A quarter tank-that\u2019s $27.50 per day! For people who live in rural areas, the pinch is felt even more because of the distances needed to travel in order to run simple, everyday errands.And if your livelihood depends on gas consumption-whether for farm cquipment, transport or travel-you may bc wondering how you'll make ends meet or even if you'll be able to stay in business.The crisis is real, with pundits predicting no relicf on the horizon.I hear a lot of complaints, cxcuses and uscless solutions-I still get emails about rotating boycotts of gas companies; I read blogs on where to get the cheapest gas; I hear news reports of consumers complaining about how much it costs them to travel.I hear very little in-depth analysis, however, on the reasons why things have gotten so out of control.When the price hikes started, we heard every excuse imaginable, from hurricanes in the Gulf to tsunamis to civil unrest.You name it, the oil companies fed it to us.Later, overseas oil magnates became the culprits.Recently, blame was laid on commodity fund investors for \u2018manipulating\u2019 the markets.I feel governments are partly to blame for standing by quietly as extra money falls into their pockets.For every dollar Quebecers pay for gas, 37.7 cents goes towards taxes.That's 5% GST, 7.5% PST, 10% Federal Excise tax, and 15.2% Provincial tax.It stands to reason that if the top oilmen are making more money, the government charging a percentage is raking it in too.After years of extra profit, it's time they cut fuel taxes.When prices rise by 50%, they can cut taxes by about one-third with no losses what- soever-that would be significant savings to customers.No matter whom we point our fingers at, all must be blamed at some point for their greed.The most current rumour, however, is what could be a sign that high fuel prices arc here to stay.China and India\u2019s greatly increased oil demand as their countries prosper from the new global economy will definitely have an impact on our world for years to come.Everyone mourned the abject poverty of these nations over the past century as the West prospered from the Industrial Age.Now they are finally catching up, which is great; no one likes to see people going hungry, whether half a world away or next door.But we have been in a prosperity bubble for so long, we forget that global societies are in a constant state of evolution.And for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction; when they arrived here, Joe went from working tobacco fields to working in tobacco factories-a job he dis- liked-to cutting Christmas trees to chopping wood.After several years of job changes that brought the Van Windens to areas such as St.Henri, L'Assomption and St.Sulpice, they arrived in Huntingdon, their final destination.Joe worked for other farmers for a few more years before finally arranging to work in shares.After three years he finally was able to purchase the farm.\u201cIn 1959, Notary Pilon, then a young notary in Huntingdon, had our papers ready for a Farm Credit Loan; d\u2019élus municipaux du Haut Saint-Laurent, de plusieurs citoyens de Huntingdon et d\u2019entreprises sur le point de s\u2019installer dans la localité.Des accusations de nature criminelle ont été portées contre MM.Chenail, Genest et Lalonde par le juge Richard Marleau le 30 mai au palais de justice de Valleyfield, selon des informations diffusées par les médias montréalais et vérifiées par The Gleaner/La Source.Les trois hommes avaient chacun reçu une sommation émise par un juge de paix quelques jours plus tard.MM.Chenail, Genest et Lalonde devront se présenter en cour criminelle au palais de justice de Valleyfield dès le 4 septembre prochain, selon ce qui a été possible de savoir.Pour le début de l\u2019audition de cette cause, ils devront décider s\u2019ils plaident coupable ou non mois par la Sûreté du Québec (SQ) avait permis de recueillir des témoignages auprès du bureau de