stated G.E.Trueman, executive secretary, Central Branch Y.M.C.A,, speaking before the West District Conference of the Family Welfare Association on Friday, Taking as his subject, “Reaching for New Horizons", the speaker discussed the division of war and peace time work so that there mig.t be a perpetuation of REMIFAvITTes.is outlined the way in which lessons learned during the War of 1914- 1918 had helped the Y.M.C.A.in planning activities so that leadership would still be provided for the non-uniformed youth of Canada.Trueman spoke o'! the membership privileges an” war services offered by the Y.M.C.A, for the troops, making necessary the services of one hundred and thirty- five full time workers and involving over ten milllon usages of Y.M.C.A.equipmont.The needs of young people living today amid the strain of a war-torn world were stressed.Mention was made of a survey of one hundred and forty-thiee boys, from nine to fifteen years of age, nearly hall of whom were not in any form of organized activity, and their leisure time was spent in street, yard, shack, or lane.The lack of a compulsory school attendance law made it impossible for this problem to be dealt with unless the boys involved committed some criminal misdemeanour.The speaker emphasized the need for all educational, religious, and social agencies to work together with the problems of the present in order that the democracy of tomorrow would be assured.In introducing the discussion period Miss Fredda Peden, District Assistant, pointed out that a similar need for co-operation was felt by the Family Welfare Association.Mrs.A.M.Storey, District Secretary, in giving a report on the work of the West District, referred to the difficulties of securing suitable housekeepers in familles under care of the Association where, owing to death or sickness of the mother, this service was required.Also reference was made to the hard«hps involved in the recènt red:u.tions in Needy Mothers' Allowances and in the present rigid regulations of the Bouchard Work for Rellef Plan.Mrs.Storey spoke with apprecl- ation of the valuable services of Mrs.L.Porter, casework ald; Mrs.~ B.Clarke, Parent Study Group leader; Mrs.W.H.Smith, librarian; Miss N.Collitt, visiting librarian.The meeting was held In the spacious new quarters of the Notre Dame de Grace branch of the Y.M.C.A, Following the meeting, an opportunity was given Conference members to tour the building.Reverend G.E.Trueman, rector of St.Matthew's Church, Hampstead, was in the chair.Among those present were: Rev.E.Reed, MARCH 6, 1941 WILL NOT BE FORGOTTEN When the sacrifices of British people in this war have been finally tallied, there will be more than a meagre reference to those of the t British colony of ancient island have been lost.But it is not the toll of Nazi destruction which has placed Bermudians among the first people of the Western Hemisphere to sacrifice their homes.Rather, it is a willingness on the part of these staunch t British people to give every aid to facilitate the Anglo-American joint defense plan.Of the eight colonies in this hemisphere involved in the project, Bermuda will be the most important base in the Atlantic for U.S.naval and air forces.Original plans were even far more demanding than those finally agreed upon, but even as it is many will leave homes in which their families have resided since earliest days of the colony.Many historic sites and beautiful landmarks of the colony will be de- ,molished.And alone among the colonies affected, Bermuda sees that the changes about to take place will have a decided economic effect on the life of the colony.The projected base will be no asset to the tourist trade which is the principal economic operation in Bermuda, whereas in nearly every other case obvious benefits are pained by the defense developments in Newfoundland, Jamaica, Antigua, St.hamas, Trinidad and British Guiana.But among Bermudians there were no protests when the final decision was made.Those who were dispossessed of their homes forward- help.Lucia, the Ba- ed the following resolution to the House of Assembly: IN ONE Announcement that Canadian auxiliary war services organizations have agreed to hold one united financial drive this year, instead of six separate drives, has met with the warmest of public approval.It was on the insistence of the public, in fact, and with the support of newspapers generally, that the principle of six appeals in one was accepted—not only to do away with a large percentage of campaign expenses but also to relieve us of the vexious necessity of responding to what seemed endless calls for As far as the public is concerned there is every reason to feel gratified with this arrangement, which actually was made at our own request and for our convenience.It is a great relief, indeed, to know thar by donating once we shall have carried out our obligations in that respect for the next 12 months.Having inspired the creation of this new “six in one'’ policy, it is the moral responsibility of every one of us to play our part by supporting the drive to the fullest possible extent, We must not, moreover, in all fairness, give less to this one drive than we would give in total to all six.When our co-operation is solicited, let us all bear in mind that this $5,500,000 being asked is to be used directly for the benefit of our boys on active service.It is à gift from us, “the folks back home,” and it is to be spent on entertainment, the articles are things they find no further use for, such as odd glasses, asn trays, salt and pepper shakers, beads, dress ornaments, buttons, etc.These find ready exchange among members, and in the ghort time the system has been operating It has brought in funds for two certificates, and funds are well on the way towards the third certificate.Wire coat hangers, buttons, dress weights and old metal dress brooches and trimmings are al- 80 being asked for by the club salvage; buttons, buckles, etc, are used in the rooms on articles made up for Britain, and on clothes in welfare work.This plan is beneficial in three ways: it gives money to our country, it enables members to obtain or dispose of articles conserving money which would otherwise be spent for these articles and it ensures the club of some few dollars after the seven year period.LW.L.SUBDIVISION HEARS TALK ON THE GROWTH OF SERVICE Msgr.Lawrence P.Whelan, vicar-general of the Arch-diocese of Montreal, traced the development of social service in an address to the Westmount Subdivision of the Catholic Woman's League last Friday in St.Leo's School Hall, The occasion was “Sisters of Service” day, and Monsignor Whelan spoke of the work of the residential club for girls, carried on by the Sisters at 1923 Dorchester street west.Monsignor Whelan contrasted the ruthless pagan idea of killing useless members of society with the Hebrew belief in love for one's neighbor, and still more the Christian idea that the needy should be especially cared for by the church, from which idea came the establishing of hospitals, orphanages and other institutions to care for the poor and the sick.The founder of social service, said Monsignor Whelan, was St.Vincent de Paul, who, after the war between Austria and France, built a house for poor war orphans.[ater he founded the Order of the Sisters of Charity, and with the consent of the Pope the Order carried on their charitable work outside the monasteries and convents, The speaker asked Catholic women to assist in the work of the Sisters of Service, saying that social service helps not only the body but the mind.Mrs.Leo Reynolds, the chairman of the afternoon, who introduced the vicar-general, expressed the congratulations of the subdivision on his appointment to his high office.He was thanked by Mrs.Edgar Reynolds.A cheque for $70.50 was presented to the Sisters of Service trom the Westmount Subdivision, and Sister Schenk, superintendent of the girls’ hostel, received the donation.Mrs.J.Coffey paid a tribute to the work of the Sisters, and Rev, W.E McDonagh also spoke briefly.Miss Marcella Butler entertained with a monologue and a dramatic reading, and Mrs.J.T.Rogers thanked Mies Butler, Monthly Meeting To | Be Held On Tuesday The Monthly Meeting of St.Stephen's Women's Association will eb held on Tuesday evening.March 11, in the Parish Hall, The business session will begin at 7.45 in the Guild Room, after which Superintendent H.Royal Gagnon, C Division R.C.M.P.Montreal, will address a large gathering in the Parish Hall at 8.30.Superintedent Gagnon has;
