[" -g + \u2014 - SPRY E For two weeks, the Ormstown Elementary School (OES) has been hosting an Olympic challenge that is involving 165 children in eight classes at this completely bilingual school.The opening ceremonies were held last Friday, February 10th, in the gymnasium with close to 30 parents in attendance, which was followed by an Olympic parade through Ormstown\u2019s main streets.The Ormstown Fire Department blocked off the streets for the event, says OES physical education teacher Brian Woods.\u201cStudents are really excited about the Olympics here and what they are seeing on TV,\u201d says Woods, noting each class was responsible for choosing a country to represent and is now learning as much as possible about their chosen country.\u201cEach day all the classes are learning something new about their chosen country, like the flags, the capitals, the geography,\u201d he says.\u201cIt\u2019s not just competitions being done in gym class.It involves the whole school.Everyone.\u201d Woods says the students have decorated the doors of their classrooms with information they have already learned about their chosen countries.In math, they're learning to calculate the distance from one town in their country to another.In addition, to the math, \u201cthey\u2019re learning the town names, the geography, about the people and their customs too.\u201d In fact, the 5/6 class picked Jamaica for their country and during the OES Olympic opening ceremonies \u201cthe senior class dressed the part and played drums throughout the Olympic parade in Ormstown,\u201d says Woods, \u201cand they were definitely the loudest!\u201d Austria, Canada, China, France, Finland, Italy, and Japan were the other countries chosen by the students for the course of the OES Olympics.The students are also being asked trivia questions about their chosen countries, like how to say \u201chello\u201d and on Valentine\u2019s Day how to say \u201cI love you\u201d.\u201cOf course, Canada and France got full points,\u201d says Woods, noting the other classes will have other activities where they will be able to earn bonus points.Woods says the emphasis of the Olympics at OES is \u201cnot competitive, but for them to do as many activities as possible, to participate, and for the classes to work together.\u201d Considering each class has a thermometer to mark how many medals their country with a Subscription 0 ™GI EANER What « grest way te save! 264-5364, Michel Hohuu Danh Nguyen PHARMAGISTS locations te better suive you Open © day -
