DESCRIBED: mount Club at Weekly | : 2 IT im aR 1 1 rw 7 ç 4 Outlining the solidarity of the British Empire how mistakes were rectified and existing, P.G.Delgado.superintendent of Public Works ror Westmount, assured fellow-me- bers of the Westmount Rotary of Club Yesterda, that England would, as in the past, emerge the victor in the present conflict.Chief speaker at the club's weekly luncheon in Victoria all, Mr.Delgado titled his address, “Things to n.e Remembered,” and described tha benefits England has given the world in her struggle for indlvidual freedom, particularly since the time of Magna Charta, and the surge of greater accomplishments resulting directly from that historic signing.Quoting from Shakespeare, Masefield, Noyes, and the author of the “White Cliffs,” it was very apparent that the speaker himself was imbued with the spirit of the “Tight Little Isle.” Mr, Delgado spoke with great sincerity on the momentous happenings that have befallen the Mother country during her history, laying particular stress on those who have sought her downfall in the past and those who are striving to bring about her collapse this very hour, But, said the speaker, England is showing the World the true meaning of thé word ‘‘Greatness,” though the country be laid in ruins, and her sanctuaries of learning -and- religion left” in twisted heaps of charred ruin, the vital, dominant, spirit of her people will rise to greater heights and emerge from the confilet with head ‘‘bloody but unbowed.” Mr.Delgado concluded his remarks with a brief recitation of a famous verse. There was no mist.king the underlying significance of it; the struggle will be long and grim, with more than a possibility for darker days in store, but, he said, there is only one outcome, and that is the England shall never feel the heel of the conqueror and shall emerge once more as the master of her fate.Cricket Pitch shortage could be alleviated. Some cities are checking up more closely on cars that emit excessive smoke, indicating need of piston rings or carburetor adjustment. There will be some people who will devise ways and means to defeat the spirit of the regulations. That always happens. There will be those who will seek to chisel, just as there are always those who want to profiteer. But, most of the for its total weight grows and grows, and the longer it endures the more terrible its pressure and the greater the final catastrophe, —Judge James E.Rea.The adoption of a system which will make it as easy for one as for another to share in the abundance which is so easily produced, does not call for sacrifice on the part of the rich or those not so rich. Then no one would be at a disadvantage and all of us could afford to be at our best instead of at our worst as is the case under our present faulty system, Yet the Balkan campalgn has not been a total loss for the British.Hitler has been forced to fight a war he did not want to fight, to use up materials he did not want to use, and to devastate a region he wanted to keep producing the food, oil and miner- aly so badly needed by the nazi war machine. The destruction of communications and the disorgan- {zation of farming will cost Germany far more than the actual campaign.has cost, The psychological effect of the Balkan campaign may be hard on the people of Britain and her dominions; the actual military effect on the lars.At least, if we get ours it's the quick way and we've had the satisfaction of popping somebody.but in those rundown kipper cans they have time to watch the periscope appear, wait for the bang and next thing they know they'rs thrashing around in the blasted cold water, poor little mugs. Now {f you want to knit for someone outside of the Air Force (who would want to do a thing like that?) you have my permission to snarl your worsted around these shivering bodies but for gosh sakes lay off pampering the glamour boys that ride around in cruisers and still kid themselves that Drake saved England. What do they think would have happened if Queen Bess had got a load of the Air Force? She'd have said, general idea that most persons are naturally and inherently mean, selfish, low-lived and accursed, I tell you that humanity, in spite of centuries of error concerning the real, mechanism of money Is naturally splendid, And the very nearest thing to a miracle since the days of Christ of which I am aware, is that 30 much goodness yet endures, even abounds. We are all in mid-ocean aboard the same vessel and must sink or swim ashore together.Alike we are bearers of tribute and gatherers of tribute, but it is only the degrees thereof which vary. And it will do no permanent good to¥ merely shift the burden from one war's outcome may be much less true disastrous.