Montreal has been ablaze with flags and buntings these last few days in anticipation of the visit of Their Majesties, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth. At no previous time in this city’s history have our streets been so gaily or so extensively decorated — we are truly giving our Sovereigns a royal welcome! So great has the enthusiasm become that traffic was at a standstill on the royal route last Sunday as tens of thousands of motorists attempted to drive over it to view the pageantry, and so blocked the streets that special details of police had to be put on traffic duty.Everywhere one sees patriotic emblems—il- luminated g'ass crowns, coloured lights and flares, flags, bunting, crests, photos and paintings of Their Majesties -—— on automobiles, buses, tram cars, trucks, bicvcles, buildings of all descriptions, telephone po'es.Truth to tell, many Canadians are surprised at their own enthusiasm. We are a ph'egmatic people, and it was generally believed that we would give The King and Oueen a warm and sincere, but und~monstrative welcome. But our hospitality became more ex pressive as they set foot on our sail, the whol» country was ablaze with colour and enthusiasm, QUEBEC WOMEN DON'T LAUGH! Two hundred years ago, in Britain, women were discriminated against a'most as much as they are today, in Quebec. For instance, in the Year of Grace 1700, the British Parliament enacted the following choice legislation: “That all women, of whatever age, rank, profession, or degree, whether virgin, maid, or widow, that shall from and after such act, impose upon and betray into matrimony any of His Majesty's loyal subjects, by means of scents ,paints, cosmetic washes, artificial teeth, false hair, Spanish wool, iron stays, hoops, or high-heeled shoes, shall incur the penalty of the law now in force against witchcraft and like misdemeanors, and that the marriage shall, upon conviction, stand null and void.” People today laugh at the ridiculousness of such laws, as they laugh at anything that smacks of burlesque. But the women of Quebec don’t laugh, for there are on the statutes of this province many laws equally as vicious as that quoted above. For examp'e, there is the case of the man who deserted his wife and young children. Many years later he returned, broke and disreputable, to find that in his absence his wife had made a success of | the farm and was educating the chi'dren and putting a little money away.He sold the farm at auction, seized her savings, and deserted her a second time, leaving her and the children absolutely destitute except for the charity of the neighbours. That is one example of scores that cou'd be mentioned Only in Ouebec are such things legally possible in this country. How long, do you imagine, such laws would be tolerated, once women had the right to vote?GREAT BOOSTS FOR CANADA For the past quarter century the intercst of British business leaders in Canada has been somewhat superseded by thé Americans, due in some measure at least to the much greater publicity this country has had in the United States than in England.Because we have been better known among Americans than among the British, the former have been more active in taking advantage of the opoortunities this country affords to investors. The visit of The King and Queen to Canada has been made the sub‘ect of a special edition of The London Times in which the opportunities open to Bri- tich business men in Canada are stressed. The edition is nuite the best of its kind yet published in the O'd Country on the subject of Canada, we are informed, and a glance throunh its panes ma"es that statement easv to believe.Fxcellent views of various parts of this country, toazther with maps, azcom- nany the artic'es, A greeting from the Canadian Prime Minister, and articles by Hon.Vincent Macsey, the Hiah Crmmissioner in london, and hv Rt.Hon.R.B.Bennett on srme of his Canadian exn=riences, open the edition. There are a'sn articles by, Hon.Fernand Rinfret, Hon.Frnest Lapointe, Leon Marcier Gouin, and others on various aspects of the Canadian scene and our relations with the Motherland; an article bv Mrs.Pierre Cas- grain on Women's Work in Canada; an article by Hon.Robert Manion, and one by Hon.lan Mackenzie.Canadian business and finance are also dealt with at length, while there are articles on the railroads by both Sir Edward Beatty and Mr.Hungerford.The format of the issue is such as to present the material in most attractive style. Some two million copies have been distributed in Great Britain —publicity of inestimable va'ue to Canada. The delay in the Royal Party reaching Canada is unfortunate, but understandable. It is probable that when the Empress of Australia left England, no one outside the ship's officers and the officials of the Admiralty knew what course she would take, and there were no doubt good reasons for sending her far north of the route the commercial lines are taking at this time of the year.STOPME.IF YOU'VE HEARD | THIS ONE | Example Johnny (looking out of the window): “Oh, mother, a motor car has just gone by as big as u barn!” Mother: “Johuny, why do you; exaggerate so terribly?I've told you forty million times about taat habit of yours, and it doesn't do a dit of good!”