du, but we have a lot in our favor, We have a telephone plant that is in the pink of condition. We have a vast ‘manufacturing organization. We nave an alert, experienced and loval personnel manning our switchboards and equipmeut, our construction trucks, and supply lines. We live a secsoned man- agemeui, every one of whom has demonstrated his right of leadership by rising from the ranks,” said P.A, McFarlane, vice-presid- ent of The Bell Telephone Company of Canada, speaking before tie Westmount Rotary Club yesterday in Victoria Hall.Mr.McFarlane, a resident of Westmount, outlined the requirements imposed upon the telephone ities of the Red Cross Society, YM the training and equipping of the army, navy, and air force, the establishment of government and militagy offices, barracks, airfields, and camps, the extension and construction of muaition, aircraft, shipyard, an1 military sup- Ply plants, the widespread activ- Ities of the Red Cross Society, Y.CA, Salvation Army, Knights of Columbus, and other organizations engaged in wartime service work, and the raising .f the fin- inces necessary to carry on these Sperations. In keeping with the company's policy of preparedness for emer- rency demands upon the telephone staffed with experienced employees, splendidly-equipped and with some spare faclHtles not required since the pre-depression years. Thus the upward surge of long distance traffic, which has occurred throughout the country since the outbreak of war, has been handled smoothly and efficlently. The technical and supply problems arising out of Canada’s war activity have not yet caused embarrassment, but as time goes on it is expected that priorities will be more rigidly applied to essential materials, and the telephone industry will be required to do mors and more in the field of substitution.Service problems were described by Mr.McFarlane who outlined some of the changes that have taken place in towns and villages where, in prewar days, there was little demand for telephone service.Since control of these camps.airports, and factories Is all centred in Ottawa, expansion of telephone facilities there.both local and long distance, has been extraordinary.he sald.‘These requirements,” Mr.Me- Farlane said.“involve the whole scope of the telephone art—more HMnes—more switchboards—more trained women +nd more The artery was deserted now, save for several thousand motor cars, Leta BPeathed deeply of the gasoline-scented, air, employed her imagination, and sensed a feellng of freedom surging through her blood. After an hour of strolling along in the gutter to avoid being struck by speeding motorists, she came to a crossroads and turned off the main artery, be- COMEDY AND MYSTERY Comedy and Mystery keynote in the thrilling mystery spy film “Blackout,” with Conrad Veidt and Valerie Hobson, which opens at the Monkland United Theatre on Sunday playing until Tuesday night.cause the intersecting highway seemed to be less traveled. It was.For almost thirty minutes no automobile passed her by.The road she traversed narrowed into a mere cart path, hemmed in on either side by thick woods. There was a strangeness about the air that was new to her, and she wondered what it was, Once she paused to remove a stone from her shoe, and decided that the strangeness was due’to lack of noise. She paused to listen, and became curiously oppressed by the silence. Not even the distant honking of an automobile Born broke the quietude.Leta breathed deeply of the air and tried to feel that surge of freedom again. But for some reason {t eluded her, She cast a furtive glance into the woods on her left, and jumped as a grey squirrel sprang from the limb of one tree to another. She felt suddenly lonely, without knowing why, and wondered if, Southern Field Is Named ‘Gunter’ Montgomery's former munic:- pal'airport, now the basic school of the Southeast Air Corps training centre, has been designated as “Gunter Field” in honor of the memory of the late Mayor W.A.Gunter.The name, recommended by training centre authorities, was believed in Army circles here to have broken a precedent of naming fields only for military men.Weanwhile, City Commissioner W.A.Gayle said he tavored naming the City's proposed new municipal airport for the late Clarence Dannelly Jr, 8 naval ensign and son of the Montgomery Su- perintendant of Education, who was lost in a crash at Pensacola recently.A $1,500, 000 construction pré- gram is under way at Gunter Field; nothing to break the stillness but the soft patter of rain and the distant booming of thunder, A rabbit crouched on its stomach some distance away and watched her curiously. When Leta looked up it bounded into the thicket. She screamed in mortal terror, stood up and went plunging off through the underbrush, heedless of low-hanging branches that struck at her sting- ingly.Toward