comté de M.Chenail et de l\u2019association libérale de Huntingdon faisant état de propos controversés réunis dans deux documents écrits appelés «Saviez-Vous Que» et «Combat! La Voix de la Résistance».Les policiers disaient avoir démontré que ces documents, dont les auteurs n\u2019étaient pas identifiés, furent produits par des employés rémunérés de l\u2019Assemblée Nationale, tout en utilisant les fournitures mis à la disposition du bureau de circonscription.La SQ avait soutenu que ces documents furent expédiés dans des boîtes aux lettres et ciblaient tous les maires des municipalités du Haut Saint-Laurent, des résidants de Huntingdon et des entreprises qui s\u2019installaient dans le parc industriel de la ville.Les trois hommes n\u2019avaient pourtant pas été poursuivis relativement à la transmission de ces documents controversés.Un procureur du ministère public du district judiciaire de Gatineau avait fait savoir qu'aucune accusation ne pouvait être portée contre MM.Chenail, Genest et Lalonde en raison d\u2019une directive du Procureur général du Québec qui, selon lui, interdit ce genre de poursuite dans la province, en dépit des dispositions à cet effet du Code criminel canadien.petite entreprise qui a contribué à l'essor économique de Huntingdon durant le longues années, d\u2019où la création d\u2019un musée au cœur même de l'immeuble.M.Krolikowski aimerait bien faire appel aux citoyens qui auraient en leur possession des pièces d\u2019époque pouvant être exposés dans le musée.Il souhaiterait réunir des équipements servant à la fabrication de la farine.Des photos anciennes, de vieilles lettres ou de vieux manuscrits sont aussi les bienvenus.Tous ces articles seraient données pour y être entreposés en permanence ou prêtés.«J'aimerais devenir le gardien de ces biens communs, une sorte de conservateur de l\u2019endroit», a-t-il dit.M.Krolikowski rêve aussi de créer un organisme formé de bénévoles pour animer le Vieux Moulin.Il aimerait rallier des jeunes et des aînés pour échanger des informations et créer des activités se rapportant à l\u2019histoire de l\u2019édifice.Les autorités municipales de Huntingdon ont déjà -été approchées pour la revitalisation du Vieux Moulin.M.Krolikowski a récemment rencontrré les membres du conseil de ville pour discuter avec eux de son projet.«La Ville est au courant de mes démarches.L'accueil est positif jusqu\u2019ici», a- t-il soutenu.M.Krolikowski ignore combien devrait coûter tout le réaménagement du Vieux Moulin.Pour en assurer le financement, il s'attend à se tourner vers des bailleurs de fonds dûment reconnus.Le Vieux Moulin ne devrait pas subir une transformation de fond en comble.S\u2019il s\u2019est engagé à ce que l'architecture originale du bâtiment soit respecté, M.Krolikowski est d'avis que quelques travaux de restauration devront tout de même être effectués pour le préserver encore plusieurs années, en employant des matériaux utilisés jadis.«ll faut sécuriser le Vieux Moulin», souligne-t- il.Si M.Krolikowski réussit à amasser toutes les cartes maîtresses dans son jeu, les travaux de restauration et de nettoyage du Vieux Moulin pourraient commencer l\u2019an prochain.Quant à l\u2019ouverture officielle du site, elle n'aurait pas lieu avant 2010 ou en 2011, selon lui.Sous l\u2019impulsion de Piotr Krolikowski, le Vieux Moulin de Huntingdon pourrait éventuellement connaître une deuxième vie.