—The Christian Century Chicago. How strange that with so many clever persons in the world we have not been able to agree upon a system of distribution which will allow the abundance to go to those who do their share of the useful work of the world free of all tribute. No one should fear such a system and there need not be sacrifice on che part of the so- called rich. The waste unavoidable under our present system, which would be avoided would make us all rich to say nothing of the increased production. In Great Britain for two years before the War a detailed study was made of the churches and chureh going.Subsequent studies, including an intensive census taken on a recent national day of prayer, indicate that between tive and 10 per cent .of the population could be classed as regular church goers, that about one- fourth go to church once every three months, About half the population pray privately. It is estimated that the potential Prn- testant church membership is 32,- 000,000 of whom 4,500,000 or 14 per cent are communicants or members and many more who are regular worshipers. There are 57,000 places of worship, one for every 810 people. The Roman Catholic Archbishop Grober of Freiburg in Breis- gau, in his Lenten letter for 1941, describes the present day as a “decisive time from the religious point of view, whose aims go far beyond even the church revolution in the 16th century. In Greater Germany, two spiritual worlds now confront each other, of which it must unfortunately be said that they mutually exclude each other like fire and water.Precisely the most essential things in Christianity are being openly denied in principle. There is today a regrettable estrangement between Christians and non- Christians, “Why is this? The marn reason offered is that the German nation has to blame Christianity for a faulty development, and that unconvertible Christians are a hinderance to the development of the new, eternally German way to the victorious progress of the new philosophy. The German man, unhindered and unspoilt by Christianity is stated to have won a far bigger position of power in the world, both politically and culturally, than was the case until quite recently.Confessional division, and the distortion of the German nature by Christian doctrine are held obstacles to the ex- tenson of German power.” The letter then refutes these ‘‘grave reproaches, which fall like a national curse on Christianity and the Christians.” History alone demonstrates the falsehood of the assertion that Christianity prevented the German nation from obtaining its due position of power in the world. The medieval German empire ruled Europe for centuries ,and it cannot be proved that Germany would have been more victorious without Christianity.“The Germanic period before the acceptance of Christianity proves the ~ontrary.unless the only THURSDAY, JULY 24, 194} TER IBY -LINES en By 8.B.McClean | AS Tae kilt worn by the Canadian Scottish regiments has attracted the admiring attention of American tourists. It is difficult to believe that this traditional garb of the Scots wat once forbidden in Scotland a little over two hundred years ago. That this was the case, however, is borne out by the undernoted extract from a Scottish newspaper in 1749: “A Highlander was taken up in the streets of Edinburgh, August 12, and carried prisoner tov the Castle for wearing a kilt. One Stewart, another Highlander, was taken into custody at Edinburgh, for the same crime, on September 18.” This apparently was part of the punishment meted out to those who had taken part in or sympathized with the Jacobite Rebellion in 1745.One of the most important parts of the Nazi system of conquest is to stir up racial hatred and distrust among the many minorities that comprise most modern nations.Canada and the United States are therefore perfect grovnd for such subversive activities, and the Director of Public Information has done a good job of work in countering such underground warfare by publishing the booklet ‘’Canadians All,” and by producing in conjunction with the National Film Board the motion picture “Peoples of Canada.” It is the duty of every patriotic Canadian to read this booklet and see this film, which will help him to realize that although the peoples of the Dominion comprise many races and many creeds, the freedom and liberty-loving traditions of Canada have welded them {into one strong, resolute nation, has indeed made them ‘Canadians All” Parents who complain sometimes of the amount of work their children have to get through at school nowadays saould be thankful they did not live in 1764! ln that year, a couple in Edinburgh, Scotland, advertised a select ladies’ boarding school, where, for the modest fee of $30 per quarter, the following comprehensive training could be obtained.‘All coloured work, white seam, Dresden and lace work; embroidery in gold, silver, silk, or bugles; washing of lawns, gauzes, and laces; making of shell and fili- gram work; French, Italian, aad enamelled gumflowers; Indian and French japanning, and mez- zotints on various kinds of glass; making of caps, neck-laces, and ear-rings; painting on gauze, in colours, and in imitation of Dresden work; cutting in paper, in landscape and fancy; pickling and preserving, etc.” In addition to the above, pupils were also taught “the French and Eaglish language, geography, writing, ar- ON which will make repetition impossible. Then we must start to rebuild.First responsibility will be to decentralize populations and industry.Mankind, if it must come into the city, should have its fun in puffs.Meantime there must be work, work, work.Right now we have the opportunity of a lifetime to work nut a plan to rid cities of their black spots. To hasten this day, to bring a quick end to war, scientists should be given a chance by government to produce weapons more potent even than the bombs now being dropped on helpless populations.” The United States Supreme Court recently