Westmount civic employees and staffs of bank branches located within the boundaries of West- mount had reason to envy workers holding similar positions in Montreal City proper and in a number of suburban municipalities on Tuesday.Montreal, closely followed by Verdun, Outremont, and other Island centres, declared the day a civic holiday with the result that municipal buildings and banks were closed.- Westmount, however, failed to follow suit and the City Hall, Vie- toria Hall, the Public Library and all departments operated by the city carried on as usual.According to law banks are obliged to accommodate customers on legal business days and those situated within the limits of the city remained open. The announcement by Montreal's Council declaring Tuesday a holiday, was not made official until last Friday, and as a good many business firms had arranged to Jet a portion of their staffs remain away from work Saturday, a certain amount of confusion resulted, As no official announcement regarding the matter was made by civic officials here, city and bank employees took it for granted that they were expected to report to work as usual.CRAFT GLUB IN FINE DISPLAY OF war, but proud of the fact that we are ranged with the other cubs alongside the lion in the fight for human freedom. Our Empire has been at war before, but almost without exception our wars have been forced upon us and we have entered them unwillingly and with little enthusiasm for the job at hand.We have not cooked up * make excuse for highly trained, heavily armed forces to make wars of aggression and conquest; we have usually gone to war unprepared, against odds, to defend a principle.Hitler himself, in his book “My Battle” says the British fight best when they fight for a principle. The world has seen many Empires, founded upon military conquest, rise and fall. But ours has come to us, not because we have been a military nation, but because of two great, predominant traits of the Anglo-Saxon—the love of adventure and a genius for trade and commerce. It was these fraits that the farthest parts of the globe, that won India, Africa, Australia, and Canada.country in the world boasts an organization comparable to the Royal Geographical Society? What has made Britain the greatest seafaring sisterhood of nations in the world’s history? It is that urge to see what is beyond the distant horizon, the restless longing to explore beyond the distant hills. It was this racial characteristic, for instance, that drove woodsmen over the Alleghanies into the valley of the Ohio, where they ran afoul of a detachment of French soldiers in a started the war that resulted in Canada becoming British.Of that war it was written: "The French had soldiers, but the British had settlers, and in the long run the axe of the woodsman will vanquish the musket and the sword.” Fight we will when we must; but only when we must.Today we are at war because war was a last resort. We tried every means available to prevent it, including risking our reputation for honour and courage. We turned the other cheek to every pompous dictator who wanted to make political capital out of twisting the lion's tail. But eventually we had to take the sword in our own defence, and in the defence of everyone who loves liberty.were not enthusiastic for war, te be am pointed out in his Christmas message, no sacrifice is too high to pay for freedom.FILM OF THE ROYAL VISIT Citizens of Montreal are looking forward with keen anticipation to made on the occasion of the visit of the King and Queen to this country Wherever the film has roused great acclaim.Toronto Saturday Night, a paper of reserved enthusiasms, calls it the most emotion-stirring film ever produced by any government agency agencies, and one of the best films of its type produced anywhere. It is pointed out that, entirely apart from its pr King and Queen-—its scenic beauty makes it outstanding.Against this photographic background the great reception Canadians gave Their Majesties from Quebec to Halifax.NEW CANADIAN FLAG Canadians learned with terest the past week that First Canadian contingent, arriving in England, carried a flag which ficial flag of Canada. The fact is interesting, both in view of the discussion that has taken place in Parliament from subject, and because all t have distinctive flags of their own.Unofficially Canada has had a flag for many years—the red ensign, or Lancashire duster, plus the Canadian consulates and trade offices all over the world, but it has never been officially adopted by Parliament. The subject has invariably been ‘talked out’ in the House some of the designs submi cious both from an artistic and heraldic point of view, and because at times the idea has been sponsored by groups whose object was the breaking, by slow degrees nection. But Canada needs a flag, from a practical as well as a sentimental viewpoint. And now our soldiers have taken one to England that is both correct and beautiful. The Union Jack holds the place of honour, of course, symbolizing our British connection.Opposite it is the fleur-de-lys of old France, while beneath are three scarlet maple leaves—the whole on a background, or field, of white, that, having been baptized in ‘battle, the flag will be made the
