secret nobody knows but Smoky hisself «'s +» S0 long, Me- Goo.: CRICKET CHIRPS Harry M.Williams This is a”hail and farewell to cricket and summer.Summing it all up, it has been a most disappointing and unsatisfying cricket season. We cannot look back and see one bright spot unless it has been the renewal of summer contacts and friendships.Crickets itself has been made up of unsatisfactory, unfinished games, ‘mediocre umpiring, arbitrary rulings and not a few heart-burn- ings. Not one constructive thing has been done to ensure the future of cricket. The juveniles upon whom the game relies have never been so neglected.Cricket as a whole has never been so sloppily conducted.Late starts and utter disregard for the supporters.of the game seem to stand out uppermost along with a schedule that was poorly arranged, began too late and ran too far into precarious weather. One of the great farces was the Davidson cup finals, To begin with, a neutral ground was not chosen.Appeals to the umpire about light were not over-ruled.A substitute fielder practically robbed oné team of it’s chances of retaining the cup.Under the rule that only players with certain qualifications may participate — and the rule is justifiable — one player.had to fly from Vancouver for 14 minutes of play, so we are given to under- stand, to participate in the third bite at the apple. One would almost imagine this was a Hollywood personal appearance. If that and the whole conformation of the four game final was not playing under disabilities, please show us.On “the top-of this an- ardent cricket devotee and dispenser of cricket largesse, his wife and dog (on lead) were refused entrance to the sacred precincts of the cup final grounds.Lest it be thought that we are churlish and lobsided in our view point our heartiest congratulations to Westmount on their magnifi- cient showing for the season.Might we suggest that if cricket is to survive it must take stock between now and the opening of next season, More attention must be paid to the young stock farm.A lot of the dead wood must be cleared out principally in the executive end of the game.Self appointed arbiters and dictators must not only be discouraged but totally eliminated.Might we at this point suggest a pleasant winter pastime — a school for umpires with an examination for physical, mental and practical knowledge of the game fittedness before they again don the white coats?We-hate to wind up the season with such melancholy dirge but to one who loves the game, it’s traditions, valued associations and friendships 1938 has been a keen disapointment.PRAY AGAINST BUGS Mass prayer meetings to ask divine help in fighting a mealy bug plague are being held throughout Natal.«sk for of living and what we make them. Our muscles and our organs are a reflection of man's previous hygienic habits. The fune- tion of our various organs, the strength of our muscular tissues and nerve fibers, are a result of our diet, our personal habits, and our exercise, Because of this modern ‘mechanical age’ of living the lack of organic vigor is outstanding. This is particularly true in the city, where a noticeable trend in physical degeneration is primarily due to sedentary employments, which limits necessary muscular exercise. The man who sits at an office all day, is* s this better health and longivity of life.‘There are various forms in which this sedentary life is made evident; a few of them being — protruding abdomen, flat chest, poor posture, lack of endurance — as indicated by shortness of breath — even indigestion, headaches, and constipation, (a general organic inefficiency.) It seems that the evolutionary processes of man have place him in the category of the ‘out of doors’.In order to overcome this physical deterioration’ then man should adjust himself to just that state, However, the ‘out of doors’ is not practical or accessible to all; therefore, the gymnasium, with its various programs, would be admirably utilized, The regularity of systematic exercise and training has done and will do much to overcome the ‘confinement’ in which man is finding himself today.Often the average business-man thinks that after a hard day's mental work he is much too tired to commit himself to any physical exertion. But this is definitely untrue; it is a universal slogan — that a change is as good as a rest — and how much better the rest when this change is of a recreational nature. One should enthusiastically exercise with vigor and regularity. Not too strenuously in the morning or in the evening, as sleep is more restful during normal circulation. The best time to exercise is from four p.m.to six p.m.It also should be kept in mind there is no one exercise which will insure health, and often abnormalities result from too much specialization.Variation together with recreation will usually accomplish the desired physiological results, and most of all don’t worry, but be completely relaxed and enjoy your exercise as you take it.If one does not have the opportunity to exercise daily it is better to divide the time on alternative days; being sure to keep up to the minimum numbers of hours, which is about four.More frequent exercise will make for better development and a healthier body.A few thixgs to keep in mind when exercising; one should begin with a very light warm-up, working up to more vigorous exercise, then finishing quietly.Should corrective exercises be needed, practice them first before becoming tired.Heavy exercise will slow up coordination but tend for geater strength, while lighter exercises will make for proper proportions between the corrective and the re- creative forms, The strength, endurance, skill and coordination of the muscle is best accomplished by the ‘happy medium’ between small amounts of trenuous effort and large amounts of lighter exercise. For the best results from exercise one should keep in mind, ‘systematic regularity’.Because without these two half of our efforts are futile, Louis Trudell Sold To Montreal Canadiens Chicago.Chicago Black Hawks of the National Hockey League, Stanley Cup hockey champions, announced Louie Napoleon Trudell, veteran left wing, had been traded to Montreal Canadiens for Joffre Desilets, 25- ‘year-old.rookie right wing: from Stratford, Ont.- Bill Tobin, president of the Hawks, said.the deal was the first { several contemplated: to | strenghthen the champions for the deferise of their title this wi .6 “years of play’ with [rules and‘ Se.Paul.Desilsts had ‘| been with.the ‘Canadiens two years Cleveland Will Rebuild Team For 1939 Season Cleveland.— Because of their collapse in the pennant race, Alva Bradley, president of the Cleveland Indians, announced that five ähd maybe“ more regulars of the Indians will be traded and the team completely revamped in a drive for a 1939 pennant.Oscar Vitt will be: retained as manager of the club, Bradley said.He has proved satisfactory. On the block are Lyn Lary, regular shortstop; Julius’ Solters, outfielder; John Kromet, second string second .baseman; Sammy Hale, first string second sacker, and Earl Averill, hard-hitting outfielder.rer TORRENTIAL: RAIN infi r Bi Don’t assoclate exercise as work, cola i Enjoy ifs OSC 6H un otodun ed 1 have found the wordi.castssigsssissssnsees OR hidden in the advertisement of.soussnauseuss céasnasionnsquilsace | thi e coming week age judy sion as Final oF the cs th warding of passes.to.the Theatre, oO H.O o8 0 O oS "]
