William «Bill» Bryson of Ormstown set about achieving his goal 34 years ago of establishing himself as a «successful farmer.» Achieving «Master Breeder» status for their Holstein herd was a particular goal of Lynn (MacFarlane) Bryson, who had growing up on her own family\u2019s farm been part of reaching this echelon.Earlier this year, the Bryson family of Bryhill Farm Inc.received the news they had accumulated sufficient points (452) to receive Holstein Canada\u2019s highest award \u2014 the coveted «Master Breeder Shield».A total of 22 shields were awarded across Canada in 2003, including one to St-Louis- de-Gonzague\u2019s Jane Nieuwenhof and Daniel Montpetit.Bill and Lynn Bryson\u2019s four sons, Alan, David, Robert and Matthew, from an early age joined their parents in the barn and learned how to raise the type of cattle it takes to have a herd average of 12,049 kg with a BCA of 264-230-261, breed cows that classify Excellent (two) and Very Good (40) and Good Plus (86), as well on-road training for his upcoming schedule of triathalons.by Phil Norton Jim Sweet may be over the hill in terms of where he lives on Covey Hill Road in Franklin, but at age 54 he\u2019s still in his prime as an athlete.He\u2019s a marathon man and physical fitness is his passion.Whether it\u2019s on skis, on the treadmill or in the pool in the winter, or bicycling or running in the summer, he\u2019s got to be on the move.Last summer, the Chateaugay, New York native brought home 9 medals from an international event in Ottawa.Last fall he placed second in the grueling Montreal triathlon in the over-50 category.On Ile Notre Dame in mid-September the water in the Olympic basin gets a little chilly so the competitors don wet suits for the 750 metre swimming leg of the race.They run 5 kilometres and bicycle 12 miles in that event.Sweet says bicycling is his weak point.He\u2019s competing with a 30 year-old Dawes bike that he bought second hand for $30.The other racers are using lightweight bicycles with cutting edge technology that cost between $1,000 and $10,000.«They really get into their bikes,» he says with a grin.«If I can medal with my bike I'm doing good.l\u2019d like to win a race on my old bike.» As a triathalete he puts up with the peddling and doesn\u2019t mind the swimming, but he lives for the running.«l\u2019m a bit of a fanatic for running,» he admits.«Gotta get my runs in.» He can be seen training on the back roads around Franklin Centre and even running to and from work.While fitness is a big reason for his love of the sport, he likes the competitive aspect of it too.But more than anything it\u2019s the spiritual dimension that drives him and when he\u2019s out running he has plenty of time to think alone.«Running is poetry,» says Jim Sweet.«Running is an extension of my spirit.It feeds my soul.» He says it\u2019s not a religious thing it\u2019s about the spirit of the man.And he finds how closely linked the spiritual is with the physical.«There\u2019s nothing more beautiful than running at night when it\u2019s dark and chilly and you really get into your rhythm.If you've got problems you work them out in your head.» He believes in our world everyone needs a passion and running is his.«You crave it; you have a need for it.» Life along the border Jim Sweet is a US Customs Inspector who lives in Canada.Ironically, he time of the War of 1812 along with other New Englanders like Samuel Covey for whom the hill is named.His ancestor was a drummer for the American army who was captured and imprisoned in Montreal.The British released him when he agreed to serve as the drummer for their army and he was granted a parcel of land.The Sweet Side Road remains in Hemmingford Township although all of the Sweets moved back to New York State.Now the family has a new start north of the border with their 9 year-old son Willy Sweet.And Jim says it\u2019s his family, particularly Marguerite\u2019s support, to whom he beats you up too much,» he says.«You can only do three of those a year.» Instead, he runs in shorter events\u2014S5, 10, and 15 kilometres\u2014that demand just as much from the runner.«In a 5 k race it hurts,» he says.«You're running as hard as you can the whole race.» Lactic acid build-up in the muscles creates the pain.If you «hit the wall,» a term used by marathon runners for when they feel as they can\u2019t go on another step, Sweet says you're not training properly.On February 2, 2004 he competed in Montreal at subzero temperatures.Everyone\u2019s time was well over their usual times.Throughout warmer weather monthly running events are held by the West Island Running Circuit.He checks race results on the Internet to see how his competition is doing.This year he\u2019ll be competing in a number of Vermont races and he looks forward to 2005 when Quebec City will host the World Police and Fire Games for law enforcement officers like himself.His goal for 2004 is set on Huntingdon Learning Centre Raymond Taillefer and Garole