apples.Succulent apple muffins and apple juice were served to everyone. Also at the festival, members of the south shore chapter of the Association des motos américaines du Québec offered free 20- and elsewhere across Quebec.aimed the spotlight at artists.many of whom met the visitors who came to see some of their best creations. Many painters.sculptors.artisans.and musicians.spread across seven municipalities all weekend long.were on hand to present the fruits of their artistic labours. The activities attracted a great many people.especially with the bad weather on Sunday.judging by what The Gleaner/La Source observed. As in previous years.the 2009 “Journees de la Culture” took flight in Huntingdon.Nearly 100 people attended Friday night's vernissage of paintings and installations entitled “The Fruits of the Earth.” held at the Château de Huntingdons Salle Alfred-Langevin.The works the visitors admired throughout the evening bore the signatures of nearly 30 participating artists from across the Haut St-Laurent region. In Huntingdon, the artist Clarence Vandergeest held an open house for the general public at his art studio- gallery on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.Other Haut St-Laurent municipalities welcomed art and culture enthusiasts throughout the weekend. In Ormstown, the artist and painter Louise Pare welcomed visitors to her workshop. An artist and art teacher, she also displayed works by her students. Also in Ormstown, citizens convened at the corner of Rue Lambton and Rue Fulford on Saturday to create three giant mandalas, each measuring seven metres across, on the ground. At Le Lavandou art gallery in Franklin, some of the most beautiful canvases from painter André Librex.who owns the establishment, were on display for visitors.Meanwhile, in St-Chrysostome many visitors stopped in at the workshop of master-glass craftsman Detlef Gotzens. These people had the opportunity to discover the different steps in creating the stained glass for which this artist is internationally renowned. He was accompanied by Roger Nincheri, grandson of Guido Nincheri.another artist known worldwide. At the Villa Panoramique de Covey Hill in Havelock.the artistic festival was in full swing for three days. Many people visited the side of the barn covered in an exhibit of canvasses by local artists.in Elgin.visitors were also invited to tour the work- shop-gallery of artist Sylvie Brunet. Not only were they able to admire her paintings.but they were also treated to seeing her at work and had the chance to talk to her.The Droulers/Tsionhiakwatha archaeological site in St-Anicet also welcomed visitors on Friday.Saturday and Sunday from 9:30 a.m.until 4:00 p.m.Finally.music played a key role in the “Journees de la Culture”.At the Salle Alfred-Langevin, the vocal group The Avalon Singers and John Speed gave a short concert during the vernissage for the group exhibit on Friday evening.Musicians also performed at McMillan Orchards and Le Lavandou art gallery, both in Franklin, on Saturday afternoon. In Ormstown, the Branches and Roots music festival was held at the Fairgrounds on Friday, Saturday since 1946.However, it’s a rare occasion when people get the chance to discover the inner workings of the production of brioches, doughnuts, fruit cakes, biscuits and loaves of bread that has brought this family business great renown over the years. As a thank you to all their customers and friends, the management decided to hold an open house at the establishment. On Saturday, many people visited to find out more about all the steps in the preparation of these baked goods. In small groups, visitors were given a tour of the bakery’s production line.In twenty minutes, they were able to find out about how the machines work and how each product is prepared.Participants first discovered the semi-automated process of doughnut-making.The bakery offers ten varieties of doughnuts, each as tasty as the next.«We prepare from 60 to 75 dozen per hour.» explained Richard Grant, one of the co-owners of the business who was also a tour guide for the day.In the bread department, visitors watched employees carefully kneading two balls of dough that were later to become delicious loaves of bread.«Everything is done the old-fashioned way,» Grant assured his audience. All the ingredients for the baking processes are stored in a mini-warehouse.These include green and black cherries, pineapple and raisins, which arrive regularly in boxes and are destined for fruit cake preparation.Grant’s Bakery’s great reputation was also built on its famous fruit cake, sold at its own store, in service clubs across Canada and in supermarkets in Québec and the Maritime provinces.«Between 1,800 and 2,000 cakes are made here each day,» noted Grant.Visitors seemed especially curious about the secret to this fruit cake.Grant and his daughter, Ruth, revealed the process behind the famous product. The fruits, hulled or with their stalks removed, are mixed in a large vat. Then the ingredients are mixed in a bowl.