four o'clock of that afternoon a bruised and torn figure, scarcely recognizable as a woman, broke through the brush that lined the main automobile highway, and signalled frantically to an approaching bus.The driver at first seemed reluctant to stop, but on getting a closer look at the signaller's face, he applied his brakes, and the woman climbed aboard.Passengers stared in frank astonishment. The man beside whom the woman sat downs moved gingerly away and presently arose and stepped across the aisle, That evening Barry Douglas returned as usual to his home about six o'clock and discovered that his dinner wasn't ready and that the living room and kitchen of his apartment were empty.Perplexed, he divested himself of coat and hat and went roaming from one room to the next in search of his wife, He found her in the bedroom, disheveled and asleep on the bed.Puzzled, he gently shook her awake. When Leta finally became aware of her surroundings, she poured out the whole story of her day.‘Hereafter, Barry, I think I shall satisfy my urge to go vagabonding by reading books about it.” And Barry with an understanding twinkle in his eye said, ‘It is the most comfortable way of learning about the world.” 07 BELMONT PARK RS Sears on SHINE SUNDAY A DOUBLE-HEADER Miss Bernice An Aerial Sensation i For P Miss Bee Kvle For Picnic Champion High Diver Phone j BY.2496 THURSDAY, JUNE 5, 194) * Theatrical Attractions * * I VIVESTMOUNT (Bherbrooke st Grey Avenue) Today until Saturday THEIR FUNNIEST HIT! holiday fields in the North American continent, lies at the buck door of Montreal. But a few short hours’ drive takes one to the heart of this land of green, rolling hills, pleasant valleys, winding rivers and tree {ringed lakes, where the soft breezes are heavy with odours of balsam and spruce and pine, and where the cool, dark forests and rippling streams abound with game and fish.Age Old Hills Acording to geologists the mysterious fascination of great age hangs over these mountains, but mighty ice caps have harrowed their sides, humbled the pride of their peaks, and have polished a chronicle of themselves on the scattered rocks which abound In this great region.- The camps of the Indians, wise with centuries of nature lore in their blood, were scattered throughout the million acres of this natural park which stretches for a thousand miles north to Hudson's Bay, Manitou EKwitchi-Saga The highest point of the range is Mount Tremblant, rising 3,400 feet above the sea, known to the Indians as "Manitou Ewitchi-Baga.’ Many of the Indian eamps have now been replaced by modern hotels, where excelient bathing, dancing, bridge, golf, tennis, riding and motoring may be thoroughly enjoyed._ Others have been taken over to provide complete facilities for those who prefer to spend their vacations hunting, and fishing in some of the 35,000 lakes, and virgin forests, of the Laurentians. For the angler, trout and bass are abundant. The glistening den.{zens of mountain streams provide plenty of thrills, and a good catch almost any day of the season can be depended upon.Avoid Mosquito Trouble At Picnics Or In Garden Many a summer outing or a pleasant week-end afternoon in the garden is spoiled by mosquitoes. While not ensuring com- piete conirol, measures may be taken to give at least some protection for short periods in limt- ed areas.A spray for this purpose is mentioned by C.R.Twinn, Division of Entomology, Dominion Department of Argriculture, in publication No.719 on “Mosquito Control in Canada”.The spray may be prepared by thoroughly emulsifying one gallon of kerosene containing the extract of one pound of pyrethrum powder (a standard pyrethrum fly spray water In which four ounces of would do) with one-half gallon of liquid soap (40 per cent) have been dissolved.Sprayed as Mist This concentrated emulsion, after being well shaken until thoroughly mixed, should be diluted with 10 parts of water and sprayed as a fine mist on lawns, shrubs, and other vegetation, by means of a pressure spray with a suitable nozzle, using about 56 gallons of spray per acre. The application should be made about half an hour before the picnic or the meeting takes place. This spray may also be substituted for petroleum oil in treating ponds and other water bodies to kill mosquito larvae and pupae, using about 50 gallons to the acre of water surface.Community Effort Best However, in mosquito control, although individuals on their own property may assist greatly by preventing mosquitoes from breeding, best results are obtained only when the work of control is organized on a community scale, either by public-spirited citizens or by municipal or other authorities, and is carried out under competent direction and with adequate funds. The publication “Mosquito Control in Canada” gives full information on the subject,
