yesterday that Christmas mail in Westmount in 1939 was the heaviest for years, but that delivery was speeded up materially by a post office staff far larger than that placed on duty here during past Christmas seasons. While the regular number of 24 carriers were as usual augmented during the period from Dec.20 to Dec.26 by one man apiece, a third staff of 24 men were engaged to route the mail in the Western and Greene avenue post office in which all letters addressed to Westmount residents receives its final sorting. The four wicket clerks at the post office were assisted by three additional men who greatly speeded yp the selling of stamps, weighing of letters an etc.The distribution of parcels was carried out by one regular truck and five extra vehicles.Post office officials credited the new system of placing large staffs of extra employees on routing work.as being largely responsible for the increased efficiency. They relieve the carrier of the work which he has had to undertake in the past thereby giving him a much better chance of completing his route, assisted by a helper, practically on regular schedule, TO SPEAK HERE Commander Edward Ellsberg will speak on “The addressing the Westmount Rotary Club at its regular weekly luncheon meeting in Victoria Hall yesterday. No person whose sole interests are in himself, his family or his business, can ever enjoy real contentment, the speaker declared. He addressed the meeting on the topic, “My Philosophy of Life.” Mr.Anderson expressed his belief that there was a purpose behind the creation of every species cf life even though this fact was often doubted by mankind.* Declaring that the world’s natural resources could support a Population 100 times its present size, the speaker deplored the fact that nature and labor ‘from which comes all wealth” had been kept separated. This, he considered.was man’s greatest crime., Mr.Anderson expressed the be- “ef that good ‘an come from all human ventures, no matter how sordid they may at first appear. He gave as an example the Julius Richardson Convalsscent Hospital I at Chateauguay which was developed as a memorial io the late Julius Richardson who was critically wounded in the last Great War on June 17, 1916, by his father, W.S.Richardson.At first the centre was used as a rest home for wounded soldiers but was later taken over by service clubs and converted into a health resort which served as a medium to restore health to children whose parents could not afford to give them summer vacations.Mr.Anderson spoke at length of the work carried on by the hospital, stating that it had provided for 3,300 children during the past 13 years. In that entire time not a single child died there, he stated. The speaker showed the Rotar- jans à number of slides taken at the site which gave views of the various buildings and the recrea- -tional facilities, including a large swimming pool, provided for the children.Mr.Anderson was introduced by Dr.George Little and thankes by Rev.Gordon Burgoyne.s.B.Cuthbert, vice-president, occupied the chair working as air raid wardens and FINNISH WOMEN BACK MEN AT flotilla oi stately ships steam into a cloud of mist and swirling snowflakes, Although it is broad daylight, so murky is the weather that in a “ev minutes the transports and :heir convoy Are as completely lost to the handful of watchers ashore es if it were midnight. The Second Contingent of Canada’s Active Service Force has sailed towards the far flung battle fre:: of Europe. On shore che spirit of Christmas js abroad.Holly wreaths hang in wiriows and crowds cluster about :he counters where myriad col- « ‘ul objects are displayed. But out in the harbour there is stern business afoot. There are no bands playing, There are no cheering t' ~ongs.Only overhead, swooping low to attain visibility through the snowstorm, airplanes roar as ship by ship each unit of the ar- nada weighs anchor and moves silently to take -up its position in the line, the vanguard of which is tit a shadowy substance beyond the misty headlands. On board, however, there is plenty of good cheer.During the extra days when a wait in harbour has been made necessary by unfavourable weather conditions, the trcops have become acquainted with each other and with the ships on which they are being transported.Between them and the crews a spirit of good-fellowship has been born, Previous War It is not the first trip across the ocean in wartime service for some of them. One officer wears the rib- band of the Victoria Cross.Another led the first Canadians into Mons on the last day of the World War.Others who helped storm Vimy Ridge and wallowed in the mud of Passchaendaele, rub shoulders with downy youngsters who are embarking upon their first crusade. Some of these are the sons of men who once had fought for Canada but are no longer, young.A typical example of family tradition is a certain field ambulance unit which goes to this war commanded by the son of the man who led it from 1914-18.Among the unifored men are four newspaper correspondents. They are all well-known to readers of Canadian newspapers and their fertile imaginations transferred.for the moment from tleir pens to pranks, are working overtime to add to the general gaiety, Sammy Robertson of the Canadian Press has learned overnight to master a bo’sun’s whistle and with it he Peter Pan Nursery School Private Kindergarten Special programme arranged for