[" OF Tel: ALL KINDS PRINTING [free estimates] THE GLEANER 264-5364 Jules Leger There is every indication that Governor-General Jules Léger will be in Huntingdon on Sunday, June 29, during the town’s 150th Anniversary celebrations. That date has been set aside as Municipal Day in | the week of observances and festivities for the Town of Huntingdon, as such, to put its best foot forward.Other days of the celebration period have been devoted to various representative groups of the town populace, everybody having been invited to help make each group's endeavor something special. At this point the visit of 112th YEAR HUNTINGDON, Que.Wednesday, April 30, 1975 the governor- -general is not official in the sense that the Town has not received formal notice of it in writing. But The Gleaner learned that a source recently in close touch with the governor-general had informed Mayor Claude Pilon that it is Mr.Léger’s intention to accept the invitation to attend. The governor-general, now being seen in public more and more after suffering a heart seizure in the Eastern Townships last fall, has a soft spot in his heart for the Huntingdon area having done The Gleaner this week.‘‘Anvone wishing to see the Musical Ride should reserve tickets early, because in the past when we have had the Mounties, tickets sold out extremely earlv.” Tickets will be on sale in the office on the grounds starting on May 1.In deference to weekend See FAIR Page 24 Deft thi by JUDY TAYLOR of The Gleaner Ormstown's projected Convalescent Home should more properly be called an Old People’s Home, or in a literal translation from the official language, a Reception Centre for the Elderly. This was made clear in an address by Huntingdon County M.N.A.Ken Fraser to the Women's Auxiliary of the Barrie Memorial Hospital at its General Meeting in Ormstown April 24.“Priority in the Ormstown Home willbe given to people with various handicaps, the bedridden and the soon-to-be bedridden, on the recommendation of the Social Services office,” he said. The Home's Provisory Committee under the chairmanship of Mrs.Albert Chabot is currently engaged in the submission to the Department of Social Affairs, of an updated report on the needs of the area’s elderly people.Negotiations are also under way to acquire one of two possible sites from the Barrie Memorial Hospital, and architects’ and engineers’ recommendations are also under consideration by the government.Meanwhile, public interest in the Home is running high, and many questions remain concerning its functions, some of which Fraser attempted to answer last week.He explained that elderly people in need of care are classified in various ways by et lifts $3,000 at IGA In the midst of the afternoon rush of last Saiwrday's provisions shopping Huntingdon’s IGA store was robbed of some $3,000 in cash.Without anybody on the store staff noticing anything unusual, the money was taken from the safe in the office of store owner Robert Plouffe, both the office and the safe having been left open. The thief or thieves left no trace behind.Investigation into the loss is under supervision of Sgt.Philippe Cardinal of the Huntingdon ‘Town Police. At the time of the theft the store was crowded with shoppers and there were lineups awaiting check-out at the cashier's counters. It would appear, police said, that the robbery might have been committed by a customer who, waiting in the cashiers’ lines, noticed the open office door and the open safe and simply walked in, scooped up the cash and then quietly made his way out of the store. The store's otfice is located by large freezer food lockers n the aisle which leads to the cashiers’ that the governor-general participate with us in our anniversary celebrations,” said Mayor Pilon, ‘‘and it is our understanding that he would like it to be a most informal appearance.” This would be typical of Mr.Léger, a dean of the Canadian diplomatic service before his appointment as representative of the Queen in Canada. On this basis, the indications from all, the 75-bed Anniversary Committee were that the visit would be planned more as a meet-your-governor - general type occasion than a formal affair with banquet, head table and so on.Just as soon as a formal answer to the Town's invitation has been received from Governor- General Léger, the Town Council will consider the detailed form Municipal Day proceedings will take. One suggestion was that quite possibly the populace could be given an opportunity to see and meet the governor-general at an outdoor gathering at some spot like the Fair Grounds.Ormstown Home is classified as a Centre d'Accueil. As such, it is neither a convalescent hospital nor a chronic care institution, as these are defined by the Department of Social Affairs.See HOME Page 3 Water plant work begins this week by CYRILALARY of The Gleaner Work is scheduled to begin this week on the third and final stage of Huntingdon's water improvement plan, the massive renovation and enlargement of the filter plant. It has been made possible by a Quebec government grant of $2,321,690.And with the decision within the last several days to award the contractto Sogerpro of Montreal, the Town Council hac embarked on the most expensive project it has every undertaken. The contract figure of $2,498,498 was the same as the company tendered on April 14, the Municipality had Dec.14 of last year.At a special council meeting Huntingdon project Summer Centre receives grant A group of six Huntingdon young people have come up with a project for children's summer activites, and have received a grant ot $6,300 from the Federal sports and excursions to the six-to-12 age group. And it won't cost the children anything. The idea was conceived by the six young people to provide an alternative tothe swimming pool, which with the decline of minor league baseball, has become almost the only summer activity for children.Involved are Jamie Henders on, a student of business administration and a former swimming pool attendant; trapped in an overturned car in several feet of water in a roadside ditch near St.Lazare early Sunday morning, April 20.With the aid ot another passer by who had flagged Donald down on old highway 17 to Ottawa, Racine pulled the man and woman to safety and then, with the passerby, saw them checked in to Valleyfield hospital for emergency treatment.