agreeing to open their doors to the public and their peers.SARAH RENNIE SATA TE DL jek ea Over 125 vears after Mr Neil Sangster the owner of Pleasant Valley Farm in Ormstown imported the first Holstein- Friesian cows to Quebec in 1886, the club celebrating this breed came together Saturday for an event as equal part social as 1t was leamung experience Participating farms, the Ferme Blancel, Mapleley Farm and Ferme Norvue, welcomed farm families from across the vast region served bv the club to tour every aspect of their operations For Steven Latulipe ot Mapleley Farm, the open house “puts everything up to a certain level It forces vou to do a lot of things in the barn that vou would not normally do.Having all of vour peers come through vour farm is satisfving,” he savs.“It does get the breeding cows that we have seen bv a lot of the other producers And they see what we do and how we operate,” he acknowledges, aware the dav 1s less about marketing and or the sale of genetics than 1t is a day to welcome the community to the barn.Mapleley Holsteins was founded in 1969.when Alfred and Norma Latulipe joined Holstein Canada with two registered females. In 2001, they were awarded the Master Breeder Shield from the national organization. The couple's son Steven purchased the majority shares in 2005, and in the process modernized the old dairy barn, saw to the atomization of all of the feeding, and the construction of à cold heifer barn."Here we prioritize the cows. The cows make the milk and the milk pays the bills,” says Latulipe, explaining his family's success on the farm “My father is a breeder who has been breeding for years and years and he excels at it.This is his life's passion and he Young farmers took part in the Huntingdon, Ormstown, Beauharnois Holstein Club open house tour at Mapleley Farm in Saint-Agnes-de-Dundee.:- has always put a lot of emphasis on the cows - quality cows, good legs and good udders produce good milk,” he adds Presently Mapleley Farm consists of 155 head of cattle, with around 55 milking. This produces about 3.500 litres of milk every two days.As for the farm tour, “It gets everybody out.I enjov the day, but it is an incredible amount of work to get everything up to a certain level,” he smiles, obviously content to have his family's work on display. For younger farmers, the farm tours represent an opportunity get a look at what everyone else has in their barns."At 4-H for example, we go to see what innovative things people have and to learn any practices that we can bring back to our own farms,” says Quebec 4- H President Mathieu Rouleau Of course, he laughs, “it’s nice sometimes ARR RENTE to get out of the barn, see other people and look at nice cows.” For Sebastien Crete of the Ferme Norvue, the tour represented a chance for farmers to get together and talk shop.“It brings us advantages — new ways of thinking and people share their ideas with us,” he says.In many ways, the day also served as an eye-opener for visiting farmers and public alike.“I would rather have people to my farm to see the overall business than bring three of four cattle to a show. Here they can see every cow in the herd and at the same time, it is a low period in the year for work.Instead of showing cattle in the summer when you have haying to do, I prefer to have open doors,” says Gilles Leblanc, on welcoming his peers to the Ferme Blancel. His only lament was that the event did not bring out more curious visitors from the general public. 2 The Gleaner - La Source, Monday.