Goudreau can read and write better They both had enormous difficulty reading and writing only a few months ago.Today, they are able to manage and better understand the French language and numbers.Although not completely illiterate, Raymond Taillefer and Carole Goudreau were not able to get through books or documents, or take up the pen to take notes or express their ideas.Getting up their courage, they decided to register at Huntingdon\u2019s Learning Centre last autumn to bridge gaps in their learning.Six months later, these two Huntingdon residents have made enormous progress after developing their basic knowledge of reading and writing.They now feel much more functional and sure of themselves.A young mother of two children, Goudreau was unable to help them with their school homework, had a hard time with the subtleties of the French language.«The school sent me letters, but I didn\u2019t understand the sense of them.I knew how to write, but math and grammar gave me a hard time,» she admits.Instead of self-pity, the 32 year old young woman took her courage in both hands and registered for basic courses in French, English, reading and data processing of the CFH (centre de formation de Huntingdon).«When I got there I asked myself what I was doing there.I was ashamed because I had difficulty.I believed it was only me that had trouble reading and writing but it was the opposite,» she says.A widower for four years, Taillefer has long earned his living without knowing how to read or write, having quit school after grade four.«I was able to get by nonetheless.I often pretended I could read although it wasn\u2019t true.I was 40 and had never opened a book,» he says.Following the advice of a friend in Valleyfield, this retiree registered last September at the Huntingdon Learning Centre to follow a 25-hour a week programme in literacy.«I didn\u2019t have anything to do, and at home, I found time too long.I decided to take the training course and I did- n\u2019t regret it,» admits the octogenarian.These two people have only good words about the trainers at the CFH who helped CLA dg Model shown for Easter.Rain in the Valley fell as snow on Covey Hill then overnight no one was spared of a fresh blanket of white for Monday morning.Snow geese have already winged northward overhead, and woodcocks landscape.Just a couple of weeks ago maple syrup-makers were wishing for warmer weather.That finally came.Then, after a prolonged thaw they were hoping for one last blast of cold to make the sap run again.For those who had faith and left the buckets on the trees or cleaned the pipeline to improve the grade, this is it.The quality of syrup should be good until the buds come out and the tree frogs chirp.Around Rockburn the old-timers say the frogs have to freeze three times before sugaring ends.It\u2019s already been two weeks since the frogs were first hopping across porches and roads on a warm wet evening.But they too have disappeared again with the cold.Road conditions after a spring snowstorm are always the worst because many road maintenance contracts have expired.Ploughs and snowblowers have been removed from vehicles and stockpiles of road salt have been depleted.We're also just barely squeaking out of winter with depleted piles of firewood.It was a tough year to find firewood.The shortage is due to more people equipping themselves with self-suffi- cient means of home heating since the 1998 ice storm blackout.Six years later big trees are getting harder to find in the bush.Local lumberjacks are delivering wood to Westmount for upwards of $125 a cord.Early April is an in-between season, on the border between ice and mud, bud and bloom, darkness and light.The in Scotland in September 1819.The following Spring, his father, Peter Macarthur, sailed with the family for Canada.While in Montreal, he was engaged to go to Beauharnois to repair the old grist mill there, for he was a mill-wright by trade.He came to Huntingdon looking for land.(and) finally bought out one of the old American settlers on the Chateaugay (sic), a short distance above Turcot\u2019s bridge, and combined mill-build- ing with farming, and erected several grist mills for the seignior (sic).After the burning of Cameron\u2019s mill at the Portage, there being no mill between Ste Martine and Huntingdon, and as the seignior would neither provide one himself, nor let anybody else do so at Ormstown, Mr Macarthur bought a lot.at Dewittville and proceeded to raise a small getting.I agree that children need support when they\u2019re involved in sports or activities, but it has gotten ridiculous how many of the parents think their children are the next Wayne Gretzky and that the NHL is just around the corner.If the little superstar was so great, he wouldn\u2019t have been on a B team, regardless whether or not he was playing defense before that.His stick handling skills, skating and puck control shouldn\u2019t have changed by playing one position or the other.Scoring 47 goals