—Pasadena Post. One By One “Before we were murried Henry told me that I could have all the servants ! The trailer contained enough room for two horses. This was done because Maiden Brave is less nervous when traveling in the company of another animal.Il was air-cooled by means of a noiseless machine and could also be heated in case of cold nights while the company was enroute to a far-off location.' After many tests, the mechanics found that regulation plane tires, such as are used on Main- liners, would eliminate all bumpx and shakes.Next to the horse, on either side, were padded walls in case of sharp turns, RETURN OF BEAU GESTE Down in Buttercup Valley rear Yuma, Arizona, the cast of “Beau Geste” is on location, Buttercup Valley is America’s most perfect reproduction of the Sahara Desert.Gary Cooper, Brian Donlevy and J.Carrol Naish head the cast of thousands.THRILL, PACKED ADVENTURE One of the mightiest romances to flame across the screen ir “Union Pacific,” just released by Cecil B.DeMille, and which is due into Loew's soon. This thundering drama of America’s empire builders stars Joel McCrea and Bar- hara Stanwyck and features the ever popular Akim Tamiroff.+ Madelcine Carroll, first in the hearts of beauty-appraisers everywhere, returns to the screen for a fling at romance with handsome Fred MacMurray, her new leading man, in Paramount's “Cafe Society,” which is now showing at the Westmount United Theatre until Saturday.Shirley Ross, as chief runner-up for MacMurray’s affee- tions, completes the starving trio.Miss Carroll, who has climbed to screen fame via* The Case Against Mrs.Amex,” “The General Died at Dawn,” “Lloyds of London,” “Prisoner of Zendu” and “Blockade,” gets ample opportunity to show off the devastating blonde beauty which prompted one famous artist to call her “lovelier than Romney's Lady Hamilton"— his highest tribute.Cast as a millionairess of New York's smartest set, she wears more than twenty striking new costumes especially Carroll, MacMurray Are Together In Comedy Hit designed for her by Edith Head.Running the gamut from yachting costumes to glamorous evening gowns, the clothes ropresent the perfect wardrobe for the momber of “Cafe Society.” The romance of Miss Carroll and MacMurray, who plays a Soung newspapermen, is one of the highest-geared to reach the screen in many a month. It goes into action when, assigned to cover her arrival on the “Queen Mary,” he treats her so contemptuously that she waits her time to get even with him.It comes when she succeeds in getting him to fall in love with her and marries him simply to crash the gossip columns, THirty-seven thousand agricul.tural workers from Italy Have gone to Germany to work on farms this year, den re ee 4 THE SHOE THE (Corner Victoria Ave.) RECENCY CARRYING A COMPLETE LINE OF:— | eMACFARLANE eJ.& T.BELL eSLATER SHOE NEW LOCATION 4863 SHERBROOKE ST., W.Quality Gives Flavour SALADA TEA SHOE STORE THE SHOE eWIG WAM CAMP SHOES DE.6277 “Irn mm Up O'Connor” === a cop "GOES TWICE AS-FAR] EPSI-{OLA A great cola.“drink witha great name that protects you from imitations LES i LLL FT IIS Ss LASSI SESS 9 2 30-03.Bottles One Glass Free SSUILIISSSSSALIIIEUL 11) S110 1177 1 P4571 of Mr.and Mrs.A.R.M.Boulton spent last week-end in Quebec City.Mrs.T.A.Rankin Smith left yesterday for Ottawa, to attend the Royal Gurden Party.Miss Muriel Joseph sailed on Saturday aboard the Letitia, for an extended stay in England.Mr.and Mrs.Murray Chipman opened their summer camp on Lake Commandant at the Seign- fory Club last week-end.Mrs.F.Grey Robinson and Miss Isobel Robinson, who left early in December to spend the winter in Barbados, have returned to Montreal, Mr.and Mrs.W.Crosbie Baber have arrived from New York to SPECIAL REDUCTIONS SPRING HATS Straws and Summer Felts from $3 up NEW ARRIVALS! Resist Wilt Easiest Variety To Grow If you have trouble growing asters, why not try some of the wiltresistant strains this year? They are a family of asters which have been grown in soil infected by the wilt disease (most common ailment of asters) and have shown ability to throw off the disease and survive where others die.: They have exceptional vigor, and seem to overcome all difficulties better than the standard bred strains. They are not resistant to any specific disease except wilt, and