2008.Diodati says that Zumba is “just like a party atmosphere.” Diodati says Zumba is accessible to a large cross-section of people because the intensity can be varied and because there are no verbal cues used during the class.Participants looked like they were genuinely having fun as they danced away last Wednesday evening.Between stepping and clapping, there was laughter and smiles. For participant Heidi Buijs “time passes so fast. You're soaking wet, but you don’t realize that the hour’s over already.” The other participants standing around Buijs all laughed and will be celebrating its 90th anniversary this summer. The club, which brings together local owners of Holstein cattle and is the local liaison between cattle farmers and Holstein Quebec, first formed in 1919.The club had 59 original, founding members from Huntingdon and Ormstown — along with five additional members from Lachute.Today, the club has a total of 219 members and, since 1978, is officially called the “Huntingdon Ormstown Beauharnois Holstein Club.” The club, sometimes known to members as the “HOB,” has members located in an area from Dundee in the west to St.Constant in the cast.Current club president Alain Rouleau says that the club is the “oldest in Quebec, so that is quite impressive for an organization.Other [Holstein] clubs are only celebrating their 75th anniversary.” Club secretary Phyllis Danforth says that credit for the club’s longevity can be given to its members and organizers, who are all volunteers. The club, says Danforth, has “always been organized by volunteers, it's the interest and passion of the Holstein breeders that keep it going.” The club's 90th anniversary will be officially marked on Sunday, August 2 with a regional picnic event. The picnic will be held at the Templedale Holsteins property on that will be held at the Templedale Holsteins property. In addition to a picnic, the event will include a silent auction for embryos, games, and information on the history of the club.Club secretary Danforth says that the event will be a chance for families involved in the club to “share together, share a family day, and share in the passion of the Holstein breed.” Danforth says that it is hoped the event will be one that all of the members of HOB club families can attend. The event will be an opportunity for families to “share time together,” says Danforth. The club is “trying to bring that notion back.” Club president Rouleau says that the event will be of “interest of all the farmers in the Valley.” Templedale Holsteins is located on Scotch Concession in Howick. All HOB Holstein Club members are invited to attend the August 2 regional picnic event. The Holstein breed was first introduced to the area by Ormstown resident Neil Sangster in 1886.It is said that Sangster’s first Holstein produced so much milk that local cheese makers started refusing to take it.A list of the founding members of the HOB Club in 1919 J.J.Alexander, St-Louis de Gonzague,, Joseph Anderson, Huntingdon, Archie Bell, Huntingdon, James Since DeBellefeuille doesn’t show that politeness, my immediate reaction whenever receiving one of her missives is to chuck it in the recycle bin. While this does at least make a positive contribution to the environment, it is surely a waste of resources to send out something which is not reaching its audience. That’s not to say that I don’t understand French - I do, very well! Most of my day is spent working in French.I wouldn’t have written just to vent this view. What added insult to injury was the recent campaign which I can only presume has been instituted by the Conservative Party.Three such messages have arrived in the mail recently, all purported to be from MPs with English names. And the entire message is in French only! Even thought I might have given consideration to voting for the Conservatives, they won’t get it now! Why is it that this so-called national party has overlooked the fact that Quebec still has a large Anglophone population which could eventually vote for them if the situation was right?Quite a shame that our clected officials can’t see beyond their noses and carry out the principles which they have been elected to uphold.Alex Harper, Ste-Agnès-de-Dundee ~~ NCE To BE foulG AND FULL OF ENERGY, - 2 C @ 7.Rw 15-0709 120 years 0, July 11, 1889 LOCALS As we are going to press we receive word that, just before the thunderstorm that broke at daylight this (Thursday) moming, the house of Thos.R.Higgins, Newfoundout, took fire and was consumed with all its contents.Supposed cause, a defective chimney.Loss partly covered by a policy of the Glasgow & London. The Rev.A.Rowat has decided views on the Jesuit bill and is not afraid to avow them.He lectured on the subject in the Methodist church at Hendersonville on Thursday evening and in his own church at Athelstan on Tuesday evening.ELGIN Thomas Levers was allowed $3 for iron straps and bolts for