(photo PL.) L | « aounos e] 14 » 11 juin 2008 » La Source Environ 75 marcheurs aux côtés de Gilles et Betty Riel ERE ll Deux résidants de Huntingdon, Betty et Gilles Riel, tiennent mordicus a ce que les personnes atteintes de cancer n\u2019aient plus à se battre pour pouvoir se rendre à leurs traitements médicaux dans des hôpitaux montréalais.Depuis maintenant trois ans, le couple vient en aide à la corporation Services d\u2019accompagnement bénévoles et communautaires (S.A.B.E.C.) en conviant leurs concitoyens et ceux de tout le Haut Saint-Laurent à venir marcher pendant quelques heures avec eux.Environ 75 personnes, munies de leurs espadrilles, ont circulé à pied samedi matin dans certaines rues de \u2018Huntingdon.Sous un soleil de plomb, ils ont marché sur une distance de 4,8 km, prenant le départ du parc Prince-Arthur où ils sont revenus un peu plus tard au terme de leur balade, en prenant bien soin de passer par le marché public champêtre de Huntingdon.Au nombre des marcheurs se trouvaient le député provincial de Huntingdon, Albert De Martin, visiblement heureux d\u2019encourager S.A.B.E.C.et les Riel.Deux Américaines, Mary Ellen Konopka du Massachussetts et Carolyn Canary de l\u2019Etat de New York, ont aussi participé au marchethon, répondant ainsi à l\u2019invitation de Mme Riel.«C\u2019est une très bonne idée que de faire cette marche, même s\u2019il fait très chaud.C\u2019est une cause qui nous touche beaucoup», ont-elle confié peu avant le départ.Cette année, les marcheurs ont eu une pensée particulière pour Cristina Durnin, une ancienne présidente de S.A.B.E.C.présentement hospitalisée en raison d\u2019une grave maladie.Sur un tableau blanc installé sur le site, les participants ont pu inscrire les noms de membres de leurs familles, de proches et d\u2019amis atteintes de cancer pour lesquels ils ont accepté de s\u2019inscrire à cette activité.Le marchethon de Gilles et Betty Riel aide à amasser des dons en argent pour SABEC qui effectue des déplacements pour les citoyens du Haut Saint-Laurent qui doivent subir des traitements médicaux.La totalité de la somme amassé est versée à l\u2019organisme qui est en mesure d\u2019offrir cinq transports gratuits à des personnes atteintes de cancer, tout dépen- damment d\u2019où ils résident dans la MRC.«Chaque fois que moi et mon mari organisons cette activité, il se passe toujours quelque chose d\u2019extraordinaire.La réponse est toujours positive», a indiqué Mme Riel en soulignant la grande générosité dont ont fait preuve une fois de plus les participants, les bénévoles et les commanditaires locaux qui s\u2019impliquent activement dans le marchethon.Au terme de la randonnée, environ 5 500$ ont été recueillis, ce qui l\u2019a ravie au plus haut point.«Je veux remercier tous ces gens-là du fond du cœur», a-t-elle indiqué.Au cours des prochaines semaines, les Riel comptent bien d\u2019ailleurs continuer de recevoir les contributions en argent qui Naissances et Décès Remerciements, À la mémoire, Fiançailles DEGES = CURRAN, Keith - Est décédé à Huntingdon le 7 juin 2008 M.Keith Curran à l\u2019âge de 78 ans.Epoux bien-aimé de Ludivine (Ludy) Landry.Il laisse dans le deuil ses enfants Denis (Cathy), Gerald (Michelle), Brigitte (Rodney), Anne Mary (Keith), Ellen (Brian) et Lorraine (Bernard), ses onze petits-enfants Danielle, Becky, Charlotte, Megan, Emily, Melissa, Laura, Bradley, Gregory, Justin et Sara, ses deux arrière petits-enfants Alexandria et Tatyana, son frère Léo ainsi que plusieurs parents et amis.Les visites ont eu lieu au salon funéraire Rodrigue Montpetit & Fils, 170, rue Chaeauguay, Huntingdon le mardi 10 juin 2008 ainsi que le mercredi 11 juin 2008.Les funérailles auront lieu mercredi 11 juin à 11 heures en l'Eglise St- Joseph, Huntingdon.Inhumation au cimetière St-Joseph.Des dons à l\u2019hôpital de Huntingdon ou à l'hôpital Barrie Memorial, Ormstown seraient appréciés.Rodrigue Montpetit & Fils 2 8 Salon funéraire Ë T Pré-arrangement-incinération Jacques Montpetit, propriétaire él.: 450.264.5331 + 170 Chiteauguay, Huntingdon REMERCIEMENTS ~~ Dimanche le 25 mai dernier a la messe de 11h, et le ler juin a celle de 9h30, vous avec souligné mes 50 années de sacredoce avec sobriété et chaleur.Le souvenir qui m'en reste est celui d\u2019une grande famille dont les membres se rencontrent dans l'amitié et la joie.Tous ensemble, à cette occasion, nous avons réalisé en petit le rêve de Jésus, celui de tous les peuples réunis en une famille de frères et de soeurs.Soyez-en remerciés!