“Who the passer-by was I don’t the woman in the back.“Finally the two of us got the tront door open.We had to © almost pry it open because 1 guess it was stuck in the mud under the water. Then we pulied the man out, I put my SINGLE COPY 20CENTS 02 - ~ - + On a TN us as Food-and the farmer Here in the Chateauguay Valley we stand on the threshold of a new growing season at a time when food is front and centre of the world Stage in relation to all the large questions that face our way of life.In these unparalleled inflationary times there is one thing that hasn't changed since the dawn of time: above all else man needs food. So, if ever the Canadian farmer, and particularly the farmer of the Chateauguay Valley, had stature and world importance,it is today. In return, as never before because food is such a vital world question, the farmer needs security and incentive. The need for this to be generally recognized, not just on the farm front but everywhere, was stressed by President Charles Munro at the recent annua! meeting of the Canadian Federation of Agriculture: ’ Said he, in part: ‘It is food that the billions of the world’s poor and hungry need and are desperately short of, and upon which all the populations of the world vitally depend.“It is food that must have a high priority in the calls made on our limited energy and other resour- “ces.“It is food that partly accidentally, has become the most prominent focus of current public concern about inflation.“and it is the farmer who produces the food.“Whether in developed or developing countries, this is what has to be remembered. If rational sense is to be made out of world domestic food pelicy, the farmer must be given the security dnd incentives required.“Farmers security is the key to food security. This was the message at our world farmers conference in Austria last spring. It is a message that must not be ignored.“It is, I am afriad, in danger of being ignored. At the World Food Conference called by the United Nations out of the recognition of the profound importance and priority of food in world affairs! am very much afraid that the essential connection betwen food security and farmer security was too little emphasied, and too little analyzed.“There are basic moral issues involved in the question of food security for the world’s peoples. These morai issues are what non- government people and many others e nphasized at the World Food Conference and rightly. But in much of the very legitimate idealism and concern that is expressed ! sense a great many peonle are inclined to set aside hard considerations of prices, profitability, stability and market outlets.” Yet these hard economic aspects cannot be ignored, whether you are talking about Canadian farmers or the poor peasants of Indonesia."The need for food is great.Yet there is no reason to believe we have seen the last of surplusses and the threat of depressed prices in commercial terms.“At home as well the question of food policy is very much to the fore.It is evident that food and the agriculture industry are now very much on the public's mind. The public is starting to take a proprietary interest in agriculture.“Some are saying, after all these years, that agriculture really shouldn’t be so much considered the farmers’ business-but much more the public's or the consumer's business. The so-called marketing board issue has become a symbol of this growing feeling.“I don't think we should react negatively to this.Food is important. The public should be interested and concerned. We don’t have anything to hide and with this kind of industry we have we couldn’t hide if if we tried.“Yet I would add too that food production is the farmers’ livelihood.“Farmers must have and hold a central role in the management of their own business; as does all other industry. They must be jealous of their rights. They must strengthen thei unity © and effectiveness, for if we don't” pay proper attention to our own business, someone else will pay attention for us.“It must be emphasized that the interests of the farmers and the consuming public are fundamentally mutual and not conflicting interests. Here at home, as on the world scene, farmer security is the key to food security. It is here the mutuality of interest lies.