[" Wy, Stabe 28, 2004 Saran Rernie The first weekend of the fall season felt more like summer, with a hint of winter foreshadowing, as the only clouds in the sky were those being kicked up by four rocketing snowmobiles as they tore up the track at the third annual Snowmobile Grass Drag Race Championship in Godmanchester over the weekend.The makeshift track stretched 500 feet from start to finish with another 720 feet after the finish line for the drivers, some of them reaching speeds of over 100 miles an hour, to slow down and turn around.Fans crowded in the stands and lined along the track behind an orange net barrier all turned their heads in unison as the speeding machines blazed past in heats off four while the next set of racers scurried to get their vehicles in position before the dust settled.The Huntingdon leg of the grass drag series organized by Paul De Martin, who started the race up after mulling over the idea with friends.\u201cIt had been a long time we\u2019d been thinking about it,\u201d says De Martin, who finally got the ball rolling three years ago.\u201cBut it\u2019s a good success,\u201d he says, noting the turnout was \u201cmuch better\u201d than the 5000 spectators of the year before when rain washed out the final day of competition.As the sun graced the spectators, one group of racers after another surged over the turf in one of numerous classes, including stock, improved stock, pro- stock, open modified and heavy modified.The machines were further classified along a sliding scale of power starting at 120 c.c., for children aged 6 and under and going all the way up to 1000 c.c.When set loose, some of the modified machines packed up to 300 horsepower and could race 500 feet in under five seconds, flat.Racers were able to compete in one of three levels of ability, either amateur, sport or professional, depending on their level of driving experience in organized races.\u201cIts a major rush,\u201d said Wilfred Underwood, of flying down the track on his vintage snowmobile, which he estimates travels around 35 to 40 miles an hour.However he admits there\u2019s a big difference between driving on turf than on snow.\u201cThey\u2019re a little harder to control,\u201d he says of the grass machines, adding that steering is also a bit more difficult.But, he smiled, \u201cthere\u2019s no other high like it.\u201d According to Marcel Fontaine, the President of Super Competitions Motorisees (SCM) Racing, the two day event brought out well over 200 drivers from across Quebec, Ontario and the United States, including at least 35 local Every week.u papes 1,088 uo ald Annual Snowmobile grass championshig anything ut a drag Racers churn up the track on the final day of compestion during the third anmaal Grass Drag Race Championship held in Godmanchester over the weekend.racers who were not a part of the usual drag series.However, the man to beat was the Quebec champion, and new World champion in the factory modified class, Cultural Activity Days in the Valley SOY Mrs.Saturday September 25, 2004 was the day my adventure, back in time began.First stop Havelock Town Hall.Greeted by G.Martel-Tardiff organizer of Javelock Culture Days, along with her gsistant they shuffled me into the almost -year-old building.(Culture did some- Fe say culture?)
