That describes Lorna Simms, who became a centenarian this spring, celebrating 100 years of life on May 30, 2003.Lorna says, \u201cI'm the luckiest lady in Howick!\u201d She lives happily surrounded by family and friends, and appreciates the health services available in her community.Lorna Palmer was born in Winnipeg, Man.Growing up, she lived \u201call over Ontario\u201d as her father was with the Grand Trunk Railway, and later a salesman for various companies.At age six she started school in Toronto.Eaton\u2019s offered nursery care with competent care for children while their mothers shopped.It was a good marketing strategy to get the mothers into the store.When she was 17, her family moved to St.Lambert, Que.The family of her future husband, Norman Simms, came from St.John, NB, to the same community.The joke was that Norman arrived first, to wait for Lorna.The couple were married there in 1927.Moved to Howick Their son Lorne\u2019s passionate desire to farm brought them to Howick when he was 19.The Simms bought the West farm on the Tullochgorum Road, and settled happily into country life, meeting neighbors and making friends to last a lifetime.Following Lorne\u2019s marriage to Clare Glen, the young couple remained on the farm where they raised their two sons, Stephen and Andrew.It's the place Lorna's five great- grandchildren love to visit.The Tullochgorum farm became a multi-gener- ational home.When Lorna was helping with her first church turkey supper.she made the stuffing without raisins, only to discover that hers was the only one made that way.Thus she learned about a Valley tradition.The Barrie Memorial Hospital was one of Lorna's compelling interests.Her husband.Norman.was Chairman of the Board of Directors for many years.Taking a leadership role in the Women's Auxiliary.Lorna expanded its membership by making contacts in St-Chrysostome.Not knowing anyone there.she asked the parish priest for help.He directed her to Mrs.Jerome (Margaret) Blais who graciously consented to get things started.The meeting also led to a lasting and happy friendship.Lorna canvassed regularly and sometimes wondered if people felt that they had to reach for their purses when they saw her.Special fashion show A grand highlight of Barrie activities was the fashion show held in Howick School in 1967 celebrating Canada's Centenary.while raising money for the hospital.A spectacular success, the show featured commentary and fashions of carli- More hay production per day Adjustable bale diameter and density 32-11040-040603 DONALD BROWN EQUIP.= We WS » \u2014e PF () P | F e\u2014\u2014,, Lorna Simms: 100th birthday in Howick.(Photo: courtesy JF) er times, with local people as models, as well as displays and exhibits of bygone days.The Red Cross, especially in wartime, found Lorna knitting.She knit an afghan to be auctioned and also judged knitting for a few years at Ormstown Fair.When Lorna was 19 she started playing bridge, a game she continued to enjoy into her nineties.A keen player, she shared her expertise with less experienced players.She enjoyed many years as a member of Howick Seniors.Other interests have been reading and letter writing.At 100 years of age Lorna\u2019s handwriting is still incredibly clear.Recently my sister Betty MacFarlane and I enjoyed a visit and cup of tea with Lorna.It was a lovely afternoon.And what a good memory she has! Her son Lorne remarked, \u201cDon\u2019t tell mother anything that you don\u2019t want her to remember.\u201d When asked what advice she had for young people today, Lorna said, \u201cI listen to them drainage is a misnomer, however, for some 90 percent of the pipe being laid today is in the form of corrugated plastic tubing.An even later development is the use of the trenchless system with laser populations posed by the tiny Varroa mite has affected not only honey production, but also all the crops, especially apples, which rely on bee pollination to produce fruit, berries or vegetables such as squash, cucumbers, peas and beans.Speaking at the May meeting of the Hemmingford Women\u2019s Institute, Agriculture convener Carol Petch said producers have already begun to resort to queen bees imported from places like PEI and Hawaii.\u201cThe mite attacks the bees, and wild bees are becoming scarcer as their habitat is disappearing,\u201d she told 17 WI members and one visitor.Orchard and Friday May 2 as pupils made another journey back in time.Following up on an earlier display of antique toys and sporting equipment, the school library this time was the location for a different kind of fashion show - one which featured clothing spanning the styles of the past 150 years.The display allowed the students to see and learn about the changes in the style of clothing and accessories over a century and a half.They were able to note that certain colors and styles have become fashionable time and time again, as trends come and go.However, all agreed that one garment that should stay in the past is the corset.From 1874 bridal outfits to 2060s crinolines, each student had a favorite, and their enthusiasm was so evident that a \u201c,mini fashion show\u201d will be added to the Track & Field This past weekend, 36 CVR athletes took part in the Regional Track Meet at St- Jean-sur-Richelieu.Their goal was to qualify as part of the Richelieu team and compete at the Provincial High School Championships to be held later in June at Quebec City.It's understood that not everyone can make it to the podium, yet many of our athletes produced personal bests in their events, while barely missing the third place podium spot.Such athletes were Michael Ouimet, who improved his 800m time from 2:15 to 2:12, missing third place by tenths of seconds; and Lauren Templeton.who improved du Haut Saint-Laurent qu'il a été détecté.Un premier cas vient d'être découvert à Huntingdon alors qu'un oiseau est décédé de cet agent infectieux.Le système de surveillance du VNO en sol québécois a pu l'identifier chez une corneille d'Amérique qui a été repérée dans la municipalité.Mis en place le 5 mai dernier, ce dispositif à permis de recevoir à ce jour 576 signalements d'oiseaux, d'en récolter 300 et d'en analyser 130.De ce nombre, 129 étaient classés négatifs.D'après le ministère de la Santé et des Services sociaux du Québec, il s'agit d'un premier animal à être récupéré et être testé atteint du VNO en 2003.La découverte de la bête morte a été annoncée par voie d'un communiqué de presse émis vendredi soir dernier et selon le MSSS, le décès remonterait à deux jours ou trois jours auparavant.Le porte-parole de la direction fdes communications du Ministère, Dominique Breton, a indiqué que la détection des oiseaux appartenant à la famille des corvidés, tels les corneilles simple de marijuana déposé à Ottawa la semaine dernière, répétant une fois pour toutes qu\u2019il n\u2019est aucunement question de rendre légal le produit au pays et qu\u2019il faut serrer la vis aux grands producteurs de même qu\u2019aux trafiquants de cette drogue.De passage à Saint-Anicet où il participait vendredi dernier au troisième tournoi de golf annuel du député fédéral de Beauharnois-Salaberry Serge Marcil, M.Cauchon a rappelé que la marijuana restera une substance interdite au Canada, ce qui est dans l\u2019esprit de cette législation qu'il souhaite voir adoptée
