C.| The following outline of the precent educational set-up in schools operated under the jurisdiction of the Westmount Protestant Board of School Commissioners was prepared this week for the Examiner by S.¥F.Kneeland, secretary-superintendent of the board: The re-organization of the Protestant School System which the Westmount Board of School Commissioners has had under study for several years, was put into effect with the re-opening of the school term, September 4th.The system adopted has been called the ‘’6-3-3” Plan, and in general consists of Grades I to VI in the £lementary School, Grades VIIl and 1X in the later-# Vii, mediate (or Junior High) School, and Grades X, XI and XII in the Senior High School. This is pretty much the local school set-up now in force. There is, however, in each of the elementary schools, a Beginners’ Class for pupils who are five years old, and who have not been to school before, in addition to the other grades of I to VI.This grade resembles the Kindergarten Class of other systems in that the five-year-olds learn to play with other children in organized games, *they are taught to sing together, to keep time to music in the rhythm band, to use crayons, to make objects with colored paper, plasticene and the lke.The teacher enlarges their vocabulary by relating storles to them, and giving them talks on various subjects of general jn- terest such as ‘‘good habits of health etc. This class differs from .the Kindergarten Class in that the children also learn during the year, when they are mentally ready for it, the elements of reading, to print words, and to do very simple number work. This is a forenoon class only, as is also Grade 1 in Westmount, Pupils who start school at the age of six.or older, or who have got behind through sickness or other causes, are encouraged to come back in the afternoon in grade, and are given individual { help in small groups of six or eight. This same rule also applies In Grade I.Pupils Total 1,450 There are three elementary schools in Westmount, Roslyn Avenue Schoo], G.H.Penrose, B.A., Principal, situated on West- this | iin this newly organized
