CALLS YOUNG PEOPLE CONFERENCE BISHOP CARLISLE The Rt.Rev.Arthur Carlisle, Bishop of Montreal, has calied a week-end Feb.7-9.Trinity Memorial Church.conference of Anglican youth to take place REV.E.S.REED in Montreal on the Chairman of the committee planning the details of the conference is a local clergyman, Rev.E.S.Reed, assistant at High Home Association Article And School What are the responsibilities of parent, teacher, and pupil in a world of iransition and revolution?Whatever our conclusion, the fundamentals of civilization still exist, Children of today as adults of tomorrow will need strength of character, morul fibre, hardihood, vision, vnd training in culturai and practical skills. Thus they can, with {aege qualifications meet the vicissitudes of life at worst, and at best take an active part in moulding futurs civilization.Do parents give the same careful planning to the most important period of a cuiid's life as they do to the purchas of an auto:uo- bile or a house?Do they consider that this entails for them definite action as to what and who shall form the character of their children and influence their lives, from the members of the Couric] to the teacher in the class room?Whatever name we give a system, 6-3-3 or 54-40 or fight, the character and ability of each person involved in that system decides its worth. It derives its tone and ideals froin the ideuls and character of the parent. The system is their instrument and produces their music. It is doing so now, either through their active or passive participation — whether they know it or not.In the most vital of all work, the utmost interest, foresight and sacrifices are needed. If we sacrifice our sons’ lives at a cost of thousands for the death of each, is it unreasonable to sacrifice a fraction of the amount to equip the next generation for life in a world bettered by both sacrifices? There is no work which requires greater idealism and ability, which exacts a greater toll from the worker than teaching, because, like all worthwhile work, it is creative. All that is petty, mean, and self-seeking should be eliminated wherever it exists. We are discovering today that nobility of thought and conduct are more common attributes in the ordinary individual than we in our cynical age had expected.A practical idealism is replacing materialism. It is our necessity if we are to avoid the petty pace of all our yesterdays that have lighted fools the way to dusty death. We have sufficient character and ability to draw upon for education. Are we seeking it out and placing it in its rightful position?Or do we expect it?Just so surely as we bar our children f-om its contact, we expose and even imbue them with the virus of smallness, selfishness and cowardice which eventually in a social economy lead to spiritual death and physical destruction.Every parent longs for his child to be brave and unselfish; longs to fit him by character and training for his place, if possible, among the great; yet some paralysing force often deadens and smothers his devotion to his child's future. What is that force? Many — by no means all — teachers have a similar devotion, and the most devoted are the most hampered There is in the case of teachers and explanation but no excuse for existing inertia.People do not quarrel with their bread and butter even though the butter is margarine.Jt every teacher were financially independent, needed action and reform would hav?been instituted long since. Then it is evident that parent and teachers have one common aim, and it is essential that we should work towards it.Close co-opera tion betwean parent and teacher will have immediate and far- reaching effects. If it is the conviction of the parent that no building is so important as the building of his child's life.he will not lack zeal; if it is the conviction of the teacher that he belongs to a - rofession second to none in respect due to it, and that he cannot belong to without adhering to certain standards for it, he will take his place as a hrave citizen and specialist in promoting reforms for the Native tribes of South Africa are donating cattle reform.True—ours is no dramatic or glamorous profession.Compared t» others in which life or death hangs on the visible motion of the performer's hand, teaching is dull. But to the imaginative, its results are as limitless as time and humanity itself.Success or failure will not be safely hidden forever by six feet of earth in fifty years, but will be working for good or ill when our present age represents antiquity.President Cowley of Hamilton College has described the educated man of the Twentieth Century as ‘’one who has acquired six specific skills and developed a number of habjts, attitudes, and appreciations which are not the equipment of the uneducated man. These are an ability to speak one's own language correctly and effectively in conversation and on one's feet before an audience, an ability to read one’s own language with reasonable speed ahd comprehension, an ability to write cl:ar and well organized exposition in one's own language, an ability to read, and, in Canada, to speak the French language with facility, an ability to think clearly from a given set of facts, an ability to work and live with others.” Unless it is implied in attitudes and appreciations, no emphasis is laid on development of character, moral fibre, idealism and vision without which the people perish.Must these people be our sous and daughters? With the addition of these latter qualities Is this a criterion by which to measure ourselves and our educational system? Is it a worthy standard of living for men and women of the future? Is our system suited to such ideals and our own needs? If it fis faulty, a system has Deen recommended recently at great cost, recognized as eminently useful, and then quietly laid to rest: the Heplyirn Report.Have we become acquainted with this report?Do we believe that it should be put into force? If we feel it should he adopted, why haven't we done something about it?In the evolution of such a system can we keep it