railing of the Elder bridge. The wire fences in district No.4, on the 1st concession road, were complained of as being too near the public road.Moved by Coun Elder, scconded by Coun Bell, that all wire fences built, or to be built, must be moved back and built a lawful distance from the public road. Les personnes qui veulent s’y inscrire n’ont qu’à se rendre le jour même de la course vers midi au kiosque sur le site du festival du mais ou peuvent entrer book and a lively short film that take on the topic of bullying are the end products of a six- month long life skills and work project carried out by a group of 12 area youth. The productions were presented during an official “premiere,” and press conference in Huntingdon last Wednesday, June 8.The video and the comic book tell audiences — whether they be readers or viewers - the story of a group of young people and the way that they deal with various forms of bullying in their lives. The story also touches upon various aspects of family life, peer relations, and personal feelings that young people often have to deal with in their lives. From story concept, to planning, scripting, photographing, and filming, the youth involved in the project carried out all aspects of production themselves. The youth were recruited by the Ormstown-based “Une Affaire de Famille,” organization to participate in this year’s edition of the “Les jeunes, maitres de leur destinée,” project. This year is the second year that the project has run.The program receives funding aid from Service Canada and the federal Youth Employment Strategy, and is targeted at youth between 15 and 30 years Bnd SUNTAN cd Farm break-in: milk stolen Police say that sometime between July 4 and 5, a break-in occurred at a dairy farm on Chemin de Planches in Godmanchester. One or more individuals took off with 100 litres of milk, a compressor machine, and a flashlight.Police say that the machine was later found along the side of a road.Police seized a bicycle from farm that did not belong to the property owner.Motorcyclist injured in Franklin An accident involving a motorcycle and a car led to an injury on Thursday, July 9, in Franklin. The two vehicles were both travelling south on Route 201.The motorcycle was behind the car.At approximately 4:25 p.m., the motorcycle suddenly struck the rear of the car when the car slowed down to make a left turn into a driveway.Police say that the motorcycle was following the car too closely. The driver of the motorcycle, a 37 year-old man from Franklin, was taken to hospital in Salaberry-de-Valleyfield with minor injuries. In addition to his minor injuries, the motorcyclist was also cited by police for having broken a condition of his learner’s motorcycle license by driving his motorcycle without being accompanied by another person.Moped vs.car in Saint-Chrysostome Police say that a 14 year-old teenage boy from Saint-Clotilde was hurt when the moped he was riding collided with a car on July 5 near Saint- Chrysostome. The two vehicles were both travelling north on Rang Sainte- 16 » The Gleaner » July 15, 2009 Anne around noon when the moped, attempting to make a left turn into a driveway, was hit Trois in Ormstown on July 6.The scooter, a black Yahama 2002 valued at approximately $1,200, belonged to an individual visiting the residence.Police say that the theft occurred between noon and 8 p.m.Suspected impaired driver arrested by the SQ Officers from the SQ arrested a 58 year-old American man for suspected impaired driving on the Canadian side of the Dundee border crossing last Wednesday, July 8.At approximately 5:25 p.m., the man arrived at the Canadian border post in an attempt to be admitted to Canada.Border services officers noted that the man appeared to be under the influence of alcohol. The man gave a breath sample that was positive for alcohol. The SQ was contacted and, when officers arrived on the scene, they took the man to the Ormstown SQ detachment.Breath samples given by the man at the SQ office, indicated that the man had a blood alcohol level one and a half times the legal limit. The man, a resident of Lowville, New York, was arrested and later released on a promise to appear at the Salaberry-de-Valleyfield courthouse in September.of age who are not in school and not working. The project’s mission, according to its organizers, is to help participating youth overcome obstacles to entering the job market through workshops on self-awareness, self-esteem, career choice, how to integrate into the job market, and on general life skills. As part of the program, participants also have the opportunity to plan and develop a major project.Last year — the first year the program operated — participants chose a project on drug use. This year, bullying was the participants’ topic of choice. At last Wednesday's event, participants took questions from the audience about the project. They discussed learning to work together