Children from 3 to 6 years.Particulars on Steward.” To the bow of their ship some :mpish members of an Ontario unit have fastened a figure-head.It looks like an ancient cigar store Indian. It is their mascot. They found it in the canning factory in which they had been billeted and have brought it along with them for luck.Years ago it served as a model for engravers turning out the trademark to be printed on the labels of vegetable cans.Great Ships They are great ships on which these soldiers sail.Waterfront men in glittering ports in the four corners of the world know them and remember them. They are enshrined in the memories of men and women whose names parade in the paragraphs of the Social Register. Many a romance has blossomed on their decks under the exotic light of tropical moons and of the midnight sun.So recently have some of them been imprecsed into war service that their trappings have not been covered but are strange luxury compared with the drab battle dress of the passengers who lounge in the saloons and press through the corridors. But there is laughter on biard yet, and no gayer, braver hearts ever beat between the decks of these giants of the seu than those who now watch with eagerness as the bow of each ship moves slowly into the run of the tide and slips slowly into the misty bank of clouds that shroud the near horizon.'.Like du.ks dotting the water, grimy little trawlers bob about in the swell of the passing ships. There are no saluting bursts of sound from whistles but hands wave across the widening gap of the sea and scattered cheers are muffled in the whirling flakes of snow. One of the great, grim ships of the King gces by and moves ahead.A cable length behind her follows a veteran ocean liner which saw stirring adventures in the first Great War.Not far back in the line is a lovely ship whose name, not so long ago, was front page news and back of her, almost without camouflage, comes one whose name would stir memories around the world, Silence On shore there is silence except important posts, search shall be made in their ranks before such posts are given to persons who do not normally depend upon salaries for a livelihood.Professional and business women —hard hit by war conditions and not very strongly organized—have been somewhat constantly over- Jooked by employers during the first weeks of war, and are anxious to do all they can to make their position clear.Recently a body of them approached the women Members of the House of Commons on the subject.A deputation, organized by the British Federation of Business and Professonal Women, and representing some 30,000 members of various professions, waited upon the women Members of Parliament and received a sympathetic hearing.Contrary to expectations, the women explained, the outbreak of war struck in the first instance at them rather than at men.Luxury trades, entertainments, the hotel business, the distributive, garment, textile and sports indus tries, social work connected with industrial undertakings all fell victims to the first shock of war.The professions hardest hit, they said, included those of the concert ertists, visiting teachers of the piano, and violin, masseuses and medical gymnasts, lecturers and dental surgeons.Popular opinion is not yet fully educated to the fact that business and professional women depend, in these days, for their livelihood upon their earnings. There is, moreover, a disinclination to believe that women are as likely to have dependents as are men and that these dependents are often elderly parents whose needs are wont to increase. The fact that such matters are truc, however, makes it necessary the women pointed out, to handle the present situation with the utmost promptness, The members of the Federation appealed to the women Members of Parliament in regard to these things, urging the vital necessity for taking immediate and definite steps to ease condiions.Point to Cause for Grievance They suggested that, while ad- |’ miring and appreciating the work done by volunteers during the early stages of the war, they believed that their own difficulties had been largely aggravated by the fact that paid positions had in many instances been given by employers either to inexperienced women with unearned incomes or lerop against losses from | drought, floods, hailstorms or any "other “which he has no control. The stage.I'm not prejudiced.I've made four pictures in Hollywood, and before that I was on the stage and in films in England, and 1 | think that gives me a little right | to speak what I think. My first role for Paramount was in “The Light That Failed ” which William A, Wellman produced and directed.Ronald Col- man is the star, and such grand performers as Walter Huston, : Ida Lupino, Dudley Digges and “others are in the cast.Presents New Theory It was a wonderful opportunity for a newcomer, and I did my best to take advantage of it.Since then I've finished roles in “Safari” and “The Way of All Flesh,” and I'm going into “Down Went MeGin- ty,” so I still insist I think I know what I'm talking about. This theory of mine, of course, is totally different than the usual idea.I've suggested it to a few people, and while they're amazed at first, I've managed to convince some of them. But maybe I'd better do some explaining about what I mean.I'm not trying to cast aspersions at stage stars.People like Helen Hayes and Katherine Cornell’ and such are