flexible erough that changing eoaditions can be coped with readily, for change In life is now the norm?If this system is adopted in toto, its success will be a reflection of all its members from Council to teacher. It will be as good as they are.The apples at the bottom of the barrel are not usually better than those on top.Under any system there Js one most neglected skill on which parent and teacher concentrate con- tinuelly, the art of speaking one’s own language correctly and effectively in conversation and on one’s feet before an audtence, In this radlo age, nothing could he more important or more neglected. In school very child should he trained to answer on his feet in a pleasing manner, in well con structed English, unexpected qu~s- tions.J cannot understand the practice rreeping into our schools wherehy a child is actually taught to answer orally and even to give written answers solely by the word “Yes” or “No”.There can be no training in speech, writing or thinking from this method.| can see no reason for going into a frenzy about a foreign language while making no attempt to master our own.In the home the parent by concentrating on children how to cut thelr losses with a grin.Co-operation is gained in the home and at school by mutual good sportsmanship None the iess discipline must be bred int" the child by parent, teacher and class mate. Thus :t will pass gradually from the outside in to form part of the .aild's character. In this the child has a great, though often unrecognized, responsibility. His atti tude of interest and cheerful co- toperation sets the tone of his fel- dows, We have been and still are beset by coufused thinking and negative procedure.Theories are set forth fu Looks, expounded from platferms to the frustration ot pareut and teucher. These theories are beautiful to behold but terrible to veceive as the British soldier suid of the German Tank.In the actual meeting of a silua- tion or condition.they often prove a snare and n dolusion. We must keep in mind that thoso Who invent these thoories are seldom called upon to put them into practice. When the smoke has cleared away, we shall find that long, long ago Proverbs and Ecclesiastes had the final word.Teachers and parents know that at times the rosiest theorles fail thom and we lay hold on uctuuli- ty.What we find helpful, let us use; but let us not be led into incapacity of action through uncertainty and confusion.Wo must steer à sane course Lo our objective and let the theorists continue to toss flowery noseguys to us.We are froe to gather such bloowms as fit our colour scheme.“While our children were being delightfully thrilled by the happy endings of Hollywood movies and by baseball and football, the youth of Germany was at work shaping the roal world.” This quotation from Maurols’ “Tragedy in France" is one for us to ponder. Why wasn’L it our youth who shaped the world in which we are all forced to live and our own youth forced to dle?Are we fitting our present youth by definite action and wholesome discipline to become responsible citizens?Through spinelessness or feur of creating inhibitions and what-nots, are we sending them into the toughest of all worlds unable to handle and control themselves, a menace and a lability to the community?Sports and physical training are un equal necessity for all, but the elevation of a football squad to the position of conquering heroes accorded greater privileges than the Royal Air Force 1s a danger to our schools and by no means an uncommon one.Sports for the few while the majority gain a vicarlous thrill should not be the be-all and end-all of our school’s existence. We parents and teachers must keep in mind the development of character in the child, not personal or school fame, and the fame will take care of itself, In any case it should be a by-product, not a primary objective.Every child in his early years instinctively makes great use of th: word “Why?" Sometimes he keeps that habit more often loses it.Where does the responsibility lie?Aside from the child's natural aptitude, the onus must fall on those who influence his think- fug and reasoning, Have we parents and teachers too often qulck- ly shut off many an earnesl effort to arrive at truth, or passively omitted encouraging it?Loyalty is the responsibility of the child, fostered by the parent and tcuchers, Jf he Is trained to be loyal to his ideals, he will instinctively be loyal to an iustitu- tion which should represent those fdeals.1f loyalty is the child's responsibility, being worthy of it is the institution's.This doesn’t just happen without thought or sacrifice. If we consider it our noble aim to find and place and reward people of ability in time of national crises, is it not equally our duty to do as much for the children of our country?Youth is always a time of ciisis. In Rome's finest days the father by exainple, precept and constant companionship, educated his son and taught hum the responsibility of Roman citizenship, We recognize a similar necessity today, but circumstances have made the teacher the parent's assistant. This tendency is increasing and will continue to do so.Parents thus are responsible for choosing the type of people who are to have #0 extensive an influence over their children’s lives, Now as never since Rome's downfall have all standards been so assall- ed, Therefore, now we must implant the strongest principles of right-thinking, conduct, and rell- gion in its widest and most toler- It is and feeling people. We know the tie that binds all humanity cannot be broken by ono individual without affecting all.In undisturbed periods infraction of this fundamental law may pass unheeded, but its cumu- lutive effect will be ovident immediately in time of stress or crisis.1t cannot he eradicated by the sudden enactment of strict laws to halt disintegration, Then it is driven underground to breed and fester in noisomo places. But it can be counteracted and finally annulled by practical and Idoulis- tic education for all.The belief that he lives not for himself and for today but for others
