THE WESTMOUNT EXAMINER NEWS OF THE THEATRE WORLD Incidentally.by Jack Hirshberg LETTER HOME Hollywood, November 6th—Angelinos, as residents of this town are quaintly known, are hoping that Jupe Pluvius will improve his manners in the near future, for more ways than one.we are all very wet—possibly in What the Weather Man modestly describes as ‘‘occasional showers” have already inundated four main highways.Three additional arteries from the nearby Sierras are buried in snow and ice, and an angry ocean is pounding Hades out of defenceless homes on the Sauta Monica beach front.Topping it all, and adding the coup de grace to California's famed ideal climate, two sharp earthquakes shook the city into near hysteria this week, tumbling dishes from shelves and awakening slumbering husbands whose wives had dragged them to the neighbourhood theatre for bank night, In fact,, angelinos are inclined to believe the Fates have teamed up against them, and Florida is probably laughing up its collective sleeve. For old Jupe Pluvious couldn't have chosen a less fortunate moment to pour, and Mother Earth couldn't have picked a worse time to erupt. It so happens that representatives of 500-odd Chambers of Commerce across the country are convening here this week, lured west by -tales of sun- warmed days and moonlit nights — and théir reports to the folk backs home are not likely to ald the cause of the Southland! It happens every time! Deanna pur is still chief topic of conversation in these here parts; and, though she re- niains at odds with her studio, Universal chose to screen her latest effort this week.Press previews, in the strict sense of the term, are supposedly prohibited by a.new Hays Office ruling, so this screening was officially an.“Export Showing", and Mr.Hays’ gtndarmes could do little about §b.It's a safe prediction, however, that gendarmes across the continent will HAVE to do something about it; for, once the good word gets around, there's bound to be a queue blocks long leading to every theatre showing “It Started With Eve”.Producer Joe Pasternack's swan song for Universal, ‘It Started With Eve” is probably Deanna's best to date — and one of the funniest, yet most deeply human, celjuloid documents of the year, It's the tale of a hatcheck girl who becomes involved with the son of an aged millionaire.Supposedly on his deathbed, the venerable moneybags refuses t6 pass on — and complications ensue, Robert- Cummings is the heir A ui I SAY!