upheld the right of Negroes to railway accommodations as good as those availabie for whites, The case grew out of a complaint by Congressman Arthur W.Mitchell of Chicago that he was put out of his Pullman quarters at he Arkansas state line and compelled to ride in a very second-class Jim Crow car.The decision was unanimous.Aerial bombs, dropped over the British Isles since the start of the ed weekly.” war, have to date damaged 2.659 churches of all denominations. There are 57,000 church buildings in the British Isles, ÿ ithmetic, book-keeping, and the method of letter-writing practis- The advertisement stated that ‘“‘thei- linens, lawns, laces, and gauzes are washed in the house, gratis, and they are brought up to make «ll their own things in the millinery way.” On the mantelpiece, facing me as 1 write, are two china figures.Thev are dogs with necks elongated to about ihree times the normal, and I had not realized what lay behind their smug countenances until ! chanced upon the phrase recently ‘‘the cruelty of inanimate objects.” Cruelty! That's just it! Every time my pen falters aud my eyes rove round for inspiration, those infernal canines meet my worrieg glance with that unvarying grin of theirs which seems to mock me.They are positively {nhumap, and therein lies of cruelty of inanimate objects, An unvarying, unwearying constency that even wear and tear or downright il.usage cannot alter brt only enhance by caricaturing the original Those china animals doubtless worried my father and my grandfather before me in exactly the same way, yet there they squat, as smug as ever, little the worse for the passage of so many years, while the old folks are gone.Everything ultimately perishes, but inanimate objects seem to persist longer, to cruelly remind u- of other scenes and peoples they have witnessed and to taunt us with their survival.Often 1 have felt inclined to wring those grotesque necks, but somehow I have never done so.Perhaps it is because I know that their grin would survive such an assault, or maybe it is because of the very memories they raise.I grin back at them sometimes, * curse them softly, then loudly, I even shake my fist before their unwinking eyes, but they only continue to smile at me mockingly. If only the damned things would talk back at me once in awhile! Coal Replaces Gas In Tokyo Chinese in Peking learn with misgiving of the successful use of North China coal in operating Tokyo's municipal buses, since the system of coal gas is to be extended to taxis also. With American gasoline out of the question, Tokyo turned to charcoal burning motor cars and buses only to be faced by a charcoal famine late last year. After tests, it has been announced that 100,000 tons of coal from Shansi Province of North China will suffice to run all motor transport in Tokyo for a single year. While the Japanese state that they can ship this Chinese coal to Japan profitably, Chinese see themselves paying the bill. Before the outbreak of Sino-Japanese hostilities nearly four years ago, good Shansi coal was available in Peking at 10 Chinese dollars per long ton.Today it is between $40 and $50 a ton and is not always easy for the Chinese to purchase it despite the fact that the mines are only a few hundred miles away on trunk railways, Westmount Baptist Church Sherbrooke St.W.& Roslyn Ave.Minister J.Alexander Johnston, D.D.1.Shirley McKyes, Choir Leader 11 AM, "GOD'S GLORY IN THE MORNING” “In the morning ye shall see the Glory of the Lord.” 7.30 P.M, "THE VOICE OF JESUS” ‘His voice was as the sound of many waters.” PRESSING WAR-TIME QUESTIONS Is Britain Wrong in Joining Hands with Russia to Defeat Hitler? Why a "’V for VICTORY" Campaign?Dr.Johnston will Preach.Visitors Cordially Welcomed : F170 WANTED TO PURCHASE period of youthful storm and .IMÔVRS RETTER G TER stress in the life of our nation.” MAHOGANY whatnot; 3 plece ant- ANTIQUES, BETTER CASH PRICES ! e 3 lque Iivingroom ast; soy spring on pald for fine see china, glass, —_— ! Royals were on the All Star squad, and inasmuch that six of the Royals were selected to play on this team, it can hardly be chalked down as a loss to the All Stars, The All Stars won their lone game against an all star team from the N.D.G.League by the score of 10-6.Alvin Bell was on the mound for the Westmount- ers and allowed but seven hits and accounted for eleven men via the strike-out route.Desse Browns and Bell hit home runs for the local team, while Rassen- ti pinch-hitting for Gribbon of N.D.G.in the ninth inning did likewise.Sid Bond the other half of the popular RCAF battery playing for the Westmount team banged out three hits in three times at bat.Bond incidentally suffered a painful cut Saturday in a ecrick- et game which required five stitches. The three losses the West- mount team suffered were at the hands of the Royals 7-2, Oxfords 9-8 and Ahuntsic 11-3.The Royals-All Stars game was a pitcher's battle between Bell and Smiley Meronek on the mound for the Royals, till the eighth in- ring, when the league leaders got to Bell for two successive doubles by Bert Dalzell and Tom Brennan, scoring two runs to give them a 4-2 advantage. The Royals added three more in the ninth inning to make sure of the affair.Meronek outpitch- ed Bell in this game, allowing the All Stars but five hits, shutting them out every inning but the fifth, he struck out