«The cherry syrup is removed before mixing,» he explained.Fruit cake production usually begins at the end of June, according to Ms.Grant.Passing in front of the powerful propane-gas furnaces, visitors learned that each cake takes an average of two hours cooking time.ECOLE See Grant's page ) mama Fu 9 99 ON YOUR REMOTE pl CY This and that in town ) Rummage Sale Huntingdon’s Dames Chretiennes will be holding a Rummage Sale on Thursday and English School Boards in Quebec. The Recognition of Acquired Competencies (RAC) program is specifically designed to identify, document, assess and officially recognize skills and competencies of adult learners. It is now a regular service in adult education and continuing education and training programs in Quebec. This service is aimed at adults who wish to have official recognition, by the Ministry of Education, Sports and Leisure (MELS), of their competencies in their field and is based on the core philosophy that an individual should not have to redo in a formal educational setting, any learning they may have already acquired in other ways. The Recognition of Acquired Competencies program involves an evaluation of skills and competencies and allows for advanced-standing in a program of study and the acceleration toward a diploma. This process can be done while a candidate either looks for work or is currently employed and seeking to upgrade their skills and open doors for new prospects. The evaluation service is free to all residents of Quebec and is accessible through all nine English School Boards throughout the province (Central Quebec School Board, Eastern Shores School said that no candidate posters will be installed in public spaces during this year’s election campaign, the incumbent mayor of Huntingdon, Stéphane Gendron, was surprised to find his rival for the mayor's post, Howard Welburn, publicly calling upon him not to install any posters.«This invitation from my opponent astonished me all the more given that three months ago, | publicly St-Anicet By electoral program, I'm proposing the reclamation of up to 60 per cent of residual materials between now and 2011,» he indicated.Alain Castagner hopes to continue serving his fellow-citizens Mayor of St-Anicet since 1998, Alain Castagner feels ready for the challenge of leading the municipality for the next four years, a challenge he hopes to be granted in the upcoming municipal elections on November 1.«Our work is far from finished, even after 11 years. With the council members.| want to continue what we've started and cultivate new ideas to further develop the municipality.» he remarked in a brief conversation with The Gleaner/La Source.During the meeting, the mayor did not hesitate to recall some of the long-term achievements realized in the past few years in St-Anicet.Among others.he pointed to the creation of an environmental foundation, the purchase of 5.000 shrubs for the riverbanks in the village, the cleaning of the 144th Avenue canal.and the restoration work along Rivière LaGuerre. He admits there is still much to do for St-Anicet's elected municipal officials. The creation of a new community centre, along with the renovation of the municipal garage and the purchase of the Catholic church and presbytery are among the many outstanding projects slated for eventual realization.«It will fall to the next municipal administration to decide how these projects will proceed.» he remarked. While he has not always achieved unanimous results at the municipal council table, Castagner wants to continue working to bring the municipality's officials together.«On (translated by Denise D.Hubert) The former Liberal provincial deputy for Huntingdon, André Chenail, may have been the target of three men plotting an assassination.According to available information, three individuals were apprehended Thursday by investigators from the Montérégie regional division of the Sûreté du Québec (5Q).The suspects.Beauharnois resident Roger Fortier, 46, and Salaberry-de-Valleyfield residents Denis Billette, 58, and Gérard Mooijekind, 48, appeared the same day in court in Salaberry-de-Valleyfield, where they were formally charged with plotting murder. They were set to return to court Monday for a pro forma hearing.A spokesperson for the provincial police in Montréal, Agent Martine Isabelle, would not confirm that Chenail was the target of these three individuals.Isabelle was silent about the contents of the police investigation that led to these arrests. However, she did state that «it concerned a sum of money.» Interviewed Friday morning by court reporter Claude Poirier from the television program «Le Vrai Négociateur,» which airs on LCN, Chenail stated that two weeks ago, police met with him to ask whether he needed any special assistance while awaiting the arrest of individuals who may have been plotting to eliminate him.Agents asked him to leave his home for a while «for safety reasons,» he said.«| left my house and waited for time to pass.On Thursday was | called and informed that three men had been arrested and | could return home,» he recounted.Chenail was cautious about the links between himself and the individuals apprehended.«There are people | know, more or less, and others | don't,» he told the host.Huntingdon begins developing its future repopulation policy By Patrice LAFLAMME (translated by Denise D.Hubert) Population numbers in Huntingdon have been in a nosedive for a number years, a fact that is a concern to the municipal council as it prepares to present the municipality with a comprehensive strategy to increase the number of people settling in Huntingdon's territory over the next four years.Last week, the Town made public a discussion paper on an eventual repopulation policy for the town, which had been submitted to the municipal council last spring. The eight-page document has been analyzed by the mayor and councillors, in collaboration with the Quebec Ministry for Families and the Elderly.Municipal authorities drew up a portrait of the town's societal situation, making use of available demographic data. They also established projections about future local population numbers for the coming years.«The report is alarming.Although Huntingdon is once again economically prosperous thanks to the diversification efforts of the last few years, we are still under the threat of disappearing from the map in the short term. The population is growing older and the demographic deficit deeper at an alarming rate. There has been no residential development in Huntingdon since the 1970s,» remarked Mayor Stéphane Gendron.According to data collected by Statistics Canada and the Institut de statistique du Québec.the number of citizens in Huntingdon fell by three per cent between the 2001 and 2006 censuses.Every five years, the city loses five per cent of its population. This decrease will accelerate over the years to come, according to Gendron.