Certificates! The Government could have called them #National Safety Certificates.” For that, in stark truth, is what they are.War Savings Certificates are what, in peace days, we might call a “fine investment.” They make for thrift, lay a foundation of security, appeal to the spirit of self-respect and self- reliance. On these grounds, as well as upon the grounds of democratic responsibility, of a wider devotion to the democratic creed of voluntary citizenship, they meet a need. But, far more than these things, and more Qerribly vital, War Savings Certificates are a challenge to patriotism. They are a call to all of us, and provide the means to answer the challenge of war service; a dictate of war duty which no one can ever expect to be forgiven for ignoring.War Savings Certificates are this war.the sake of all our future. In war-rocked France today the soldiers of democracy are dying for its defence.willing to back them up?To deny ourselves .things we can yield easily for their sakes? Are we willing to contribute something to feed and arm them, to sustain their strength, to tell them that back at home their peoples are supporting them? This .this above all else .is the challenge of War Savings Certificates.Over in Old England across and women and little children, workers and farmers, old and young, rich and poor, humble and obscure, are yielding their all for victory.Giving up in taxes, subscribing ing war savings certificates, they are giving a testimony of devotion to democracy and lib- They ask us whether, in this terrible conflict, with all that we are or ever hope to be at stake, we are content with "p-loyalty to our cause; This request should be filled a thousand times over and above the objective, if we allowed ourselves to be influenced by the soul stirring example set us by our fighting men. What Is the cost of one blanket compared with the sufferings of those valiant souls who surrendered their all to stem the advance o! an army of diabolical tyrants, Oh men and women of Canada, awake from your self centered smugness! that the future is none too safe for your homes and your families because of the spirit cf Cain which abouhds the theory, ‘Am I my brother’s keeper?” Give, give and give until It hurts. It will be a tonic to your souls.* * Yours in service, War Work Westmount Women’s Club.Mrs.Harold Mills, Pres., Miss Sophy L.Elliot, Rec.Secy.NEW AIR SERVICES China Is developing new air services to Russia, Hong Kong residents must now have licenses {5 import radios. This Summer Send Your Boy t For a Grand Vacation in the Laurentians Your boy will have the time of his life! of the club t> undergo training in rifle practice, shooting and other activities which are not now being carried out by women's organizations. The activities would be addition to sewing, knitting and Red Cross werk now being carried out.The letter follows a survey of the situation conducted by tha club. Its contents follow: Dear Mr.Prime Minister: We have noted with profound relief and gratitude that the Montreal Board of Trade is urging the government at Ottawa to accelerate action in war production industries and round up the Fifth Column and sabotage treachery which at the moment is menacing our country's safety. As loyal British subjects we would like at this time to express our thoughts with reference to our lack of organization from a woman's point of view.Beyond the routine work of Red Cross sewing, knitting and canteen work, etc, nothing has heen attempted in Montreal to harness the women power of this great metropolis, In England, France and elsewhere, women's auxiliaries have been formed in affiliation with men's military units (many of the auxiliaries in England especially have been started even before the Great War) which today are operating with outstanding success in relieving men of many duties which they otherwise would have to perform to the detriment of the war program, We have hundreds of healthy, athletic women in Montreal who are keen to serve the empire, and who can do nothing under present conditions to protect their country, homes and families if necessary, because of lack of regular training. In the pioneer days of New PAUSE 3 ‘BY NATIVE WLLL 24 in (ORIENTAL 4903 Sherbrooke S 7 WA.ETES once but many times, our pioneer women saved thg day through their ability to handle a rifle and shoot straight. If women are willing to offer ‘their services in this matter we’ feel that something should be done to further the cause by giving them all the aid required. We would suggest women’s units organized in squads and platoons according to military regulations, with ex-servicemen to act as Instructors. Some of our wealthy women or men might be per suaded to donate the rifles, and the problem of practice quarters could perhaps be solved by our local armoury. Our idea is not to call on the leisure class only, Let us summon all the women who wish to serve our empire which is so terribly and treacherously threatened, and whose sons are fighting so gallantly and unselfishly at this very moment to save our faith, our independence, and our homes. In conclusion, we women wish it to be clearly understood that we do not in any way intend to be an expense to the Government.Should it be necessary for us to wear uniforms then it will be each woman's duty to supply her own outfit. Our desire is to be an asset to the empire, not a liability. We offer our strength and our brains to ald our men to fight and overcome the enemy, and we bring our talents, whatever they may be, freely and willingly, proud to be given the opportunity to help rid the world of the inhuman practices of Nazi origin. Each and every woman who attaches herself to this organization must be a British subject of unquestionable loyalty to the British Empire and all it represents. No alien or British-born woman married to a foreigner 1s to be included in our ranks, of families of foreign extraction who may have been born within the British Empire.* This protection will aid in the efforts to prevent any subversive underhand treachery which might rebound to the detriment of our British Commonwealth of Nations. Our motto Is primarily voluntary service, no prize bonuses in money or other forms are to be permitted within the boundaries of our activities, which include the production of our freedom.vur faith, no matter the death of Charles Dickens, the following tribute to the famed author, submitted by Miss LI.Harvey-Jelke, 4458 Western avenue, is of particular interest: A Great Favourite As we draw near again to the anniversary of Dickens death, we cannot help but renew in our minds our admiration for that great author who could portray such realism, and whose comic and tragic characters have so influenced "us.He was a great writer, a keen observer, and a skilled reporter.Around each of his immortal characters he sets incidents of every day life.He describes their | appearance and peculiarities in such a way so as to make them stand out as living persons.Do we not know people who resemble Mr.Micawber, Montague