“The time has come to put in place an overall national policy and program for agricultural stability and income security. In broad terms this principle has been accepted by the Federal government as in the public and farmer interest.I think it is absolutely essential that in 1975, Canadian farmers move strongly, unitedly, and decisively to defining what they want, and taking steps to achieve it.” Starling’s spring message At this time of year there are all sorts of signs pointing to spring's renewal Jor the growing season.the maples budding.geese honking their way north.ducks making a pause on the Chateauguay River enroute to nesting grounds.and the spring song of the storling. In the latter there is a message from which we could all gain something. For most of the year the starling is as melodious as a rusty hinge. The common starling - Sturnus Vulgaris - is as unprepossessing as his name, with his dumpy appearance, messy nesting habits and his pushiness in competing with more desirable species. Then comes spring.Suddenly the starling becomes a singing star, lilting up and down the scale, tossing off effortless trills and cadenzas and entrancing the ear of all within range.Listen to him and you'll find sounds like a lark or a bluebird, even a sweet thrush. For courting purposes only he mimicks the lovely sounds of these birds and obviously with great effect when one considers the proliferation of starlings. The message? It's there in the spring-only song, the evidence that like so many of us, he could perform better day in and day out if only he wanted to.At Ormstown Plans for banquet laid The Presbyterian Evening aduit group ot Urmstown met in the church hail on Thursday April 24 with the president Ruth T'annanill conducting the meeting. She members of St.James’, St.John’s and Christ Church to complete and return the questionnaire on Church Union which they have recently received in the mail or picked up in church. This is an attempt to survey the opinion of members of the Anglican Church across Canada on continuing discussions toward organic union with the United Church of Canada and the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). The results of the survey are to be forwarded to General Synod when it meets in Quebec City this June.We often accuse the hierarchy of making decisions without consulting the grass roots, and here is an opportunity to make our views known on this important matter.Any parishioners who have completed questionnaires or would like to receive a copy can contact me at 264-3475.Yours sincerely, Brian Prideaux Rector of Huntingdon & Ormstown United world action would dispel hunger Ormstown April 29 The Editor The Gleaner Dear Sir: After reading Mr.Story's letter in The Gleaner of three weeks’ ago about Canada's Foreign Aid program and then Mr.Johnson’s of two weeks ago, I feel compelled to write.Although I do not disagree with everything written by these two gentlemen, I certainly do not agree with all of it either. Why is it that people always drag out the same old excuses whenever they do not want to help someone? We have our own poor and our own elderly, etc.It is always our country and our people who must be thought of first.Mr.Story wonders why the rich people in these troubled countries do not help their own destitute. Then he goes on to say that we have our own poor and elderly who are finding it difficult to manage.Obvious answer “Bol would ask why do our wealthy "not help the unfortunate ones in our midst? The answer is obvious- The rich, regardless of what country they live in, do not part with their wealth unless compelled to do so.It is the poor who help the poor, yes, even the “poor” taxpayer. He also mentions the white man who has this great burden on his back of feeding and helping the world’s hungry.Whe put it there?Isn't it true that in whatever country the white man has entered in times past, he has always exploited the native people. They have been kept in ignorance by their own rulers and politicians and even by their religious leaders.Wars have been fought for years in many of these places because of the greed of a few. Then we have the audacity to even wonder why they are not able to look after themselves. What is a gift? These two gentlemen even expect a return on a gift.! thought a gift was something that was given freely with no strings attached.Perhaps one of these days we will look in our cupboard and it will be bare. Then we may have more compassion for the millions of people who have had to do without one of life’s very essentials - food.Neither of these men offer any worth-while solution to the problem apart from letting nature take its course. As I understand, this suggests that the more of them who die off from starvation the better it will be for the rest of us.Mr.Johnson is of the opinion that by sending food to these starving people we are encouraging them to have more babies. This comes as quite a surprise to me.Since when have we been doing this? Are there instructions on the food packages telling them to eat up and reproduce? If so, then I do agree.Stop sending them food right away.Somehow, I though they were having these babies without any encouragement from us.World action Millions and millions of dollars have been poured into these countries with no apparent improvement in the lot of the masses. No one nation or two nations or three nations can solve the problems of humanity today. All the nations of the world must join and form a World Government.Impossible, yousay. As the conditions in the world worsen, more and more people will come to believe that this is the only road to survival.Under this sytem all national governments would blend themselves into one World Community that would deal only with world problems. Each nation or state would still have the freedom to keep its own individuality and to settle internal problems.A world Police Force would put an end to all wars.Long overdue World Government is not an idea that has come’ too soon but is long overdue.Attempts have been made in the past to form World Bodies but the participants have always been more interested in