$1,900 loss | Biggest loser was the Smith Store at Hemmingford.There Gerald Smith, son of the proprietor, told The Gleaner he placed losses at upwards of $1,900 in stolen watches, radios, color TV sets, guns and other articles.He placed the time of the robbery at about 4:30 a.m.on the morning of Sunday, Feb.9 because at that time a neighbor later reported hearing noise at the store.Lacolle police, who investigated, said they had a report that an attempt to enter the co-op store at Sherrington (continued on page 9) facing Hebert A charge of impaired driving has been laid against Jean- Paul Hebert of Greenfield Park by the Lacolle Division of Quebec Provincial Police.Agent Ron Tougas of the Syrup producers to meet A meeting of maple syrup producers is to be held at Franklin Elementary School Thursday, Feb.27 at 8.15 p.m.under the sponsorship of the Quebec agriculture department at which production and marketing will be discussed.Prof.Denis Desilets of Laval University will discuss the application of the vacuum system to individual maple syrup operations.and marketing will be dealt with by Jean-Pierre Potvin from the agriculture department in Quebec.All operators of woodlots or anyone interested in maple syrup production are welcome at the meeting.Lacolle office told The Gleaner this week that the charge had been laid with the Crown Prosecutor of the Valleyfield District following one Nov.23 accident near Hemmingford in which six young people were killed in a two-car crash.Hebert, driver of the second car, emerged from the crash with only minor injuries.Police reports show that Hebert\u2019s blood had an alcohol content of .13 at the time of the accident, well above the legal safe driving limit of .08.Agent Tougas said that the impaired driving charge had been sent to the Valleyfield office of the Crown Prosecutor some time before the Coroner\u2019s inquest into the accident, held in January.Meanwhiie, Hebert has been driving his car, because, Agent Tougas said, he cannot be prevented by law from doing so until the case comes to court.If convicted, Hebert would face a fine of up to $5,000 and a possible lengthy suspension of snowmobilers here Big time snowmobile racing is coming to Huntingdon on Sunday even if snow has to be imported.That's the latest word from the organizers of Huntingdon\u2019s participation through the Optimist Club in Super Circuit Mark Ten snowmobile competition at the Fair Grounds race track.\u201cIf we have to bring in snow we'll do it; the snowmobile racing will go on as scheduled.\u201d said one organizer in the wake of the warm weekend temperatures which played havoc with what snow is left in the area.Big-name snowmobile racers will be here to compete for $4,500 in prizes in the one- day High School won the Quebec Schoolboy Curling Championships at the weekend and Sunday night received a rousing welcome \u2018\u2018home\u2019\u2019 when about 70 parents, friends and curling enthusiasts from Howick, Ormstown, and Valleyfield gathered at the Howick Curling Club to greet the team on its return from Val d'Or.The team: Skip Barry Ness of Howick, Steve Borland and Rick Gamble of Ormstown, and Rick Reddick of Valleyfield.Their victory Saturday at Val D'Or was the more remarkable because they returned home undefeated in the 10-game round-robin tournament.The same rink will team won the Southshore Championship on Saturday Feb.15, defeating Richelieu Valley in the final game 14-13 for C.V.R.For the CVR girls it was a clean sweep since they defeated all the teams in their section: CVR 34, Chambly County 6; C.V.R.38, C.F.B.10; and C.V.R.48, St.Johns 6.The C.V.R.performance was outstanding as a team.Shirley Buijs\u2019 excellent rebounding was an asset.Olga Jemzyck and elan.Government ripoff?More and more we are being told by politicians and by government agencies that there are \u2018rip-offs\u2019 at many levels in the business sector which tend to push up prices.This approach is essentially unhealthy in that it diverts attention from the real problem and the responsibility of government to pursue correct monetary and fiscal policies.One might even reverse the question and ask whether there is any possibility of the existence of a \u2018government rip-off.