an impressive number of animals placed in a variety of classes, the Borlands brought home several prestigious awards for Vandenberg Amedeo Gorgeous, who is graded 97 points 3E, the highest score which can be awarded under the Multi-breeds classification program.Led by Candace Borland, \u201cGorgeous\u201d was named Senior Champion, Grand Champion, and Best Udder at this year\u2019s fair, and was also awarded the Supreme Champion Dairy Cow award, which goes to the best competitor among all of the dairy breeds shown at the Royal.Gorgeous has had nineteen offspring, many of which were also being shown at the Royal, which was held from November 6 to I5.Steve Borland spoke with pride about eight-year- old cow, saying that \u201cthe best thing was that she repeated\u201d the Supreme win, as she had previously won it in 2007.Not only is Gorgeous the only Jersey to have received the award, she is also the only cow ever to have won it twice, an achievement which Sheila Sundborg, an employee at Rapid Bay Jerseys, said is \u201cjust incredible.\u201d The cow's quality is making waves in the dairy world as well.Borland said that he has recently received information saying that many people are suggesting that the Canadian rating system be changed, to allow a score higher than 97 to be awarded to this particular cow, which is made more impressive by the fact that she is the only Jersey to date to have received that top score.Furthermore, in a commentary on the cow's recent win, Russell Gammon, the executive secretary of Jersey Canada, called Gorgeous \u201cthe Eiffel Tower of Canadian dairy show cows,\u201d which Borland said \u201ctops it all off.\u201d The farm also received awards for Premier Breeder, Premier Exhibitor and was named the winner of the herdsmanship the chimney seemed pretty clean, but.When he came inside to vacuum whatever had fallen to the bottom, he encountered tremendous resistance in getting the cap at the bottom of the chimney's metal elbow to come off.He could- n't budge the cap - it was completely stuck - almost as if glued.He initially thought there must be a lot of creosote at the bottom that was making the two pieces of metal stick.Although this didn't make sense as the chimney seemed clean from the brushing.He was able to force off a plate in order to see what was going on inside the chimney.With great effort he pried it off and all over it was a black, molasses-like, dripping «sticky goo», many of these projects have recently been undertaken, it is encouraging to note how the projects came to finally be put into motion years after they were first proposed.There are many members of the community in the Châteauguay Valley who have come forward to support these important causes, be they municipal councilors or ordinary citizens.The common thread in the stories of these projects is that people have fought long and hard to get government funding for the projects which residents of the Valley need, either in our everyday lives or for the sake of our history, both of which apply in the case of the covered bridge at Powerscourt.It should be a source of pride and inspiration to us all that when people here see something that needs to be done, they persist in supporting the cause until the changes are made.Chantal Hortop about an inch thick and oozing all over the place.Creosote doesn\u2019t look or act like this .so what was IT?He brought it close to his nose and said, «It\u2019s sweet,» and within a second he figured out what had happened: BEES had made a few jars worth of honey in the chimney and it had all come down to the lowest point! buildings was in flames.He gave the alarm, and was soon joined by Mr.Connel.By the time they got to the scene, the fire had reached the stable, in which were 2 horses 10 milch cows, a beef cow, a bull and 3 calves.It was impossible to get near them, and all perished, save a calf which ran out, with its back badly scorched.The barns and outhouses followed and the flames swept towards the house which Friday morning this district was treated to its first real snowstorm and there was plenty of it when the school buses started out on their rounds of picking up and bringing the children to school in Huntingdon.The bus in question was one driven by Mr.Russel Milne and operating on the Connaught and New Erin Route.He had only just started on his route and had four of his charges aboard when he reached the railroad crossing near the New Erin Station.On crossing the tracks the bus straddled the track and the hind wheels began to slip in the snow and stalled right across the track.Fearing that a train might come along, Mr.Milne requested the children to get out of the bus and stand at a safe place on the roadside.This done, he again attempted to get the bus started over the tracks.In the midst of this he looked out and saw a train coming along the track toward him.He got out and ran down the track, trying to attract the attention of the engineer to get him to stop his train.Evidently the engineer could not see him as the train kept coming on.Jumping clear of the track, Mr.Mine watched the train go by to plow into the stalled bus and carry it along the tracks for about 300 feet.J0 years ago November 14, 1979 BOAT PEOPLE HERE As of last Friday, Huntingdon (and Canada) became home for the Lao family, natives of Laos in Southeast Asia who have been stateless for over two and a half years.They are Huntingdon\u2019s «Boat People» although they did not escape their war- torn country on board ship, but rather by swimming across the mile-wide Mekong River between Laos and Thailand in 1977.At that time the younger of their two daughters was a four-months\u2019 oid baby, and she too made the difficult crossing, propped up by an inflated inner tube.Since that nightmarish experience, the family, composed of father Chan Sieng, now 29, mother Fong Chao, and daughters Lin Chow, now five, and two-year old Ching Sia stayed in the Thai city of Nong Khai before flying to Canada from Bankok Nov.2.They were met at the Longue Pointe Immigration Centre by Huntingdon's Jimmy Smythe and Jimmy Miu and brought to the Valley on the evening of Thursday, Nov.8.Their arrival marked a significant milestone in the efforts of Huntingdon's Umbrella Committee, composed of members of various religious and service organizations, who have been working for months in co-operation last Wednesday morning at a home on Fertile Creek Road