their own country’s welfare than in the world's thus rendering these bodies powerless. We can help to hasten the day or we can hinder it.But we cannot stop it.Think about it.Sincerely, Mrs.Cameron English Gleaner's parade picture recognized in Rockburn Rockburn April 27 The Editor The Gleaner Dear Sir: If memory serves me correctly the Page 2 picture in The Gleaner of April 23 is wrongly identified as being part of the parade along Chateauguay Street in Huntingdon’s 100th Anniversary" celebrations.Rather, this picture of a procession shows the head end of the last Orangemen's Day (July 12) Parade held in Huntingdon.I'm not sure of the year but it would be around the time of the 100th Anniversary of Huntingdon (1925).In the Gleaner picture the man riding the white mare as “King Billy” at the head of the Orangemen’s Parade (to the right of your picture) is James (Long Jim) McCartney of the Connaught road. There were few riding horses around Huntingdon in those days and this white mare was a cart horse. The horse immediately behind it is the saine horse you showed in a recent picture harnessed to a dump cart in which coal was being loaded at the railway station.I think it belonged to Georges Riel.Incidentally in the year following that in which your parade picture was taken, Hemmingford tco held its last Orangemen’s Day parade and Cantilo Ferns, also of the Connaught Road, rode the traditional white horse at the head of the procession on that occasion.Sincerely yous, Bentley [Joe] HORTICULTURAL NEWSLETTER Slow but sure, spring is coming back and it’s time to take care of our lawn if you want a green, lush carpet all summer long.A good lawn for a change One of the first garden chores is to put the lawn in order for the spring. So here is what to do as soon as you can get out into the garden.Rake: go over the whole lawn and rake out the dead grass and leaves.Fertilize: spread the fertilizer on right after raking. We recommend C.1.L.GOLFGREEN or C.|.L.EVERGREEN for the first shot, 10 to 20 pounds per 1000 square feet, If you prefer to use a mix weedkiller-fertilizer we recommend C.LLWEED & FEED.But remember that the ground must be warm enough if you want a good result with the weed killer. In that case apply C.I.L.WEED & FEED atter May 15th.Seed: over seed your lawn to thicken the turf.We have a tirst quality blend for nice lawn and one speical blend for shaded lawns.Top dress: lightly spread a fine covering of Peat-Moss over the whole area.Wet the Peat-Moss first by letting the hose run stowly into the centre of the bale.Roll: lightly roll the treated area.Do not use heavy rolier especially if the ground 1s wet.Otherwise the soil will harden like rock during the summer and your lawn will turn yellow.Water: keep your lawn well watered tor the balance of the year.Fenrtilize again on June 15th and at the end of August.Follow the above and | guarantee you the finest lawn on the street.Insects It is not too early to remind you about garden pests.| want to talk about spraying to keep the Birch leaves from curling up, the roses from getting loaded with black spot and aphids, the evergreens from becoming infested with spider mite.Almost every garden has a Birch tree in it and every year they get infested with short white worms that crawi between the leaf tissues and there, protected from sun, rain and poison spray.they relax and eat.Suddenly, the Birch teaf takes on a nice brown look but you can’t do a thing about it.Spray won't touch them once they are inside the leat tissues. This pest is call the Birch Leaf Miner.Today we have a systemic insecticide CYGON which replaces spraying and requires much less work. All you have to do is to take a brush and paint with CYGON a band 6 to 10 ins.wide all around the stem at 1 foot above the sqil level. The poison goes into the sap flow and kills the eggs and the young miners. This treatment must be done the first week of May.A second infestation takes place in summer but then you must spray the foliage with CYGON during the first week of July.Planting tips When you plant evergreens don’t take the burlap off the earth-balled plant.Just cut the burlap oft at the base of the plant.Always do that after you have partially tilled in around the ball with planting soil to avoid breaking the ball of earth, Prune tlowering shrubs and shade trees about one-third at time of planting. So you will have less foliage to be ted by a disturbed and often reduced root system. This is the best way to have success with your new planting.Bye for now, André Wart PLUMBING-HEATING-OIL BURNERS St-Anicet Garden-Centre 264-2983 .- WHERE YOU FIND EVER TEL: 264 3553 a ado HUNTINGDON _,., vr Pe and to elicit a response on the question of immigration from the general public.Guest speakers at the City Hall meeting were Robert Lefebvre(originally of Huntingdon) and Gilles Groulx.both of the Department of Manpower and Immigration. At the beginning of the meeting, it was made clear that any group wishing to submit a brief on the Green Paper, which is currently under study by a special Commons Committee, may approach that committee or their local M.P.Lefebvre explained that the Valleyfield meeting was one of a series of such encounters being held across the country, and that his intention was not to defend the contents of the Green Paper, but merely to explain it.The government hopes to introduce a new immigration law which will embrace certain principles agreeable to the majority of Canadians. These include: selection of immigrants without regard to race, respect for the importance of the family, a more open