\u201d The point I want to make is that inflation.often defined as \u2018the result of that this one holds must have something unusual about.it.Research has revealed that its roots stem from two divergent theological patterns- \u201cArminiansim [belief in free will] and Calvinism [belief in predestination].It seems impossible that the two concepts could be merged into one religious faith, but this has been achieved.The United Church has been a crusading church.It has come by this honestly, for the zealous Methodist circuit riders were the forerunners, and the rolls of the churches are studded with trail blazers.The people of this church.are active in all phases of Canada life.A union between the Anglican and United Churches has been discussed formally since 1943.The outcome of these discussions has not yet been finalized but the United Church of Canada will move on from the present to the future, and there are exciting transformations coming.The United Church has already learned that denominations have outlived their usefulness, and the ecumenical church is for the future: a Rind of ecumenism in which people work together in their own 'ocal communities on the issues which Christians need to solve together without reference to denominational lines.There are new structures not yet formed for tomorrow's United Church.They are in the imagination of its people.Right now the imagination of United Church people is concentrating on ways in which the Fiftieth aircraft, unlike the four-legged variety, Quebec's two- legged wolves do fight back.Yet while our real wolves are being blamed and persecuted for the slaughter of our white-tails the province's poachers who are responsible for most of the damage go unblamed.**Not only are poachers taking game animals at a time of year when they need to be left alone, they are endangering the lives of people through the increased use of spring loaded snares, explosives and guns rigged to go off when an animal crosses the line of fire.In one known case north of Quebec City a helicopter is being used to kill moose, while another is reported to be involved in poaching activities in some of the deer yards north of Montreal.\u2018Snowmobiles, however, seem to be the favorite means of transportation in and out of the deer yards.lon wolves eating habits In some of the wintering areas such as Kiamika, Ste.Scholastique and Macaza shots are being heard almost every night.I find it strange that people living in the vicinity of the deer yards hear the rifle shots while the game wardens are deaf to them.\u201d Also, as a student of wolf lore for 30 years, I am especially interested in the eating birthday when about 60 relatives, friends and neighbors called during the afternoon and evening to wish her well.Hostesses were her daughters, Mrs.Harold Kerr, Mrs.Alvin Gruer ad Miss Mildred Hay.The tea table was presided over by Mrs.Anne Forrester and Mrs.Helen Taylor and was centered with a decorated cake, candles and bouquet of dark red roses,a gift from her immediate family.Mrs.Anderson was also presented with a corsage of white carnations.She received numerous phone calls, cards, gifts and flowers including a pretty dried flower arrangement from her fellow members of the Senior participated in a youth service at Georgetown.The service was taken by Junior Choir of Georgetown church under the direction of Mrs.Marian Anderson, with the focus entirely on youth.For the same day the Presbyteens organized a coasting party at Keith Chisholm\u2019s home.Nine members and two leaders met Jan.26 at Jean and Hugh Goodall\u2019s home when it was noted that summer vacations are only 10 meetings away which signals a busy time between now and then, As the group membership has increased so has the burden on the \u201cphone committee\u2019 and Peter Knight has volunteered to share the phone duties with Keith Chisholm.A get-well card was signed by the 'Teens for Rev.Macdonald and during the Prayer Round many good wishes and sincere prayers were sent his way for a speedy return lot of fun.Four young fellows from the curling club came along and played a challenge game versus the Seniors.Skip Ken McRae, Harold Roberton, Henry Welburn and Ken Nish, tied on the fourth end versus Pete Peddie, Irvin Orr, Bruce Cairncross and Gordon Hope.Then another three Seniors, Findlay Milne, Bill Husband and Mack- McIntyre with Gordon Hope played the next four ends but the counters hung nn the wall.However, they were the winners in the end.Harold Robertson had brought along four cute animal lawn ornaments which he presented to the losing team.The winners had to be satisfied with the club custom - no prizes at the meetings except the final day.Bill Husband presided at the social hour that followed.Valentine sandwiches were included among the delicious varieties that were served by