and only 8 assists in a season might mean that the child was a very skilled player bronchus, larynx and esophagus.Many people believe that they can quit smoking anytime.But, the truth is nicotine in cigarettes is very addictive.Trying to quit smoking can lead to nicotine withdrawal including cravings, irritability, restlessness, anxiety, sleeplessness, and increased appetite.Many people aren\u2019t able to deal with these symptoms and are unable to quit smoking, even though they know that smoking has a harmful affect on ones health.Finally one last thing that people should consider before they start smoking is the negative economic impact that smoking has on ones family found itself homeless last Wednesday after its residence was completely destroyed by a major fire.A couple and their three children were in the residence on Montée Gilmore when fire broke out that afternoon.Towards 4 p.m., the occupants noticed smoke in the house and just had time to get outside before flames engulfed the whole building.It was difficult for firefighters to battle the blaze.Hinchinbrooke\u2019s fire trucks had to travel a considerable distance between Montée Gilmore and the private road to the residence.The vehicles also had to navigate a very muddy entry to reach the house.Upon their arrival, the firefighters knew the house would be difficult to save.Despite their efforts, the fire had already practically destroyed the residence.The next morning, firefighters returned to extinguish flames that had reemerged from the wreckage of the home.The Haut-St-Laurent branch of the Streté du Québec dispatched officers to the disaster scene.However, it was nearly impossible for police to determine the origin and exact cause of the blaze.«We could not carry out a thorough investigation because the house was completely razed,» explained sergeant Robert Brabant of the SQ.Although they escaped the fire safely, the five occupants were upset to lose their home and belongings.The flames struck with such force that the residence is but a heap of charred Six years after its creation, the Haut- St-Laurent local development centre (CLD, centre local de développement) is entering a new phase of its short history with the in-depth revision of its decision- making infrastructure.The revision looks to the disappearance of the executive committee, the introduction of a discussion table and the re-planning of the board of directors.At the CLD\u2019s annual general assembly, held last Thursday, March 25 in Huntingdon, the members voted in favour of the installation of new mechanisms for the organization\u2019s internal management.In a 28 to 14 vote, they agreed to the organizational recasting of this corporation, which takes effect Thursday, April 1.Once revised, the new board of directors will pass from 21 to only nine members.It is formed of four mayors, three representatives for agriculture, tourism, industry and trade, and two others working apart from these sectors.The reorganization of the Haut-St- Laurent CLD will also see the creation of a discussion table of 19 members.This includes six mayors, two deputies from industry and trade, and from tourism and agriculture, and seven others from the milieus of culture, environment, cooperatives, workers, training, health and community world.At the meeting, 12 of the 19 members of the new CLD discussion table were elected.These include Roger Robidoux (training), décroché le premier prix pour le volet «attraction touristique, 50 000 visiteurs ou plus» au cours de la cérémonie.Il n\u2019en était pas à sa première récompense du genre au niveau régional puisqu\u2019il avait triomphé du côté des «attractions touristiques attirant plus de 100 000 visiteurs» en 2001 et en 1999 dans la catégorie «promotion et service à la clientèle.» C\u2019est avec un plaisir évident que le directeur général des Amis du Parc Safari, Serge Lussier et le coordonnateur du marketing et des communications du site, Danny Roy, sont allés cueillir le précieux trophée.Un succès, il demeure le même à 68,3%.Là où l\u2019école Arthur-Pigeon fait bien meilleure figure lors de ces épreuves, c\u2019est au niveau de l\u2019anglais langue seconde cinquième secondaire avec un taux de réussite de 88,2%.Par contre, elle affiche un piètre pourcentage de succès de 41,8% en mathématiques 436, de 54,9% du côté de l\u2019anglais langue seconde quatrième secondaire et de 58,6% au chapitre des mathématiques 514.La directrice de l\u2019école Arthur-Pigeon, Nicole Raymond, explique que les résultats mitigés en sciences physiques 416 et en français sont attribuables aux changements survenus en cours d\u2019année au niveau des professeurs responsables de ces cours.«Le prof de sciences physiques a dû s\u2019absenter pour des raisons de santé et il a fallu le remplacer en cours de route.La même chose s\u2019est produite en français où on a dû faire procéder à des remplacements dans le personnel enseignant.Il faut parler ici de situations totalement imprévues», a-t-
