Duckett Tuesday morning in the case of Mrs.I.R.F.Fisher, who was fatally burned by tar.in the kitchen of her home, 17 Winchester avenue, shortly before 11 a.m.on Monday.Mrs.Fisher wns badly burned all over the body whep a can of thr on the kitchen stove burst into flume, selling fire to her clothes. The 68-ycar-old resident was rushed to the Western Division of the Montreal General, Hospital following first-aid treatment by the Westmount Fire Depart ment. She died there Monday night.Tar On Stove R, PF.Fisher, husband of the victim, had placed a large can of tar on the stove to melt in order that he could make repairs to the roof of the dwelling. He was on the roof when the accident occurred. It is believed that when the tar started to boil over Mrs.Fisher tried to remove the pot from the stove.Mry, Jamilton Sherlock and FE.B.Blandford, of 19 and 21 Winchester avenue, respectively, rushed into the house when they heard the screams of the woman, They found her on the floor enveloped in flames when they reached the kitchen.Try To Save Her The neighbors managed to smother the flames by enveloping the woman with bed clothes, but not before she was badly burned from head to foot. They then summoned police and firemen, Westmount police and firemen, fed by Chief Gough, Deputy Chief Burriss and Captain Byford, are rived on the scene a few moments later and attended the vietim pend ing arrival of an ambulance, The flaming tar started a small blaze in the flooring of the kite chen, hut firemen succeeded in extinguishing the outhreak before serious material damage was caused, THURSDAY, OCTOBER 12, 1939 CANADA TO BE EMPIRE'S AIR CENTRE The news, issued simultaneous'y from London and Ottawa, to the effect that Canada is to be made the centre for training practically all the Empire’s airmen, emphasizes the degree of co-operation that has been achieved among the various nations of the Commonwealth in the short time that we have been at war.It is stated that twenty-five thousand pilots will get their finishing training here every year, and the plan will give the Allies an overwhelming superiority in the air within two years.Canada is ideally situated for such training. The great breadth of this country will permit long range practice flights by bombing squadrons, out of range of the enemy, until the men are ready to go to the front. This training, coincident with the building of planes in this country, will give England and France an inexhaustible supply of men and machines.CANADIAN WOOL Why should Canada, one of the greatest agricultural countries in the world, have to worry about a shortage of wool?Yet this is the case.Great Britain has taken all of Australia’s supply, and is releasing 750,000 tons “for export to Canada. This solves the problem for .the time being.Canada’s predicament is caused because farmers have become less partial to the raising of sheep. This can best be illustrated by what has happened in Ontario.Back before the turn of the century, in 1895 to be exact, this province had 2,022,735 sheep.Twenty years later the number had decreased to 908,- 095, and while it has topped 1,000,000 a few years since, in 1938 there were only 858,262 sheep in Ontario.Yet Ontario has more of .this variety of livestock than any other prov- .ince in Canada, Alberta coming second with 833,800.The total for all Canada is 3,415,- +000.Wool is a commodity in demand during wartime. It is needed especially for uniforms. This demand is reflected in the prices being paid for sheep and lambs in 1914.1918.The average in Ontario jumped from $6.67 in the first year of the war to $16.14 in 1918 and $16.45 in 1919.This was a greater percentage increase than that for other livestock.Horses were actually less valuable at the end of the war than at its start, the figures being $145 un apart from milk cows, averaged $30.81 in 1914 and $45.52 in 1918, while hogs were $10.15 in 1914 and $18.80 in the last year of the war. These figures are the averages for all anes of livestock, rather than the pricas paid for those marketed, but they show the trend. That for sheep and lambs in 1938 was 36.76.If farmers want to take a hint from past experience, then the raising of sheep can we'l be increased. They are a dual purpose stock, providing both food and wool, two commodities of particular va'ue in days of war.Furthermore, it does not take long to get returns.Lambs born in the spring will provide both food and wool in the autumn to say nothing of the fleeces the older sheep give annually, SPREADING COMMUNISM Russia did not grab off a portion of Poland merely to increase her territory and population. Both in area and numbers of peop'e, she had no need of expansion. One of the objects was to promote the spread of Communism, Soviet authorities have lost no time in attempting to Communize that part of Poland now under their control.Propaganda trucks have accompanied ‘the troops.Communist literature is being thrust into the hands of all in the newly-acquired territory.Communism, in one sense, means Godlessness. Most of the Poles are Catholic. They will now be asked to worship® Stalin and to forget their church.|f they do not do so, the consequences are apt to be harsh. Those Poles who have come under German control are little happier, in respect to religion. There is no freedom of religion in Germany either. If there is anyone still in doubt as to what the Allies are fighting, they can find it in what is happening in Poland. The fight is against being forced into either Naziism or Communism, alike as they are in many respects. The battle is for freedom, including that of religion.EGGS AND CHIPS News filtering back from the Western Front intimates that eggs and chips are going to be a staple article of diet for the soldiers.Fried eggs with French fried potatoes made life bearable for more than one weary soldier in the last war.The French women keep a large pot of boiling fat on the stove. They also have a good supply of potatoes all peeled and cut into slices.Eggs are in the cupboard. For a quarter a soldier could get himself a nice, hot, appetizing dish of fried eags and sizzling potatoes.Washed dawn with coffee or something else, those eggs and chips tasted like the meals that mother used to make.Eggs and chips are on the cards for this war, too. That will be welcome news to the boys who may have been wondering how they 1914 and $131 in 1918.Cattle, were going to