where the yellows disease is prevalent, not all the wilt resistant plants will escape. But some will, and in general it has been found that those who have trouble growing asters get far better results with the resistant strains.Nearly all the types and colors are now obtainable in wilt resistant strains.A succession of asters may be obtained in two ways— by starting the latest types early in the house or in a frame and making successive plantings until they may be sown in the open ground, or by sowing early, mid-season and late types at the same time. The giant branching type is one of the most satisfactory and the + CONSULT SWISS GRADUATE FOR YOUR For Estimates or Other chrysanthemum, and are almost as large. The petals are curled and twisted into a soft ball of delicate color, supported on a straight stem, which makes them ideal for indoor decoration.Like the rose, a single bloom will show off well in a vase.More sensational is the California sunshine type, with its daisy- like contour which belies the aster heritage.Their loosely placed outside petals usually contrast in color with the creamy yellow or blue centres, and they grow up to WA.1531 three feet tall.WE CARRY A COMPLETE LINE OF Store DE.9898 ROLAND C.HILL, Manager 4841 Sherbrooke St.West at Garden” STINSON REEB SUPPLY CO., LTD.5585 Delorimier Ave.DO.4691 Floral Color Is Important In our small gardens, classifications tend to disappear. The orthodox types of garden design become strangely mixed. The formal and the informal, the natural and architectural, often mingle, and, strange to say, the effect may be delightful. It should be said that the controlling purpose of modern garden design is to display the beauty of the flowers and plants which grow in the garden. There can be no beauty in a garden greater than the beauty of its plants; and the design is good in proportion to its success in displaying at their best the natural grace, form and colour of the garden's horticultural treasures, This trend toward simplicity of garden design is in harmony with dress design, interior decoralion and other branches of the decorative arts. And like the others, the garden relies for much of its effect upon the studied use of color. There are still to be found in our formal gardens geometrical beds and bi-symmetrical grouping of ornaments which might have been copied from mid-Victorian models; but nowhere nowadays, except in public parks and railway station grounds, sadly out of date is the carpet-bedding fashion followed, in which plants were required to surrender their individual charm and become merely pigments with which a gardener embroidered curious patterns on the lawn, Patterns which would have been recognized as commonplace or ugly had they been woven in textiles were supposed lo acquire merit from the fact that to make them hundreds of beautiful plants were sacrified.Formal beds now do not call for stiff and formal planting, but in them flowers are grown in their natural grace and beauty, so arranged, as to both form and color, that the feeling of balance essential to any good design is preserved, Such arrangements are dependent upon skilful color grouping for their major charm; and where can be found a greater opportunity for the pleasing use of color .than in a garden?Flowers are color. They afford an infinite range of material ready to the hand of the artist who would combine them in a picture. It is not strange that the wave of color consciousness which has spread over the world and go strongly incluenced our fashions in dress and decoration should focus in our gardens, Don’t let spring get too far advanced before reseeding the bare spots in the lawn, and applying plant food.—…—— If your perennial border was stragzly and barren in spots last year, plan ahead of time for annuals to fill in the dull places.Make your garden habit a hobby by specializing in a few flowers and vegetables.PAGS FIVE "GARDEN SUPPLIES LAWN MOWERS Wal made ay running mowers vith 14 inch 6-95 MADE BY TAY basement, sharing space with offices, uutop- sy room, plaything - storeroom, etc.+ Need More Accommodation “More accommodation must be provided for physiotherapy, occupational therapy, recreational therapy, all very important to children recovering from sickness. The hospital needs an entirely new X-ray piant, and more space fort it an dalso for kitchens, laundry and other services, More ward space, to permit dividing the children into groups of six or eight, must be provided, so that segration can be assured when contagious cases are discovered.“This is a hospital which helps children of all classes, races and creeds without question.Last vear in 93 per cent of the cases, the hospital treated the patients free of cost because of their inability to pay, or received
