— Plans for Local Drive Being Prepared — Housewives Urged Not to Part \\With Articles in Present Use ’ Canada’s war effort will be benefitted in two ways, when the National War Sefvices Department launches its Dominion-wide drive for aluminum salvage, for not only will every pound of aluminum thus collected be utilized directly in war industry, but the net sale price of the aluminum will go to the Red Cross Society.Organization for the big coast-to-coast drive for aluminum scrap was completed last week, when representatives of the Canadian Aluminum Refineries and the Canadian Association of Secondary Materials met representatives of the Metals Controller's Office and the National Salvage Campaign S assurance of complete co-opera-% tion. The president of the Association said, ‘We are ready to handle all the metal collected in the drive. We will do it on a strictly non-profit basis, and prepare it in accordance with the refiners’ specifications.” Only Scrap Wanted Referring to the special aluminum drive, to be held in the Province of Quebec on Sept.5 and 6, the National Salvage Campaign Two little boys, Roger Cote, 11, and Garth Gilhooly, 12, made up their minds to help the Red Cross and went to work with a will, collecting approxima‘ely 600 pounds cf scrap metal, newspapers, bol- tles, etc., in two or three daya.‘ Now's the tîme for all the children in the neighborhood to follow in the footsteps of Roger-and Garth, and prove as: successful at collecting salvage as they hdve been in holding sales to aid the Red Cross andj Queen's Canadian Fund this summer.supervisor stressed that ‘‘only scrap aluminum should be donated, Disused pots and pans, broken electrical equipment, parts of washers, sweepers, or automobiles, discarded gadgets or sport equipment — all are welcome contributions. We are not asking for any aluminum articles now in use, the donation of which would; mean replacement by something else. This would not be economy. We are promoting a salvage drive which means we want all articles of aluminum which are of no further use other than for the metal which can be reprocessed.” The dealers designated to handle the scrap aluminum will receive only out-of-pocket expenses for preparing the scrap. This involves cleaning, removing handles and rivets and other foreign material, sorting and pressing into bales or briquettes. When the material is ready, the executive secretary of the association will report to the Metals Controller the quantities available and the Metals Controller will designate the quantities to be shipped to the various authorized refining plants. The refineries will turn over to the Red Cross the prevailing price of scrap ala- minum, less the amount paid to the dealers for handling and preparing, less freight. The metal will be shipped freight collect and the refining plants will pay the {reight.Local plans for the national slumium drive are being prepared, and will be announced later.Truck Will Call Those groups or individuals who have collected an amount of 100 pounds or more of aluminum and other salvage may have a truck call as often as three times 8 week, it has been announced ny those in charge of the National Salvage drive in this city.Old Papers, magazines, bottles, waste metal, rags, etc., are needed, and salvage may be taken to the headquarters of the local committee wn 101 Murray street.A truck will be sent if collectors of salvage telephone BE.2545.upervisor in Ottawa gave their LAL.RITZ HAS HIGH ADVENTURE IN MIDDLE EAST Canadian Airman Has Triple Adventure During Campaign — Again Ready for Duty A saga of bigh adventure in which LAC Ralph Ritz of Notre Dame de Grace was the outstanding figure during the period of his campaign in the Middle East, has been receieved here recently.Word received at the home of LAC RALPH RITZ Mrs.Ritz, 4833 Dornal avenue, revealed Ralph to be convalescing in a military hospital, the after effects of being shot down in aerial combat, captured by hostile Arabs, thrown into a tent and finally shot in the back, That is the realistic adventure of a young Canadian airman, and to round out his story with the facts of being removed to an enemy hospital where he was decently cured for, and then recaps tured by British Forces duriug the battle of Iraq, makes this one of the truly odd stories of the war.Ralph, in,a letter to his mother states, ‘‘this little experience of mine doesn't sound very exciting in this letter, but,” — and