fare in the back areas.THE WESTMOUNT EXAMINER DEDICATION OF COLORS WILL BE service would be in addition to the league's regular work of supervising the cultivation of over 2,000 garden allotments for the benefit of full and part-time unemployed men, unemployables, and men on small pensions, This particular branch of the league's work is expected to expand due to the steadily rising prices of foodstuffs, War Gardens The league will give assistance to those who wish to cultivate a garden plot. This will take the form of supplying planting plans; advice regarding securing permission for the use of ground; publication of monthly bulletins containing information for the at first they fainted. His evening silhouette is strongly re: miniscent of Queen Alexandra's day; he shows a plaid taffeta party frock that has more than a hint of the one she wore as the Princess of Wales.Wide shoul ders with ruffles and bow trimmings, and even large puffs are also in evidence.Mainbocher does them and Alix, departing from her vsual sleek line, introduces this Edwardian note along with her draped romantic Grecian effects.* * * To freshen up a room economically, use wall slip covers. One wall out of the four is enough and forms a good crntrast in the room. The length of the fabric should be matched, sewed together and hemmed.Sew metal eyelets in both top and bottom hems, spaced about twelve inches apart.Insert screw eyes immediately below ceiling cornice and above baseboard.Lace cord through each screw eye and metal eyelet and then tie with a small bow.Variety Of Fish Dishes Breaks Monotony Of Meals It's almost automatic, isn’t it, to think of dinner in terms of meat, potatoes and some other vegetable? The only thing is to decide which kind of meat and what other vegetable so that meals become almost routine. Why not break the monotony of such meals and as a start, think of fish instead of meat? There is such a wide variety of fish available to the Canadian housewife at all times that it can be served frequently and not grow tiresome. And then there are so many ways of serving it, such delicious garnishes to accompany it that a whole new field of culinary exploration is opened up.As the next step in getting away from routine, serve a salad or cole slaw instead of a cooked vegetable. That is a particularly appropriate step at this time of the year.As for desserts, there is no reason to be in a rut there, but if you are, the recipe below will please you. With this suggested menu, ROBINTEX « SUITINGSg IF YOU WANT A SUIT THAT WILL MAKE-UP WELL-N WEAR WELL—AND KEEP ITS SHAPE " ASK YOUR TAILOR FOR ROBINTEX say goodbye to boredom and start a new dinner table era. There is nothing elaborate or difficult to prepare,~—it's just a change for the better.Menu Finnan Haddie Delmonico Cucumber and Tomato Salad , Crimson Crystal Dessert Sponge Cake Coffee or Tea Finnan Haddie Delmonico 1% pounds finnan haddie; adventure drama of the Sudan, opening Saturday at the York United Theatre for a four day engagement, were required to charge down on the men of the East Surreys, dressed in old-fashioned uniforms to represent the British troops who defeated the Mahdi. These Dervishes were largely members of the Sudan Horse, one of the smartest regiments in the country. For the film they agreed to discard their uniforms and dress in the scanty clothing of the Dervishes of 40 years ago.But there was great difficulty in making them agree to ‘die” for the camera lens.In fact, most natives object to “play” at dying, probably because of fear and superstition. It always takeà high-pow- ered diplomacy to persuade them to the viewpoint of the picture- makers.Once having agreed to die, the Dervishes did the job so thoroughly that when the charge was over and long after the cameras had stopped they remained lying on the ground. No amount of prodding or shouting made any difference. They had to be picked up eventually by the other Dervishes, who had survived in the scene, and carried back to the starting places before they would consent to live again.“Four Feathers,” speuk of the three great B's in music everyone knows we mean Bach, Beethoven and Brahms. The first two are more often written about and played than Brahms and many people are not as familiar with his music outside of the musicians’ sphere, It was due to Schumann that Brahms was hailed as the successor Beethoven and his music given recognition through Schumann's favourable criticism in various journals, Strange as it may seem Johannes Brahms (1833- 1897) music did not go through that youthful stage which so many other composers did but was mature and great from the Very beginning, He was born in Hamburg and although his father was a musician, a contrabass player, he opposed his son continuing in the same profession. However he overcame his father’s dislike and became a pianist and composer.Brahms was a serious person but had n good sense of humour and —unlike most musicians was very even-tempered and well-palanced.Music that is strictly classical in melody and structure belongs to this fine composer and often one does not appreciate his works until a second hearing because he is in a class by himself, although his music is founded on the traditions of his two great predecessors but his solo works are more orchestral in style. Those of you who have heard Brahms famous Hungarian Dances must be reminded that these melodious compositions are not really original since they are the folk tunes of Hungary set to music.Among his own compositions, his symphonies are included in the repertoire of every reputable orchestra and sometimes “All Brahms” concerts are given. His piano works are very popular among which the Sonata in F Minor is a great favourite with concert artists, also many of the Rhapsodies, Ballades, Variations, Scherzos, Intermezzos and two concertos, His “Requiem” is a monumental work, so difficult that it is only well done if performed “by vocalists and instrumentalists of thorough training.Brahms as a composer leans towards the intellectual side rather than the dramatic and appreciation of his works is rapidly becoming so noticable that audiences often stand up and cheer as this writer remembers it happening last sea- on after a splendid performance of the First Symphony in C Minor. It was wonderful to witness such _ apontancous enthusiasm.ONG RECITAL WILL AID RED CROSS WORK + A song recital in aid of the