Tigg, or Uriah Heep? They have become types to us.Tourists clamour to visit the homes of acclaimed authors, but with Dickens, the author is forgotten due to the strength of the characters he portrayed. We visit the school where Oliver Twist was’ so cruelly treated, or the old Tavern where Martin Chezzilwit so often spent the night, and when because it’s DRY.is talking about this leading lager — it's a great thirst quencher because it's LIGHT — it’s a grand appetizer FEMININE FACTS AND FANCIES by MARGARET BARDEN Miss Jessie Norris The only woman teacher ever to be elected president of the Canadian Teachers Federation, Miss Jessie Norris, teacher at Montreal West High School, has played an important part in educational circles in Montreal Prior to being elected president of the Federation, Miss Norris also served a term as vice-presi- dent.Formed more than 20 years ago, the Canadian Teachers Federation has a membership of over 33,000, and is open to all Canadian teachers.Former president of the Suburban Montreal Teachers Association, Miss Norris is now secretary treasurer of the Coteau St.Pierre Protestant Teachers’ Association, At one time, the schools of the west end of Montreal came under the jurisdiction of the Coteau St.Piere Board, but were later transferred to the Montreal! School Board, Montreal West High School 1s still operated under Coteau St.Pierre.Miss Norris took amactive part in the forming of Gatineau Val: ley, Huntingdon County and La- chute Teachers” Associations, which organizations are under the Provincial Board. She has also worked on many committees for the improvement of conditions for teachers of elementary grades. She was chairman of a special committee formed to revise the constitution of the Pro incial Association of Protestant Teachers. She was one of a committee of three chosen to present the cause of Canadian Education before the Rowell (later the Sirois) Commission at Ottawa in 1938, when a survey was conducted in regards to curricula and teachers training. She was also Instrumental in securing a meeting of Department heads, university professors and various leaders of Schools of Education for the dia- cussion of edudcationa] statistics in Canada. This meeting was condudcted under Government supervision, with gbvernment education inspectors attending the session. The members of this session ;met to consider the equal oduca- tional opportunities for all Canadians, and also of facilities available for children with special aptitudes such as music, academic and technical education.Conditions prevailing fn Canada at the time of the survey were found to be alarming in many areas.Great inequalities were very evident, for no special provisions had heen made to foster children with talents. These facts were reported to the Rowell Commission.Miss Norris has also the distinction of being one of the two Canadian directors on the World Federation of Education Associations, whose aim is to create a better feeling between nations through Schooi Teachers and to co-operate in educational] circles.Miss Norris is also the first woman to represent Canada on this Federation.Last summer when the regional conference of the World Federation of Education Associations was held in South America and aboard the S.S.Rotterdam, at which more than 850 delegates were present, these educationai leaders were shown the various methods of teaching and the we see London Bridge we wonder how many nights Bill Sykes lurked in that district. As for scenic beauty, Dickens is superb! By a few words he can paint for us pictures of Unforgettable beauty. The storm in David Copperfield is an example of his exceptional art, and of its great force. So when the ninth of June comes, let us all join in with a toast to the immortal Dickens, whose magnificent works wili never grow old! schools of every important city in South America. In many of the Spanish American cities, all schools are controlled by the government, but women hold important principal- ships.Schools in these cities are very modern, while in the interior of the country, very little al- tention is pald to education.“Pan-Americanism™ receives a great deal of attention and fis being fostered in all schools. In 1938, Miss Norris was one of the four Canadian teachers, to be entertained by the Japanese Government for almost 10 weeks. Two woinen from Vancouver, one from Toronto and one from Ottawa or Montreal, at the recommendation of the School Board, were.invited to ‘tour Japan, as guests of the Government, The trip was sponsored by the Japanese Department of Railways. One of the things Miss Norris noticed while In Japan was the fact that schools emphasized the necessity of gymnastics, In speaking of this Miss Norris sald that without a doubt the most modern gyms she has over seen are In Tokio. This has been brought about because of the high mortality in that country. The life expectancy of a Japanese man Is 44 yoars while that of 2 woman is 46.On the whole she found the people of the country very courteous and extremely clean in personal habits.Representing the teachers of Coteau St.Plorre on the Provincial Association of Protestant Teachers, Miss Norris is now serving on the Salary Committee of the Montreal women teachers, thelr qualifications and their teaching methods. It is a well known fact that salaries pald to women teachers in the Province of Quebec are disgraceful, Miss Norris said. They cannot be compared with any other province in Canada, It is also the opinion of Miss Norris that it is the lack of technical training in Montreal Schools that is largely responsible for the number of unemployed ‘‘white collar men.” These men and In many cases women too, were employed in offices, when they might have been better suited at a trade. There has always heen a scarcity of trained technicians in this city.Miss Norris, born in Granby of English and Scottish extraction, was edudcated at the Granny High School, MacDonald College and McGill University, she satart- ed teaciing in the West End shortly after her graduation. She hag always taught under the Coteau St.Plerre Board. At the present time she ig teaching grade 11, specializing in English, VISITING Mr.and Mrs.George Kirk of Westmount are visiting relatives afd friends in New York this things which had to be put up with uv- less he was prepared to spend a lot of money to replace the whole closet combination with one of the modern one plece outfits, The fact that water running in a brook or over a water fall makes a certain amount of noise oven If in such cases the sound is not unpleasant and that upon opening a tap, especially with a high water pressure, a docidedly unpleasant sound “esulted, tended to prove that running water was always noisy.Plumbers generally have work- od on this problem for years. Many pressure regulating valves have been installed to try and eliminate the noise from the W.C.Hush tubes and valve throttling have all been tried and while some improvement was obtained most of the noige still continued, Thore Is nothing more embarrassing when