«At this rate, Huntingdon will have less than 2.000 inhabitants within | 5 years,» he noted. The figures also show a decline in birthrates and increasing mortality in the municipality within the last decade. In 2004.there were 37 births and 58 deaths recorded in Huntingdon. The following year saw only 28 births compared to a steady 58 deaths.Municipal authorities estimate that 50 per cent of Huntingdon's population is over the age of 45, meaning it ranks high among Québec's aging communities. To ground the new repopulation policy on a strong foundation, the Town intends to encourage the development of new properties and the revival of its commercial sector.relying on its two tax credit by-laws for residential construction and downtown renewal. It also plans to continue with economic diversification to attract a new skilled labour pool to the municipality. The Town also hopes to better promote itself outside the Haut St-Laurent.An «open house» might be planned each spring.À promotional campaign targeting the population of Montréal would also be organized. In order to hope to attract new citizens, Huntingdon must rely on several assets. Its proximity to the Montréal region and the United States, its bilingual community, available employment in the manufacturing sector and an advantageous housing market are undeniable advantages, according to municipal authorities.«Unlike Hérouxville, where the municipality adopted a closed attitude, we are open to new arrivals. Our family policy will offer up to $1.5 million in tax credits to people who choose to stay with us.We've set a goal of creating 100 new residences in the next few years.» emphasized Gendron. The Town has already begun working to elaborate an eventual family policy and will convene with community organizations and citizens in a series of forums beginning in October. The former deputy concluded the interview by mentioning that the police investigation will clarify «why these people had it in for me.» Questioned by The Gleaner/La Source, Chenail refused to say if there is any connection between this plot and his past as a politician or his activities as a businessman.«It's possible that there is a link between all of this.| don’t know more than is necessary.Nothing is impossible,» he said over the telephone on Saturday morning.BOULANGERIE - BAKERY GRANT’S ‘ N pEPUIS i SINCE 1945 —— i became a nightmare for a Howick resident early last week.In his search for a John Deere tractor, he posted his interest in one offered for sale on the Internet. For the transaction to take place, the seller asked the purchaser to deposit an initial instalment of $3,000 at Western Union via e-Bay, which was done.Days passed, and the anxious citizen tried to contact the seller about making the second payment due, but was unable to.The man learned at his own expense that he had been the victim of Internet fraud orchestrated in part in England. The advertised price of the vehicle was $6,000.A complaint was filed with the Haut St-Laurent detachment of the Sûreté du Québec (SQ), which transferred the file to its economic crimes unit.Drugs found in car A young man in Ormstown is in a bad spot hands full By Patrice LAFLAMME (translated by Denise D.Hubert) Sûreté du Québec (SQ) police officers from the Beauharnois-Salaberry MRC station have been very active over the past few weeks in eradicating cannabis plants from arable and wooded lands.Over four days, agents visited the farm fields and forests of Salaberry- de-Valleyfield, St-Étienne de Beauharnois, Ste-Martine, St-Louis- de-Gonzague and St-Stanislas-de- Kostka as part of an operation called “Cisaille”.In total, 2,132 marijuana plants were seized in 52 different locations during this period.Ten other sites in Salaberry-de- Valleyfield, St-Stanislas-de-Kostka and St-Louis-de-Gonzague were visited by police on Wednesday. They eliminated 363 cannabis plants.«lt is important to remember that above and beyond simply destroying cannabis plants, the objective of the police within the “Cisaille” program is to ensure the safety of farmers struggling with criminal organizations producing cannabis on their lands.Although we are working in concert with the farmers through social contracts, it is clear that the police are not limited to this kind of collaboration,» explained Jimmy Potvin, director of the SQ’s Beauharnois-Salaberry MRC station, in a press conference Wednesday morning in Salaberry-de-Valleyfield.All of these police raids were witnessed by Robert Mailloux, president of the St-Louis de Gonzague base syndicate of the Union des producteurs agricoles. For this agricultural union organization, protecting farmers remains the cornerstone of the efforts to cooperate with police forces.«To overcome this plague, our social contract with the Sûreté du Québec makes sense because it sends a clear message to marijuana growers and doesn’t compromise the security of our members,» he declared.According to the person in charge of the investigations bureau at the SQ’s Beauharnois-Salaberry MRC station, lieutenant Sylvain Doucet, peace officers investigated, with all the legal powers and permissions required, all the fields and agricultural lands and forest lands they had reason to believe might contain cannabis crops to put an end to criminal production of narcotics, and especially to ensure the safety of farmers.THE GLEANER SEPTEMBER 30, 2009 CGI EAN Informing the community for over 145 years Local zone : Athelstan, Cazaville, Dewittville.Franklin