policy towards political refugees, and a close correlation between immigration and the employment situation.Lefebvre explained that the Green Paper is composed of four main sections: Perspectives on Immigration Policy; Statistics on Immigration LEFEBVRE .talks on immigration policy.ROBERT and population: The Immigration Program; and Textiles industry unhappy “The industry is very disappointed,” stated J.I.Armstrong, President, Canadian Textiles Institute, this week, commenting on an announcement by the Hon.Alastair Gillespie concerning the serious injury being caused to Canadian at Valleyfield Three young men, Kenneth Chaplin, Peter Glenn and Gregory Graham were confirmed and received their first Holy Communion at Valleyfield United Church Sunday, April 13.William Lange, student minister, conducted the service.Special music was provided by the organist, Mrs.À.Chaplin.The guest minister, Dr.Arthur Van Seters, conducted the service of confirmation, assisted by Donald MacLean, clerk of session who presented each of the new young church members with a hymn book.Dr.Seters is the executive director of the Montreal Institute for Ministry, a joint board of theological colleges affiliated with McGill University.production and employment by textile imports.“The positive measures contemplated by the gouvernment are minimal and will do little to improve the current unsatisfactory situation surrounding employment and investment confidence,” said Armstrong.“While the industry continues to do all within its power to restore former employment levels it is essential that measures which have been recommended by the Textile and Clothing Board and accepted by the government be implemented immediately and without deviation.” “In 1973, there were 17 individual items representing 15.9 per cent of total textile and clothing imports under some form of restraint.By contrast, if all the measures now recommended are implemented, only nine items representing 5.4 per cent of total imports will remain under restraint.” St.Anicet HITACHI Sales and Service Specialty COLOR J.L.DANCAUSE T.V.Tel: 264-2565 Tp [Id CTSATITYY — Jack of all trades.Three Years of Life in Canada. The emphasis was on the first of these throughout the meeting.Mention was made of Canada’s population problem due to the drop in the birth-rate since 1950: the number of immigrants accepted may become a fa More important factor in the country's population growth in the years to come.Quebec.for instance.said Lefebvre is actually not growing at all if all factors concerning population are taken into account.Another immigration problem concerns the seemingly inevitable drift of immigrants to major population centres.More ways must be found to divert this flow to smaller centres, which may have more to offer the immigrant and which need more people.Options open The Green Paper stresses the need for immigrants to preserve their identity.Quebec has already laid out a precise immigration policy designed to encourage French-speaking or potentially French- speaking immigrants, and Lefebvre stated that the Federal Government is ready to listen to the provinces on these THE GLEANER — APRIL 30 1975 — 11 Government seeks public guidance on immigration questions.Certain options are open to the government in dealing with immigration in the future. These include keeping the present policy in which the issuing of a Biven number of visas bears no relation to the economic situation; hinging the progran more firmly to economics and employment situations; setting a definite annual quota for immigrants to a given area within the country; setting an annual quota broken down by categories of immigrants.Reterring to policiteal refugees, the Green Paper states that Canada has become an important shelter for those forced to leave their countries of origin. But what exactly makes a person a political refugee rather than an ordinary immigrant?Definitions must be set up.Among the 34 representatives of various groups attending the Valleyfield meeting, which was chaired by André Masse, of the Valleyfield Chamber of Commerce, were Real Desgroseillers of the Huntingdon Lions’ Club, Alphonse Caron and Claude Maheu of the Huntingdon Catholic School Commission, and others representing service, educational, and municipal bodies in the Valleyfield area.LOW TEST GAS MUFFLERS AND EXHAUST SYSTEMS ® FREE INSTALLATION ® LOW PRICES e SOLO CHAINS SAWS ® BEATTY PUMPS AND PARTS ® PLASTIC PIPE ICASOLINE) GALLON CHAIN SAWS FOR ALL CHAIN fe 1// LIL] ACCESSORIES HUNTINGDON AUTO PARTS TEL: 264-2666 HUNTINGDON SIT = TILLERS AVAILABLE AT GOOD PRICES SPRING S Ac] #1 Firestone POWER MOWERS COME IN TODAY | AND SEE OUR COMPLETE Le .= % x Jo + na ee LINE OF MOWERS AT FIRESTONE BATTERIES Gas or diesel power up to 235 hp.More than a dozen transmissions to choose from. You can build Loadstar CHOICE .to meet your personal needs.— A variety of features give this truck high maneuverability, convenient ease of maintenance, lasting strength and versatility.Versatile LOADSTAR*® from International has proven itself over and over again at many different jobs.In the congested cities, on rugged construction sites and through swamp-like farm fields, Loadstar makes the work seem easy. The Loadstar chassis is engineered to accommodate a variety of bodies. The body of your ;, choice will fit and work so i.well you'll swear Loadstar TRACTORS-CARS-TRUCKS New 75 Cub Cadet” lawn and garden tractors — theyre quiet.with so-mounts and extra nsulation 50 attachments available.6 new, easy-starting models Drop in to see our salesman today about Loadstar.