in Très-Saint-Sacrement.At approximately 8:30 am, officers from the Haut- Saint-Laurent detachment of the Sûreté du Québec entered the house, where five women and two men were trimming cannabis plants.In the residence, officers found 87 cannabis plants, 37 pounds of the drug, and seven grams of cannabis resin, as well as $4500 in cash.Hydroponic equipment which was being used in the operation was also confiscated.One of the individuals arrested, Robert Lalonde, a 57-year-old from Très-Saint-Sacrement, has previously appeared at the Valleyfield courthouse on charges of production of narcotics and of theft of electricity.The other suspects will receive summons to appear at the courthouse shortly.The operation was part of a police investigation which has been going on for several months.Influenza A (HIN1) New Frontiers Four individuals arrested following a failed drug transaction A failed drug transaction led to the arrest of four individuals on the evening of Sunday, November 15 in Ormstown.Responding to a intervened when individuals threatened to set a couple on fire after a drug transaction went wrong.The four individuals present got into a car.With the help of their colleagues from the Beauharnois-Salaberry detachment of the SQ, the officers were able to locate the car on Chemin de la Beauce in Sainte-Martine.The four suspects, three of whom were from Montreal and the other from Laval, were arrested on that road.Once the men, who were aged between 21 and 29 years, had been arrested, the officers found a loaded gun, a fake pistol, ten pounds of cannabis and $950 in counterfeit money in the car.The suspects appeared at the Valleyfield courthouse that same day under charges of aggravated theft, death threats, possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking, and possession of an illegal firearm.The bail hearing for the men is scheduled for November 25.The police investigation students D Chantal HORTOP The New Frontiers School Board began vaccinating students aged five to eighteen years who are enrolled in its schools on Monday, November 23.The beginning of the board's influenza A (HIN) vaccination campaign was delayed slightly due to a teachers\u2019 conference.New Frontiers collaborated with the Commission Scolaire de la Vallée-des-Tisserands, the Commission Scolaire des Grandes- Seigneuries, Riverside School Board, the ministry of health and the ministry of education to plan and coordinate their vaccination cam- palgn.All students enrolled in schools incorporated by New Frontiers are eligible to receive the vaccination, but the board's director-gener- al, Wayne Goldthorp, said they couldn't yet give an estimate of how many students would be vaccinated, since there has not yet been feedback from the schools.Since all students under the age of fourteen must have a permission slip signed by a parent in order to be vaccinated, and because the students have been on pedagogical days due to the teachers\u2019 conference, the schools have not yet been able to make an estimate of the number of students who will be inoculated.Once the campaign begins, students will be transported by school bus to vaccination centres, being divided by class groups, one school at a time.Students will be taken to the vaccination centre for the region in which the school they attend is located, which is to say that students who live in Hemmingford but who attend CVR will go to the vaccination centre in Huntingdon.Buses will leave at fifteen minute intervals and with approximately 40 to 50 students and an appropriate number of supervisors.As in the rest of the province, parents may also bring their children to the vaccination centres mois.Le ministère provincial des Transports (MTQ) a annoncé jeudi que cet ouvrage routier sera refait au grand complet.Après une attente de près de douze ans, Transports-Québec a entrepris lundi la reconstruction de ce pont, construit en 1961.Les ouvriers vont commencer par démanteler le lien routier actuel pour en bâtir un tout nouveau.«Ce pont a été construit il y a 48 ans et il s'agit d\u2019un pont acier-bois.Le type de structure qui sera reconstruit sera un portique en béton armé.Le matériel utilisé dans le cadre du chantier sera donc du béton armé», a confié au Gleaner/La Source le regroupement qui engrange le plus de voix se verra remettre une allocation.Mme Wilson a eu l'idée d'inscrire le Projet Récolte Chanceuse à cette promo- Fonds communautaire Aviva Le Projet Récolte Chanceuse sollicite des votes des citoyens tion lorsqu\u2019elle a reçu un message par courrier électronique d\u2019un autre organisme lui demandant de voter pour lui à ce même concours.Après s'être renseigné.au sujet du Fonds, elle a décidé d\u2019y faire aussi participer l'établissement.Elle a vite constaté que de grandes organisations sans but lucratif étaient aussi dans la course.Aussi, la coordonnatrice a observé que les groupes se trouvant dans des régions densément peuplées obtiennent des votes dans des laps de temps plus rapides puisqu'ils jouissent d\u2019une plus grande visibilité auprès des citoyens.Mme Wilson a fait valoir que tous les centres d'équitation thérapeutique font face à une lutte continuelle pour amasser des fonds pour poursuivre leurs opérations.Que l'établissement se trouve dans une région avec une population relativement faible ajoute au défi à relever, selon elle, tout en faisant remarquer que «tout le monde recherche de l'argent venant des mêmes gens.mais il reste que tant de gens veulent du chocolat ou des oranges ou du papier d'emballage.» Si le Projet Récolte Chanceuse ne refuse pas les dons en argent de la communauté, il est plutôt mains pour prendre part à la demi- finale de la compétition qui commence le 30 novembre.Si le centre obtient le montant, il retournerait a la communauté de différentes façons.En premier lieu, il serait directement alloué comme subvention destinée aux cavaliers puisque l'établissement perd rapidement des clients en raison de ses difficultés financières.Bien que le coût d\u2019une leçon reste minime, Mme Wilson dit regretter «ne pas pouvoir faire tout cela gratuitement.» Aussi, le complexe envisage la possibilité de créer une deuxième succursale à Hemmingford, qui permettrait à plus de Fertile Creek à Très-Saint-Sacrement.Vers 8h30, des agents du détachement du Haut Saint-Laurent de la Sûreté du Québec (SQ) ont investi la maison où se trouvaient cing femmes et deux hommes qui