great actresses, They would be great actresses in pictures or on the sage. But there is'a great difference in the two mediums, and I definitely believe the screen demands the most, Competition in Films "It’s like this: On the stage, the performer is totally dependent upon herself. The audience concentrates upon her.Usually—and particularly on tour—the star is the only performer of consequence in the show, There is nothing to detract from her performance. All eyes are upon her, .But in pictures, she is only onc among many. The supporting cast is filled with talented and experienced players, each anxious to do his or her best. The camera — through the director and cutter — turns away from the star, to give closeups and particular attention to the support. If the star player then can hold her audience through a complete show, she has done a magnificent job.1 think players like Bette Davis and Claudette Colbert and Carole Lombard and Madeleine Carroll, who can control an audience renc- tion under those cireumstances, can be credited with outstanding work.I think they've bettered stage performances, and I hope I do as well.Lake Superior Iron Ore Use At 1929 Boom Levels Consumption of Lake Superior iron ore is at 1929 boom levels, the Lake Superior Iron Ore Association reported. The number of furnaces in blast depending principally on ore from the Lakes area is at the highest peak since early in 1930.November ore consumption was King,” “Hark, Hark, the Lark,” “To Sylvia” and “Ave Maria.” Schubert was almost self- taught in composition and his genjus knew no bounds. At an early age he had lessons on the violin from his father and on the piano from his elder brother, Ferdinand. It is a pity he had no business head for the money he earned from his composing was spent 80 quickly that he usually lived in poverty, His father was a schoolmaster and == when Schubert “| was * seventeen, ‘| in order to avoid conscription, he became a teacher in his father’s school for three years Following that occupation he taught music for a short period and then devote.the remainder of his uneventful life to composing. He died at the early age of thirty-ore from typhoid fever on November 28th, 1828.His symphonies are so wonderful that they can compare with those of Beethoven and delightful melody seems to be the dominant feature of these masterpieces, He wrote nine symphonies, twenty- four sonatas for piano, marches, dances, impromptus, string trios, quartets, quintets, and operas. In all he composed more than eleven hundred pieces.Schubert was very short and stubby, with plain and thickset features. He wore spectacles and although his appearance was not interesting, his disposition was very good-natured and we know that he was happy-go-lucky and careless from his mode of living.Possessing a vivid imagination his compositions show a style that had a widespread influence on the romanticists.Brahms, Schumann and Liszt benefitted from his creative powers which proved an inspira.ion in their own works. So much did Schubert influence Liszt that the Hungarian genius transcribed no less than fifty-seven of his songs for piano solo, It is sad that the world should be robhed of so great a musician at the early age of thirty-one.Robinson Termed Man : With Dual Personality rudes 7 Te THEATRICAL | ATTRACTIONS | — : Tn =.“The man with the Jekyll and Hyde personality.” That is what Hollywood calls Edward G.Robinson, star of “Blackmail,” now playing at the Snowdon United Theatre until Saturday. At home Robinson is the quiet, reticent collector of art, music and literary treasures. At work, he is forceful, business-like.He is a driving worker interested only in what emotions he can produce before the camera.Of the arts allied to the drama he most prefers music. It is his opinion that music is the basis of all art.He cannot play an instru- ment himself — his wife plays the piano—but he will seat himself ‘before the piano player and pedal.his favorite music rolls for hours, He once cut up forty piano rolls and pasted them together in what he thought would be an entirely original and entertaining composition, He tried it out but his wife delivered some cautice remarks which convinced him that it was not a success, So the Robinson symphony has not been heard since, He has the latest ortho- phonic phonograph and enough symphonic records — mostly Wag- ner—to start a music shop, Children’s Theatre Will Present Fine Production The tenth major production of the Children’s Theatre, “The Youth of Queen Victoria” will be given Saturday evening at 8:15 at Vie- toria Hall.Dorothy Davis and Violet Walters are directors of the Children’s Theatre. This play, dealing with the youth of Queen Victoria, demands versatility and exactitude on the part of these young thespians, but despite that, the directors feel confident that they will even surpass the successes of their triumphant yesterdays: “The Little Princess”, “Anne of Green Gables,” “Daddy Long Legs,” “Little Women” and “Pollyanna.” Alfreda Wallace, a pupil of the school for the past four years has been entrusted with the role of Victoria from the age of fourteen until she is crowned Queen. She has Played in previou.Children's Theatre productions, but this is her first lead.Iris Shklar and Joyce Litwin, two clever little actresses will portray the role of Vie- toria in her earlier youth.Lilian DITTO Ay *WWESTMOUNT TODAY-SATURDAY SPLENDID BILL!
