~ .: .»- - a E FT.- ° (Photo: JT) bee + The house at 1704 Route 138, Très-St-Sacrement, the day after the fire.Flames destroy house at former Martin & Stewart site near Howick Judith Taylor THE GLEANER A once-proud vintage brick house on Route 138 near Howick was gutted by a fire in the early morning of Friday Jan.11.The two people in the building when the blaze broke out shortly after 2 a.m.were \u201clucky to get out safely\u201d said Howick Fire Chief Robert Scoble, who called in tankers from six neighboring departments to help put out the fire.Firemen from Ormstown, St-Louis-de- Gonzague, St-Etienne, Huntingdon, Franklin and Hinchinbrooke came with water, and the blaze was finally brought under control around 5 a.m., Scoble said, although firemen kept an eye on the site throughout the day to watch for any further outbreaks within the walls or roof area of the house.Firemen's first impressions were that the blaze may have been caused by an electrical fault in the first-floor living-room area of the front apartment.This was rented by the Centre Michel-Ange, a substance-abuse detox and therapy facility.A woman and a girl fled from the burning house, escaping with only the clothes on their back to the shelter of a passer-by\u2019s van.They were taken to the Howick Fire Hall and later referred to the Red Cross disaster service for assistance.Family away A young family living in the apartment at the rear of the building was away at the time of the blaze.Officers of the Haut-St-Laurent SQ were also present at the scene, and returned Friday morning to check for evidence of the fire's origins.No police report was available as of Gleaner press time.Scoble said the interior of the front section of the large house was pretty well destroyed and it seems unlikely it will be rebuilt.The structure, originally an imposing family residence, served for several years as the office for the adjacent Martin & Stewart Hides and Skins plant.When that operation burnt down in another spectacular fire about 20 years ago, the house was converted into two units which were rented to a series of tenants.sessme Sports news : Page 15; World War II was underway.I first met Mr.L'Heureux, a young policeman, in Sherbrooke, Que.His duty at the time was to stand guard over a water reservoir next to my home.I was intrigued by this man who daily took his post and remained vigilant throughout his watch.My mother made lunches for me to bring to him and I kept him company for many hours during his lonely, but important, vigil.He always had time to talk to me and led me to develop a respect of policemen, which has lasted all my life.I had no idea then that he would influence me in other ways.A gentle man, always ready to help others, he rose in the police ranks from constable to Chief of Police; his exploits are legendary in the field of Quebec law enforcement, as a man dedicated to the protection and safety of others.Picked on by bullies Joffre L'Heureux was a New Year baby in 1917!\"As a youngster, he was scrawny and lacked self-confidence.Smaller than other kids his age, he was the target of continuing jibes from other boys.Having lost his father when he was two, he was an easy victim and had great difficulty in dealing with his lot in life despite a loving mother who did all she could to help her warm-hearted youngster.The tension led to a neurological condition then known as \u201cSt.Vitus\u2019 Dance\u201d, and a near-complete physical and nervous collapse.Influenced by early strongmen such as Canadian Louis Cyr and American George F.Jowett, Joffre not only eventually conquered his nervous condition but, through weight training, became legendary in the performance of his police duties.In Richmond, Que., an Eastern Townships mining town where he was hired as a modern-day Wyatt Earp, he proved his mettle subduing bullies who had brought fear to the community.Long-time residents still remember his exploits in cleaning up the town \u2014 physical battles in which he stood alone against strong odds and brought the bullies to the station house, two or three at a time.His outwardly-small but strongly-developed body was that of a young man who by now had dedicated his life to attaining physical superiority through weight train- This photo of L'Heureux dates from his time as a bodybuilding champion.(Photo: courtesy T.McC.) Council decided to engage Quebec Provincial Police to serve the community, Chief Joffre L'Heureux, the first and last full-time law officer in Huntingdon, retired on December 31, 1986.The Huntingdon force had been his home for most of his 50-year career as a police officer.He was honored at a retirement party at the Huntingdon Chateau after 38 years with would be respectful of the rights of everyone, without exception,\u201d \u2014 the code of a true police officer.Iron Warrior Joffre L'Heureux,the Iron Warrior, instilled in me a high and continuing respect for police officers as well as great admiration for his success as a bodybuilder.He is a gracious gentleman who, with his charming wife, his companion of over 40 years, remains a respected member of the community he protected for so many years.The community you served so well will long remember their dedicated and efficient policeman who was always there to safeguard their interests.Congratulations, Joffre.My admiration for experts said there was nothing to fear from a whole lot of pigs living at very close quarters, since certain valuable pieces of paper showed that the quantities of manure they produce could be thinly spread over large tracts of farmland, enriching the soil and posing no threat to water-ways.Once upon a much earlier time, a whole lot of people started living at very close quarters in the first cities the world had ever seen.They too produced a lot of \u201cmanure\u201d.Especially fortunate were those cities located on rivers or other bodies of water, since the human waste could be dumped directly into said water-way and borne away.This seemed like an excellent solution at the time \u2014 it was only much, much later So as E that human knowledge expanded to include things like e-coli bacteria, sewage treatment plants and so on.But by that time, the world\u2019s population had increased so much that clean fresh water supplies had become rarer, and cities had become so huge that people were packed in almost like factory-farmed livestock.And even with the best of intentions, ignordnce and greed continued to result in widespread pollution of the world\u2019s water.\u201cWe didn\u2019t know any better then, but we do now,\u201d has been the constant plea over the centuries, and it continues today when government refers to the huge problems already caused in other parts
