from their point of view the.situation will be worse instead of better, motorists of Montreal being especially hard hit. There is now no bridge whatever connecting Montreal with the north and south shore of the St.is free of toll, while on all others except the Victoria Bridge (owned by National) and the Harbour Bridge tolls have been virtually doubled. In effect, motorists of Montreal have to pay a fine to leave the Island. These new imposts, although produce a great revenue for the Province, will adversely affect hundreds of little businesses in the north that depend on from Montreal. As far as many motorists are concerned, the government will not collect either the toll at the bridge or the taxes on money spent at the northern are going to travel less.LICENSES, TAXES, REVENUE ~The other day a local merchant doing business on a comparatively small scale like thousands of others throughout the Province, showed us a sheaf of papers he had to peruse and fill out on licenses, federal, provincial that point, organizations, run revenue they ; indeed Lawrence that the Canadian they will not summer travel resorts, They and city sales taxes, stock information, exemptions, counter orders, and so forth that had him in a maze.He was figuring he would have to hire a comparatively expensive accountant to keep him straight with the tax- coflecting authorities. He didn’t mind collecting taxes that were going to help us win the war; make my hair shine like silk and give it that golden glisten by washing it in somebody's soap that is made out of tung oil or turtle grease or something.‘Then the broadcast changed, with no mention of the time, and I listened to a bedtime story that would give a little child nightmares. It was all about G-men and gats, gangsters, and kidnappers, and was punctuated by the rattle of machine guns and the bang of automatics. They all got killed in the end, but they didn’t say at what time.“Then I heard all about the wars in China and Spain. They dropped bombs, dragged mutilated bodies of old women and little children through the streets, and assured me that all Europe and Asia would soon be doing it, but they never mentioned the time.‘ ‘After that I heard a doctor who cares what happens to an announcer, especially one who doesn't tell the time.“Then there were a couple of comedians who told jokes that almost moved me to tears because of their of the Fourth Division, Canadian Active Service Force, has seen one of the Dominion’s proudest fighting units called upon to raise a.battalion for overseas service His Majesty's Canadian Grenadier Guards.Steeped in the traditions and customs generally associated with Household Troops, the Montreal unit is now calling for recruits of a high standard to bring the battalion up to war strength.Within the next week or so, various towns throughout the Province of Quebec will be visited by a travelling recruiting unit representing the Guards, which is to take up a position in the main part of the towns visited and offer information concerning the Regiment, army pay and allowances and send recruits to Montreal to be medically examined. This method of out-of-town recruiting was inaugurated by the old 87th Battalion, Canadian Grenadier Guards, during the last war and, judging from results obtained in the rural areas, the present battalion will experience little trouble in recruiting one company or more through this medium.Men joining the Guards from these towns are to be kept together during their elementary training and, if there are sufficient numbers, it is intended to form platoons from the various towns. In this way, recruits will be kept with their friends and soldier with their associates of civilian life, Many young men of «excellent calibre residing in these areas are anxious to serve their country in some capacity but are not in a position to travel to the citics to enlist.Under the arrangements to be made by the Guards, it will be possible for them to make all necessary enquiries before enlisting.Pending is the probability that men enlisting will be brought to Montreal via regimental vehicle, In conformity with the stern prerequisites for recruits joining the British Grenadiers, the Canadian unit is setting a high standard for aspiring soldiers with height standard set at 5'8" in stocking feet and the necessity of a sound physique and intelligence. While these measures mean that the task of raising a battalion will be a more difficult one, the result wil] be a crack fighting unit crediting the Province of Quebec, HOWARD S.ROSS, K.C.Barrister and Solicitor Telephone HA.9238 The presence of a detachment from the Canadian Grenadier Guards in the rural areas of Quebec will recall memories to thousands of inhabitants of the last war when the Guards sent out the same type of travelling units.Out of these towns came some of Canada's best fighting men and these districts can point with pride that they, as much as anyone, were responsible for the admirable war record acquired by the Guards.A TASMANIAN SCOUT HEADQUARTERS A central headquarters for Scouting in Tasmania has been opened in Hobart. On the ground floor are necessity if you specialize in this type of picture taking. On the other hand, if you just take action shots now and then, and don’t have a camera with an extremely high-speed shutter, there ‘are certain tricks you can use.and these will often help you get sharp action pictures, even though you are handicapped by a slow shutter. For example, look at the picture 1bove.The action is almost “broadside” to the camera, or at & right angle to it.Naturally, from this From this angle, motion is rapid and shutter speed must be high—but a angle, the motion is greatest, and a you shoot from a greater distance with the subject moving almost directly toward you.shutter speed of at least 1/600 second is needed. But if you stood quite near the track, farther up, so that the horse was coming almost directly toward you, the motion would appear less rapid. From that angle, a shutter speed of 1/200 would yleld a reasonably sharp picture, if you caught the horse at the peak of the jump.Remember that rule: when the action is coming toward you, motion is less, and a slower shutter will serve.By proper choice of post tion, therefore, you can overcome your handicap in many cases, and improve your percentage of successful pictures. Here is another hint.In many games and sports, there are momentary pauses.A player will halt to turn—yet still retain a good action pose for a split second. In these | pauses, If you're alert, you can capture many a fine action shot.So even if you have a slow camera, don't be discouraged.A model with fast shutter is best, but that will come fn time .and meanwhile, if you're alert and seize your opportunities, you can garner plenty of worth-while action pictures.283 John van Guilder blans have registered at the French Legation as
